I remember the first time I stepped onto a lacrosse field in seventh grade. I had never played before, and most of the other kids had been playing for years. My hands shook as I held the stick, and I felt out of place. But I also felt something I had never felt before: a spark of determination. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this. I wanted to push myself, even when it was hard. That moment was the start of a journey that would teach me about discipline, perseverance, and the power of education. Growing up, education was something I saw my family get through, but never really use to open doors. Everyone in my immediate family graduated high school with low GPAs, and no one had ever gone to college. For a long time, I didn’t think much about my grades. School was just something I had to get through, not something that could shape my future. That changed when I met a mentor through my lacrosse team. He showed me that the work I put into the classroom could create opportunities just like the work I put into sports. It was the first time I realized that my future didn’t have to follow the same path as the generations before me. Once I decided to focus on academics, I worked harder than ever. My GPA went from a 3.3 to a 3.9 and eventually to a 4.3. I learned that education is not just about grades, but about discipline, critical thinking, and understanding the world. Each time I overcame a challenge in school, it reminded me that I could achieve more than I had imagined. That determination also carried over to sports. I became the only four-year varsity starter on my lacrosse team and joined football in tenth grade. By my junior and senior years, I was a varsity starter and a key player on offense, defense, and special teams. My senior season, I hardly left the field except for halftime and earned recognition as an all-conference linebacker. Balancing school and sports was exhausting at times, but it taught me that hard work and persistence pay off. Being the first in my family to go to college is both exciting and intimidating. I have had to figure out everything on my own, from college applications to financial aid. There were times I doubted myself and wondered if I could really do it. But every challenge I overcame made me more determined to succeed. I realized that I am not only building a future for myself, but also setting an example for my younger cousins and others in my community. I want them to see that it is possible to break cycles and reach goals that may have seemed out of reach. I chose nursing because it is a career that combines purpose with action. I want to help people when they are at their most vulnerable. I want to be someone who makes a real difference in the lives of others, whether it is providing comfort, education, or care. I know that being a nurse will be challenging, but I am ready to meet those challenges head on because education has shown me that hard work and discipline can turn dreams into reality. I hope to work in communities where healthcare is limited or where people struggle to access proper care. I want to use what I learn to educate patients, advocate for them, and support them through difficult times. There is a sense of pride and responsibility in being the first in my family to attend college. It reminds me that the choices I make now can shape my future and the future of those around me. I want to be a reminder that circumstances do not define your potential. Every late night studying, every early morning on the field, and every moment I chose to push myself has brought me closer to my goals. Education has given me direction and purpose. It has taught me that challenges are not obstacles, but opportunities to grow. I will continue this journey by playing college lacrosse while majoring in nursing, which is a path that combines everything I have learned from discipline, service, and pushing myself past limits. I am determined to work hard, learn as much as I can, and use my education to create a better future for myself and for others. I want to show that no matter where you start, you can rise above and make a difference. Education has given me a sense of direction, a sense of purpose, and the tools to turn my dreams into reality.
