I’m Alexander Wong, a U.S. Navy veteran turned kinesiology student with a mission: to help others recover, rebuild, and rise. After suffering a debilitating nerve injury during my military service, I faced one of the toughest battles of my life—regaining the use of my arm. What seemed like a setback became the spark that ignited my passion for physical therapy and movement science.
Today, I study kinesiology with a focus on injury rehabilitation, human performance, and the power of movement. My goal is to become a physical therapist who not only treats injuries, but restores confidence, strength, and hope. I bring military discipline, personal resilience, and a deep sense of purpose to everything I do—both in the classroom and in life.
I know what it feels like to be on the edge of giving up. And now, I’m here to make sure others don’t.

Here's my story.
Back in 2019, while I was serving in the military, I suffered a nerve injury during training. At first, I thought it was minor and didn’t think much of it. But the next day, I realized I couldn’t move my arm at all. I rushed to the doctor, and they told me it was probably just a strained muscle that would heal within a week or two. They sent me home with painkillers, and I waited.
Two weeks passed, and I still couldn’t move my arm properly. I was in constant pain, 24/7. I went back to the doctor, but they told me to wait another two weeks. As more time went by, it became clear that my arm wasn’t healing. I began to fear that I might never recover. That’s when I decided to try a different approach—something beyond just medication. That decision led me to meet my physical therapist.
At first, I had low expectations. It had already been nearly two months since I lost movement in my arm, and I was on the verge of giving up on my dream of pursuing sports and bodybuilding. But my physical therapist changed everything. He supported me not just physically, but mentally as well. He reassured me that I would recover and guided me through exercises to help me heal. He was persistent—if one exercise didn’t work, he would try another, and then another. He was passionate, caring, and determined to see me recover.
It took a long time, but after six months, he finally diagnosed the root of my injury and designed specific exercises to target it. Slowly but surely, I began regaining strength and mobility. I followed every routine he gave me, and after a year, I was finally able to move my arm again—about 90% recovered.
This experience is what inspired me to pursue a career in physical therapy. I want to give others the same hope that was given to me. Even when recovery seems impossible, I want to be the person who helps others believe it's still possible. Just like my physical therapist guided and inspired me, I want to be that guiding light for others.
Receiving the Dr. Monique Dupree Scholarship would help me continue pursuing this goal. It would allow me to focus more on my education and training, so I can one day make a difference in the lives of others just like my physical therapist made in mine. I’m committed to using my experience and knowledge to help others heal, grow stronger, and believe in the power of recovery.
