Greetings Donors, My personality is best described as witty, playful, helpful, outgoing, and bold. These traits are essential for a Family Attorney, I believe. I’m the only child of a single-parent family who loves helping others. Throughout my journey, I have consistently achieved Dean’s List status. I am a member of the Honor Society while navigating the challenges of remote learning through FLVS during the pandemic. I aim to practice law in the United States and the Bahamas to help develop better opportunities for Bahamian children like myself. I am deeply committed to service and have been honored to serve as the President (Captain) of my church’s youth ministry. This role was bestowed upon me due to my strong leadership skills and unwavering commitment to positively impacting. Additionally, I served as the chaplain for my school key club during grade 10 and was recently appointed vice president, furthering my dedication to service within my environment. Strength Through Change “How do you rebuild when the person who was supposed to stay chooses to leave? In just a few months, my mother went from a devoted wife to a single parent, forced to carry the weight of two. My father walked away, leaving behind unanswered questions and a child trying to understand why. But while his presence faded, my mother’s strength never wavered. She sacrificed, she endured, and she showed me that true strength isn’t about who stays–it’s about who refuses to give up.” I spent moments contemplating how my existence would differ if I had grown up with the two parents in a conventional family structure. The security I experienced would have been stronger? I would have faced less uncertainty regarding my value in life. Time revealed that my unusual upbringing strengthened me instead of making me less complete. Through my early independence I learned both the importance of hard work and the power of personal stability, which I developed instead of seeking it from others. The events of my life have created a path toward my future aspirations. I understand what I want to do in life because I am certain I will serve others through the use of my talents. The experience of abandonment has taught me the personal value of my worth which was damaged by other people’s decisions. My life purpose is to guide and support others as a mentor along with community work and through an advocacy career. The lessons I learned from my hardships will develop into a purposeful direction that I can pursue in the future. I want to provide assistance to children who experience abandonment due to parental absence. Single mothers who try to balance their life independently can find my support. Young people will discover their sense of belonging through programs I develop. I will choose any direction that leads me to empower people who require support because my ultimate objective remains constant. The single-parent home environment where I grew up became my inspiration rather than a source of restriction. My experiences taught me love and strength come from individuals who remain present throughout life rather than from family composition. My life experience teaches perseverance rather than suffering. Moving ahead, I will use my personal experiences to prevent anyone from doubting their worth as I once did. This learning experience shaped my understanding that facing difficulties makes us stronger than they make us. The obstacles I encountered in my childhood development motivate me to generate beneficial changes in the lives of people. Direct observation has proven to me that both missing a single person leaves an empty space and having someone committed and caring produces transformative impact. Rising Through Adversity “What happens when the man who is supposed to protect and love you chooses to walk away instead? In 2012, my father married my mother, vowing commitment and family. But within months, those vows unraveled. As their relationship crumbled, so did his role in my life. That summer, my mother and I left the chaos behind–but he moved on even faster.” I attempted to believe that his absence would end but he would eventually return to be the father I wanted. His connection to my life faded into a temporary and distant presence. The person who would appear and disappear instantly. The birth of his son with this woman made me feel completely invisible to him. He established a fresh family life that abandoned me in complete neglect after he left me behind. What an “amazing” father he was…from afar I observed him. The way he was able to give another person the reliability and affection that he lacked when it came to me. When someone who should provide love shows they will not stay, how can you continue? The question about what to do next brought me endless mental turmoil for multiple years. His absence created an empty space which became worse when he returned unexpectedly. I constantly asked myself whether I failed to keep him by his side or if I made mistakes that forced him to leave. Little five year old me in shambles because of the way I never grasped the reality of the situation. As time went on I understood the reality that his decisions always revolved around himself rather than caring about me. At first, I tried to pretend it didn’t hurt. I threw myself into school, activities, and friendships, anything to distract me. But pain doesn’t just disappear when you ignore it. I had to face it. I had to accept that I couldn’t control whether my father stayed or left, but I could control how I responded. So, I stopped waiting for him. I found strength in my mother, my grandmother, and my family. The people who have always been there for me despite everything. They showed me that love isn’t about words; it’s about presence. Instead of dwelling on what I lacked, I focused on what I had. I excelled in school, took on leadership roles, and committed myself to helping others. I decided that my father’s absence would not define me, but my resilience would. If I could give advice to someone facing the same struggle, I would tell them this: “You are not unworthy just because someone fails to see your worth. Stop chasing after love that is inconsistent. Focus on those who stay, who choose you every single day. And most importantly, build a life that makes you proud, with or without the validation of those who walked away.” Adversity isn’t about what you lose, it’s about what you gain. My father’s absence could have broken me, but instead, it made me stronger. And that is How I rise, not by waiting for love…but by becoming the person I needed all along.
