As the current Key Club Vice President at my school, one of my goals was to engage in and steer a few fundraisers to help children of all ethnic backgrounds. I wanted to continue supporting and making a positive difference in their lives, for even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. My mother often says a Bahamian proverb, 'He who feels it knows it,' which means that only one who has experienced something in their lives, whether good or bad, truly understands it. "You'll help me!" my grammy shouted. As I approached my grandparent's room, my mother was already there trying to get my grandfather to respond. She instructed me to call 911 at that very moment. Everything started happening quickly. My uncle began performing CPR on my grandfather while my aunt started praying. It was Gippo's 77th birthday, and he had just gotten up to go to church. The EMS arrived within minutes and took my grandfather to the hospital. However, at the same time, my grandfather's sister also was experiencing cardiac arrest. Sadly, on February 4th, both my grandfather (Gippo) and his sister passed away within minutes of each other. At their funeral, as I listened to all of the people's eulogies speaking about Gippo and Aunty Doreen, I realized that life is so short and we often delay things for later. My grandfather frequently lectured me about having integrity, loyalty, and discernment. We talked for hours on the weekend about his childhood, life as an electrician, a father, and a husband. Gippo would always end our conversation by saying, "Lexie, remember your name is all you have in this life. Be careful what you do in life because the world is a circle". In the days following their funeral, I felt an overwhelming sense of loss. My grandfather had been my mentor, my confidant, and my inspiration. His words echoed in my mind, urging me to live a life of purpose and integrity. As I sat in my room, surrounded by the memories of our conversations, I made a decision. I would honor Gippo’s memory by applying myself more in school and participating actively in clubs and community service. I started by helping the student council out at school. I gave suggestions and informed them of what my peers wanted to say but could not. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and became the voice of the students to make the school a better environment. Gippo always said that leadership was about service, and I took that to heart. Of course, it wasn't just about school activities. I remember how Gippo and I would often talk about helping others. He believed that true success was measured by the impact you had on the lives of others. With this in mind, I started volunteering my free time. I tutored younger kids, organized community service events, and helped whenever possible. Whenever I saw a smile on someone’s face, I felt a connection to my grandfather, knowing that I was carrying his legacy of kindness and service. The journey wasn’t easy. Sometimes, I felt overwhelmed by the demands of school, clubs, and volunteering. There were moments when the grief of losing Gippo felt too heavy to bear. But in those moments, I would always refer back to his words. Those words became my mantra, guiding me through the tough times and reminding me of the importance of perseverance and integrity. Reflecting on that difficult period, I realize how much I have grown. Gippo’s sudden passing was a profound loss, but it also became a source of strength and motivation for me. On July 9th, 2007, a beautiful baby named Alexia was born into this world to a loving family. Although, at the time, everything seemed to be swell, a few years later, everything would come to a quick stop. My parents separated shortly after the year of 2013, and I found myself feeling lost. It's as if one day, I had a father, and the next, he just disappeared in his endeavors. Yet, watching my mother struggle to take care of me while handling her own issues instilled in me a deep sense of determination. I found a drive to work hard and help not only myself but others as well, a determination that has guided me to this day. On New Year's Eve, I claimed that 2024 would be the year I would prove myself to others and lend a helping hand. This scholarship will enable me to do so, allowing me to see that hard work pays off and that it will be rewarding if I put my mind to it. Even without the support of those I thought were closest to me, I can still make a difference. I overcame rejection and learned to pursue what I believe is meant for me. Through Christ, I made significant steps toward my future despite the rocky foundation I unfortunately encountered.  