Bio

After a difficult marriage, I'm now a single mom starting over. I was married for twenty-one years to a man who always undermined me. Leaving him was challenging, but necessary for my health and children. Despite never living on my own before, I worked my way up from customer service to branch manager, and then to junior project manager in construction. Although a layoff interrupted my progress, I'm determined to rebuild my foundation. As a woman in the construction industry, I strive for career opportunities based on merit, not gender. Earning an Associates Degree will help me achieve my goals and regain confidence.

Choosing to pursue a career in construction after spending a year as a junior project manager, and over eight years as a construction materials distributor, was a pivotal moment for me, one that solidified my passion for the industry. While my time in that role provided valuable exposure to the intricacies of project management, it also revealed my deep fascination with the physical aspects of construction and the way ideas transform into tangible structures that shape our environment. During my year as a junior project manager, I enjoyed coordinating teams and managing timelines, but I often found myself drawn to the onsite activities. I loved witnessing how every detail, from the foundational beams to the finishing touches, came together to create something meaningful. This hands-on aspect ignited my desire to be more directly involved in the construction process. I realized that my true passion lies in building not just managing projects, but being part of the workforce that actualizes those visions. There was something exhilarating about the challenges faced on the ground, the collaboration with diverse teams, and the satisfaction of seeing a project take shape. Each day brought new challenges, and I thrived on problem-solving in real-time. As I navigated my responsibilities, I also became acutely aware of the barriers that women face in the construction field. Rather than deter me, these challenges motivated me to break through them. I wanted to prove that women can excel in construction, and I aspired to become a role model for others. Transitioning from project management to a more hands-on role in construction feels like a step toward aligning my career with my passions. I am committed to embracing the complexities of the industry and driving change from within. With every project I take on, I hope to contribute not just to the structures we build but to the future of the industry itself, a future where diversity is valued and women's contributions are recognized and celebrated. In this new chapter of my career, I aim to leverage my project management skills while actively engaging in the physical work of construction. I believe that by harnessing my strengths and cultivating resilience, I can make a meaningful impact. I am excited about the journey ahead, knowing that every challenge I face will not only help me grow but will also pave the way for other women who aspire to follow similar paths in this dynamic industry.

My journey as a first-generation and low-income student has been a remarkable one, filled with both challenges and triumphs. Growing up, my family struggled to make ends meet, and the idea of going to college seemed like a distant dream. Without the guidance of parents who had experienced higher education, I often felt lost and overwhelmed. Yet, these obstacles only fueled my determination to break the cycle of poverty and create a better future for myself and my children. Being a first-generation student has meant learning to navigate the complexities of the education system on my own. I had to learn to advocate for myself, seek out resources, and connect with mentors who could provide the support and encouragement I needed. These experiences have taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of building a network of allies who believe in my potential. Surviving as a low-income single parent, the financial burden of pursuing higher education has been a significant challenge. Balancing work, family responsibilities, and academic commitments has required careful planning, time management, and unwavering determination. Higher education will equip me with the knowledge and skills needed to advocate for domestic abuse survivors, promote gender equality, and support individuals in male-dominated professions. Attending college is crucial to me because it represents a pathway to empowerment and transformation. It is an investment in my future and the future of my children, providing them with a foundation of hope and possibility. With a college degree, I will be better positioned to create programs that address the needs of my community, mentor those who seek guidance, and contribute to the ongoing fight for social justice and equality. In summary, my journey as a first-generation and low-income student is fraught with challenges, yet it is also marked by resilience, growth, and determination. Attending college is not just a personal achievement; it is a testament to the power of education to change lives and build a brighter future for all.