Nabi Nicole Grant Memorial Scholarship
“My fellow Bahamians and residents of the Bahamas,” the voice of the Honorable Hubert Alexander Minnis, Prime Minister at the time, echoed through our homes on March 15, 2020. He stood before the nation, steady but filled with the gravity of the moment as he announced the first confirmed case of COVID-19. “We are facing a time of unprecedented challenges,” he said, and the weight of those words hit hard. The country, known for its vibrant communities and bustling streets, was about to be locked down.  As the lockdown unfolded, I faced one of the greatest challenges of my life, trying to balance my academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and personal life while attending both online and in-person classes. The shift to virtual learning was overwhelming. Zoom calls replaced face-to-face instruction, but the technical glitches and isolation made it feel like I was drowning in assignments. When in-person classes resumed, I found myself juggling two completely different environments, one that demanded my focus through a screen, and the other that required my physical presence in class. The constant shifting between them left me exhausted. Some days, I felt the weight of it all crushing me. I questioned whether I was spreading myself too thin, whether I could truly excel in all areas. My self-doubt consumed me, and I wondered if I was capable of managing the demands placed upon me. The responsibility of balancing schoolwork, extracurriculars, and supporting my family became overwhelming. In those moments of despair, I turned to my faith. Instead of letting anxiety overtake me, I found solace in prayer and scripture. Philippians 4:13 became my guiding light: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Those words reminded me that even in my darkest moments, I was never alone. I could draw strength from a higher power, one who had equipped me with the resilience to keep moving forward, no matter the challenge. Romans 8:28 also resonated deeply with me: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This verse reminded me that every challenge, every struggle, was part of a bigger plan, God’s plan. My academic difficulties were not obstacles, but opportunities for growth and preparation. Instead of focusing on the overwhelming nature of my responsibilities, I began to see them as blessings.There were nights when I sat at my desk, exhausted and tearful, wondering if I could keep going. But in those moments, I reminded myself that God had not brought me this far to leave me. His presence filled my heart with peace, and I leaned into my faith for comfort. Little by little, I realized that I was stronger than I had ever believed. My faith helped me find clarity in the chaos and reminded me of my purpose. Forging a New Path I still remember the night I sat at the kitchen table, staring at a stack of college brochures, feeling both excited and overwhelmed. My grandmother, sat beside me, her warm brown hands folded in her lap, her soft eyes filled with both pride and concern. The light reflected off her short burgundy hair, a color she had worn for as long as I could remember, a symbol of her quiet confidence. “You’re going to do something none of us have done before,” she said with a proud but worried smile. “It won’t be easy, but you’ve always found a way.” Her words stuck with me. I was stepping into a world that no one in my family had navigated before, and while that thought was daunting, it was also incredibly empowering. Being a first-generation college student means more than just being the first to pursue higher education, it means carrying the hopes and dreams of my family while also learning to find my own way. Without a roadmap to follow, I had to figure out everything on my own, from college applications to financial aid forms. There were moments of doubt when I wondered if I was making the right decisions, but each challenge pushed me to be resourceful and proactive. Overcoming Loss for Growth "You'll help me!" my grammy shouted. As I approached my grandparent's room, my mother was already there trying to get my grandfather to respond. She instructed me to call 911 at that very moment. Everything started happening quickly. My uncle began performing CPR on my grandfather while my aunt started praying. It was Gippo's 77th birthday, and he had just gotten up to go to church. The EMS arrived within minutes and took my grandfather to the hospital. At the same time, my grandfather's sister also was experiencing cardiac arrest. Sadly, on February 4th, both my grandfather (Gippo) and his sister passed away within minutes of each other. At their funeral, as I listened to all of the people's eulogies speaking about Gippo and Aunty Doreen, I realized that life is so short and we often delay things for later. My grandfather frequently lectured me about having integrity, loyalty, and discernment. On weekends, we’d talk for hours about his childhood, his life as an electrician, and his role as a father and husband. He would always end our conversation by saying, "Lexie, remember your name is all you have in this life. Be careful what you do in life because the world is a circle". In the days following their