A skateboard doesn’t move unless you push, and it doesn't navigate cracks in the sidewalk unless you have the grit to stay balanced. For a long time, pursuing a higher education felt like trying to skate uphill against an impossible incline. Coming from an underrepresented background where the financial realities of college loom large, the dream of higher education can easily feel out of reach. But I have never been someone to let momentum stop. Instead, I choose to build my own.
My ambition is rooted at the intersection of the physical and the digital. I have always possessed a deep, full-stack curiosity to bridge the gap between physical hardware and intelligent code. My goal is to master computer science and electrical engineering, developing a skill set that allows me to build the intelligent software systems and robust hardware infrastructure of tomorrow. I don’t just want to write applications; I want to engineer solutions to real-world challenges, whether that means creating tools that enhance community connectivity or building software that drives environmental sustainability.
Drive, to me, is an everyday commitment. I live by a simple philosophy: focus on getting just one percent better every single day. True progress isn't about massive, overnight shifts; it is about the quiet, consistent discipline of showing up, learning from failures, and pushing forward. When I skate through the streets of Los Angeles, I look at the world around me through a full stack lens. To most people, a smartphone or a smart grid is just a black box of convenience, but to me, it is a canvas of physical circuitry waiting to be mastered by intelligent code. My drive to pursue a career at the intersection of computer science and electrical engineering stems from this exact curiosity. I don't just want to consume technology; I want to author it. Growing up, I quickly realized that technology isn’t just about innovation, it is about power and perspective. If our community isn’t at the table designing the hardware and software of the future, the future won’t be designed with us in mind. I am pursuing STEM to claim our seat at that table.
The stark reality that Black students earn just 5% of engineering degrees is not just a statistic to me. It represents a massive gap in who gets to build the modern world. This lack of representation directly limits the perspective, creativity, and entrepreneurial drive entering the tech workforce. I am pursuing STEM to change that narrative from the inside out, proving that excellence in complex engineering is a natural space for Black students.
My personal moral philosophy has always centered on a commitment to incremental growth and deep community responsibility, aiming to improve by one percent every day. This daily commitment perfectly mirrors the scholarship's motto, Lift As We Climb. For me, climbing the ladder of technical expertise is completely meaningless if I am scaling it alone. True leadership requires reaching back to pull others up alongside you.
I have already put this motto into action by founding a youth initiative dedicated to leadership training and character development for teenagers, alongside leading a high school STEM club to expose peers to technical careers. I know firsthand that genius is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not.
With my degree, I have a clear plan to uplift my community through two distinct pathways: digital empowerment and environmental justice.
First, I will expand my leadership initiative into a full scale tech accelerator for underrepresented youth. Using my background in engineering, I will design hands on programs where teenagers don't just learn to use apps, but actually build physical devices and program artificial intelligence software. I plan to develop smart, localized engineering solutions, such as deploying accessible, AI driven environmental monitoring systems, to advocate for cleaner, safer neighborhoods.

June 2025, my family faced a devastating tragedy when we lost my beloved aunt, Olayinka Lindo, a vibrant forty-four-year-old mother of five from Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Aunt Ola had been bravely battling acute myeloid leukemia since March, fighting with every ounce of her being. The chemotherapy was working, and we were preparing for her return home. However, an unexpected shoulder fracture kept her in the hospital, where underlying complications triggered the rapid, catastrophic onset of sepsis. In a matter of moments, she began vomiting blood and her heart stopped. Despite medical professionals spending forty-five minutes trying to resuscitate her, she was gone. Sepsis took her from us in a cruel flash, leaving our family fractured and carrying a profound weight of sorrow.
Beyond the deep personal void she left behind, Aunt Ola was a massive inspiration for my future. As a successful construction manager and engineer, she was a trailblazer who showed me the power of bridging physical design with real-world execution. Because of this profound loss, my upcoming educational journey has taken on a deeply personal purpose. I will begin studying abroad in London alongside University of New Haven Verto ed, a choice driven entirely by my desire to be physically near while pursuing my rigorous engineering credentials, my primary mission outside the classroom will be to provide vital mental and emotional support to my cousins as they navigate life without their mother. At seventeen, waking up here as a summer fellow feels surreal, a far cry from the uncomfortable living room love seat I called a bed for over a decade. That couch taught me stoicism, forcing me to aim for something better. I made it to New York by the grit of my teeth, failing forward with a tireless growth mindset.
From ninth to eleventh grade, I was trapped in a toxic school environment while my world collapsed at home. I faced the devastating loss of my closest father figure, while witnessing my mother navigate a rare diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica and granulosa cell tumor cancer. As the child of a permanently disabled parent, our finances were stretched beyond limits following her three month hospitalization.
High school became extraordinarily dark. When I proposed an independent passion project, my biology teacher flatly told me she did not care. My history teacher called me "the boy who cried wolf," and an office attendant accused me of subversion simply because my seat on the LAUSD Gifted Student Advisory Council required lunch meetings. I was even denied entry to the leadership class for refusing to abandon my ambitions.
Instead of breaking, I used their rejection as fuel, joining the district level GSAC council anyway. During my sophomore year of high school, institutional hostility and indifference fractured my mental health, spiraling into severe clinical depression and suicidal ideation. Navigating these dark corridors between the ages of 14 and 16 forced a profound confrontation with vulnerability. Yet, surviving did not just teach me to endure; it fundamentally re-engineered my ambitions, transformed how I cultivate relationships, and completely altered my understanding of the world.
My struggles began in an environment that suppressed student initiative. While thriving on ambition and earning a seat on the LAUSD Gifted Student Advisory Council (GSAC), the educators who should have been mentors became the primary architects of my distress. The resistance was explicit: my biology teacher bluntly rejected my passion project, my history teacher dismissed my struggles as those of "the boy who cried wolf," and an office aide accused me of operating behind the coordinator's back on district initiatives.
This hostility trickled down to the student body; peers mimicked the adults' contempt, turning me into a social target. Compounding this, my mother, a single parent and my primary anchor, was fighting cancer. Undergoing intensive treatments, she could not attend school events or advocate for me. A toxic culture of favoritism emerged, rewarding students with visible, present parents while marginalizing those navigating quiet crises at home. For five grueling semesters, I existed in utter misery, fighting a quiet war against a system that refused to see my value.
The turning point required admitting I could not fix a broken environment, prompting me to transfer schools. The true breakthrough came through professional counseling with TimelyCare. These sessions provided an objective perspective that helped me decouple my self-worth from my previous school's toxic feedback loop, teaching me emotional triage and learning what to internalize and what to discard.
Armed with resilience, I transitioned to Palisades Charter High School as a survivor ready to reclaim his narrative. The faculty, staff, and peers embraced me with radical empathy. In this nurturing ecosystem, my chronic stress and depression melted away, freeing my mind to innovate, learn, and lead.
Though I had to forfeit my GSAC seat due to jurisdictional boundaries, I later reached out to the lead teacher, Susana Furfari, to share my achievements. I know what it feels like to be invisible, to watch a parent fight a life-threatening illness while fighting silent battles against institutional neglect.
