      Jessie Koci Future Entrepreneurs Scholarship
I am currently attending the University of Nevada at Las Vegas in a Pre-Nursing course of study, aiming towards a future career in the healthcare industry. In making a career choice, I decided to become a nurse because of its fusion of scientific knowledge and problem-solving skills with a direct service component that combines intellectual stimulation and personal satisfaction. Healthcare practitioners hold a place of trusted authority at a time of utmost need in individuals' lives, and I am attracted to a profession where I can make an immediate positive difference in patients' lives. In addition, being a nurse requires adaptability, understanding, and self-discipline—characteristics I strive to develop through my educational pursuits. Parallel to achieving academic goals, I have mapped out an entrepreneurial career based on principles of independence, innovation, and resilience that can build something of value from scratch. Entrepreneurship allows me to take ownership of an idea or decision rather than being on a not preordained course. I am driven by the entrepreneurial endeavor that comes with spotting problems, finding solutions, and working on continuous improvement. Failure, rather than something I would like to avoid, is something I see as an essential part of learning and is necessary for entrepreneurial endeavors. I look forward to my success in my business ventures, having a disciplined, adaptable, and long-term oriented approach to achieve my objectives. This is because most people may have challenges when it comes to their business ventures, expecting success immediately or when their progress is constant. I am aware that success results from consistent behavior, patience, and constantly improving my performance over time. I seek constant feedback, research areas that I have less knowledge, and am willing to change my approach when faced with poor results. Another reason I see myself succeeding is in my willingness to balance ambition with responsibility. I do not embark on this journey of entrepreneurship as a means to attain fame or immediate success but rather to generate value and sustainability—not only within myself but for future generations as well. I realize that success has to be achieved through careful resource management within myself when it comes to my education pursuits as well as fulfillment of my entrepreneurship goals. As I see it, a successful life does not depend on income levels and job titles alone. While succeeding in these two aspects of life is of prime importance, there is a lot more that defines a successful life. For instance, the definition of a successful life includes leading a life with the ability to make significant decisions, maintaining quality relationships, and adding to personal improvement. It includes having the ability to analyze and realize that the impact of ones own efforts has been significant. Ultimately, my educational and entrepreneurial endeavors are a manifestation of my quest to merge concepts of service, independence, and purpose. Through the acquisition of professional knowledge and an entrepreneurial spirit, I hope to build a future that is not only a success as labeled by society but also a success from a holistic perspective.

One unique contribution I hope to give the world is making mental health care both affordable and accessible to everyone who needs support. Mental health is essential to overall well-being, yet far too many people face barriers—financial, social, or geographic—that prevent them from receiving care. My vision is to remove these barriers by combining technology, education, and community-based initiatives to create a system that is inclusive, proactive, and empowering. Technology can play a crucial role in this effort. Teletherapy platforms, mental health apps, and virtual support groups can reach people who live in rural areas, have mobility challenges, or cannot afford traditional therapy. By developing low-cost, user-friendly solutions, mental health support can become available to anyone, anywhere, without compromising quality. Education and awareness are equally important. Many people hesitate to seek help because of stigma or lack of knowledge about available resources. I hope to create community programs, school initiatives, and public campaigns that teach individuals to recognize signs of mental health challenges and feel empowered to seek support without shame. Finally, I aim to advocate for policies and partnerships that make care financially accessible. Collaborating with nonprofits, healthcare providers, and local governments can help subsidize treatment, integrate mental health into primary care, and provide free or low-cost counseling for underserved populations. Through these combined efforts, I hope to reshape how society views mental health—ensuring that no one is left behind due to cost, location, or stigma—and create a world where support is available to anyone who needs it.

I believe that nursing is more than just a profession—it is a calling to serve, advocate, and care for others in some of their most vulnerable moments. My goal as a future nurse is to positively impact the nursing profession by combining compassion, dedication, and a commitment to continuous learning to provide the highest quality care while uplifting the community of healthcare professionals around me. One way I hope to contribute is by bringing empathy and understanding to every patient interaction. I have always been deeply motivated by helping others, particularly individuals who face challenges that can make everyday life more difficult. In nursing, this means not only attending to physical needs but also recognizing the emotional and psychological aspects of care. By treating each patient as a whole person rather than a set of symptoms, I hope to foster trust, comfort, and dignity, which are essential for effective healing. In addition to patient care, I aim to positively influence the nursing profession through advocacy and education. I want to stay informed about best practices, evidence-based care, and emerging healthcare technologies, sharing knowledge with my colleagues to help improve patient outcomes. I also hope to mentor new nurses and support students entering the field, just as others have guided and inspired me. Nursing is a profession built on collaboration, and I believe that by fostering teamwork, empathy, and professionalism, I can contribute to a stronger, more united healthcare community. Finally, I hope to be a voice for positive change within the profession. This includes advocating for safe working conditions, continuing education opportunities, and a culture that prioritizes both patient care and caregiver well-being. I recognize that the demands of nursing can be intense, and I want to help create an environment where nurses feel supported, valued, and empowered to perform at their best. By combining compassion with leadership, I aim to contribute to a culture of excellence and sustainability in the profession. Ultimately, my goal is to make a lasting, positive impact by caring deeply for patients, supporting my colleagues, and striving for continuous improvement in every aspect of nursing. I hope that my dedication, empathy, and commitment to the values of the profession will leave a meaningful mark, not only on the individuals I serve but also on the broader nursing community.

