Bio

Hello! My name is Alejandra Sierazy. I am a junior at Butler University. I am majoring in Psychology/Sociology and minoring in Political Science and Art with the goal of becoming an art therapist. I am the president of the Latino Student Union, a member of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars and a Resident Assistant. Traveling, art, food, running, reading, and plants are a few of my interests. I have been running my own small business for 7 years, and have been successful in growing as an entrepreneur. Selling art and jewelry, I appear at markets and festivals. I'm active in my community as a volunteer for ArtMix, the university engagement program, and as a foster for orphaned kittens. My strong commitment to campus and community has earned me the Emerging Leader Award and Sophomore of the Year at Butler University. I am passionate about learning and experiencing new things both academically and through travel. I am focused and determined in everything I do, striving to be my best. I strongly believe that my experiences in college will allow me to grow as an individual and secure a position for myself in this ever-changing community. I aim to be someone who acts upon kindness and creative thinking to better help people from all walks of life, utilizing my perseverance to benefit others.

Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by how the mind works and how people express emotions–especially when words fall short. Art became my first language for understanding and connecting to others, long before I knew it could be a profession. My curiosity for bridging the gap between expressing oneself and one’s emotions led me to pursue a career in mental healthcare. Art-therapy is a way for me to combine my passion (art) with my purpose (helping others). Choosing this path wasn’t only an academic decision, but a deeply personal one. Growing up, I witnessed my father struggle with alcoholism and depression as a first responder. Seeing the impact of untreated mental health challenges made me aware of how vital accessible care is and inspired my commitment to helping others heal. I’m currently majoring in psychology and sociology, with minors in art and political science. My academic and extracurricular experiences focus on the intersection of culture, creativity, and mental health. I’m particularly passionate about advocating for children, marginalized communities, and individuals affected by substance use. Through art-therapy, I hope to provide safe, culturally sensitive spaces where individuals can explore emotions, find empowerment, and begin healing. Beyond the classroom, I’m actively building the foundation for my career. I hold executive positions in the Latino Student Union and Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. Through these roles, I organize initiatives and events that reduce stigma around mental healthcare and increase awareness of resources, while shining a light on my culture. I’m also a Morton Finney Scholar, a program that emphasizes hands-on community service. This has pushed me out of my comfort zone so much, and through it I have met so many amazing people. I've been able to serve the Indianapolis community, as well as meet people in my future field while volunteering at related events. I often take part in local cleanups, 5ks, invasive plant pulling, and blood drives. My service each month and reflecting on the experiences has deepened my understanding of how leadership can create positive community impact. These programs are shaping my dedication to service-driven leadership and community advocacy. Relating to my future, I’m certified in Mental Health First Aid and participate in a psychology lab. As a research assistant in Dr. Martin’s ab, I contribute to a project revising the Hinting Task, a tool used to measure Theory of Mind—the ability to understand others’ emotions and intentions. This experience has strengthened my analytical thinking and research skills while deepening my interest in understanding how psychological research can improve mental health awareness and reduce disparities in care. I also regularly volunteer with ArtMix, teaching art as a form of self expression to children with disabilities. Their mission is to transform the lives of people through the creation of art, finding peace and community. By making art accessible, we can spread joy and creativity to people of all backgrounds. These experiences have reinforced my belief that mental healthcare must be inclusive, accessible, and representative of different groups. I aspire to earn my master’s and licensure in art-therapy and develop programs that impact underserved populations. My goal is to create a more equitable healthcare system where mental health is prioritized and everyone has the opportunity to heal through creativity. I've been laying down the foundational blocks to achieve these goals ever since I was small, learning how to speak to and comfort others. To me, building my career is like placing stepping stones across a river; every certification and relationship I build is a deliberate step toward creating a stable path for others from diverse backgrounds to follow.

Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by how the mind works and how people express emotions–especially when words fall short. Art became my first language for understanding and connecting to others, long before I knew it could be a profession; as I enjoyed doing things like making small play-dough characters for my friends in preschool. My curiosity for bridging the gap between expressing oneself and one’s emotions led me to pursue a career in mental healthcare and tackle this critical societal concern. Art-therapy is a way for me to combine my passion (art) with my purpose (helping others). Choosing this path wasn’t only an academic decision, but a deeply personal one. Growing up, I witnessed my father struggle with alcoholism and depression as a first responder. I assist with collecting, coding, and analyzing behavioral data while also helping review literature on how intersectionality influences mental illness and stigma. This experience has strengthened my analytical thinking and research skills while deepening my interest in understanding how psychological research can improve mental health awareness and reduce disparities in care. I also regularly volunteer with ArtMix, teaching art as a form of self expression to children with disabilities. Ever since childhood, I've been fascinated by how the mind works. This curiosity, combined with my passion for art, has driven me to pursue a degree in healthcare to become an art therapist. Choosing to study psychology and art therapy wasn't just an academic decision for me; it was a personal one. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, often feeling isolated in his battles. Over time, I realized how vital mental health is to overall well-being, and I became zealous about helping others with similar problems. This sparked my desire to pursue a career in mental health, spreading awareness in my community. I want to change the narrative by becoming an art therapist who is both knowledgeable and culturally sensitive. By doing so, I hope to bridge the gap between mental health services and those that need them the most. At university, I'm a part of the Morton Finney Scholars and hold executive positions for two student organizations: the Latino Student Union, as well as Students of Color Allied in Healthcare (SOCAH). Within Morton Finney, I engage in diversity programming, group discussion, and have a requirement of completing at least 10 hours of community service each month. I've been able to serve the Indianapolis community hands-on, as well as meet people in my future field while volunteering at related events. Some of my favorite volunteer opportunities I've participated in were with the organizations For the Girls and ArtMix, teaching art as a form of self expression to children with disabilities. My service each month and reflecting on the experiences has deepened my understanding of how leadership can create positive community impact. This program is shaping my dedication to service-driven leadership and community advocacy. At LSU we collaborate with other organizations, such as SOCAH (students-of-color-allied-in-healthcare), to organize initiatives and plan events that reduce stigma around mental healthcare and increase awareness of resources, while shining a light on my culture. My participation in these clubs have solidified my belief in the significance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need–reducing negative notions of seeking help. These experiences reinforce my commitment to addressing inequities in healthcare and advocating for underserved communities. Like Kalia, I run cross country and track--and earned a Div 1 roster spot as a walk-on athlete. My experiences within these two sports has taught me teamwork, leadership, and balance. Being a student athlete in high school and being a student athlete in college are two different planets, and I've learned so much about myself and how I operate because of running--and these lessons have prepared me for my future. I now know how to manage my time better, prioritize school and well-being, as well as communication with my coaches, professors, and advisors when conflicts arise. The Kalia D Davis Memorial scholarship would help minimize the amount I will need to take out for student loans and reduces the need for multiple part-time jobs. I currently hold two part time jobs on campus, one as a life guard and the other as a youth swim instructor. This scholarship will ensure I can maintain a focus on my academics and athletics. It will allow me to continue to strive for excellence so that I can pave the way for future generations to be more open in the discussion of mental health. To me, building my career is like placing stepping stones across a river; every certification and relationship I build is a deliberate step toward creating a stable path for others from diverse backgrounds to follow.

My decision to pursue a career in mental health is deeply personal and rooted in my upbringing. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with substance abuse, depression, and PTSD resulting from his years as a first responder. Seeing the negative toll addiction took on my family, as well as the isolation my father felt in his battle, became defining parts of my life, and pushed me to become interested in mental health. His journey also taught me that these challenges are not reflections of weakness, but of immense strength and resilience, which I learned after seeing him work hard to be better for both himself and his family. These kinds of life experiences have directly determined the kind of provider I hope to be. I'm currently a student at Butler University majoring in psychology/sociology, and I aspire to become an art therapist. Art therapy is a way for me to combine my passion (art) with my purpose (helping others). I want to offer others the empathy and support I wish my father had during his rougher patches. My goal is to be a culturally sensitive provider who uses art as a powerful tool for healing and self-expression for those who struggle to find words for their troubles. Because of my backgrounds, I'm particularly passionate about advocating for marginalized communities, children, and those with substance abuse disorders, providing them with a safe and creative space to find empowerment and healing. I would like to help increase representation and diversity within the provider workforce, to bridge the gap between services and underserved populations. Representation matters, yet only 10% of art therapists are Hispanic, and a mere 2% of that are females. I strongly believe that greater diversity in the field of mental health care will help me provide an environment that is welcoming and accepting, thus creating an atmosphere free from stigma with regards to seeking help—which is common among many diverse populations, including immigrant and non-English speaking populations. I also advocate for a system where mental health is treated with the same importance and recognition as other aspects of health. Through my leadership in campus organizations like the Latino Student Union (LSU) and Students of Color Allied in Healthcare (SOCAH), I'm already working to spread awareness and ensure resources are accessible to those who need them most. By volunteering at organizations such as Artmix, I help teach art as a way of expression and healing for children with various backgrounds and special needs. I intend on going to graduate school to get my master’s in Art Therapy. Ideally, I’ll work at a children’s hospital, rehabilitation center, or have my own practice. I want to develop programs that provide accessible art therapy and care, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to express themselves and heal in a way not limited to just speaking. I plan to create positive change and give back to the world by helping others heal and bring people together through connection, creativity, and understanding and hopefully minimize the amount of people lost through mental health struggles. I look forward to spreading kindness, with my father as an example. I will continue to strive for excellence so that I can pave the way for future generations to be more open in the discussion of humanizing mental health. To me, building my career is like placing stepping stones across a river; every certification and relationship I build is a deliberate step toward creating a stable path for others from diverse backgrounds to follow.

Ever since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by the mind and how people process their emotions. That curiosity, combined with my passion for art, led me to pursue a career in healthcare—specifically, art therapy. Art therapy is a powerful tool for healing and self-expression, and I am eager to contribute to this field as a hispanic woman. A current undergraduate, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology and Sociology minoring in Political Science and Art. Choosing to study psychology wasn't just an academic decision for me; it was a personal one. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, feeling isolated in his battles. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am actively involved in extracurricular activities that enrich my college experience and personal growth. At university, I hold executive positions in both the Latino Student Union and Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. Within these organizations I help orchestrate events that spread awareness about mental health, inclusion and culture both on and off campus. Because of my involvement, I was awarded the Diversity Center's Emerging Leader Award. Being able to take advantage of all these invaluable experiences makes me confident I will be able to make a difference in my community. I am committed to gaining practical experience in my field and hope to inspire others from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in healthcare. I’ve spoken at a panel for Hispanic youth and am a part of a research lab where we study correlations between intersectionality and mental disorders. With this research, I will hopefully speak at conventions alongside my professors, meeting others and advancing my skills. I have already felt huge success and growth through my time at university. After earning my bachelor’s, I intend on going to graduate school to get my master’s in Art Therapy. Ideally, I’ll work at a children’s hospital, rehabilitation center, or have my own practice. My experiences working with diverse groups both in and out of college have solidified my belief in the significance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need. Regarding teletherapy, some great benefits are its ability to reach individuals in rural areas, or with mobility issues, as well as it's flexibility. It's innovative, and allows for people to be in connection and communication no matter where they are. I also appreciate how this can be done both over the phone or over a video call, as well as over text, to better fit the patient's comfort level. A possible challenge could be a potential "digital divide," where low-income families may lack private spaces or reliable internet to get the help they need. To innovate for diverse communities, we could focus on creating platforms that are multilingual and culturally tailored to ensure they are truly inclusive to everyone. I will continue to strive for excellence so that I can pave the way for future generations to be more open in the discussion of mental health. To me, building my career is like placing stepping stones across a river; every certification and relationship I build is a deliberate step toward creating a stable path for others from diverse backgrounds to follow.