As a seventeen-year-old senior student, I have made the choice to use anything that has benefited me to support others. With the aid of this scholarship, I could pursue a career as a Family attorney. My future goal is a dream and a commitment to social change. On the dawn of Easter Monday in 2019, I arrived at Glory Carrier's outreach Ministry grounds to help prepare for their first ministry giveback. The air was chilly, and the anticipation was thick, each of us eagerly awaiting the start of this significant event. As the sun rose, the crowd, united in purpose, where they began to settle, forming a line. The aromas of the hot breakfast were now flowing in the air. Grits, tuna salad, steamed sausage, and steamed mackerel were offered, and the volunteers generously filled their plates. Sincere laughter filled the church grounds, and over 100 families assembled to have a hot breakfast that we often take for granted. Their joy was palpable, and it was heartwarming to see them enjoying the simple pleasure of a warm meal. Throughout my childhood, I often saw many children who experienced numerous forms of abuse and neglect. My volunteering experiences have cultivated and honed my leadership skills, preparing me to take on the role of a family attorney. As a current Key Club Vice President, I have engaged in and steered a few fundraisers that were immensely profitable in helping children of all ethnic backgrounds. I assisted with a clothing drive alongside serving hot breakfast, an experience that truly lit a spark within me. Witnessing the children's warm smiles and their mother's heartfelt gratitude for their assistance deeply moved me. My desire was fueled to continue helping and making a positive difference in their lives, for even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact. "Sorry, she will not be able to travel without her American passport," were the words that echoed in my ear as an excited 6-year-old wanting to experience a cruise for the first time. I was stagnant for years due to my inability to travel to the USA since my Father needed to sign several documents on my behalf. My idea of an ideal father figure slowly dwindled because I felt abandoned and unloved.  My saving grace has always been my mother, a pillar of strength and support, who was there to pick up the slack and make me her number one priority. But the absence of the person I held in high regard, my Father, profoundly impacted me. This absence propelled me at a very tender age to pursue a career as a family attorney, a decision deeply rooted in my personal experiences, impacting my career choice and my unwavering commitment. Throughout my childhood, I often saw many children who experienced numerous forms of abuse and neglect. Still, adults usually forget kids are innocent and shouldn't be mistreated because of their mistakes. I have volunteered at many places, including Key Club and a children's outreach program, which has cultivated and honed my leadership skills throughout my participation. “Esther’s mommy died” reverberated through the schoolyard on the morning of May 5th, 2024, a sudden and shocking announcement. The news struck us all with a profound sense of disbelief. Esther, our friend, had never hinted at her mother’s illness. As a friend, I was at a loss for words. The weight of such a loss, especially a parent, is a burden no one should bear. That day, everyone was a little kinder to Esther, understanding the pain she was going through. But then, her world was about to be turned upside down. A few days later, Dr. Small, the principal, summoned Esther to her office. There, two strangers revealed themselves as her biological parents. The shock was palpable, and Esther’s world shattered. Mourning the mother she had known all her life, she now had to come to terms with the sudden reappearance of her biological parents. Esther’s brother burst into the office as the tension was about to boil over. He stood tall, a protective shield around his sister. He clarified to the strangers that Esther was now under his care, and they had to respect that. His firm stance relieved the icy atmosphere as everyone’s gaze met in a silent understanding. At this point, Esther felt numb because she felt God had forgotten her. However, this was just the beginning of a lengthy custody battle. The court battle took a toll on her mentally because she wanted her life to return to normal as before. Esther felt an instant calm; the relief was tangible, a testament to the emotional journey they had been through and a victory for children’s rights. I felt like Esther was handled with injustice because she entered a situation she had never expected. Facing issues and decisions a child should never have to make. For me, this anime is a treasure trove of endless entertainment, and I can watch it over and over without ever growing tired of its spellbinding allure. To do this, he must create a fake family, leading him to adopt Anya who is a telepathic girl. Along with marrying Yor, a professional assassin. The absurdity of their situation provides a fertile ground for both hilarity and heartwarming moments. Each watch reveals new nuances in their interactions and the subtle ways their relationships develop, making it a joy to revisit time and time again. “You can do anything, everyone can do, but you can do it better”. These words stood out to me the most in the movie “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story”, spoken by his mother. Ben was a black child who faced many challenges including racism, bullying, bad grades, low self-esteem, and a horrible temper. However, his mother was determined to ensure that her boys would succeed, especially since they were being raised by a single mother and were colored. Mrs. Carson battled with challenges of her own including not being able to read and depression, but her weakness only fueled her to encourage her sons even more. One day Mrs. Carson arrived home where she always met the boys watching television and on the spot