funeral, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss. Gippo had been my mentor and inspiration. His words echoed in my mind, urging me to live a life of purpose and integrity. As I sat in my room, surrounded by the memories of our conversations, I made a decision. I would honor Gippo’s memory by applying myself more in school and participating actively in clubs and community service. I refused to let my grief consume me and instead turned it into fuel for my ambitions. Challenges, no matter how painful, shape us. This loss was my defining moment; a test of resilience, strength, and determination. I started by helping the student council out at school, a role that initially intimidated me. Public speaking and decision-making were daunting, but I pushed through my fears. I worked outside my comfort zone and became the voice for my peers, striving to make school a better environment. Gippo always said leadership was about service, and I took that to heart. Beyond school, I remembered how he always emphasized helping others. He believed true success was measured by the impact you had on others. With this in mind, I began volunteering. I tutored younger kids, organized community service events, and helped out however I could. Every Time I saw a smile on someone’s face, I felt connected to my grandfather, knowing I was carrying on his legacy of kindness and service. The journey wasn’t easy. At times, I felt overwhelmed balancing school, clubs, volunteering. There were nights I stayed up questioning my own abilities. Some moments, I turned to Gippo’s words. Watching my mother balance multiple responsibilities while leading by example showed me that success isn’t about where you start but how you push forward. Living with my grandmother reinforced the importance of family and giving back, inspiring my passion for advocacy. Despite financial and personal obstacles, I have remained committed to my education and community. The Long Walk To The Start Line There’s a moment during every race where the silence becomes louder than the pounding footsteps on the track. A breathless hush, charged with anticipation, hangs in the air. I often find myself on the cusp of this silence. Not just when I'm racing, but in life. This is my story of discovering what it means to start, not with the loud bang of a starting pistol, but with a long walk to the start line, one step at a time. Growing up, I was surrounded by storytellers- my Gippo, my Grammy, and my mom, who filled our house with anecdotes, lessons, and wisdom. Gippo always told me that a name is more than just a collection of letters. It’s a reputation, a mark you leave on the world. The first time I understood his wisdom was during middle school. I was an average student, involved in a few clubs, but nothing that made me feel passionate. That all changed when I joined the debate team. It was here that I learned the power of my voice and how important it was to stand by my convictions. The hours I spent practicing and preparing for debates taught me more than just public speaking. They taught me resilience, critical thinking, and courage. As I entered high school, I carried that newfound confidence with me, but life had a way of throwing challenges in my path. My grandfather passed away in February of my junior year. Losing Gippo shattered something inside me. It felt like a piece of my foundation had crumbled, leaving me adrift in a sea of uncertainty. One of the most defining moments came during my junior year when I had the opportunity to lead a fundraising campaign for my Key Club organization. As the new upcoming Vice President, I tried my best to achieve our goal of providing clothing for our underprivileged children. Who couldn’t afford money for the schools that they wanted to attend. I was elected to lead the team, but this role wasn’t easy. The campaign required coordinating volunteers, organizing events, and reaching out to those willing to donate. At first, I was overwhelmed. I wasn’t sure if I could manage the responsibility after all, I was just a high school student. But as Gippo’s words echoed in my mind, I reminded myself that every challenge is an opportunity to build my name and reputation. As I prepare for the next step, college I’m filled with excitement but also a sense of responsibility. I see college as an opportunity to not only further my education but also to refine my vision for the future. "Lexie, come for your breakfast," my mother called from the kitchen. As I walked in, the warmth of home greeted me with the aroma of a traditional Bahamian breakfast—yellow grits, tuna salad, and tea. The radio hummed with High Hopes by Panic! At the Disco, a song whose lyrics inspire me to aim higher: “Mama said, 'Fulfill the prophecy, be something greater, and go make a legacy.'” Those words echo the love and guidance my mother has always shown me, encouraging me to set meaningful goals and achieve them, not just for myself but for others as well. Growing up in a loving household, I learned the value of community and kindness. Yet, I also saw children around me who didn’t have that same stability and faced hardships that no child should endure. Wanting to make a difference, I began volunteering with organizations like Vacation Bible School, my