Bio

I believe that education is the key to changing not only my future but my family’s future. As a single mother of two amazing boys, I balance work, school, and parenting every day while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Walden University with a 4.0 GPA. My long-term goal is to build a career in Human Resources where I can help employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. I also plan to continue my education by earning a Ph.D. in Business Administration and eventually open my own HR consulting business. I am passionate about creating opportunities for others, especially those who have faced obstacles or have been overlooked. Working in leadership roles has strengthened my communication, problem-solving, and ability to remain calm under pressure. Every challenge I’ve faced has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of never giving up. I believe I am a strong scholarship candidate because I don’t let difficult circumstances define my future. I work hard, maintain academic excellence, and continue investing in my education while raising my children and building a meaningful career. Receiving scholarship support would allow me to focus more on learning, reduce financial stress, and continue working toward becoming the first person in my family to earn advanced degrees while creating a legacy my sons can be proud of.

Neetu Watumull Scholarship Program for Those Who Serve Managed by Rupa Shah
Public safety is more than my profession—it is the life I have built in Washington, DC. For the past eight years, I have served in public safety as a Special Police Officer, protecting people, property, and critical facilities. Every shift has taught me that behind every emergency, every frightened person, and every difficult situation is someone depending on another human being to show up. As a single mother raising two young boys in Washington, DC, my commitment to public safety does not end when my shift is over. I have worked long hours, missed holidays, sacrificed time with my children, and carried the emotional weight of knowing that my responsibility is to protect others while hoping my own family remains safe. There have been days when I left for work before my children woke up and returned home physically exhausted, yet I reminded myself that the work I was doing mattered. These experiences have shaped my values of service, integrity, resilience, and compassion. They have taught me that leadership is not about authority but about being someone others can depend on during their hardest moments. They have also shown me the importance of supporting the people who dedicate their lives to serving others. My career in public safety inspired me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. My goal is to continue serving others by advocating for employees, strengthening workplaces, and ensuring the people who protect our communities receive the support, training, and leadership they deserve. I want to use my education to improve the lives of those who dedicate themselves to public service, just as I have dedicated my own life to serving the residents of Washington, DC.

Being a single mother has been the most difficult responsibility I have ever carried, but it has also become the greatest source of my strength. Every decision I make, every sacrifice I endure, and every goal I pursue is rooted in one purpose: creating a better life for my two sons. They have never been my obstacle—they have always been my reason. There are days when I feel like I am carrying the weight of the world alone. As a single parent, there is no one to divide the responsibilities with. When bills are due, I pay them. When my children are sick, I stay up all night. When homework needs to be finished, meals need to be cooked, laundry needs to be done, or another unexpected expense appears, I handle it. Even when I feel physically and emotionally exhausted, life does not pause. My children still need a mother who shows up every single day. Balancing full-time employment, motherhood, and college has tested me in ways I never imagined. My mornings begin before sunrise so I can prepare for work and make sure my boys are ready for their day before starting my own. After a full shift, I come home to continue being a mother before finally opening my laptop late at night to complete assignments while my children sleep. There have been moments when I questioned whether I could continue, but giving up has never been an option. My sons are watching me, and I want them to grow up believing that perseverance is stronger than hardship. Financially, returning to school has required tremendous sacrifice. Every semester means making difficult choices between household needs, educational expenses, and preparing for unexpected emergencies. While many students worry only about exams and deadlines, I also worry about groceries, childcare, transportation, and ensuring my children have everything they need. Those responsibilities have made my educational journey more challenging, but they have also given it deeper meaning. Every class I complete is another step toward providing my family with greater stability and opportunity. I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources because I believe education is the bridge between where my family is today and where we deserve to be tomorrow. My goal is to build a career where I can advocate for others, support employees, and become a compassionate leader who understands that everyone carries struggles others cannot see. Being a single mother has taught me resilience, discipline, compassion, and determination—qualities no textbook can teach. My journey has not been easy, and it continues to require sacrifices every day. However, I refuse to let my circumstances define my future. Instead, I choose to let them fuel my purpose. One day, I hope my sons will look back and remember not the hardships we faced, but the courage it took to overcome them. I want them to know that their mother never stopped fighting for a better future, and because of that, they will have opportunities that once seemed impossible.

