I’m someone who believes that growth is a lifelong journey—one fueled by curiosity, reflection, and the willingness to evolve. Whether it's through books, experiences, or tough lessons, I’m always striving to become a better version of myself—not just for me, but for the people I love, especially my daughter.
Being her parent is the most important and meaningful role I’ll ever have. My goal is to raise her to be not just strong and confident, but also deeply kind. I want her to know that strength and compassion aren’t opposites—they go hand in hand. Watching her grow and discover who she is inspires me daily to lead by example.
Travel is another big part of who I am. I love exploring new places and perspectives, whether it’s a quiet mountain town or a bustling city halfway around the world. It keeps me grounded and reminds me how beautifully diverse and connected our world really is.
In all things, I try to live with intention, stay curious, and embrace the challenges that push me forward.

Ambition, Drive, and Impact: My Mission for Justice Through Law
Ambition, to me, is more than aspiration—it's a commitment to create change where it is most needed. My ambition to pursue law is rooted in a lifelong awareness of the deep inequalities in our criminal justice system. It is a goal shaped by personal experience, moral conviction, and an unwavering drive to make an impact that reaches beyond myself. As a future attorney, I am committed to becoming a force for reform in a system that too often fails the most vulnerable.
The criminal justice system, in its current form, disproportionately affects people of color, the poor, and the marginalized. I have seen people close to me experience the consequences of inadequate legal representation, racial bias, and systemic failure. These were not isolated incidents—they were reflections of broader patterns of injustice. These experiences didn’t deter me; they propelled me. I realized early on that if I wanted to change the system, I had to understand it from the inside. That’s why I chose law.
I plan to use my law degree to focus on criminal defense and policy reform. I want to provide high-quality legal advocacy for those who have been underserved, while also pushing for changes to laws and practices that contribute to mass incarceration, unfair sentencing, and the criminalization of poverty. My goal is not just to win cases, but to help shift the system toward one that prioritizes rehabilitation, equity, and humanity.
This mission is more than academic. I live it every day. My 40-year-old partner has been battling end-stage renal failure for the past five years. At the same time, we are raising our three-year-old daughter, Cameron—an unexpected blessing who has become the light and strength of our lives. Balancing caregiving, parenting, and pursuing my education has taught me the true meaning of discipline, sacrifice, and resilience. It has also deepened my compassion for others fighting their own silent battles in a system that rarely gives second chances.
My Catholic faith plays a central role in my drive to pursue justice. I believe every person, regardless of their past, is worthy of dignity and redemption. The teachings of mercy, service, and justice that I’ve grown up with continue to inspire me to advocate for those whose voices are too often silenced. I see the law as a powerful tool not just for enforcement, but for healing and restoration—values that are urgently needed in today’s justice system.
This scholarship would not only support my legal education but also empower my mission. With your help, I will be able to devote my full attention to becoming the type of lawyer who does more than practice law—I will use it as a platform to amplify the unheard, challenge the unjust, and rebuild trust in our legal institutions. I am not pursuing law for prestige or personal gain. I am pursuing it because I believe I can make a real difference—for my family, for those caught in the system, and for communities across the country who deserve better.
Ambition gave me the vision. Drive keeps me going through every challenge. And impact is what I intend to leave behind. With the support of this scholarship, I will become a lawyer who not only knows the law but uses it to build a more just and compassionate world.

Living Out Faith Through Advocacy, Family, and Education
As a practicing Catholic, my faith is not just a belief system; it is the guiding principle that shapes every decision, every action, and every goal I pursue. Living out my faith, especially in support of the Pro-Life movement, is deeply embedded in my daily life. It is reflected not only in my convictions but also in the life I lead with my family and the path I’ve chosen for my future.
One of the most profound ways I’ve lived out my faith has been in walking beside my partner, who has been in end-stage renal failure for the past five years. At just 40 years old, his condition has challenged us in ways we never anticipated—physically, emotionally, and financially. Yet, despite the weight of uncertainty, our Catholic faith has anchored us in hope. We believe that every life, regardless of health status or ability, has inherent dignity and worth. Navigating this journey has only deepened my commitment to the sanctity of life at all stages—from the sick and elderly to the unborn.
Our daughter, Cameron, was an unexpected blessing who entered our lives three years ago. Her arrival changed everything. At a time when we were already burdened with medical challenges, God gifted us with a new reason to fight, to hope, and to believe in the beauty of life. Raising her has reinforced my belief that every life has a divine purpose, regardless of how or when it begins. She has become the living embodiment of grace, reminding me daily of God's plan and the sacredness of family.