From a young age, I have always felt a deep sense of compassion and responsibility toward helping others, particularly those who face challenges that many people might not fully understand. My inspiration to pursue a career supporting the intellectual disability community grew out of a combination of personal experiences and volunteer opportunities that opened my eyes to the resilience, courage, and unique perspectives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Early on, I volunteered at a local community center that provided programs for children and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. At first, I didn’t know what to expect, but it quickly became clear that these individuals were not defined by their challenges—they were defined by their strength, determination, and the joy they found in everyday moments. Seeing their progress, celebrating their achievements, and witnessing their perseverance in the face of obstacles sparked a passion in me to dedicate my time, energy, and future career to supporting this community. While I do not currently have a family member with an intellectual disability, my relationships with the individuals I have worked with have profoundly shaped my outlook on life, my sense of purpose, and my educational goals. Spending time with them has taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of listening and understanding before acting. I have learned to celebrate small victories—whether it’s an individual successfully completing a task they once struggled with, expressing themselves in a new way, or forming a meaningful connection with someone else. These experiences have not only helped me develop practical skills as a caregiver and advocate but have also shaped me as a person, instilling in me a deep respect for the inherent value of every individual and a commitment to creating opportunities for them to thrive. Education has played a central role in helping me transform this passion into a clear path for my future. Through my coursework and studies, I have been able to gain a more thorough understanding of human development, behavioral science, and the ways in which educational and social programs can support individuals with intellectual disabilities. Learning about these topics has not only broadened my perspective but has also given me the tools to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Education has helped me recognize that support for individuals with intellectual disabilities is not just about care—it is about advocacy, empowerment, and creating inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Throughout my academic journey, I have faced challenges that have strengthened my determination and resilience. Balancing demanding coursework with volunteering and personal responsibilities has taught me time management, perseverance, and the importance of staying focused on long-term goals even when immediate progress feels slow. I have encountered moments of self-doubt, wondering if I am capable of making the impact I hope to achieve. However, my experiences with individuals in the intellectual disability community have reminded me that even small actions—offering encouragement, helping someone achieve a goal, or simply listening—can create meaningful change. Overcoming these challenges has reinforced my belief that education is not just a personal achievement but a tool I can use to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Looking forward, I hope to use my education and experiences to advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities, support families in navigating available resources, and promote inclusive practices in schools, workplaces, and communities. I want to help create an environment where individuals are celebrated for their abilities, where they feel safe, understood, and empowered, and where society recognizes the value of diversity in all its forms. My goal is to combine my academic knowledge with hands-on experience to provide compassionate care, effective advocacy, and meaningful opportunities for growth. I want to be someone who not only supports individuals with intellectual disabilities but also inspires others to see their worth, potential, and contributions to the world. In the end, my commitment to this community is about more than just a career—it is about a calling. It is about standing alongside individuals who are often underestimated, giving them a voice, and helping them achieve their fullest potential. The lessons I have learned from this community—the importance of patience, resilience, empathy, and unconditional support—are lessons that I carry into every aspect of my life. By pursuing this path, I hope not only to make a difference in the lives of those I work with but also to grow into a person who embodies the values of compassion, advocacy, and respect for all. Through education, experience, and dedication, I hope to help create a future where every individual, regardless of ability, is given the opportunity to thrive, be celebrated, and leave their mark on the world.
      Champions for Intellectual Disability Scholarship
My decision to pursue a career supporting the intellectual disability community stems from a combination of personal experience, long-term responsibility, and a commitment to creating a more inclusive society. My first and most influential inspiration came from growing up with my cousin, who has an intellectual disability. From early childhood, I saw how the world around him was not always built with his needs in mind. Simple things—classroom assignments, social interactions, or even navigating public spaces—often became obstacles. Yet I also saw how the right support, patience, and understanding allowed him to thrive in ways many people underestimated. That early exposure shaped not only how I viewed disability, but also how I viewed people, resilience, and fairness. As I became older, my role shifted from simply being a family member to becoming one of his informal caretakers. I helped him with daily routines, schoolwork, and communication challenges. Those moments taught me responsibility and empathy at a young age. Working with him required learning how to break tasks down into steps, how to stay patient when progress was slow, and how to creatively adjust strategies when something wasn’t working. Those experiences helped me develop skills I now realize are essential in this field: adaptability, consistency, and genuine compassion. Being so closely involved in his life also opened my eyes to the gaps that still exist in education, healthcare, and public understanding of intellectual disabilities. I saw how my aunt often had to fight for services or accommodations that should have been standard. I saw how teachers, though well-meaning, sometimes lacked the training or resources to fully support him. Witnessing these systemic limitations is what pushed me toward wanting to make a broader impact, beyond just helping one person in my family. These experiences heavily influenced my educational and career goals. I want to work in a field where I can advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities, provide direct support, and help build systems that give them more autonomy and higher quality of life. Whether through special education, social services, behavioral support, or community-based programs, my goal is to help develop environments where people with intellectual disabilities are not limited by misunderstanding or lack of access. I hope to make a difference by contributing to better support structures—structures that respect individuality, dignity, and long-term independence. I want to work with families the way others worked with mine, helping them navigate challenges and ensuring they feel supported rather than alone. I also want to help challenge harmful stereotypes and increase public understanding so that individuals with intellectual disabilities can participate more freely and confidently in society. Ultimately, my cousin’s influence has shaped not only my career path but also my values, my sense of purpose, and the way I approach people. He taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of celebrating every win, no matter how small. The impact he has had on me motivates me to dedicate my career to uplifting others like him, advocating for equity, and ensuring that every individual—regardless of disability—has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
