STEAM Generator Scholarship
Entering higher education as an outsider to the system presents unique challenges and opportunities. As a first-generation immigrant, my academic journey has been shaped by cultural transitions, financial constraints, and the need to redefine my identity in a new country. Despite these hurdles, my experiences have strengthened my resilience, broadened my perspective, and fueled my ambition to achieve success in academia and beyond. Pursuing a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado Denver is not just a step toward professional growth but also a testament to the perseverance that defines my journey.
Coming to the United States in August 2020 from Malaysia on an F-1 student visa was both exciting and daunting. The American education system was vastly different from what I had known, and I often felt like an outsider, navigating unfamiliar expectations. My religious conversion from Islam to Christianity added another layer of complexity, as it distanced me from my cultural background while simultaneously reinforcing my sense of purpose. While some immigrants find comfort in their cultural communities, my transition required me to forge a new identity in an environment where I lacked immediate familial or communal support.
Financial hardship has been a significant factor in my educational experience. Unlike many of my peers who had the security of familial financial backing, I had to be strategic about funding my education. I worked diligently to support myself, balancing academic demands with employment responsibilities. Recently after moving to Denver for work, I faced the instability of losing my job. Though I quickly secured another job, this experience reinforced the precarity that many immigrants endure. However, these challenges have only made me more determined to achieve financial independence and build a stable future. My goal of reaching a net worth of $1 million by 2030 is not just about personal wealth. It is about securing opportunities for myself and contributing to my community.
Despite these challenges, my immigrant background has given me unique strengths that I bring to my academic pursuits. Adaptability, perseverance, and a global perspective are qualities that set me apart. My experiences have given me a deep appreciation for environmental issues, as I have witnessed firsthand the consequences of climate change and deforestation in Malaysia. These observations have strengthened my resolve to contribute to sustainable solutions through scientific research and policy advocacy. Higher education will equip me with the expertise needed to address these pressing environmental concerns while also allowing me to mentor other immigrants who face similar struggles.
Looking ahead, I recognize that my journey will continue to be marked by challenges. The uncertainty surrounding my asylum application adds an additional layer of complexity to my future. However, I refuse to let these uncertainties deter me from my goals. Higher education is not merely a means to an end. As an outsider, I have had to work twice as hard to gain a foothold in this system, but I believe that my persistence and passion will ultimately pave the way for success.
In conclusion, my experience as a first-generation immigrant has profoundly shaped my educational journey. The struggles of adaptation, financial constraints, and cultural displacement have been difficult, but they have also fostered resilience and ambition. I enter higher education not only as a student seeking knowledge but as an individual determined to overcome barriers and create opportunities for myself and others. My journey is proof that even as an outsider, I belong in the pursuit of academic excellence, and I am ready to embrace the challenges ahead.
Environmental Kindness Scholarship
Growing up in Malaysia, a country known for its lush tropical rainforests and rich biodiversity, I developed an intrinsic connection to nature from an early age. However, it was not until I experienced real, natural snow for the first time that my passion for protecting the environment crystallized. Coming from a tropical rainforest country, the sight of snow covering the landscape was nothing short of mesmerizing. This pristine blanket, with each flake a tiny masterpiece, ignited my curiosity about the natural world and the changes it undergoes. My interest in skiing and uncertain weather forecasts further deepened my fascination with climate systems and the environmental impacts of human activities. This personal journey led me to switch my major from pharmaceutical sciences to environmental studies, despite the risks involved and set me on a path toward a career in environmental science.
My academic journey has been defined by a commitment to understanding and addressing the complex challenges posed by climate change. Through my studies in Environmental Studies, Ecology, and Evolutionary Biology, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of both natural and social sciences. This interdisciplinary approach has equipped me with the knowledge to tackle environmental issues from multiple perspectives, focusing on the ecological effects of artificial snow and the broader impacts of climate variability. My hands-on research experiences, particularly with phenology models and climate data, have further honed my analytical skills and prepared me for the rigors of graduate-level studies in environmental sciences.
