Bio

During my freshman year of high school, the Corona virus became a pandemic. Due to the hostile nature of the Corona virus, schools became completely virtual. I completed my freshman year online, along with a driver's permit. The mental strain of online classes and family struggles during this time influenced me to drop out of high school. Once the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, I returned to school and completed my Adult High School diploma. I have successfully transitioned to a community college student. During my academic journey, I have worked full time. I entered the workforce as a cashier and grill cook. Meanwhile, I shadowed at dental offices. Shadowing at dental offices led to my current job as a dental assistant. Overall my academic and career journey has taught me self-discipline, perseverance and optimism.

Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
The path to success is often riddled with unexpected challenges and detours, and my journey is no exception. Growing up in a lower income, immigrant family, educational opportunities were scarce. I faced a multitude of obstacles that led me to make the difficult decision to drop out of high school. However, my story is not defined by that choice but rather by the resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment to education that fueled my triumphant return to school and paved the way for me to become the first student in my family to attend college. Life circumstances and family responsibilities placed immense pressure on me during my high school years. In the midst of COVID-19, the weight of financial struggles and the need to contribute to my family's income became overwhelming, forcing me to make the heart-wrenching decision to drop out of high school. At the time, it felt like I was relinquishing my dreams for the sake of immediate survival. The year that followed was marked by a minimum wage job, financial instability, and the haunting feeling that I was relinquishing my potential. The absence of a high school diploma presented barriers to numerous opportunities, and the social stigma attached to dropping out only intensified the challenges I faced. It was during this period of adversity that I began to truly understand the value of education and its power to break the cycle of generational limitations. Realizing my aspirations were slipping away, I made the decision to return to school. Re-enrolling to an Adult High School program, I dedicated myself to overcoming the academic gaps that had developed during my hiatus. The journey was not without its share of doubts and setbacks, but the determination to rise above my circumstances fueled my every step. Along with determination, my parents journey to America to provide opportunities for me motivated me every day. With sheer perseverance and a newfound appreciation for the transformative power of education, I successfully earned my Adult High School diploma and subsequently enrolled into a local community college. The experience of being back in a learning environment was both humbling and empowering, as it reignited my passion for knowledge and opened doors to a realm of possibilities previously thought unattainable. The culmination of my efforts came when I received acceptance letters from several colleges. The significance of this achievement went beyond personal success; it marked a historic moment for my family. I, the first in my family, was breaking the mold, challenging the status quo, and charting a new course toward a brighter future. The pride and joy in my family's eyes were tangible as they witnessed the realization of a dream that transcended generations. I, Alicia Montejo, now plan to pursue a degree in psychology. Throughout my experience with adversity I have developed not only an appreciation for education, but also for mental health. Witnessing my family's struggles has inspired and pushed me to help other marginalized communities obtain opportunities despite their circumstances. My story serves as a reminder that setbacks do not define us; it is our response to them that shapes our future.
    Redefining Victory Scholarship
My name is Alicia Montejo. I am excited to share my story and aspirations with you. Growing up in rural North Carolina, I developed a deep appreciation for mental health early in my life. Now, as I stand at the threshold of higher education, I am eager to take the next step in my journey and make a lasting impact on the world around me. From an early age, I found myself captivated by the impact that mental health has on every aspect of life. I grew up witnessing the impact of mental illness on myself, my family and my community. Through witnessing the challenges of mental illness, I knew I wanted to improve my community's quality of life. This passion led me to pursue a bachelors degree in psychology. Throughout my academic journey, I have not only excelled in my coursework despite challenges, but also actively sought opportunities to apply my knowledge in real-life scenarios. Whether through research projects, community engagement, or shadowing at mental health clinics, I have consistently sought to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The Redefining Victory scholarship holds immense significance for me as it represents more than just financial support. If awarded this scholarship, I intend to utilize the funds judiciously to cover tuition, further research in the field of psychology, and assist my local community. This support will not only ease the financial burden on my family but will also provide me with the freedom to fully immerse myself in my studies and extracurricular activities, enabling me to make the most of my educational experience. Looking to the future, my ideal career envisions me as a licensed clinical therapist. I am drawn to the prospect of increasing mental health awareness among marginalized youth. Whether it's innovating new solutions to address rising mental illness rates among youth or contributing to groundbreaking research in psychology, I am committed to making a tangible and positive difference. Beyond personal fulfillment, my ultimate goal is to contribute to positive change on a global scale. I aspire to make mental health education accessible to all communities in America. By combining my passion for psychology with a commitment to social responsibility, I aim to be a catalyst for transformative change. Whether through sustainable initiatives, community outreach programs, or advancements in technology, my vision is to leave an indelible mark that resonates far beyond the confines of my professional endeavors. To me, success is achieved when communities around the world have been positively impacted. By raising mental health awareness and providing opportunities to underrepresented communities, I will be achieving my life long dream. In conclusion, the Redefining Victory scholarship represents not just a financial boost but a pivotal stepping stone in my journey towards realizing my dreams and effecting meaningful change. I am grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this scholarship.