church’s Sunday school, Lex Societas, and Key Club. These experiences opened my eyes to the challenges many children face and deepened my desire to help. My work there didn’t just give me skills; but a purpose. Being appointed as Vice President of my former school’s Key Club, I wanted to take that purpose further. I led fundraisers and clothing drives to support children in need. One day, while serving breakfast during a clothing drive, I saw the children’s smiles and their mothers’ quiet relief, and I felt an undeniable sense of purpose. As a senior level student, maintaining good mental health is essential for our personal growth, academic success, and overall quality of life. One of the primary reasons why I believe mental health is important is that it directly affects our ability to function and thrive in various areas of our lives. When our mental health is in a good state, we are better equipped to handle the challenges and stresses that come our way. We are more resilient, focused, and better able to make decisions that positively impact our lives. On the other hand, when our mental health is compromised, it can lead to a range of issues, such as difficulty concentrating, feelings of anxiety or depression, and even physical health problems. Maintaining mental wellness is a continuous process that requires a multifaceted approach. Personally, one of the most important aspects of maintaining my mental wellness is engaging in regular physical activity. Whether going for a brisk walk, participating in a sport, or practicing yoga, physical exercise has been shown to impact mental health positively. It helps to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall well-being. In addition to physical activity, I also find that engaging in activities that bring me joy and a sense of purpose is crucial for my mental wellness. At the disco. I always loved the lyrics of this song, but in particular, when he sang, "Mama said, "Fulfill the prophecy be something greater, and go make a legacy." I chose those lyrics because they spoke volumes about setting goals, achieving them, and leaving a mark on this earth. I have volunteered at various organizations, and my experiences have cultivated and honed my leadership skills, preparing me to become a family lawyer. As the current Key Club Vice President at my school, one of my goals was to engage in and steer a few fundraisers to help children of all ethnic backgrounds. I wanted to continue supporting and making a positive difference in their lives, for even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
"You'll help me!" my grammy shouted. As I approached my grandparent's room, my mother was already there trying to get my grandfather to respond. She instructed me to call 911 at that very moment. Everything started happening quickly. My uncle began performing CPR on my grandfather while my aunt started praying. It was Gippo's 77th birthday, and he had just gotten up to go to church. The EMS arrived within minutes and took my grandfather to the hospital. However, at the same time, my grandfather's sister also was experiencing cardiac arrest. Sadly, on February 4th, both my grandfather (Gippo) and his sister passed away within minutes of each other. At their funeral, as I listened to all of the people's eulogies speaking about Gippo and Aunty Doreen, I realized that life is so short and we often delay things for later. My grandfather frequently lectured me about having integrity, loyalty, and discernment. We talked for hours on the weekend about his childhood, life as an electrician, a father, and a husband. Gippo would always end our conversation by saying, "Lexie, remember your name is all you have in this life. Be careful what you do in life because the world is a circle". In the days following their funeral, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss. My grandfather had been my mentor, my confidant, and my inspiration. His words echoed in my mind, urging me to live a life of purpose and integrity. As I sat in my room, surrounded by the memories of our conversations, I made a decision. I would honor Gippo’s memory by applying myself more in school and participating actively in clubs and community service. I started by helping the student council out at school. I gave suggestions and informed them of what my peers wanted to say but could not. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and became the voice of the students to make the school a better environment. Gippo always said that leadership was about service, and I took that to heart. Of course, it wasn't just about school activities. I remember how Gippo and I would often talk about helping others. He believed that true success was measured by the impact you had on the lives of others. With this in mind, I started volunteering my free time. I tutored younger kids, organized community service events, and helped whenever possible. Whenever I saw a smile on someone’s face, I felt a connection to my grandfather, knowing that I was carrying his legacy of kindness and service. The journey wasn’t easy. Sometimes, I felt overwhelmed by the demands of school, clubs, and volunteering. There were moments when the grief of losing Gippo felt too heavy to bear. But in those