As a young girl I felt I needed to help others. I knew that when I grew up, I would focus on helping people who are different and are treated differently by society. That's when I realized that the people who I needed to help were people who looked like me and struggled with being in a new place and didn’t know the English language; people who, because of their skin color, don't get treated the same as people who have a different skin color.
A moment when I realized this was when I saw people who looked like me being called bad things. They were called things that weren’t true. I knew this because I looked just the way they did, and I knew I wasn’t a bad person who did the horrible things that they were being called. Seeing people of color being mistreated is what prompted my interest in politics. However, I knew I wanted to bring change in the politics that we have today. That's when I started to look at the different types of law. I researched and saw what each branch of law does, and that's when I found the study of constitutional law. I knew that this would be a perfect way of helping minorities be seen in our political world. As I started to learn about more situations that people who were minorities went through on a daily basis, it made me more interested and motivated to help these people.
Seeing how I was looked down upon by others who looked different than me made me want to fight for change. Seeing how at my job I got weird looks from coworkers for speaking my language and for helping a customer who didn’t speak English made me want to act. I even heard comments like, “It’s not my job to help those kinds of people,” or “If they can’t speak the language, they shouldn’t be in this shop”. Hearing these types of comments made me want to explode and right these wrongs. However, I knew I had to compose myself and stay professional for the moment.
But that didn’t mean I didn’t stand up in these situations. I would always let my coworkers know that my job is to help others no matter if they spoke the English language or a different language. I know this desire I have to help others is something that I will carry with me throughout my journey in college and my future career in law. This interest for justice and equality is something I will carry with me. Justice to me looks like helping others who are shunned by our society. It also means helping those who have less resources who may not be able to afford justice. My motives are not money driven, they are justice driven. Creating a safe environment for all people, regardless of who they are or where they’re from, is my motivation to continue my education.
