HeySunday Scholarship for Moms in College
As a first-generation college student, with parents who emigrated from Mexico without a formal college education, I have a deep appreciation for the opportunities that education can provide. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my parents made to ensure I had a better life. Their unwavering support and encouragement instilled in me a strong work ethic and a relentless pursuit of knowledge.
Balancing motherhood and a demanding career has been a significant challenge. However, my desire to make a positive impact on the world has driven me to pursue higher education. I am passionate about nursing and believe that it aligns perfectly with my aspirations to help others and achieve financial stability.
My corporate career provided me with valuable experience, but it lacked the deep sense of fulfillment I sought. Nursing offers me the opportunity to directly care for patients, alleviate suffering, and contribute to the well-being of others.
As a single mother, I understand the challenges and sacrifices involved in balancing family and career. My personal experiences have instilled in me empathy, compassion, and a strong work ethic. I am committed to providing exceptional care to my patients, while also serving as a role model for my children.
One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced was the recent transition from my role as Operations Manager. After providing a six-month notice, I was committed to ensuring a smooth handover and the hiring of a qualified replacement. Unfortunately, the company’s owner requested a much shorter notice period, leaving me in a challenging position. Despite the circumstances, I remained focused on my long-term goals and the opportunity to make a positive impact as a nurse.
Balancing Roles and Overcoming Obstacles
Managing the roles of a student and a mother requires careful planning and effective time management. I've established a daily routine that allows me to balance my academic responsibilities with my family commitments. I prioritize my studies during specific times of the day, ensuring that I dedicate quality time to my children as well.
I've also sought support from my family and friends, who have been instrumental in helping me manage childcare and household responsibilities. Additionally, I've utilized campus resources, such as tutoring services and counseling centers, to help me stay on track and alleviate stress.
One of the most significant challenges I've faced as a student has been overcoming feelings of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. As a first-generation college student, I often question my abilities and worry about whether I belong in a higher education setting. However, I've learned to cultivate a growth mindset and to embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.
I've also had to adapt to the demands of online learning, which has presented its own set of challenges. From managing technical difficulties to staying motivated in a virtual environment, I've had to develop new strategies to succeed.
Despite these obstacles, I am determined to persevere and achieve my academic goals. With the support of my loved ones and the resources available to me, I am confident in my ability to succeed in my academic pursuits and future career as a nurse. I am eager to contribute to the healthcare field and make a difference in the lives of others. As I embark on this new chapter, I am filled with hope and determination.

I faced my own personal struggles with mental health. These experiences have profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations.
As an adult, I continue to engage in therapy and self-help practices to support my mental health. Through these experiences, I have come to understand the importance of embracing my shadow, acknowledging and accepting the darker aspects of my personality. I have learned to love every part of myself, including my imperfections and vulnerabilities.
One particularly powerful exercise I recently completed involved imagining my nine-year-old self, who was ready to take her own life after being grounded. While I could not recall the specific reasons for the grounding, I vividly remembered lying on the floor, crying uncontrollably, and feeling completely alone and unloved.
In this exercise, I pictured my adult self taking that young girl in her arms and offering words of comfort and reassurance. I imagined telling her, "I care how you feel. I miss you. I want you around. I see you, I see your quirks and bad actions, and I still love you. You are not a bad little girl; you simply want attention, good or bad. But that doesn't define you."
This exercise was incredibly powerful for me, as it allowed me to connect with my younger self and offer the love and support she desperately needed. It has taken me a lot of work to heal from the wounds of my childhood and the challenges of my divorce.
My experiences with mental health have profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. I have learned the importance of self-care, seeking support, and advocating for mental health awareness. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to learn and grow from my experiences and am committed to using my knowledge and skills to help others who are facing similar challenges.
My decision to pursue a career in nursing is driven by a desire to make a positive impact. I have always been drawn to professions that allow me to help others and contribute to my community. Nursing offers a unique opportunity to combine my passion for helping people with my desire for continuous learning and personal growth.
Throughout my life, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. My experiences volunteering at homeless shelters in San Antonio have solidified my belief in the power of human connection and the importance of compassionate care. Nursing allows me to directly address the needs of individuals and make a tangible difference in their lives.
Beyond my personal experiences, I am also motivated by the opportunity to achieve financial security for myself and my family. As a single mother of three boys, I understand the importance of providing a stable and supportive environment for my children. A nursing career offers the potential for both personal and professional fulfillment, as well as financial stability.
My journey toward becoming a nurse has not been without its challenges. Despite the initial resistance from my employer and the financial sacrifices involved, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of my goals.
During my nursing studies, I have had the opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience and develop essential nursing skills. I have worked in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities.

