Throughout my childhood, I was mistreated by my peers and bullied for things out of my control because kids tend to reflect their pain towards others to cope. Thankfully, I have always been one to stick up for myself and those around me with no doubt. I learned quickly that most people did not react as I did, but were afraid or unable to stand up for themselves. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to make a positive impact in this world by helping others, especially young children, to build up the strength to live their lives to the fullest extent.
After much research, I discovered Occupational Therapy and decided that it would be a perfect fit for me and my personal goals. With this career, I would love to specialize in children with special needs, exhausting my body so that they could learn how to use theirs. Unfortunately, many people, especially those who are younger, tend to forget that being fully abled is a blessing that many are not granted. Understanding that gave me the drive to use my blessing to help the less fortunate.
Through my entire life, I have been a selfless, empathetic individual who could never sit there and watch others go through life alone. If I see someone sitting by themselves at school dances, I will be ecstatic to ask them to join me and my friends. If someone is sitting alone at lunch, there will always be an open spot for them next to me. This may be a result of being not only an older sister to my two sisters but also the oldest cousin of 12. Being a role model for so many has made me very cautious as to how I treat those around me because I believe one good example can truly change the world, one small step at a time.
With being an occupational therapist, of course, I will change lives through my work, but I won't just be my patients' OT I wish to be their friend. I want to be someone whom they feel they can come to and feel themselves around with no judgment, and see that there are good people still around. Even when the world seems to be such a negative place, I wish to be a glimpse of hope that there are still people in this world who believe there is always room for improvement and love will always conquer evil.