Being a student and a single parent simultaneously has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. Balancing academic demands with the needs of my children has been overwhelming, especially after enduring the pain of a mentally abusive marriage. However, through these challenges, I have found the strength to rebuild my confidence and carve out a promising future for myself and my children. Pursuing my education while raising my children alone requires exceptional resilience and determination. The time constraints of academic commitments often conflict with parental duties, making it difficult to allocate adequate time for both. Financial pressures add another layer of complexity, as managing tuition fees alongside everyday expenses can be daunting. Moreover, the emotional toll of single parenthood can be particularly taxing for me. Without the support of a partner, I face the demands of parenthood alone, often leading to feelings of isolation and exhaustion. Maintaining focus on my studies while ensuring the well-being of my children has strained my mental health. One of the most profound challenges I have faced is regaining my self-confidence after escaping a mentally abusive marriage. The relationship eroded my sense of self-worth, leaving deep emotional scars. Healing and rebuilding my confidence have been intricate and requires time, support, and self-compassion. Rediscovering my value and capabilities has been paramount. Engaging in positive self-talk, seeking therapy, and surrounding myself with encouraging individuals has aided in my recovery. Embracing my role as a single parent as an opportunity for personal growth and empowerment has been crucial. Demonstrating resilience and determination in the face of adversity serves as a powerful example to my children, instilling in them the belief that overcoming challenges is possible. A scholarship can be a transformative catalyst for me as I strive to achieve my academic and professional aspirations. The financial relief provided by a scholarship alleviates some of the economic burdens, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on financial concerns. This can lead to improved academic performance and overall well-being. Beyond the financial aspect, receiving a scholarship is a testament to my capabilities and potential. It is an acknowledgment of the hard work, dedication, and perseverance that have brought me to this point. For me, as a single parent, this recognition is immensely validating and can significantly boost my self-esteem. A scholarship opens doors to opportunities that might have seemed unattainable. It provides access to higher education and professional development, equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in my chosen field. As a single parent in a male-dominated industry, earning a scholarship is a powerful statement that challenges stereotype and demonstrates that women can achieve greatness in any domain. The benefits of a scholarship extend beyond me as the recipient. By pursuing and attaining academic and professional success, I set a remarkable example for my children. I prove that obstacles can be overcome, that dreams can be realized, and that resilience and determination are key to achieving one's goals. This inspiration motivates my children to strive for their own aspirations, fostering a legacy of perseverance and achievement. The journey of being a student and a single parent is fraught with challenges, yet it is also rich with opportunities for growth and triumph. Regaining confidence after a mentally abusive marriage is a testament to my strength and resilience. With the support of a scholarship, I can pave the way for a brighter future for myself and my children, proving that greatness is attainable regardless of the obstacles faced.
Jennifer Gephart Memorial Working Mothers Scholarship
Navigating life as a single mother after a challenging marriage has been a transformative journey for me. After twenty-one years of being confined to the role of caretaker by my former spouse, who made minimal financial contributions and sought to maintain my dependency, I chose to forge my own path independently. Leaving a troubled home at sixteen, I supported myself while living with a relative and entered what I believed would be a lifelong partnership. Recognizing the necessity of leaving for my well-being and that of my children, I advanced from a customer service representative to branch manager, and then to a junior project manager with a national construction firm. Despite facing a workforce reduction layoff after a year in that role, I remained determined. As a woman in the construction industry, I often struggle to be heard and recognized for my capabilities in a male-dominated environment. My aim has always been to seek equal opportunities based on my work ethic, not my gender. Currently, I am starting over and striving to re-establish stability. Pursuing an associate’s degree is a strategic step toward achieving my career goals and regaining confidence. Balancing work and family require careful time management. Here's my approach: I create a schedule for work and family time, prioritize tasks by urgency, use digital calendars to track deadlines and events, and allocate self-care time. This routine helps me achieve career goals while being present for my family. Recognizing and prioritizing personal values is important. Ensuring children receive support, continuously pursuing growth opportunities, and maintaining integrity in all areas are essential aspects to consider. Aligning actions with these values assists in making decisions that benefit both professional and family life. For example, selecting flexible jobs can facilitate attendance at significant family events. Overcoming challenges in a predominantly male industry and dealing with workforce reductions necessitates resilience. Reflecting on previous achievements, seeking feedback and continuous learning, and maintaining adaptability all contribute to building this resilience. This resilience supports the pursuit of career goals and ensures stability. Pursuing an associate’s degree equips me with the necessary knowledge and skills for career advancement. Dedication to education sets a positive example for my children regarding lifelong learning. Strong support systems help maintain balance: relatives provide childcare and emotional support, professional networks offer guidance, and community resources contribute to education. These systems aid in managing responsibilities and achieving goals confidently. Achieving balance between work and family while shaping career goals involves strategic planning, prioritizing values, resilience, learning, and support. By integrating these elements, challenges can be navigated, leading to both personal fulfillment and professional success.