Healing Self and Community Scholarship
My decision to pursue a nursing career is driven by a deep-seated desire to make a positive impact on the world, particularly in the realm of mental health care. I believe that everyone deserves access to affordable and accessible mental health support, regardless of their socioeconomic status.
One of my goals is to establish a free clinic that provides mental health services to individuals who are unable to afford traditional treatment. This clinic would offer a safe and welcoming space where people can seek help without worrying about the financial burden. I envision a clinic that provides a range of services, including therapy, medication management, and support groups.
In addition to opening a free clinic, I would also like to volunteer my time to provide mental health support to individuals in need. This could involve working with organizations that serve marginalized populations, such as homeless individuals, veterans, or survivors of trauma. I believe that everyone deserves access to compassionate and supportive care, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Furthermore, I am committed to advocating for policies that promote mental health awareness and access to affordable treatment. This could involve working with policymakers, healthcare organizations, and community leaders to raise awareness about mental health issues and advocate for increased funding for mental health services.
By combining my clinical expertise with my passion for social justice, I hope to make a significant contribution to improving the accessibility and affordability of mental health care.

One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" that deeply resonates with me, even as a 35-year-old single mother, is "I used to think I was invincible, now I'm just so sensitive." This line perfectly captures the disillusionment and vulnerability that can accompany major life transitions, regardless of age. While I may no longer be a teenager, I can still relate to the feelings of uncertainty, self-doubt, and emotional sensitivity that this lyric evokes.
As I went through my divorce, I experienced a profound sense of loss and upheaval. It felt like my entire world had been turned upside down, and I was unsure of how to navigate this new chapter of my life. During this time, I found solace in music, and Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" became a powerful soundtrack to my journey.
The lyric "I used to think I was invincible, now I'm just so sensitive" resonated with me on a deep level. It reminded me of the confidence and optimism I had as a teenager, believing that I could overcome any challenge. However, as I faced the challenges of divorce and single motherhood, I realized that life is not always as straightforward or predictable as I had once thought.
The line "now I'm just so sensitive" also speaks to the heightened emotional sensitivity that can accompany major life transitions. Divorce is a complex and emotionally draining process, and it's natural to feel more vulnerable and sensitive during this time. This lyric has helped me understand and validate my own emotions, and it has reminded me that it's okay to feel overwhelmed or vulnerable.
In addition to its emotional resonance, this lyric has also inspired me to embrace my vulnerability and use it as a source of strength. By acknowledging my own limitations and sensitivities, I have been able to develop greater self-awareness and compassion for myself and others.
Overall, "I used to think I was invincible, now I'm just so sensitive" is a powerful lyric that continues to resonate with me, even as an adult. The demands of balancing work, parenting, and personal responsibilities can be overwhelming, but I've come to realize that my mental health is essential to my ability to navigate these obstacles and provide a nurturing environment for my children.
My journey began with a difficult divorce, a decision I made to ensure a better future for my boys. Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Kindness, a small act that can create a ripple effect of positive change, has always been a guiding principle in my life. One instance that stands out to me occurred during my senior year of high school. Our school was hosting a canned food drive to benefit a local food bank, and I was determined to make a significant contribution.
I enlisted the help of my friends and family, organizing a neighborhood food drive. We went door-to-door, explaining the cause and collecting donations. To make it more engaging, we offered incentives like homemade baked goods or a chance to win a small prize. The response was overwhelming. Neighbors, friends, and even strangers donated bags of canned goods, non-perishable items, and even monetary contributions.
The impact of our efforts was profound. The food bank was able to provide meals for countless families in need, and our school community felt a sense of unity and purpose. Witnessing the gratitude in the eyes of those who received our donations was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced the belief that even small acts of kindness can have a significant impact on the lives of others.
Beyond the immediate benefits, this experience also had a lasting impact on me. It taught me the importance of giving back to my community and the power of collective action. It inspired me to continue seeking opportunities to make a positive difference in the world.
This experience has shaped my values and aspirations. It has reinforced my belief in the interconnectedness of humanity and the importance of compassion and empathy. I am committed to carrying forward this spirit of kindness and using my skills and abilities to make a positive impact on my community and beyond.

