John Woolley Memorial Scholarship
My name is Alex Pham, and I am a Vietnamese-American student from New Iberia Senior High School who will be attending Louisiana State University to major in Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering. I have earned a 3.7 GPA and a 27 ACT score while balancing school and work, an experience that has shaped my character in meaningful ways. What makes me unique is not just my academic performance, but the combination of my cultural background, work ethic, and willingness to step into a challenging field without prior experience and fully commit to learning.
Growing up in a Vietnamese-American household has deeply influenced who I am. My family’s story is rooted in sacrifice and resilience. My parents immigrated in pursuit of better opportunities, and their journey has instilled in me a strong sense of gratitude and responsibility. Education has always been emphasized in my home as the key to stability and progress. At the same time, I have learned humility, respect, and perseverance through cultural values that prioritize hard work and continuous self-improvement. These lessons have guided me throughout high school as I balanced academic responsibilities with employment, often managing long days that required discipline and careful time management.
Another aspect that makes me unique is my decision to pursue Computer Science even though I do not yet have coding experience. Rather than feeling intimidated by this, I see it as motivation. I am eager to learn, grow, and challenge myself in a field that constantly evolves. I believe that being new to coding gives me a fresh perspective and a strong drive to prove to myself that I can succeed through dedication and effort. My willingness to step outside of my comfort zone reflects my belief that growth happens when you embrace challenges instead of avoiding them.
In addition, working while in high school has given me real-world skills that extend beyond academics. I have learned responsibility, professionalism, and how to collaborate with others in fast-paced environments. These experiences have strengthened my communication skills and taught me the value of accountability. They have also given me a deeper understanding of financial responsibility, which is one of the reasons this scholarship would have such a meaningful impact on my life.
If awarded this scholarship, I would use the funds to help cover tuition, books, and educational expenses at LSU. Reducing the financial burden on my family would allow me to dedicate more time and focus to my studies, campus involvement, and pursuing internships related to software engineering. Instead of worrying about balancing excessive work hours with academic demands, I would be able to invest more fully in developing my technical skills and preparing for a successful career. This scholarship would not only support my education but also serve as an investment in my long-term goal of becoming a skilled software engineer who creates innovative solutions and builds a stable future for my family.
Vietnamese Freedom and Heritage Scholarship
My Vietnamese heritage has played a central role in shaping both my educational journey and my personal values. As a Vietnamese-American student, I grew up in a household where education was viewed not simply as an option, but as a responsibility and privilege. My family’s history of immigration is rooted in sacrifice, resilience, and the hope for greater opportunity. Knowing that my parents and relatives left behind familiarity and comfort to build a better life in the United States has deeply influenced how I approach my own goals. Their journey reminds me that the opportunities I have today exist because of their courage and determination.
From a young age, I was taught that hard work is the foundation of success. In Vietnamese culture, perseverance and respect for education are strongly emphasized. My parents consistently encouraged me to stay focused on school, maintain discipline, and strive for improvement. Even when balancing academics with work during high school, I carried that mindset with me. Maintaining a 3.7 GPA and earning a 27 ACT score required consistency, time management, and sacrifice, but I viewed those challenges as part of honoring my family’s efforts. Their immigration story instilled in me a sense of responsibility to make the most of the opportunities they worked so hard to provide.
At the same time, growing up in a Vietnamese-American household sometimes meant navigating cultural differences. There can be pressure to meet high expectations and pursue stable, respected careers. Rather than seeing this as a burden, I see it as motivation. It has pushed me to aim higher and to think carefully about my future. Choosing to major in Computer Science reflects both my personal interests and my desire to build a secure and impactful career. Technology offers the opportunity to create solutions that improve everyday life, and it represents a field where hard work and skill development can lead to meaningful contributions.
These cultural and familial experiences have shaped my vision for the future in two important ways. First, they have given me a deep appreciation for opportunity. I understand that access to education is not something to take for granted. Because of this, I am committed to using my degree not only to achieve personal success but also to give back. Whether through mentoring younger students, supporting immigrant communities, or contributing to technology that increases access to education and resources, I want my work to create positive change.
Second, my upbringing has strengthened my resilience. Being part of an immigrant family often means learning to adapt, communicate across cultures, and persevere through uncertainty. These skills are essential not only in life but also in a field like software engineering, where problem-solving and continuous learning are key. I have learned to approach obstacles with patience and determination rather than frustration.
Ultimately, my Vietnamese heritage is not just part of my identity—it is the foundation of my ambition. My family’s history of immigration has taught me that progress is built through sacrifice, education, and persistence. As I pursue my degree and future career, I carry their story with me as motivation to succeed, uplift my community, and contribute meaningfully to the world around me.

Christian Fitness Association General Scholarship
My name is Alex Pham, a Vietnamese-American student at New Iberia Senior High School, and I am proud to say I have a 3.7 GPA along with a 27 ACT score. These numbers reflect more than just academic ability, they represent years of discipline, growth, and commitment to improving myself. Throughout high school, I have challenged myself to perform well academically while balancing responsibilities outside of the classroom. My journey has not simply been about earning grades, but about building qualities necessary for my long-term success.
One of my greatest accomplishments has been maintaining strong academic performance while balancing work and school. Managing both responsibilities has required careful time management and sacrifice. There were days when I transitioned directly from school to work, completing assignments late at night and preparing for exams in between shifts. While this schedule was harsh, it strengthened my ability to stay organized, focused, and motivated even when I felt overwhelmed. Rather than allowing challenges to lower my performance, I used them as motivation to push myself further. Balancing these responsibilities has shaped me into someone who understands accountability and persistence, qualities I will carry with me throughout college and my career.
Being raised in a Vietnamese-American household has also influenced my values and work ethic. My family has always emphasized the importance of education as a path to opportunity. Watching my parents work hard to provide for our family has inspired me to pursue higher education not only for personal growth, but to create long-term security for those around me. Instead of worrying about how to cover expenses, I would be able to dedicate more time to academic excellence, skill development, and seeking internship opportunities that align with my career goals.
I believe I should be considered for this scholarship because I have demonstrated academic consistency, personal responsibility, and a strong commitment to growth. My GPA and ACT score reflect dedication to learning, while my work experience reflects maturity and discipline. More importantly, I possess the drive to continue improving.