established a new rule in her home which included the boys only being able to watch TV twice a week, but they would have to read two books and write book reports for each one per week. The boys were initially upset, but this new experience sparked a new liking for them. Their love for reading grew, but young Ben’s imagination escalated. Opening his eyes to a world he never knew existed, inspiring him to become a future doctor because of his newly found passion for science. Fast forward years later Ben was now attending college and studying medicine. He was now battling with the feeling of being unfit and unworthy of becoming a doctor. With the help of his girlfriend and consistent motivation from his mother, he overcame the odds and passed his last examination before the internship. He interviewed at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and was chosen to intern because of his sincere passion for making a difference in the medical field. Even though he faced prejudice he never waivered in his desire to become a physician. During his internship, he worked alongside many doctors which curved his career. Ben, now a neurosurgeon performed many dangerous surgeries and was successful. Due to his success rate, a German couple sorted him out in 1987 to operate on their twins who were joined to each other in the back of their head. However, Dr. Carson was facing difficulties trying to figure out a solution on how the surgery would be performed and successful because of its uniqueness. During this time his wife miscarried their twins, leaving him feeling depressed that he couldn’t save his children. This was only a little setback but, Dr. Carson was successful at directing a 70-person team in a twenty-two-hour surgery where he separated the 7-month-old West German Siamese twins. This operation was not only effective but was the first of its kind to be ever performed where the twins’ temperature dropped stopping their hearts and blood flow. I loved when he entered the waiting room where the twin's parents were waiting, asking “Which twin would you like to see first? I was so touched at that moment because the parents embraced him with gratitude. I believe that this movie displayed empathy, gratitude, fear, happiness, and great success. This movie demonstrated how a parent can be your biggest cheerleader especially when you can't see oneself being successful. "Gifted Hands" demonstrated the power of unity and the importance of family support. Always placing God first in every decision played a major role in his life's success. Also, being grounded in his faith and his mother’s consistent motivation kept him wanting to achieve his goals. Therefore, this movie shows how you can face challenges, but can still define the odds and be successful. This movie is definitely a must-watch.

Smelling the blend aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves dancing in the air always causes me to act like a child in a candy store, excited that fall is here. As I see the colours of the leaves changing to gold, red and orange I can't stop thinking about the upcoming holiday festivities. Whiles Shirley Casear song, "You name it" buzz in my ear. One sip of my favorite Starbucks Pumpkin Spice latte always causes me to reflect on how this season brings the family together. Hearing the children foot steps pacing throughout the hallway of my grandparents home, whiles my aunts and mommy converse to each other about keeping an eye on the turkey roasting. Peas n' rice, bake macaroni, and my mommy's famous seafood stuffing hug our noses knowing that dinner will soon be served. Another sip of this well balanced sweet, but spiced flavored latte lands me on the bleachers on Bay Street (Nassau, Bahamas) in the dawn of the morning as the sounds of the cowbell rings, the warmed goat skin drums vibrate with the brass sector all in unison echoing throughout streets of the Bahamians. As the crowd goes wild rocking to the sound of the sweet Junkanoo music, whiles chanting "Valley " "Saxons" "Valley" "Saxons" back and forth as the crowd grows even more excited. The feathered, glittered, and vibrant colored costume paint the Bahamian roads. However, i'm just happy because of my Bahamian roots and experiences. As I take my last sip of this smooth, rich velvety drink it's now the new year and I'm sitting in church with my family. Thanking God for another year He has spare us and with great anticipation for the new year. This drink not only allows me to reflect on the warmth,joy, and unity that this season brings, but it demonstrate that all races celebrate the fall differently. Whiles some families will experience snow, a warm fire pit, roasting marshmallows for smores, wearing their cozy winter sweaters and warm sock. My family and I will embrace each other as we eat our traditional fruit cake and home made Bahamian Benny and coconut cakes (Bahamian candy). This latte symbolizes family and tradition to me. That's why I'm so excited for the fall because my family always create new memories filled with laughter and joy. These are the special times I have grown to love and cherish because family and God means everything to me. Therefore, I'm holding on to my annual tradition of enjoying a Pumpkin Spice latte because it causes me to reflect on all of my memories I have collected throughout the years.