A Journey of Language and Growth
As a first-generation American whose first language is Spanish, I have experienced both the challenges and benefits of being bilingual. Growing up in a predominantly English-speaking environment, I began learning English in third grade. This transition was a significant hurdle, as I struggled to balance my native language with the new one. Even now, as a college student, I encounter unfamiliar words and phrases that require additional research.
Despite these challenges, being bilingual has enriched my life in countless ways. It has allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for different perspectives. Additionally, bilingualism has enhanced my cognitive abilities, improving my problem-solving skills and memory. Studies have shown that bilingual individuals often have stronger executive functions, such as multitasking and decision-making.
My plans post-graduation involve pursuing a career in healthcare, specifically in nursing. I believe that my bilingual skills will be invaluable in providing care to patients from diverse linguistic backgrounds. By being able to communicate effectively in both English and Spanish, I can establish trust and rapport with patients, ensuring that they receive the best possible care.
One of the most significant challenges I have faced as a bilingual individual is the pressure to conform to monolingual expectations. In some environments, I have felt the need to downplay my bilingualism or even hide my native language. However, I have come to recognize the importance of embracing my linguistic identity and celebrating the diversity of my background.
My love for reading has played a crucial role in my development as a bilingual individual. By immersing myself in English-language books and literature, I was able to expand my vocabulary and improve my comprehension. Additionally, reading has helped me to understand the nuances of the English language and to appreciate the beauty and power of words.
One of my favorite childhood books was "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. This colorful and whimsical story introduced me to new vocabulary words and helped me to develop a love for reading. As I grew older, I discovered a passion for young adult literature. Books like "The Hunger Games" and "Harry Potter" not only entertained me but also challenged me to think critically and analyze complex themes.
Through my reading experiences, I have learned the importance of perseverance and the power of imagination. I have also discovered the joy of exploring new worlds and perspectives. My love for books has helped me to develop a lifelong passion for learning and has prepared me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