Marsha Cottrell Memorial Scholarship for Future Art Therapists
Wind blowing through the curtains, I feel the morning sun on my face and am excited for another day ahead. Checking my busy schedule, I smile when thinking about how I ended up here--working my dream job, passionately helping others through the lens of an art therapist. Well...that's the plan anyways. Growing up, my father, my hero--who has been a firefighter for 26 years, deteriorated right before my eyes. As a child, I'd brag about the lives he saved, the trucks he drove, and his never-ending bravery. What I did not comprehend at the time was the other side of his work--how these tasks affected him and in turn my entire family. Art became an outlet for me, an escape from everything I was experiencing at home. I was constantly doodling on anything and everything I could. I began using art as a distraction and eventually it became more than an outlet. I enrolled in advanced art classes and was accepted into IB art in High School, an intensive two year art class. Much like Marsha, I too, believe that art is able to portray when words sometimes fail. With my father in the forefront, yearning to understand him better, I was motivated to pursue a degree in mental health as an Art Therapist, combining two of my passions--psychology and art. Now three+ years sober, my father continues to be an inspiration. Though we struggled as a family, through our shared journey, I discovered my purpose and calling. As a student at Butler University, I am majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. I also hold an executive position in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare and am a part of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. I am a member of both the varsity cross country and track teams and am fortunate enough to have been selected to be a part of an abnormal psychology research lab this semester. I also assist the Indianapolis community as a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization that works to transform the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. These experiences working with diverse groups both in and out of college have solidified my belief in the significance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible, reducing negative notions of seeking help. Because of my past, I'm particularly passionate about advocating for children, marginalized communities, and those with substance abuse disorders. I aim to provide a safe and creative space for them to explore their emotions and experiences, helping find healing and empowerment. I plan to create positive change and give back to the world as an art therapist, helping others heal and bringing people together through connection, creativity, and understanding. I believe that art is a universal language that can help process and express emotions without having to speak. I have found peace and calm through art, and am excited to show others how to utilize it as a path to recovery. I want to develop programs that provide accessible art therapy and care, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to express themselves and heal in a way not limited to just speaking. My goal is to create a more inclusive healthcare system where mental health is prioritized and thought of differently--helping people the way I wish my father had been sooner.

My small feet getting lost in the leather, I trudged around in his large boots. Swimming in fire-resistant fabrics I laughed at the excessive size difference between the clothes and my little hands. Growing up, I would frequent my father's fire stations with excitement and wonder. It was exhilarating to slide down the firefighter pole and play with the Dalmatian. I would get to sit in the firetruck and try on my dad's monstrous helmet. Often I’d brag at school about the lives he saved, the ambulance he drove, and the splendor of securing the community. But, as I got older, I began to see the other side of his career, and its toll on his mental health. While I admired his courage, I couldn’t ignore how his work had led to struggles with addiction and depression. It was during these formative years that I realized how deeply mental health affects a person’s well-being, and this understanding would shape my future. As time went on, the excitement of visiting the fire station faded into the background, overshadowed by the complexities of my father's battle with alcoholism. The man who once seemed invincible was consumed with addiction. His struggles were more than physical, straining his mental health. His depression worsened, causing moments of emotional distance that left me disjointed and resentful. Through it all, my father continued to impart lessons that would later guide my academic and personal pursuits. One was the value of resilience—the ability to persevere even when things are daunting. His journey showed me that mental health challenges are not a reflection of weakness but of immense strength, persisting despite adversity. Inspired by my experiences with my father, I decided to follow a career in the mental health field. His struggles sparked a passion in me to understand its intricacies and how it impacts those affected. I wanted to help people who were experiencing similar difficulties, offering them the empathy and support that I wish he had. I’m pursuing a degree in psychology and sociology–and plan to use my knowledge to raise awareness, reduce stigma, humanize mental health care, and create safe spaces for those struggling with mental health concerns. My goal is to become a certified Art Therapist, combining two of my passions-psychology and art. Because of my past, I'm particularly passionate about advocating for the mental health of children, people with substance abuse disorders, and marginalized communities. I plan to create positive change and give back to the world by helping others heal and bring people together through connection, creativity, and understanding. I want to change the narrative by becoming an art therapist who is both knowledgeable and culturally sensitive. By doing so, I hope to bridge the gap between mental health services and those that need them the most. I feel that in our modern society, asking for help is often looked down on, and expressing yourself through art is a great way to dip one’s foot in the water. I aim to provide a safe and creative space for people to explore their emotions and experiences, helping them find healing and empowerment to bring others together. I’ll bring positive change to the world by using my knowledge and experience to benefit others, creating an environment rooted in kindness and understanding. Addiction played a vital role in shaping me today. I look forward to spreading kindness, with my father as an example, helping those like him and Bryan. Now sober for three years, he continues to inspire me. My father may have struggled, but through our shared experiences, I found my purpose and calling.