moments, I would always refer back to his words. Those words became my mantra, guiding me through the tough times and reminding me of the importance of perseverance and integrity. Reflecting on that difficult period, I realize how much I have grown. Gippo’s sudden passing was a profound loss, but it also became a source of strength and motivation for me. On July 9th, 2007, a beautiful baby named Alexia was born into this world to a loving family. Although, at the time, everything seemed to be swell, a few years later, everything would come to a quick stop. My parents separated shortly after the year of 2013, and I found myself feeling lost. It's as if one day, I had a father, and the next, he just disappeared in his endeavors. Yet, watching my mother struggle to take care of me while handling her own issues instilled in me a deep sense of determination. I found a drive to work hard and help not only myself but others as well, a determination that has guided me to this day. On New Year's Eve, I claimed that 2024 would be the year I would prove myself to others and lend a helping hand. This scholarship will enable me to do so, allowing me to see that hard work pays off and that it will be rewarding if I put my mind to it. Even without the support of those I thought were closest to me, I can still make a difference. I overcame rejection and learned to pursue what I believe is meant for me. Through Christ, I made significant steps toward my future despite the rocky foundation I unfortunately encountered.  As a seventeen-year-old senior student, I have made the choice to use anything that has benefited me to support others. On the dawn of Easter Monday in 2019, I arrived at Glory Carrier's outreach Ministry grounds to help prepare for their first ministry giveback. The air was chilly, and the anticipation was thick, each of us eagerly awaiting the start of this significant event. As the sun rose, the crowd, united in purpose, where they began to settle, forming a line. The aromas of the hot breakfast were now flowing in the air. Grits, tuna salad, steamed sausage, and steamed mackerel were offered, and the volunteers generously filled their plates. Sincere laughter filled the church grounds, and over 100 families assembled to have a hot breakfast that we often take for granted. Their joy was palpable, and it was heartwarming to see them enjoying the simple pleasure of a warm meal. Throughout my childhood, I often saw many children who experienced numerous forms of abuse and neglect. My volunteering experiences have cultivated and honed my leadership skills, preparing me to take on the role of a family attorney. As a current Key Club Vice President, I have engaged in and steered a few fundraisers that were immensely profitable in helping children of all ethnic backgrounds. I assisted with a clothing drive alongside serving hot breakfast, an experience that truly lit a spark within me. "Sorry, she will not be able to travel without her American passport," were the words that echoed in my ear as an excited 6-year-old wanting to experience a cruise for the first time. I was stagnant for years due to my inability to travel to the USA since my Father needed to sign several documents on my behalf. My idea of an ideal father figure slowly dwindled because I felt abandoned and unloved.  My saving grace has always been my mother, a pillar of strength and support, who was there to pick up the slack and make me her number one priority. But the absence of the person I held in high regard, my Father, profoundly impacted me. This absence propelled me at a very tender age to pursue a career as a family attorney, a decision deeply rooted in my personal experiences, impacting my career choice and my unwavering commitment. Throughout my childhood, I often saw many children who experienced numerous forms of abuse and neglect. Still, adults usually forget kids are innocent and shouldn't be mistreated because of their mistakes. I have volunteered at many places, including Key Club and a children's outreach program, which has cultivated and honed my leadership skills throughout my participation. Volunteering has shown me that we are surrounded by hurting children receiving limited assistance. “Esther’s mommy died” reverberated through the schoolyard on the morning of May 5th, 2024, a sudden and shocking announcement. The news struck us all with a profound sense of disbelief. Esther, our friend, had never hinted at her mother’s illness. As a friend, I was at a loss for words. The weight of such a loss, especially a parent, is a burden no one should bear. That day, everyone was a little kinder to Esther, understanding the pain she was going through. But then, her world was about to be turned upside down. A few days later, Dr. Small, the principal, summoned Esther to her office. There, two strangers revealed themselves as her biological parents. The shock was palpable, and Esther’s world shattered. Mourning the mother she had known all her life, she now had to come to terms with the sudden reappearance of her biological parents. Esther’s brother burst into the office as the tension was about to boil over. He stood tall, a protective shield around his sister. He clarified to the strangers that Esther was now under