People often say education changes lives, but for me, education is about survival. It is about breaking a cycle, creating stability, and proving to my two young sons that where you begin does not determine where you will finish. I am a 29-year-old single mother raising two incredible boys while working full-time as a Special Police Officer and pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources. Every morning begins long before the sun rises. I wake up while most of the city is still asleep to prepare for work, get my children ready, and make sure they have everything they need before I begin my own day. By the time I return home, I am exhausted, but my responsibilities are far from over. I become a mother, a tutor, a cook, and eventually a college student late into the night. There are many nights when I study after my children are asleep because that is the only quiet time I have left. Being a single parent means there is no one to split the bills with, no one to take over when I am overwhelmed, and no one to carry the weight when life becomes difficult. Every decision I make is measured by one question: "Will this create a better future for my boys?" That question is what pushed me back into college despite the fear, financial hardship, and uncertainty. My dream is to build a career in Human Resources where I can help people find opportunities, support employees during difficult moments, and become the kind of leader who leads with both professionalism and compassion. I know what it feels like to carry invisible burdens while trying to show up every day. Those experiences have taught me resilience, empathy, and perseverance—qualities I hope to bring into my future career. Receiving this scholarship would mean far more than financial assistance. It would mean breathing room. It would help pay for tuition, books, and educational expenses while reducing the constant worry of how everything will be paid for. Instead of wondering whether I can afford the next semester, I could devote even more energy to earning the education that will transform my family's future. More than anything, I want my sons to remember that they watched their mother refuse to quit. I want them to remember the late nights, the early mornings, the sacrifices, and the determination that carried our family forward. I want them to understand that success is not measured by how easy the journey was but by the courage to keep moving when giving up would have been easier. This scholarship is not simply an investment in my education. It is an investment in a family determined to rewrite its story. I cannot change the challenges we have faced, but I can change what comes next. With this opportunity, I will continue working toward a future where my children grow up knowing that hope, perseverance, and education have the power to change generations.

Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household taught me the meaning of sacrifice at a young age. My mother raised my brother and me on her own while working long hours to provide for our family. Because she was our only source of income, my older brother often had to put his own childhood on hold to take care of me. Looking back, I realize he missed out on many experiences that teenagers should have because our family simply did not have another choice. For a long time, I carried the feeling that I was a burden, even though I now understand that none of it was my fault. Today, I find myself raising two sons as a single mother, and there are moments when I worry about repeating the same cycle. That fear is exactly what motivates me to keep pushing forward. I work full time while earning my bachelor’s degree because I want to create a different future for my children. The days are long, and the responsibilities can feel overwhelming, but every assignment I complete and every class I pass brings me closer to financial stability and new opportunities. I want my sons to see that challenges do not define us—our determination does. These experiences have inspired me to pursue a career in human resources, where I can help people feel supported, valued, and treated fairly. My journey has taught me that perseverance is built through hardship, and I want others to know they are capable of overcoming their own obstacles. By earning my degree and building a meaningful career, I hope to break generational cycles, provide a better life for my children, and show my community that where you begin does not determine where you can go.