Combating climate change requires a multifaceted approach, combining scientific research with practical solutions. My studies will enable me to explore critical questions related to the ecological impact of artificial snowmaking at ski resorts, the dynamics of weather systems, and the health of natural environments. By understanding these complex interactions, I aim to develop strategies that mitigate negative environmental impacts and promote sustainable practices. This knowledge is crucial for advancing the field of environmental sciences and contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
Beyond academic research, addressing climate change involves raising awareness and encouraging sustainable practices at the individual level. To my family and friends, I offer the following advice to reduce their carbon footprint: Adopt sustainable transportation methods such as walking, biking, or using public transportation whenever possible. Carpooling and driving fuel-efficient or electric vehicles can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Simple actions like turning off lights when not in use, using energy-efficient appliances, and insulating homes can reduce energy consumption. Embracing renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, can further decrease reliance on fossil fuels.
Minimizing waste by reducing consumption, reusing items, and recycling materials helps conserve resources and reduce landfill waste. Supporting products with minimal packaging and those made from recycled materials can make a significant difference. Adopting a plant-based diet or reducing meat consumption can lower the carbon footprint associated with food production. Supporting local and organic farmers also promotes sustainable agricultural practices. Using water-saving fixtures, fixing leaks, and practicing mindful water usage can conserve this precious resource and reduce the energy required for water treatment and distribution. Advocating for policies that promote renewable energy, protect natural habitats, and reduce emissions is essential. Voting for leaders committed to environmental sustainability is a powerful way to drive systemic change.
In conclusion, my passion for protecting the environment is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and academic pursuits.By combining academic knowledge with practical solutions, I am committed to combating climate change and promoting a sustainable future. Encouraging my family and friends to adopt environmentally friendly practices is a crucial step in this collective effort to protect our planet.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
The shrill ring of the school bell, signaling the end of another monotonous day, was a sound I had come to dread. For most, it marked freedom, but for me, it was a reminder of the anxiety that waited for me at home. My journey with mental health has been full of challenges, realizations, and growth, deeply shaping my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. During high school, I often felt overwhelmed by the pressure to excel in all areas of life. This constant stress led to persistent anxiety and episodes of depression. At first, I kept these feelings to myself, thinking that admitting them would show weakness. But as things got worse, I realized I needed help and decided to see a therapist.
Therapy was a turning point for me. Sitting across from a compassionate therapist, I began to understand and untangle my emotions. I learned that asking for help is a brave step towards healing, not a sign of weakness. One of the biggest ways my mental health journey has influenced my life is by changing my goals. Before, I was driven by the need for external validation, believing that success meant happiness. However, through therapy and self-reflection, I started to set goals that aligned with my passions and values. This led me to pursue a career in psychology, hoping to support others in their mental health journeys just as my therapist supported me. I want to advocate for mental health awareness and help reduce the stigma around seeking help.
My relationships have also been deeply affected by my mental health experiences. At first, my struggles created barriers, making it hard to connect with others. I was often irritable, withdrawn, and felt misunderstood. However, as I learned to manage my mental health, my relationships improved. Therapy taught me the importance of communication and vulnerability. I began to share my experiences with friends and family, which led to deeper connections and mutual support. This openness not only strengthened my existing relationships but also helped me form new, meaningful connections with people who value honesty and empathy.
Furthermore, my understanding of the world has been enriched by my mental health journey. I have developed a deep sense of empathy and compassion for others, realizing that everyone has their hidden struggles. This awareness has made me more patient and less judgmental, qualities that are crucial for building a supportive and inclusive community. I have also become an advocate for mental health, volunteering at local organizations and participating in awareness campaigns. Through these efforts, I hope to help create a world where mental health is prioritized, and people feel empowered to seek help without fear of stigma.
In conclusion, my experience with mental health has profoundly impacted my life. It has reshaped my goals, deepened my relationships, and broadened my understanding of the world. While the journey has been challenging, it has also been a source of significant growth and resilience. As I move forward, I am committed to using my experiences to support others, advocate for mental health awareness, and contribute to a more compassionate and understanding society.