I still remember my chubby hand gripping half an apple slathered in red paint making apple prints when I was three. I was fortunate to attend a preschool situated in a National Park with a focus on nature, and of course, art. Over the next two years I became proficient in holding a paintbrush and wiping off the excess paint that dripped off my brushes just a year earlier. As I continued to grow, art would become not only a hobby, but a part of me. Much like Alice Williams, I am passionate about the arts and cultural literacy, serving on multiple boards to make a greater impact. As a member of multiple DEI organizations, I aim to bring the joy of art into many campus activities. A first chair representative of the Latino Student Union, I hosted a pinata making event for the university student body. I have also been honored to display my artwork at the Sexual Assault Awareness Showcase and the Health Disparites Fair. I’ve gifted multiple pieces to my former preschool, the Field Station Cooperative, and most recently to the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare gala raising money for Indiana Child Care Answers. At the Art Now student showcase, two of my pieces were purchased to be displayed on campus! Culturally, it is wonderful that Butler University has a graduation requirement of eight cultural campus activities. As a freshman, I ended the year with ten and plan on continuing to attend as many as I am able, as these opportunities have been extremely enriching to my studies. In the Indianapolis community, I am a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of people with disabilities through art. I have also been fortunate to spend my time volunteering with I Support the Girls and the Harrison House, alongside being a member of both the cross country and track teams. Due to my commitment to community both on and off campus, I was recently awarded the Emerging Leader Award at Butler University. Not only am I passionate about the arts, I am also equally enamored with the human mind, which is why I am pursuing a future as a licensed Art Therapist. I am excited to be able to continue my passion for art in my future goals and delighted that it connects to both my professional and personal paths. To say I love creating art is an understatement. Art helps reduce stress and anxiety, boosts self-esteem, increases creativity and helps improve physical and mental health. I plan to positively impact my community by guiding patients in improving their mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and social-emotional behaviors through art. I am determined to be passionate in my role in my clients lives and contribute positively to the field of mental health. Working to normalize mental health as an everyday social issue, I want to change the narrative of its negative connotations and make a tangible difference in the lives of others. I look forward to creating partnerships in my community to strengthen and uplift our society as a whole, not only through mental health initiatives, but through other altruistic paths and honor those like Alice Williams. Art has played a large part in shaping me into who I am today. From the toddler gripping an apple slathered in paint to the young lady whose artwork is displayed on campus, I cannot imagine where I would be without art. Art has had such a positive impact on my life and I cannot wait to show others how to utilize it as a path to recovery.

Coughing, my throat felt sore as I hacked into my elbow. The scent of roasting chilis filled my lungs and I avoided wiping my eyes out of fear that the oils were still on my fingers. It was tamale day–one of my favorite times in which the family all got together. The music blared, bouncing off of the walls. As loud as it was, the sound of talking and laughter was louder. My Mexican heritage and family has always been rooted in bringing people together. I loved learning about my family’s history alongside the laughing adults, snacking on chips and homemade salsas--competing to see who could handle the spiciest peppers. These traditions weren’t just fun—they taught me how to value community, prioritize connection, and understand the importance of shared experiences. My family and culture has influenced me in numerous ways. They have shaped me into the person I am and helped remind me of the person I hope to become. I’ve always been fascinated by the mind and how people process their emotions. That curiosity, combined with my passion for art, led me to pursue a career in healthcare—specifically, art therapy. Choosing to study psychology wasn’t just an academic decision; it was personal. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, feeling isolated in his battles. Over time, I realized how vital mental health is to overall well-being, and I became zealous about helping others with similar problems. My heritage, with its strong family values and communal strength, taught me how essential it is to show up for others. That lesson has grown into a calling. Due to my background, I'm passionate about advocating for the mental health of children, people with substance abuse disorders, and marginalized communities. I’m not only looking to build a practice rooted in positive change, but want to also “build” the relationships that will help others heal and bring people together through connection and creativity. I want to become an art therapist who is both knowledgeable and culturally sensitive. By doing so, I hope to bridge the gap between mental health services and those that need them the most. I aim to provide a safe and creative space for people to explore their emotions and experiences, helping them find healing and empowerment to bring others together. Through these efforts, I will favorably impact my community, but more importantly, positively impact myself. My involvement will enrich my life and reinforce the importance of giving back. My goal is to help build a more inclusive healthcare system where mental health is prioritized. I’ll bring positive change to my community by using my knowledge and experience to benefit others, creating an environment rooted in kindness, with emphasis on creativity and diversity. My family has shaped this vision. The warmth of my culture, the strength of my family through hardship, and the values passed down to me in kitchens full of laughter and love—these are what inspire me to help others heal.