My commitment to the Pro-Life cause is not limited to personal experiences; it’s a cornerstone of my educational and career aspirations. I have chosen to pursue a career in law because I believe it is one of the most powerful tools for change. Through the legal system, I hope to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves—the unborn, the disabled, the terminally ill, and the marginalized. My goal is not just to defend life in courtrooms, but to influence policy and promote a culture where life at all stages is protected and valued.
The Catholic Church teaches that we are called to be voices for the voiceless and defenders of human dignity. This calling fuels my determination to succeed in law school, even when the road gets hard. Balancing rigorous academics, supporting my partner through his illness, and raising our daughter has not been easy. But my faith constantly reminds me that God equips those He calls. I view these challenges not as obstacles but as opportunities to grow stronger, more compassionate, and more committed to my mission.
With my education, I plan to work in areas such as constitutional law, human rights, or health care advocacy—fields where I can make a real impact in protecting life. I want to be part of crafting laws and shaping conversations that uphold the value of every person, from conception to natural death. My lived experience gives me a unique perspective and sense of urgency. I know what it means to fight for life daily, not just in theory but in practice.
Faith, family, and purpose are the pillars of my life. I carry them into every classroom, every conversation, and every future courtroom. And as I continue this journey through law school and beyond, I am driven by the unwavering belief that with God’s guidance, I can help build a world where every life is honored—and where love, justice, and mercy prevail.
Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
The Impact of Caregiving on My Life and Future
Caregiving, for me, is not just a responsibility—it’s an act of love and commitment that has defined my daily life, my growth as a person, and my future goals. For the past several years, I have been the primary caregiver for my long-term partner of ten years, who is also the father of our three-year-old daughter. He is living with end-stage renal failure, and his condition requires constant care, support, and emotional presence. Watching someone you love fight for their health while trying to maintain some normalcy for your child is one of the most difficult things I’ve ever experienced, but it has also been one of the most transformative.
When my partner was first diagnosed, we were devastated. Our lives quickly changed as we adapted to the world of dialysis, medication schedules, dietary restrictions, and ongoing medical appointments. For one year, he underwent dialysis at home, which required extensive training and preparation. I took on the responsibility of learning how to operate and maintain the dialysis equipment, keep a sterile environment, monitor his vital signs, and be ready in case something went wrong during the procedure. It was overwhelming at times—especially with a toddler in the house—but I did it because I love him and because our family depends on one another.
Now that he receives in-clinic dialysis, my role has shifted, but the demands haven’t lessened. I coordinate transportation, help manage his exhaustion after treatments, keep track of medications and lab results, and provide the emotional support he needs to get through this difficult chapter. At the same time, I care for our daughter—juggling daycare drop-offs, meals, bedtime routines, and everything in between. It’s a constant balancing act, and there are moments when it feels like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. But despite the challenges, I remain steadfast and hopeful, because I know I’m doing everything I can to keep our family strong.
This caregiving journey has fundamentally shaped who I am. It’s taught me what resilience really looks like—not in a big, dramatic sense, but in the quiet, everyday choices to keep showing up. It has deepened my empathy and given me a clearer understanding of what people living with chronic illness go through—not just physically, but emotionally and financially. It's also made me fiercely motivated to build a future where I can advocate not only for my family but also for others who may not have a voice.
That is what led me to the California Law Study Program. Through my caregiving experience, I’ve witnessed firsthand how complicated and overwhelming the legal system can be—especially when dealing with insurance, medical rights, disability accommodations, and other aspects of care. I want to become someone who can help others navigate those systems. My goal is to become an attorney who advocates for marginalized individuals and families—especially those dealing with health-related, financial, or family law issues. My caregiving experience has opened my eyes to the gaps in support for people facing these challenges, and I want to be part of changing that.
Receiving this scholarship would mean the world to me. It would ease the financial burden on my family, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and future goals. Right now, every dollar counts—between my partner’s medical expenses, daily living costs, and child care, pursuing my education feels like climbing a mountain. But this scholarship would be a step forward, a chance to invest in a better future for all three of us.
More than anything, it would be a recognition of the invisible work I do every day. Caregiving isn’t always glamorous or acknowledged, but it’s powerful. It builds strength, character, and empathy. With your support, I can turn this experience into something bigger—not just for myself, but for every person and family I’ll one day help.
