My name is Alejandro Velez and I am of Puerto Rican descent. Although I was born in the United States, my father was born on the island and my mother was born to Puerto Rican parents. I was recently accepted into the University of Florida Honors Program and I intend on majoring in Computer Science at the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering. Since middle school, finding a technical job to serve others has always been very vital to me and I plan on taking another step toward that goal in college. Computer science is the gateway to success in the next generation. The demand for better software for modern technologies has always continued to rise. Not only will it be vital for me to be employed in this area, but it would be pleasing as well. The creation of anything -- whether it is bridges, stories, or programs -- has consistently brought senses of joy, confidence, and satisfaction to the creator. I have certainly felt this way whenever I completed any program that my high school computer science teacher has assigned to me over the years. By continuing my education in computer science, I will be striving for a fulfilling career that potentially could make large impacts in the world. It is important for me to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, and to make a difference in the world. Being a member of the Interact Club has allowed me to be more involved and make a difference in my community. This volunteer-based club is dedicated to supporting public and private entities in our local area as well as making international connections. I have been a member since my freshman year and then took on a leadership role, as an officer, my junior year. The Interact Club members are involved in hands-on service projects, such as beach cleanups, fundraisers, and school supply drives. My most memorable moment with the club was when we prepared for a service project event at a local nursing home. The officers shopped for supplies, set up decorations at the location, and entertained the elderly. They seemed to enjoy every minute of the event. Through this service project, I learned the effects that compassion has on strangers. The Interact Club is very meaningful to me because not only am I supporting those in need in my community, but I am also benefiting myself. I find a unique sense of fulfillment when I perform these events that I can’t find anywhere else. This moment I realized that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can make a difference in the world. Being able to serve others in my high school career is a great step towards my greater goal of helping others through the STEM world. Computer science is a powerful industry. Whether it is creating the software to send humans to Mars or programming an AI bot to aid in healthcare services, I will hopefully be able to use computers to help people for the better.