Replanting native gardens, hosting events, working booths for hispanic outreach, and donating my artworks at auctions are a few ways I have endeavored to make a difference on campus. Through the university engagement program I have been able to work with I Support the Girls and the Harrison House. NE1 NE-Dream Scholarship
Wind blowing through the curtains, I feel the morning sun on my face and am excited for another day ahead. Checking my busy schedule, I smile when thinking about how I ended up here--working my dream job, passionately helping others through the lens of an art therapist. Well...that's the plan, anyways. However, the dreams of my future are deeply rooted in my past. My small feet getting lost in the leather, I trudged around in his large boots. Swimming in fire-resistant fabrics I laughed at the excessive size difference between the clothes and my little hands. Growing up, I would frequent my father's fire stations with excitement. I would sit in the firetruck and wear my dad's monstrous helmet. I’d brag about the lives he saved, the ambulance he drove, and his bravery. But, as I got older, I began to see the other side of his career, and its toll on his mental health. While I admired his courage, I couldn’t ignore how his work had led to his struggles. It was during these formative years that I realized how deeply mental health affects a person’s well-being, and this understanding would shape my future. His journey showed me that mental health challenges are not a reflection of weakness but of immense strength, persisting despite adversity. Inspired by my experiences, I decided to follow a career in the mental health field. Currently at Butler University, I’m pursuing a degree in psychology and sociology, minoring in political science and art–and plan to use my knowledge to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and create safe spaces for my community. Coupled with my passion for art, my goal is to become an art therapist. I started my own business, Sierazy Art, and find that creating art helps me find peace. I’m excited to show others how to utilize art as a path to recovery. Working to normalize mental health as an everyday social issue in my community, I want to change the narrative of its negative connotations. My father’s influence also motivated me to engage in my community. I wanted to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. I realized that I could make an authentic impact, not solely through formal therapy but also with everyday interactions. As a freshman, it was my goal to become involved both on and off campus. I immediately joined multiple clubs and ran for leadership roles for a greater impact within the student body. I hold an executive position in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. I’m also a part of collegiate athletics on both the track and cross country teams. I began volunteering off campus at ArtMix. Being able to take advantage of all these invaluable experiences over the next several years makes me confident I will make a difference in my community. In my short time on campus, I have already felt immense personal growth and accomplishment and was recently honored with the Emerging Leader Award for my commitment to the student body and community. My father played a vital role in shaping me today. I passionately look forward to making an impact, with him as an example, embodying his values. I want to honor him by fostering an inclusive environment where mental health is treated with the same recognition as other, more socially acknowledged aspects of wellness. Guiding people in his shoes to recover, will be the greatest honor. Now happily sober for three years, he continues to inspire me. My father may have struggled, but through our shared experiences, I found my purpose and calling.

Growing up, my father, my hero--who has been a firefighter for 25 years, deteriorated right before my eyes. As a child, I'd brag about the lives he saved, the trucks he drove, and his never-ending bravery. What I did not comprehend at the time was the other side of his work--how these tasks affected him and in turn my entire family. As I grew older, though I could clearly see his struggles, he continued to inspire me and teach me valuable lessons, helping to shape me into who I am and influencing my future path. My father eventually entered an in-patient rehabilitation program across the country for 30 days. When he came home I was in awe of his transformation. My father instilled in me a strong desire to aid others and to stand up for those who are unable to. He inspires and reminds me to lead by example, ensuring everyone feels included. This was evident to my peers, and I was elected by the student body to be a part of "Natural Helpers," a transformative experience where I participated in a retreat and was guided on how to strengthen my communication and skills to better support others and provide service to our communities. With my father in the forefront, I decided to pursue a degree in mental health as an Art Therapist, combining two of my passions--psychology and art. I am currently majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. Upon arrival on campus it was my goal to become involved. I immediately joined multiple clubs and ran for leadership roles to have a greater impact within the student body. I hold an executive position in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare and am a part of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. Within these organizations, I have been active in volunteer work on and off campus, engaging in the well-being of my community. I also assist the Indianapolis community as a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization that works to transform the lives of people with disabilities through art. These experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental health care and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need. My upbringing has instilled in me the values of community, hard work, determination, resilience, and family. These beliefs have since guided me in my academic and personal journeys. With my father in mind, I strive to always approach each day with passion and empathy. I have attempted to achieve high standards in everything I do with persistence and a good attitude. In my short time at Butler University, I have felt immense personal growth, success, and accomplishment. As a result of my commitment to my campus and community I was just honored with the Emerging Student Leader Award at Butler University. I will tirelessly work to normalize mental health as an everyday social issue in my community and change the narrative of its negative connotations. Almost three years sober, my father continues to be an inspiration. Though we struggled as a family, through our shared journey, I discovered my purpose and calling.

Music echoing through my ears, I swayed along to the rhythmic guitar. The heat from the crowd radiated back onto me, and I continued to sing along smiling. Billy Joel was on the stage. I was blown away to be on the floor in the stadium, completely captivated by the song. Vienna was playing, one of his slower numbers--and I’d been waiting to hear this all night. Purple lights illuminated the arena, and Joel's words lulled in my ears. Except there was something louder than the song that distracted me. Nobody else paid any attention to them--a couple in front of us. They were shouting, the man in the woman's face pointing with a beer in hand. Spitting nasty words he stormed off and it was clear neither of them was listening to the song. As soon as he marched away, the woman, defeated, sunk into her chair. She fell to the ground, sobbing. Her hands covering her face, you could see the shaking coming from her body. I looked around in anticipation, longing for someone else to acknowledge that they had seen what I did, or say something. While Vienna pounded in my ears, I began to walk over through the herd of people. "Hey," I said, touching her shoulder. When the woman looked up it was clear how much what the man had said hurt her. Mascara flecks littering her pained face, her luminous eyes welled with tears. I asked if she was okay, and the woman said no. Shouting over Billy Joel, she told me her husband was a cheater, and had just cheated on her again. Asking if she needed a hug, the woman threw herself into my arms--this complete stranger, who just needed a few words of kindness. I held her as she cried, and our hands were interlaced for the rest of the song. I stayed with her a while, talking and enjoying the concert together. We sang Billy Joel at the top of our lungs, smiling and laughing as if we had known each other for years. Though I never got her name, I was all she needed at that moment. When I returned to my friends they said they never saw the couple arguing. As I look back at this small snippet of time, I am constantly reminded that even small gestures of kindness can turn the day around and create a positive connection. To think, I almost didn't go to the concert.

