    Education is more than the transfer of knowledge, it is the process of someone discovering what they are capable of. Education doesn’t happen only in classrooms, it happens in conversations, in accomplishments, in pushing oneself past their limits. They aren’t only changing how much they know but education is changing how they see themselves. During my time as a FAME Teacher Fellow, I learned what the impact of education can truly look like. I taught biology to middle school students in an inner-city classroom, and when I first met my students, I noticed that many of them did not trust themselves as thinkers. They were capable of understanding science, but they often waited for someone else to provide the answer instead of believing they could figure it out themselves. I began to realize that my responsibility was not simply to teach them biology; it was to help them recognize that they were capable of doing biology. I encouraged my students to ask questions, explain thor reasoning, make mistakes, and try again. Rather than immediately giving them answers, I pushed them to think through problems and trust their own ideas. Over the course of the program, I watched them become more confident in their ability to learn and understand science. Academically, every student improved by at least ten points from their pre-assessment to their post-assessment, and our class finished with an average of a B. However, the most meaningful outcome was not found in their scores. It was seeing students who once doubted their thinking begin to believe in themselves. By the end of the summer, they did not only learn science; they believed they could do science. My experience with FAME changed the way I understood education. I once thought education was primarily gaining knowledge and preparing for a career. Now, I understand it as a source of confidence, opportunity, and empowerment. Education can give a student the knowledge to answer a question, but meaningful education can also give them the confidence to believe they are capable of finding the answer. Watching my students grow taught me that some of the greatest outcomes of education cannot be measured by a test. Sometimes, the greatest impact is a student raising thor hand when they once stayed quiet, attempting a problem they once thought was too difficult, or finally seeing themselves as capable. Education has the power to change not only what students know but what they believe is possible for themselves. Due to this, I see my education as both an opportunity and a responsibility. As I continue studying biology and preparing to become an educator, I want to use what I have learned to help students recognize their own potential. I want to create classrooms where students are encouraged to question, explore and make mistakes and see themselves as scientists rather than simply students learning science. My long-term goal is to expand access to meaningful STEM education, particularly for students from communities where those opportunities may not always be accessible. I want my education to extend beyond my own success and become something that creates opportunities for others. If I can help another student discover the same confidence my FAME students discovered, then my education will have a purpose far beyond a degree.

    As a STEM student majoring in biology with minors in chemistry and education, I have learned that pursuing a career in science requires both passion and sacrifice. My journey has been shaped by perseverance, leadership, and a deep commitment to creating opportunities for students who are often underrepresented in STEM fields. While I am proud of how far I have come, I also recognize the financial challenges that accompany preparing for a professional program and future career in science. One of the greatest challenges I face is the financial burden associated with advancing my education and career. As I prepare for graduate programs I anticipate expenses related to admissions tests, application fees, study materials, transportation, and professional development opportunities. These costs can quickly become overwhelming, especially for students balancing academics, leadership responsibilities, and community involvement. Even purchasing preparation materials or paying for multiple applications can create stress and force students to make difficult decisions about which opportunities they can realistically pursue. Despite these obstacles, I have remained committed to my goals. Throughout college, I have dedicated myself to leadership and service while maintaining a strong academic foundation in STEM. I founded CommUNITY, an organization focused on creating belonging and connection among students, and I have consistently advocated for greater representation and support for minorities in STEM and education spaces. My experiences have shown me how important mentorship, encouragement, and access to resources are for student success. However, I have also seen how financial barriers can discourage talented students from continuing on their path. Receiving this scholarship would significantly reduce the financial pressure associated with pursuing my professional goals. Instead of worrying about how to afford exam preparation materials, application costs, or certification expenses, I would be able to focus more fully on my academics, research interests, and preparation to become an active member in science. This support would also allow me to continue participating in leadership opportunities and community initiatives that align with my long-term mission of increasing diversity and equity in STEM. My ultimate goal is to establish a K-12 STEM school and eventually pursue a master’s degree in educational leadership. I want to create classrooms where students from all backgrounds feel seen, capable, and inspired to pursue science. As someone who understands what it feels like to navigate predominantly white academic spaces as a Black student, I hope to serve as a role model for students who may not often see themselves represented in STEM careers. I believe representation matters, and I want my students to know that they belong in science, technology, medicine, and research fields. In the future, I plan to give back by mentoring students, creating STEM outreach programs, and continuing initiatives that bridge the gap between minority communities and STEM opportunities. I want to provide students with the support, encouragement, and resources that can help them overcome the same barriers I have faced. This scholarship would not only invest in my education, but also in the countless students and communities I hope to impact throughout my career.

    My name is Alexandria Smith, and I am a freshman at Claflin University majoring in Biology with a double minor in Chemistry and Education. I aspire to become a middle school science teacher and, ultimately, establish my own STEM school to provide equitable access to quality education for underrepresented communities. I currently serve as a freshman representative on the Honor’s Council and as the Freshman Class Secretary, where I advocate for my peers and work to foster a supportive and inclusive academic environment. As the eldest daughter in my family, with an older brother and a younger sister, I have always embraced leadership and responsibility. Beyond my academic and extracurricular commitments, I have dedicated six years to teaching children's church and leading praise dance at my local church. I believe in the power of mentorship and community engagement to shape young minds and inspire positive change. My commitment to fostering inclusivity extends to my linguistic pursuits as well. I have studied Spanish and American Sign Language for four years and recently embarked on learning Arabic. These languages not only enrich my personal growth but also equip me to connect with diverse communities and students in the future. My vision for impacting the world begins with the classroom. Middle school is a critical period where students develop self-awareness and academic curiosity. By becoming an educator, I aim to create a learning environment that dismantles language and socio-economic barriers, ensuring that all students—regardless of their background—have the resources and encouragement needed to succeed. I am deeply committed to addressing systemic inequalities in education, particularly in underprivileged districts, by advocating for equitable access to resources, mentorship, and quality instruction. Beyond teaching, my long-term goal is to establish a STEM school that prioritizes hands-on learning, cultural competency, and student empowerment.