his care, and they had to respect that. His firm stance relieved the icy atmosphere as everyone’s gaze met in a silent understanding. At this point, Esther felt numb because she felt God had forgotten her. However, this was just the beginning of a lengthy custody battle. Within a few weeks, Esther’s brother and her biological parents were now in court fighting for her custody. The court battle took a toll on her mentally because she wanted her life to return to normal as before. She couldn’t understand why these people wanted to interfere in her life now because she had never known they existed. She was aware that she was adopted and her adoptive parents loved her like their own. Esther cried many days out to me, expressing that she was afraid of the unknown, and I reassured her that everything would work itself out. At the final court appearance, the Judge allowed Esther to speak, and she said it from the heart. The Judge listened attentively to her as she expressed her feelings, making her feel heard and respected. The Judge decided, and the Judge granted Esther’s wish. A sense of relief, heavy with the weight of the battle they had fought, was distributed throughout the courtroom as the siblings embraced with tears and laughter. Esther felt an instant calm; the relief was tangible, a testament to the emotional journey they had been through and a victory for children’s rights. I felt like Esther was handled with injustice because she entered a situation she had never expected. Facing issues and decisions a child should never have to make. To do this, he must create a fake family, leading him to adopt Anya who is a telepathic girl. Along with marrying Yor, a professional assassin. “You can do anything, everyone can do, but you can do it better”. These words stood out to me the most in the movie “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story”, spoken by his mother. Ben was a black child who faced many challenges including racism, bullying, bad grades, low self-esteem, and a horrible temper. However, his mother was determined to ensure that her boys would succeed, especially since they were being raised by a single mother and were colored. Mrs. Carson battled with challenges of her own including not being able to read and depression, but her weakness only fueled her to encourage her sons even more. One day Mrs. Carson arrived home where she always met the boys watching television and on the spot established a new rule in her home which included the boys only being able to watch TV twice a week, but they would have to read two books and write book reports for each one per week. The boys were initially upset, but this new experience sparked a new liking for them. Their love for reading grew, but young Ben’s imagination escalated. Opening his eyes to a world he never knew existed, inspiring him to become a future doctor because of his newly found passion for science. Fast forward years later Ben was now attending college and studying medicine. He was now battling with the feeling of being unfit and unworthy of becoming a doctor. With the help of his girlfriend and consistent motivation from his mother, he overcame the odds and passed his last examination before the internship. He interviewed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and was chosen to intern because of his sincere passion for making a difference in the medical field. Even though he faced prejudice he never waivered in his desire to become a physician. During his internship, he worked alongside many doctors which curved his career. Ben, now a neurosurgeon performed many dangerous surgeries and was successful. Due to his success rate, a German couple sorted him out in 1987 to operate on their twins who were joined to each other in the back of their head. However, Dr. Carson was facing difficulties trying to figure out a solution on how the surgery would be performed and successful because of its uniqueness. During this time his wife miscarried their twins, leaving him feeling depressed that he couldn’t save his children. This was only a little setback but, Dr. Carson was successful at directing a 70-person team in a twenty-two-hour surgery where he separated the 7-month-old West German Siamese twins. This operation was not only effective but was the first of its kind to be ever performed where the twins’ temperature dropped stopping their hearts and blood flow. I loved when he entered the waiting room where the twin's parents were waiting, asking “Which twin would you like to see first? I was so touched at that moment because the parents embraced him with gratitude. I believe that this movie displayed empathy, gratitude, fear, happiness, and great success. This movie demonstrated how a parent can be your biggest cheerleader especially when you can't see oneself being successful. "Gifted Hands" demonstrated the power of unity and the importance of family support. Always placing God first in every decision played a major role in his life's success. Also, being grounded in his faith and his mother’s consistent motivation kept him wanting to achieve his goals. Therefore, this movie shows how you can face challenges, but can still define the odds and be successful. This movie is definitely a must-watch.