As a young girl I was excited to have a father who was a firefighter, however, as I grew older I began to see the other side of his career, and its toll on his mental health. Art has always been an outlet for me, an escape from everything I was experiencing at home. I was constantly doodling on anything and everything I could. I began using art as a distraction and eventually it became more than an outlet. I started decorating my friends shoes and ended up creating a little venture, called Sierazy Shoes. I enrolled in advanced art classes and was accepted into IB art in High School, an intensive two year art class. Over the years, I have grown my pastime into a small business, and renamed Sierazy Shoes to Sierazy Art. I have been graciously gifted a sublimation machine and supplies to turn my original works of art into t-shirts, stickers, mugs and more. I have been honored to donate my artwork to various fundraisers for silent auctions. I have gifted multiple pieces to the Field Station Cooperative preschool and most recently to the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare gala raising money for Indiana Child Care Answers. During my IB Art Shows and markets I have set aside money from each print sold to go to Pets In Need, an organization where I help foster kittens until they are ready to go to their forever families. I have always been interested in giving back to my community. My father instilled in me a strong desire to aid others and to stand up for those who are unable to. He inspires and reminds me to lead by example, ensuring everyone feels included. This was evident to my peers, and I was elected by my high school student body to be a part of "Natural Helpers," a transformative experience where I participated in a retreat and was guided on how to strengthen my communication and skills to better support others and provide service to our communities. I immediately joined multiple clubs and ran for leadership roles for a greater impact within the student body. I hold executive positions in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare and am a member of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. I have brought the joy of art into many campus activities. Most notably, planning and hosting a piñata making event for the university student body. In my community, I am a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. Redefining Victory Scholarship
To see me today, one would assume I’ve alway been determined, resilient and hard working. Honestly, those assumptions are true as these are values my father continually modeled. Growing up, I’d frequent my father's fire stations with excitement. I would get to sit in the firetruck and try on my dad's monstrous helmet. Often, I’d brag about the lives he saved, the trucks he drove, and his never-ending bravery. What I did not comprehend at the time was the other side of his work--how all these tasks affected his ongoing mental health. As I got older, it became clear that my father's job negatively impacted his life and mental health. Though I clearly could see his struggles, he continued to inspire me and teach me valuable lessons--shaping me into who I am and showing me what success truly looks like. My father instilled in me a strong passion to aid others and to stand up for those who are unable. He inspires and reminds me to lead by example. With my father in the forefront, I’m pursuing a degree in mental health as an Art Therapist, combining two of my passions--psychology and art. Though he struggled, through our shared journey, I discovered my purpose and calling. After spending a month in rehabilitation, my father worked tirelessly to rebuild himself and become the best version of himself he could be. It was motivating to see how he was able to turn his life around with so much resolve and determination. Influenced by his resilience, I channeled that into my own story of success. I found, through his courage and tenacity, that I was also more capable than I imagined. That fall, after running for three years with two torn labrums, I couldn't endure the pain any longer. I underwent bilateral hip surgeries. After nine months of recovery and intense physical training, I immediately emerged as my team’s top runner. Over the course of the season I dropped my personal best time by over ninety seconds and qualified as an individual for the state cross country meet. Encouraged by my newfound success and with a gentle push from my father, I contacted the coach of my dream school. Without any response back, I became focused on getting faster. Determined, I continued to train hard and drop time during track. First, the email came, and then a phone call. I was going to get to run at the D1 level, albeit as a walk on. These bits of my life relay immense stories of success achieved through hard work, determination and resilience. These beliefs have since guided me in my academic and personal journeys. Some may only see success through the car one drives, the amount of money one makes or a job title. For me, success is personal growth, pushing through setbacks and obstacles that sometimes cannot be seen from the outside, but felt from within. These strides that both my father and I have overcome have brought personal fulfillment and genuine happiness. With my father in mind, I strive to always approach each day with passion and empathy to make a positive impact on my community. I have attempted to achieve high standards in everything I do with persistence and a good attitude. As a freshman at Butler University, I have felt immense personal growth, success, and accomplishment. I hold executive positions in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. Within these organizations, I have been active in volunteer work on and off campus, engaging in my community. I also assist the Indianapolis community as a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization that works to transform the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. Following graduation I will enter a master’s program to become a licensed Art Therapist. Fostering connections, working through emotions by creating art, facilitating a safe and supportive space and providing opportunities to both grow and heal will be instrumental in the success of my practice. The Redefining Victory Scholarship would not only help alleviate my financial burden, but it would also allow more time to focus on my studies and extracurriculars. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work and exploring other opportunities that enhance my experiences and develop my skills. I’m extremely motivated to participate in research projects and internships that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to pursue these opportunities. Now, three years sober and counting, my father continues to inspire me. I am reminded daily how far he has come and I have every confidence in myself that I can be successful in anything I put my heart and mind to. Despite all the hardships and struggles, he has shown me how to truly thrive.