Choosing a career in human resources was not a decision I made overnight. It came from my life experiences, my professional growth, and my desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Throughout my career, I have worked in leadership roles where I have trained employees, resolved conflicts, supported coworkers, and helped create positive working relationships. Those experiences showed me that every successful organization begins with its people. I realized that I wanted a career where I could help employees grow, support fair workplace practices, and contribute to building environments where people feel respected, valued, and empowered. That realization led me to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with the goal of building a career in human resources. As a single mother raising two young boys while working full time, returning to college has required tremendous sacrifice. My days begin before sunrise and often end long after my children have gone to bed. After working a full shift, I come home to help with homework, prepare meals, clean the house, and take care of my family before I can focus on my own assignments. There are many nights when I stay awake studying because I know that every completed course brings me one step closer to the future I want to create. Although balancing work, school, and motherhood is challenging, it has strengthened my resilience, discipline, and determination. Earning a degree in this field will have a life-changing impact on both my family and my future. Professionally, it will provide me with the education and qualifications needed to transition into human resources, opening doors to leadership opportunities and long-term career growth. My goal is to become an HR professional who advocates for employees, supports ethical workplace practices, and helps organizations create cultures where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. I want to be the type of leader who listens, solves problems, and encourages others to reach their full potential. Personally, earning my degree means creating financial stability and new opportunities for my children. As a first-generation college student, I understand the importance of breaking generational barriers. I want my sons to grow up watching their mother achieve goals that once seemed out of reach. I hope my journey teaches them that education is one of the most powerful investments they can make in themselves and that difficult circumstances should never prevent them from pursuing their dreams. This degree represents far more than a career change. It represents hope, perseverance, and the opportunity to rewrite my family’s future. It will allow me to provide a better life for my children while building a career centered on helping others succeed. I also hope to continue my education by earning a master’s degree and eventually a doctorate so I can expand my knowledge, mentor future professionals, and become a leader who inspires positive change. Every late night studying and every sacrifice I make today is an investment in a future where my family has greater opportunities, and where I can use my education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
A Grandmother's Love Single Mom Scholarship
Being a single mother while pursuing a college education has been the greatest challenge of my life. Every day requires me to balance responsibilities that often compete with one another. I am raising two young boys, working full time, and attending college because I know education is the key to creating a better future for my family. While this journey has been rewarding, it has also been filled with sacrifices, exhaustion, and moments where I questioned whether I could continue. Even during those difficult times, I remind myself why I started. My children are depending on me, and they deserve to see what perseverance looks like. My day begins before sunrise as I prepare for work and make sure my sons are ready for school. After working a full shift, I pick them up, help with homework, prepare dinner, clean the house, and make sure they are cared for before I can focus on my own education. By the time my assignments become my priority, I am already physically and mentally drained. Many nights, I stay awake long after my children have fallen asleep, completing discussion posts, researching assignments, or studying for quizzes because those quiet hours are the only time I have to invest in myself. One of the most difficult parts of this journey is carrying every responsibility alone. There is no one to share the daily responsibilities or step in when life becomes overwhelming. If one of my children gets sick, has a school event, or simply needs extra attention, I must rearrange everything else. Missing work affects my income, while falling behind in school can delay my dreams. It often feels like I am constantly choosing between responsibilities that are all equally important. The emotional weight of trying to be everything for everyone can sometimes feel overwhelming. The financial challenges have also been significant. As a single-income household, every dollar has a purpose. I work hard to provide housing, food, clothing, transportation, childcare, and everything my children need while also paying for expenses related to earning my degree. Although financial aid and student loans have helped make college possible, they do not eliminate the stress of budgeting carefully and worrying about unexpected expenses. There have been moments when I wondered if I should pause my education to focus only on surviving, but I know that doing so would only delay the future I am working so hard to build. Despite these hardships, I have discovered strengths I never knew I possessed. I have learned how to manage my time, stay disciplined, and remain focused even when life feels overwhelming. Every class I complete reminds me that progress is possible, even if it happens one assignment at a time. Maintaining strong grades while balancing motherhood and a full-time career has shown me that determination can overcome obstacles that once seemed impossible. I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree because I want to build a career in human resources where I can create opportunities for others while providing long-term stability for my family. More importantly, I want my sons to grow up remembering that their mother refused to let difficult circumstances define her future. I hope they see that success is not about having an easy path—it is about continuing to move forward despite the challenges. Every sacrifice I make today is an investment in their future, and that is what gives me the strength to keep going. My education is more than a personal goal; it is a promise to my children that our story will be one of resilience, hope, and perseverance.