My journey towards higher education has been profoundly influenced by the books I have read. Two works in particular, "Atomic Habits" by James Clear and "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman, have significantly shaped my goals and outlook on life.
"Atomic Habits" introduced me to the concept of incremental change and the power of small, consistent actions. Clear's insights have inspired me to approach my academic pursuits with a focus on gradual progress and sustainable habits. By breaking down my goals into smaller, manageable steps, I have been able to stay motivated and avoid burnout.
"Thinking, Fast and Slow" has provided me with a deeper understanding of cognitive biases and decision-making processes. Kahneman's work has helped me to recognize the limitations of intuition and the importance of critical thinking. This knowledge has empowered me to approach challenges with a more analytical and deliberate mindset.
Through my reading of these books, I have come to realize my own potential and the importance of self-improvement. I have learned that success is not solely determined by talent or intelligence, but rather by the habits and mindset that we cultivate. By applying the principles I have learned from these books, I am confident in my ability to overcome challenges and achieve my goals.
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned from these books is the importance of perseverance. Both "Atomic Habits" and "Thinking, Fast and Slow" emphasize the role of consistency and resilience in achieving long-term success. By understanding the challenges that may arise along the way, I have been able to develop a more patient and persistent approach to my goals.
Furthermore, these books have helped me to cultivate a growth mindset. By recognizing that my abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication, I have become more open to learning and adapting to new challenges. This growth mindset has been essential in helping me overcome setbacks and stay focused on my goals.
In conclusion, my reading of "Atomic Habits" and "Thinking, Fast and Slow" has had a profound impact on my personal and academic development. These books have provided me with valuable insights into habit formation, critical thinking, and self-improvement. By applying the principles I have learned, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals and make a positive impact on the world. Thank you for the time and consideration. Additionally, I have learned the importance of empathy and compassion, recognizing that everyone faces their own unique challenges.
My experiences with socioeconomic adversity have also shaped my beliefs about the world. I have witnessed the systemic inequalities that exist in our society and the ways in which these inequalities can perpetuate cycles of poverty. This has fueled my desire to become a nurse and contribute to addressing these issues.
As a single parent, I am dedicated to raising good men. I believe that it is essential to provide my sons with positive role models and to teach them the importance of empathy, respect, and responsibility. By setting a strong example and fostering a supportive environment, I hope to equip my children with the tools they need to succeed in life.
I believe that I can make a positive impact in my community and school by using my own experiences to connect with others who are facing similar challenges. I plan to volunteer my time to help organizations that serve low-income and marginalized populations. Additionally, I will advocate for policies that promote social justice and equality.
My experiences with socioeconomic adversity have not defined me but have rather shaped me into the person I am today. I am grateful for the challenges I have faced, as they have instilled in me a strong sense of resilience, empathy, and determination. I am committed to using my experiences to make a positive impact on my community and to create a more equitable and just society.

My upbringing in San Antonio, Texas, has shaped my beliefs, influenced my relationships, and fueled my determination to make a positive impact on the world.
Socioeconomic adversity has been a constant presence in my life. Growing up in a family with limited resources, I have faced financial hardships and obstacles that many of my peers have not. A Journey of Resilience: From Teen Mother to Nursing Student
My journey as a teen mother has undoubtedly shaped the course of my life, influencing both my educational aspirations and my future goals. Becoming pregnant at the tender age of eighteen was a significant life event that presented numerous challenges, but it also ignited a determination within me to create a better future for myself and my son.
The decision to relocate to San Antonio in 2010 was a pivotal moment in my life. I believed that this city would provide a more supportive environment for raising my son, Dominic. The move, while daunting, also offered me an opportunity to start fresh and pursue new opportunities. With a single-minded focus on providing a stable and loving home for my son, I embarked on a path of personal and professional growth. I packed anything that would fit in my Dodge neon, my son and moved into a one bedroom apartment. I had the essentials but it was more than enough to provide a loving home for my son.
My educational journey, though initially delayed by motherhood, was not derailed. I was inspired by the nurses I encountered, whose passion for their profession and their ability to combine their work with travel resonated deeply with me. Their enthusiasm and dedication fueled my desire to pursue a career in nursing. I saw nursing as a way to make a positive impact on people's lives, while also satisfying my wanderlust.
To achieve my goal of becoming a nurse, I knew I had to overcome significant obstacles. I dedicated myself to my studies, balancing the demands of motherhood with academic rigor. I am particularly proud of achieving a 94.7% on the TeAS exam, a testament to my hard work and determination. By diligently completing my basic and prerequisite courses, I positioned myself to choose the nursing school that best aligned with my academic and personal goals.
My experience as a teen mother has instilled in me a strong sense of resilience and perseverance. It has taught me the importance of setting goals, overcoming challenges, and never giving up on my dreams. While my journey has not been without its hardships, I am grateful for the opportunities it has afforded me. I am excited to embark on my nursing career, knowing that I am not only pursuing a fulfilling profession but also honoring the sacrifices I have made along the way.
Jessica's Journey Brain Tumor Survivor Scholarship
I personally do not have a brain tumor. My cousin who was 7 had one. It was diagnosed too late and the tumor claimed her life. I am in school to become a nurse and based on the experience she had and the way the nursed cared for my aunt and a uncle I took an interest in neurology. I know the impact healthcare and early detection can have on the early detection and treatment. Seeing my other cousins at the hospital was devastating. I know being a healthcare worker will place me in a position to help family members through this. My friend is a neuro surgeon and hearing his stories on little ones go through recovery and the family members has touched my heart to pay close attention to the signs and not bush things off as a simple headache. I am in the process of starting nursing school. I start in the Fall 2024. Come January 2025 we will be doing clinicals which involve pediatrics and operating rooms. My goal is to be one of the best in the field staying up to date with all new research. Currently money has been slow and I hope to sell my home to help funds the next two years in school so I can solely focus on learning everything a nurse needs to be successful. I have three kids who motivate me to get good grades and set an example for them. Once I graduate and pass my NCLEX test and become an RN I want to continue with school and become a Nurse Practitioner. Here is a little background information on me. . I am in the pursue of happiness and purpose. My life was a whirlwind before my divorce. I had a high-paying job, a beautiful home, and a family that I thought was perfect. But then everything fell apart. I was left feeling lost and alone, trying to figure out what to do with my life.
I started searching for something that would give me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. I wanted to make a difference in the world, to help others. But I wasn't sure how to do that. I started doing all the things that I wish I had done during my marriage but didn’t. I went back to the gym, started loving myself and my kiddoes more. I participated in a tough Mudder even that left my body craving more adventure and significance.
Then, I was involved in a car accident that nearly took my life. I spent two weeks in the ICU, my lungs punctured and my family distraught. I watched as the nurses worked tirelessly to save my life. They were not only caring for me, but also for my family members. They were my advocates, my support system.
I realized that I wanted to be like them. I wanted to help others, to make a difference in their lives. So, I quit my high-paying job and enrolled in nursing school.
It wasn't easy. I had to work hard to complete my pre-requisites and pass the TEAS exam. But I was determined. I knew that this was what I wanted to do.
And I did it. I passed the TEAS with a 94.7% and I am scheduled to start nursing school in the Fall of 2024.
I am excited to serve the San Antonio area and provide excellent care for my patients. I want to be the kind of nurse who makes a difference in people's lives, just like the nurses who helped me and my family.
Thank you