Fall Favs: A Starbucks Stan Scholarship
Smelling the blend aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves dancing in the air always causes me to act like a child in a candy store, excited that fall is here. As I see the colours of the leaves changing to gold, red and orange I can't stop thinking about the upcoming holiday festivities. Whiles Shirley Casear song, "You name it" buzz in my ear. One sip of my favorite Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte always causes me to reflect on how this season brings the family together. Hearing the children foot steps pacing throughout the hallway of my grandparents home, whiles my aunts and mommy converse to each other about keeping an eye on the turkey roasting. Peas n' rice, bake macaroni, and my mommy's famous seafood stuffing hug our noses knowing that dinner will soon be served. Another sip of this well balanced sweet, but spiced flavored latte lands me on the bleachers on Bay Street (Nassau, Bahamas) in the dawn of the morning as the sounds of the cowbell rings, the warmed goat skin drums vibrate with the brass sector all in unison echoing throughout streets of the Bahamians. As the crowd goes wild rocking to the sound of the sweet Junkanoo music, whiles chanting "Valley " "Saxons" "Valley" "Saxons" back and forth as the crowd grows even more excited. The feathered, glittered, and vibrant colored costume paint the Bahamian roads. However, i'm just happy because of my Bahamian roots and experiences. As I take my last sip of this smooth, rich velvety drink it's now the new year and I'm sitting in church with my family. Thanking God for another year He has spare us and with great anticipation for the new year. This drink not only allows me to reflect on the warmth,joy, and unity that this season brings, but it demonstrate that all races celebrate the fall differently. Whiles some families will experience snow, a warm fire pit, roasting marshmallows for smores, wearing their cozy winter sweaters and warm sock. My family and I will embrace each other as we eat our traditional fruit cake and home made Bahamian Benny and coconut cakes (Bahamian candy). This latte symbolizes family and tradition to me. That's why I'm so excited for the fall because my family always create new memories filled with laughter and joy. These are the special times I have grown to love and cherish because family and God means everything to me. Therefore, I'm holding on to my annual tradition of enjoying a Pumpkin Spice latte because it causes me to reflect on all of my memories I have collected throughout the years.