In closing, caregiving has redefined my life. It’s shown me what love in action truly looks like, and it’s inspired me to keep pushing forward, no matter how hard the road gets. This scholarship wouldn’t just help me attend school—it would help me carry forward everything I’ve learned as a caregiver into a meaningful legal career, where I can use my voice to support others who need it most.

Inspired by Cameron: A Journey Through Education, Career, and Motherhood
Becoming a mother changed my life in ways I never could have imagined. My daughter, Cameron, who will turn three this June, has been the biggest source of inspiration in my decision to continue my higher education. She’s not just my heart—she’s my why. Every step I take in my professional and academic journey is fueled by the desire to show her what it means to be strong, determined, and self-supporting. I want her to grow up knowing that success comes through perseverance, sacrifice, and belief in oneself.
Balancing motherhood with my roles as a student and an employee has not been easy. I’m a licensed court reporter, a licensed real estate agent, and a certified paralegal, and currently, I’m pursuing my law degree through the Law Study Program with the State Bar of California. Each of these roles requires immense dedication, and adding law school into the mix has pushed me to new levels of discipline and time management. It’s not uncommon for me to study late into the night after Cameron has gone to sleep or to review case law while she naps beside me on the couch. The sacrifices are real—less time for bedtime stories, fewer weekends off with my family, missed milestones—but I remind myself constantly that this is all for her future.
There are days when the guilt creeps in—when I have to choose studying for a midterm over taking Cameron to the park, or when I miss family dinners to meet a deadline. But I also know that Cameron is watching me. She may not understand now, but one day she’ll see that her mother pursued her dreams with relentless passion—not just for herself, but for the example she wanted to set. I want her to know that it’s okay to chase your ambitions, even when the road is long and difficult. I want her to see that being a woman and a mother does not limit one’s ability to succeed—it amplifies it.
Being in law school while juggling work and parenthood has taught me the value of time, resilience, and support. I’ve had to lean on my loved ones and ask for help more than I ever thought I would. But I’ve also learned that I am stronger than I ever believed. Cameron has brought out the best in me by simply being herself—curious, full of life, and always looking up at me with wide eyes that say, “Mommy, you can do anything.”
So, I keep going. I study, I work, I mother, and I dream—not just for myself, but for Cameron. My goal is to show her that with hard work, heart, and the courage to keep showing up, she can be anything she wants to be. And one day, when she looks back on this journey, I hope she sees not just the sacrifices, but the love and the unwavering belief I had in both her and myself.

Margot Pickering Aspiring Attorney Scholarship
I’ll never forget the night my best friend called me, her voice shaking as she whispered, “He said if I leave, I’ll never see my son again.” She was trapped in an abusive relationship and terrified of him, of the court system, of losing her child. She didn’t need sympathy, she needed someone who could stand beside her in court, help her file for protection, and fight for custody. That moment didn’t just wake something up in me, it gave my ambition a name: I want to be that someone.
My name is Alexa Mahl, and I am pursuing my law degree through the State Bar’s Law Office Study Program. This non-traditional path requires tremendous focus, discipline, and drive, but I chose it intentionally. It allows me to gain real-world legal experience while continuing to work, study, and remain engaged with the very communities I want to serve.
I’m also a mother to a bright, curious three-year-old daughter who watches everything I do. I want her to grow up knowing that women can be strong, educated, and fearless—that we can rise even in the face of struggle, and that we fight not only for ourselves but for each other. I want to show her, through my actions, that we don’t wait for change—we become it. My journey in law is not just for me; it’s for her future, too.
I am following in the footsteps of my father, who passed away a couple years ago, but left behind a legacy of integrity, service, and justice. He was a lawyer who believed deeply in using the law to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves. Though he’s no longer here, I carry his mission forward in everything I do.
My goal is to specialize in criminal law or victim advocacy, with a focus on supporting women who have experienced violence, exploitation, or systemic neglect. I want to be the person they call when they feel most powerless—the one who listens, believes them, and helps them fight back using the law. Whether it’s pursuing restraining orders, advocating for safer sentencing, or helping survivors navigate the criminal justice system, I want to use my legal training to be both sword and shield for those who’ve been silenced.
This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of studying law through an alternative program, but it would help me stay the course on a journey that is as personal as it is professional. Every hour I dedicate to my studies, every case I assist on, and every step I take in this path brings me closer to building a career rooted in purpose and advocacy.
I don’t just want to become a lawyer, I want to be a force for change. I want to help women rewrite their stories, reclaim their power, and know that they are not alone. Through criminal law and victim advocacy, I will continue my father’s legacy and create one of my own—one case, one woman, one victory at a time.