As a young girl I was excited to have a father who was a firefighter, in awe of his bravery and commitment to the community, however, as I grew older I began to see the other side of his career, and its toll on his mental health. Sadly, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, often feeling isolated in his battles. His struggles, coupled with my passion for art has led me to my calling. Art has always been an outlet for me, an escape from the emotional toils I was experiencing at home. I was constantly doodling on anything and everything I could. In eighth grade, one of my friends asked me to decorate a pair of shoes. From there it snowballed. Art became more than an outlet. I enrolled in advanced art classes and was accepted into my high school's IB art program. I began selling small original works of art and making prints of artwork. One of my mother's friends gave me a sublimation machine, and I began transferring my artwork onto mugs, t-shirts, stickers, magnets and more. Over the course of several years, I grew a small hobby business that I named @sierazyart. Currently a freshman at Butler University, I'm studying psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. I currently hold an executive position in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare and am a member of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. I also assist the Indianapolis community as a volunteer at ArtMix. After earning my bachelor's degree I plan to get my master's in Art Therapy. I have always found art as a place of solace and am excited to enable others to utilize it as a path to recovery. One day I hope to own my own practice where I can create a supportive space for others in my community. I am excited to guide patients in improving their mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and social-emotional behaviors through art. I am determined to contribute positively to the field of mental health as a woman of color. My familiarity on how to grow a business and experience networking will lend itself to helping me establish a successful practice. Not only do I already have business experience, I am an extremely hard worker with fortitude second to none. In 2020, I underwent double hip surgery to repair torn labrum from over training for cross country. I had been running, physically weakend, for over 3 years. My junior year, I opted to forgo my track season to repair my hips. After nine months of rehabilitation and intense physical training, I made it to the cross country state championship as an individual. Afterwards, I contacted my dream school, determined to earn a roster spot. My race times were not D1 material, but I knew I could get there. I was dedicated to my training and strived to be the best. During my final track season, I got my times where they needed to be and solidified a walk on spot at Butler University. My athletic journey has provided me with the values of hard work, dedication and persistence. In my short time at Butler University, I have felt immense personal growth, success, and accomplishment. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work and exploring other opportunities that enhance my experiences and develop my skills. I am extremely motivated to participate in research projects and internships that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to pursue these opportunities.

I enrolled in advanced art classes and was accepted into IB art in High School. I have been honored to donate my artwork to various fundraisers for silent auctions. I have gifted multiple pieces to the Field Station Cooperative preschool and most recently to Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. During my IB Art Shows and markets I have set aside money from each print to go to Pets In Need, an organization where I help foster kittens until they are ready to go to their forever families. As a freshman at Butler University, I am studying Psychology and Sociology while minoring in Visual Art and Political Science. I am excited to reach my goal of becoming an Art Therapist, combining two of my passions--psychology and art. Art is a universal language that can help process and express emotions without having to speak. I have always found peace and calm through art and am excited to show others how to utilize it as a path to recovery. Engaging in art relieves stress and anxiety as I found out in my formative years. I have brought the joy of art into many campus activities. In my community, I am a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. I am excited to work with ArtMix as an inclusive organization to strengthen my abilities. I will make an impact by fostering connections, working through emotions by creating art, facilitating a safe and supportive space and providing opportunities to both grow and heal. I look forward to continuing to create and donate art, volunteering with ArtMix, and exploring other opportunities that align with my aspirations to become an Art Therapist. I am motivated to participate in research projects and internships to enhance my abilities in my field and this scholarship would provide much needed support to pursue these opportunities.

Serving the community has been a pillar of my existence ever since I can remember. Having a firefighter father and non profit preschool teacher as a mother will do that to a kid. Growing up, I’d frequent my father's fire stations. It was exhilarating to slide down the pole and play with Jake, the Dalmatian. I would get to sit in the firetruck and try on my dad's monstrous helmet. I would brag about his bravery and service to our community. Watching my mother and father devote their energy and time to give back to our community inspired me to want to follow in their footsteps. My father instilled in me a strong desire to aid others and to stand up for those who are unable to. This was evident to my peers, and I was elected by my high school student body to be a part of "Natural Helpers," a transformative experience where I participated in a retreat and was guided on how to strengthen my communication and skills to better support others and provide service to our communities. This experience was only one of the ways I participated in strengthening my community. As I aged, I volunteered at my former preschool in their fundraising efforts, and enjoyed being a teacher’s aide over the summer. Beach cleanups, food pantry donations, and blood drives are a few of the ways we served in National Honors Society. I also cherish fostering newborn kittens for Pets In Need and the Humane Society. So far, I have helped to rehome over 30 kittens and have donated a portion of my art sales to these organizations. As a freshman at Butler University, it was my goal to become involved on and off campus. I immediately joined multiple clubs and ran for leadership roles to have a greater impact within the student body. I currently hold an executive position in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare and am a member of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. Within these campus organizations, I have been consistently engaging in volunteer work. Replanting the native gardens, working booths at fairs, and spearheading event, and donating my works of art are a few ways I have endeavored to make a difference on campus. I also assist the Indianapolis community as a volunteer at ArtMix, an organization that works to transform the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. I am currently majoring in psychology and sociology and minoring in political science and art. It is my goal to become an art therapist and guide patients in improving their mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and social-emotional behaviors through art. I am determined to contribute positively to the field of mental health as a woman of color. Daily, I will tirelessly work to normalize mental health as a social issue in my community with everyday actions rooted in kindness. Striving to always approach each day with passion, and empathy has guided me on my academic and personal journeys. I have attempted to achieve high standards in everything I do with persistence and a good attitude. In my short time at Butler University, I have felt immense personal growth, success, and accomplishment. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work and exploring other opportunities that enhance my experiences and develop my skills. I am extremely motivated to participate in research projects and internships that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to pursue these opportunities.