“Lexie, come for your breakfast”, my mother shouted from the kitchen. As I approached the aromas of a traditional Bahamian breakfast, yellow grits and tuna salad were floating in the air and the tea kettle was singing, almost overshadowing the local Radio station (ZNS) blasting the song, High Hopes by Panic! At the disco. I always loved the lyrics of this song but in particular when he sang, “Mama said, "Fulfill the prophecy be something greater, and go make a legacy". I chose those lyrics because they spoke volumes to me about setting goals, achieving them, and leaving a mark on this earth. My personal academic goals are to be able to endure more, take pride in all that is granted to me, be organized, and create good study habits. I believe that once you are grounded academically in your studies you are often motivated to become more successful. My consistency has developed some strong character traits that have molded me into the student I am today. A few traits I possess that people frequently comment on are my ability to be courteous, organized, and responsible, and have strong time management skills. Another, goal for myself is to remain consistent as a volunteer. As the current Key Club Vice President at my school and captain of my church’s youth group, one of my goals was to engage and steer a few fundraisers to help children of all ethnic backgrounds. I also assisted with a clothing drive alongside serving hot breakfast, this experience truly lit a spark within me. Witnessing the children’s warm smiles and their mother’s heartfelt gratitude for the assistance provided deeply moved me. My desire was fueled to continue helping and making a positive difference in their lives for even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. However, because of my involvement and hands-on experience, I have decided to continue helping organizations in assisting women and children of distressed families. I’m presently an 11th-grade student, and I have planned to establish an initiative to assist teenage girls and teen moms with care packages for themselves, hosting hot breakfast giveaways and a book drive. My mother often says a Bahamian proverb, “He who feels it knows it,” but I never understood what she meant, until now. This proverb expresses how only one who has experienced something in their lives whether good or bad knows how to relate. Therefore, my professional career goal is to become a Family attorney within the United States and the Bahamas. This career choice was birthed due to the absence of my father, because of his absence I channeled my feeling of abandonment into something positive. Hence, allowing me to see life differently through the eyes of children who may be in a similar situation like me. Throughout my childhood, I often saw many children who experienced numerous forms of abuse and neglect, but adults often forget kids are innocent and shouldn’t be mistreated because of their mistakes. A future life goal for myself is to become a major contributor to distressed families because I’m going to create a non-profit organization to aid mothers like my own who are struggling to keep their heads above water. Within this organization, I will implement a system that helps women, especially single mothers to care for their children. I will collaborate with lawyers in the same field to offer advice when it comes to court cases and other legal matters. By establishing this system, I will empower women to continue fulfilling their crucial roles while providing the necessary support to overcome their unique challenges. I will establish a mentoring relationship connecting women with a law degree or background to assist as mentors. Additionally, I will initiate a scholarship in the future that helps children have an opportunity to make a difference in their lives. By investing in the next generation, I hope to cultivate leaders who will continue to advocate for women’s empowerment and contribute to positive societal change. My chosen career path I have selected for myself is to enroll in the undergraduate history program at the University of Minnesota. Following taking and passing the LSAT examination and applying for Suffolk University Law School. Within 3 years I’ll earn a Juris Doctor Law degree and successfully pass the multistate professional responsibility examination. I will then qualify to write/pass the bar examination in my state. Finally, I’ll be officially sworn in as a Family attorney. Within 7 years I will complete Law school and I will be entering the law field as a Family attorney ready to fight for families in need of help being their voice of hope. I am confident that once I keep my eyes on my goals this will sharpen my personal development as an individual resulting in me taking steps towards great victories and success.

“Sorry, she will not be able to travel without her American passport,” were the words that echoed in my ear as an excited 6-year-old, wanting to experience a cruise for the first time. This stagnated me for years due to my inability to travel to the USA since my father needed to sign several documents on my behalf. My idea of an ideal father figure slowly dwindled because I felt abandoned and unloved. My saving grace has always been my mother who was there to pick up the slack and make me her number-one priority. As a result of feeling abandoned and neglected by the person I held in high regard, I was propelled at a very tender age to pursue a career as a family attorney. Coupling with my passion for helping others and my volunteerism spirit, further sparked my interest and desire to pursue this career. I am an active executive board member of my school’s Key Club and a youth leader at church. Over the years, I have volunteered my time and service to my church’s Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. I am also a member of the Lex Societas and I often assist with the children’s outreach program. I am pleased to say that these life experiences and opportunities cultivated and honed my leadership skills and passion for helping children like me who may be in similar situations. At the age of six my ideal father figure slowly deteriorated because my daddy left me feeling abandoned and unloved, but my mommy always prioritized me 1st in her life. However, this feeling of abandonment has only propelled me to focus on volunteering within my community and Key Club because of my willingness to help. This experience, along with many disappointments encountered by my daddy, sparked my desire to pursue a career as a family lawyer.