I started doing all the things that I wish I had done during my marriage but didn’t. I went back to the gym, started loving myself and my kiddoes more. I started writing as a way to get my thoughts in order. I had this idea to write a book on healing and heartbreak. I found so many books on the topic but none that specifically connected the process to patterns and healing our inner child. Stopping the cycles that past traumas bring us to. I started writing and as a ways to learn new ways to challenge myself I started this path of learning and doing scary things. I participated in a tough Mudder even that left my body craving more adventure and significance.

LeBron James Fan Scholarship
To be honest I became a LeBron James fan when he went to the Lakers. I have been a Lakers fan since i was in high school. When he first came to the Lakers there was a little rough patch. I noticed a lot of the players looked up to him and kept passing the ball to him instead of taking the shots they obviously could make. I became a fan not just because of his talent, but mainly because I saw the team he built around himself. A one player game can win games but Lebron took it further he stepped up and became a leader and encouraged other players to be their best. In one of the games I saw one of the players pass the ball to him and LeBron made this face of you got that shot take it and passed it back.. WOW I was in love! Now seeing the synkinesis the team has and they throw these random shots and they just communicate almost telepathically is incredible. I had the opportunity to see them at an LA home game in Nov 2022 and again in HOU in 2023 and several times here in my home city in San Antonio TX. Being a Lakers fan is not easy in San Antonio haha wearing my LeBron James Jersey to the games can increase the tension lol but even people from other teams understand he is a legend.. so when LeBron James came to the Lakers being a fan became easier :)

I know that this career is full of ups and downs and a-lot of hard work but it's my way of contributing to my community. I know some students work during the time they attend school and I hope to find that work balance as well with out jeopardizing my study time. I have come to terms with putting friendships on hold as i focus on school and learning all the skills I can to be an excellent nurse.
