Purple Dream Scholarship
My journey as a single mother has been filled with challenges, but it has also been filled with lessons, growth, and strength I did not always know I had. Balancing motherhood, responsibilities, and my own dreams has not been easy. Still, through it all, I have remained committed to building a better future for myself and my family. Returning to school was not just a choice, it was a promise I made to myself—to keep going no matter what life placed in front of me.
There were many nights when I felt torn between roles, wanting to be present as a mother and still pushing forward to complete my studies. At times I wondered if I had taken on too much. Financial stress, emotional struggles, and the constant pressure to keep everything together weighed heavily on me. But each obstacle reminded me of the kind of strength I carry within. I learned that perseverance is not about being perfect or never falling down. It is about getting back up every single time and choosing to move forward.
This journey back into higher education has shaped my values in so many ways. It has taught me patience, faith, and resilience. It has shown me how important it is to be an example, to show that even when life becomes difficult, you can still rise. Returning to school has also given me clarity. I no longer see education as just a requirement or a piece of paper. I see it as transformation. Every class I take, every assignment I complete, moves me closer to the life I envision for myself and for those I love.
My goals are rooted in service and in using my experiences to help others. I am studying Political Science with plans to attend law school. My passion is to advocate for those who feel overlooked or silenced. I know what it feels like to face barriers, and I want to use my voice and my training to break down some of those walls. The law, for me, is more than rules and policies. It represents fairness, protection, and opportunity. By continuing my education, I will be able to step into that space and make a difference for families and communities who need it most.
Receiving this scholarship would mean more than words can express. It would ease the financial stress that often makes this path harder than it should be. It would give me the space to focus more on excelling in school and preparing for law school, instead of being consumed with worry about how to make ends meet. Most importantly, it would be a reminder that my journey is seen, that people believe in the value of adult learners returning to education, and that I am not walking this path alone.
My story is one of faith, resilience, and the refusal to give up. Education is my second chance, and I am committed to making the most of it. With the support of this scholarship, I can continue moving forward, not only creating a better future for myself and my family, but also building a career dedicated to service, advocacy, and hope.
Harvey and Geneva Mabry Second Time Around Scholarship
When I reflect on my journey, I see a story of perseverance, resilience, and an unshakable belief that it is never too late to pursue your dreams. My name is Alexis House, and I am a woman, a mother, an entrepreneur, and now, after many years of life experience, an undergraduate student returning to school to prepare for law school. I have faced challenges that could have made me give up, but instead, they became my reasons to press forward.
I was raised by a strong, determined woman who instilled in me the value of hard work, self worth, and education. After her passing in 2016, I struggled to find my footing. Life felt uncertain, and I carried the weight of grief alongside the responsibilities of raising a family and running my businesses. Yet even in those difficult years, I knew I wanted to create a future built on purpose and service, not only for myself but for those who look up to me.
For over a decade, I built and managed businesses that taught me discipline, leadership, and how to push through obstacles when everything seemed stacked against me. But deep down, I knew my journey was not finished. My passion for justice, advocacy, and uplifting others was calling me toward something greater. That is why, after years away from the classroom, I made the bold decision to return to school to pursue Political Science with a Pre Law concentration at Louisiana State University.
Being over thirty and stepping back into college has not been easy. Balancing coursework with motherhood, financial hardship, and entrepreneurship has tested me in every way. But those very challenges have given me the grit to succeed. I see education not just as a goal but as a form of perseverance, a way of rewriting my story, proving that determination can overcome any barrier.
Law school is my next destination. I want to use my voice and my training to advocate for others who feel unseen, particularly women, families, and underrepresented communities. My life has been shaped by the struggles and resilience of those who came before me, and I carry that legacy forward. Returning to school has reawakened my sense of purpose, and every class I complete reminds me that I am not just doing this for myself. I am doing this for my family, for my community, and for every person who needs an advocate on their side.
This scholarship resonates deeply with me because its story mirrors my own belief that no challenge is too great when faith, perseverance, and education come together. I am determined to keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles. This scholarship would not only lighten the financial burden I face but also honor the very values I strive to embody: ambition, resilience, and the courage to pursue dreams at any stage of life.
I am honored to apply, and I thank you for considering me as someone who will carry on this legacy of determination.
