Children are so easily influenced by their environments. With their creative minds they create amazing worlds full of hope and magic far different from the one we live in today. This is creativity is what has inspired me to follow the path of pediatric medicine. I wish to add to the light of a child’s life and to make seeing a doctor not something frightening but something g that makes then smile. Not only would I like to impact the children but also their families too. Parents of a sick child is the one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve seen, the only thing they can do for their child is be the voice and hope a doctor hears them in time to help. Right before I was born, my umbilical cord wrapped around my neck and my parents were informed that they had a difficult choice to make. Either the doctors would remove the cord before I was delivered allowing liquid to rush into my lungs or I was delivered with the cord around my neck cutting off my oxygen supply for a-little over 3 minutes. My parents chose the first option in hopes that the doctors would be able to remove the liquid fast and all would be well but that’s as not the case. In removing the cord, the amount of liquid that rushed into my lungs caused the capillaries on my left lung to burst filling Mt chest variety with blood. I was rushed away from my parents to be treated leaving my parents fearful of losing their child. I was given a chest tube and had the liquid removed from my lungs and remained in the NICU for 2 weeks. Of course I don’t remember any of this but growing older and hearing my parents tell me this story still makes them emotional to this day. I would love to be a doctor that can provide comfort to parents facing the fear of losing a child and help then get their child back to the healthy and happy. With my education specifically I am working towards becoming a pediatric oncologist. I have always had an interest in cancer ever since I was first taught about in 9th grade. The cure for cancer is something everyone is chasing but due to cancers completely this is near impossible to reach. Every cancer is caused by a difference set of circumstances, whether due to mutations within the gene, exposure to carcinogens, or a combination of both. This makes finding a cure for cancer extremely difficult due to the number of different ways it could form. I’d love to continue the research in this field to help those who are diagnosed with cancer. Specifically I’d love to work with pediatric cases, children are the most resilient patients. They have creative minds that help them when diagnosed and treated for cancer, this creativity is exactly what inspired me to chase this career. Medicine hasn’t always been my dream, but now I can’t see my future without it. I am an undergraduate biology major attending Nevada State University with a dream of becoming a pediatric oncologist. This goal kind of fell in my lap as I was going some research in my junior year of high school while I was on zoom in AP biology class. We were learning about cancer and how they are different from normal cells. No crazy details were taught but I wanted to know more. After a long google search that has seemed to continue today, I have discovered my passion for cancer medicine and how something as simple as turning off a pathway within a cell has ended many lives. I have been lucky enough that the college I chose in fall of 2021 has low tuition rates that are wishing my budget to pay for the past 2 years but as I continue on I’m scared of the financial debt shift of attending medical school. The average med student will leave med school with a “Dr.” title and about $250,000.00 worth of debt. This does cause me to hesitate as I sprint towards be future due to the only way I can achieve my dreams of helping those in need is digging a hole so deep that I’m not sure when I’ll ever get out. I plan on fighting through regardless of the debt that I have because I know that many out there everyday are faced with the fact that their body is trying to kill them from the inside out. I believe everyone researched a second chance of life and should not be scared while they fight for it. Attitude in cancer patients corresponded with patient outcomes so providing a supportive, safe, and helpful environment for someone to fight the hardest fight they will face. Specifically I’d love to work with pediatric cases, children are the most resilient patients. As I sit to write this essay I reflect back on how much the office has truly encroached into my humor. I first watch the office when covid hit during my junior year of high school. I was bored with nothing better to do but little did I know that I would quote Jim, Dwight, and Michael everyday after that. It started off with the “that’s what she said” something simple but common enough that regardless of watching the show everyone would laugh. Then as I continued to watch it got worse, I would quote the office and get stares from the family members because they were involuted when it came to Michael Scott humor. This has never stopped me from cracking the jokes but now they do the same without ever watching the office… “well, well, we’ll, how the turn tables”. In 7th grade I joined a field trip through my school to explore what it mean to be a “WOMEN IN STEM”. As the young student as I was I didn’t know what STEM was or how it would have changed the trajectory of my education. I’m a room filled with girls, we discussed some statistics showing the little female employment in science, technology, engineering, and mathematic fields in Nevada. Here I found a passion for science. Even as a young girl I’ve always lived a challenge but I didn’t realize how challenging being a women in this field would be. As I continue through my education journey I find that I would be looked over or passed on as being a girl. This bruised my confidence and set me back further as I hid behind others to get by. When I reached college I found a small group of girls who had faced similar challenges to mine. Through this small community we built we help one another come out of our shells and made our voices heard in our classes. Through this my confidence was built up again and I pushed myself to be more competitive on the field I am chasing. Even though I still have years left in my education journey I aspire to influence more women and girls who have had their voices lowered raise the up to be heard and thrive in the STEM community.