My personal academic goals are to be able to endure more, take pride in all that is granted to me, be organized, and create good study habits. I believe that once you are grounded academically in your studies you are often motivated to become more successful. My consistency has developed some strong character traits that have molded me into the student I am today. A few traits I possess that people frequently comment on are my ability to be courteous, organized, and responsible, and have strong time management skills. Another, goal for myself is to remain consistent as a volunteer. As the current Key Club Vice President at my school and captain of my church’s youth group, one of my goals was to engage and steer a few fundraisers to help children of all ethnic backgrounds. I also assisted with a clothing drive alongside serving hot breakfast, this experience truly lit a spark within me. Witnessing the children’s warm smiles and their mother’s heartfelt gratitude for the assistance provided deeply moved me. My desire was fueled to continue helping and making a positive difference in their lives for even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact. However, because of my involvement and hands-on experience, I have decided to continue helping organizations in assisting women and children of distressed families. I’m presently an 11th-grade student, and I have planned to establish an initiative to assist teenage girls and teen moms with care packages for themselves, hosting hot breakfast giveaways and a book drive. My mother often says a Bahamian proverb, “He who feels it knows it,” but I never understood what she meant, until now. This proverb expresses how only one who has experienced something in their lives whether good or bad knows how to relate. Therefore, my professional career goal is to become a Family attorney within the United States and the Bahamas. This career choice was birthed due to the absence of my father, because of his absence I channeled my feeling of abandonment into something positive. Hence, allowing me to see life differently through the eyes of children who may be in a similar situation like me. Throughout my childhood, I often saw many children who experienced numerous forms of abuse and neglect, but adults often forget kids are innocent and shouldn’t be mistreated because of their mistakes. A future life goal for myself is to become a major contributor to distressed families because I’m going to create a non-profit organization to aid mothers like my own who are struggling to keep their heads above water. Within this organization, I will implement a system that helps women, especially single mothers to care for their children. I will collaborate with lawyers in the same field to offer advice when it comes to court cases and other legal matters. By establishing this system, I will empower women to continue fulfilling their crucial roles while providing the necessary support to overcome their unique challenges. I will establish a mentoring relationship connecting women with a law degree or background to assist as mentors. Additionally, I will initiate a scholarship in the future that helps children have an opportunity to make a difference in their lives. By investing in the next generation, I hope to cultivate leaders who will continue to advocate for women’s empowerment and contribute to positive societal change. My chosen career path I have selected for myself is to enroll in the undergraduate history program at the University of Minnesota. Following taking and passing the LSAT examination and applying for Suffolk University Law School. Within 3 years I’ll earn a Juris Doctor Law degree and successfully pass the multistate professional responsibility examination. I will then qualify to write/pass the bar examination in my state. Finally, I’ll be officially sworn in as a Family attorney. Within 7 years I will complete Law school and I will be entering the law field as a Family attorney ready to fight for families in need of help being their voice of hope. I am confident that once I keep my eyes on my goals this will sharpen my personal development as an individual resulting in me taking steps towards great victories and success.

“Sorry, she will not be able to travel without her American passport,” were the words that echoed in my ear as an excited 6-year-old, wanting to experience a cruise for the first time. This stagnated me for years due to my inability to travel to the USA since my father needed to sign several documents on my behalf. My idea of an ideal father figure slowly dwindled because I felt abandoned and unloved. My saving grace has always been my mother who was there to pick up the slack and make me her number-one priority. As a result of feeling abandoned and neglected by the person I held in high regard, I was propelled at a very tender age to pursue a career as a family attorney. Coupling with my passion for helping others and my volunteerism spirit, further sparked my interest and desire to pursue this career.