As I awoke, teeth chattering, I was in pain. More than I had felt in the past three years. I gazed across the room and saw my mother sitting there with a worried look on her face. I couldn't stop shaking, and it was causing my hip to throb. My mother came over, held my hands with furrowed brows as she could see the pain written across my face. This is just the first one, I thought to myself. One more to go. Three years ago I underwent labrum repair surgery, first on my left hip, then six weeks later, my right. The summer before my freshman year I began cross country training, however, it was 2020, and we weren't meeting together as a team. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to show my dedication. I ran more mileage than coach gave me. I wanted to stand out by putting in the extra work. Little did I know, I was doing TOO much and it wasn't long before I began to feel the extra few miles a little more than I should. Ignoring the ache, I continued to train hard. With every wince of pain, I assured myself that it was only making me stronger. It started to become hard to run. I began to miss meets on account of my hip pain, which resulted in my absence from the varsity postseason. That spring, I was diagnosed with bilateral hip tears. I did physical therapy, received cortisone shots and continued to run-for three years until going up stairs was daunting. Right after cross country finished up my junior year, my parents and I decided it was time. Knowing that I would miss my junior year of track, I was determined to come back stronger than ever. I began PT two days post surgery, and then again two days after my second surgery. Over the next four months I was persistent and determined to get stronger. I was nervous that when cross country came around I would be at the bottom of the pack. Determined that I wouldn't be, I trained harder and pushed myself more than I thought possible. When training began, I was voted Team Captain and emerged immediately as our team's top runner. I cut over 1 minute 30 seconds off of my personal best time and made it to the state meet as an individual. I had never thought I could run in college, it was never my plan. However, I realized-why not? I emailed my dream school, Butler University. It was a D1 school that I knew I wanted to attend, even if it meant I couldn't run. I didn't hear back, but that didn't stop me. I continued to send the coaches my updated times, to let them know I was coming to Butler, regardless, and wanted a roster spot, even if it was without athletic aid. During track, I excelled in the 3200m, getting faster with each meet. I was determined to catch the coach's eye. One day, on a bus ride home from a meet, I got an email. I was going to get to run at Butler, a D1 school. My athletic journey has not been like most. It’s shaped me in ways that spill over to every other aspect of my life. It's shown me hard work, dedication and above all persistence can get me places I never thought were possible. At university, I bring with me my drive to succeed and continue to make those around me better, all while making sure we are taking care of ourselves.

Growing up, I’d frequent my father's fire stations with excitement. It was exhilarating to slide down the firefighter pole and play with Jake, the Dalmatian. I would get to sit in the firetruck and try on my dad's monstrous helmet. I’d brag about the lives he saved, the trucks he drove, and his bravery. What I did not comprehend at the time was the other side of his work--how these tasks affected his ongoing mental health. Yet through it all, he always rose to the occasion to be a pillar of strength for our family. Though I clearly could see his struggles, he continued to teach me valuable lessons--shaping me into who I am and influencing who I will become. My mother took every attempt to shield us from reality. I began to help more around the house with my siblings, becoming someone they could turn to. I found the first bottle while doing laundry, the second when taking out the trash. Then came Covid. The illness that stopped the world, unless, you were a first responder. My father was at work more than he was at home. When he was at home I could see him drowning in his depression. Constantly, I watched my father get worse, then get better, only to fall off the wagon again. Focusing on school became difficult and I retreated to art. I began decorating shoes for my friends and started a little business called Sierazy Shoes. This side hustle grew into Sierazy Art. Not only was art a huge passion of mine, but I also enrolled in AP Psychology. I thought that this might provide me with some clarity as I was enamored by the human mind and addiction. The summer of 2022 my father entered an in-patient rehabilitation program across the country. When he came home I was in awe of his transformation. My father instilled in me a strong desire to aid others and to stand up for those who are unable. This was evident to my peers, and I was elected by the student body to be part of "Natural Helpers," a transformative experience where I participated in a retreat and was guided on how to strengthen my communication and skills to better support others and provide service to our communities. With my father in the forefront, I decided to pursue a degree in mental health as an Art Therapist, combining two of my passions--psychology and art. A first-year student at Butler University, I'm majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. I also hold executive positions in both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare and am part of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. I also volunteer at ArtMix, an organization that works to transform the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. These experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental health care and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need. Following graduation, I'll strive to create an inclusive environment where all my patients can feel empowered and seen. I am eager to achieve my goals by guiding patients in improving their mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and social-emotional behaviors through art. I'll tirelessly work to normalize mental health as an everyday social issue in my community. I want to change the narrative of its negative connotations. In my short time at college, I've already felt immense personal growth and accomplishment. I look forward to continuing my volunteer work and exploring other opportunities that enhance my experiences and develop my skills.

Wind blowing through the curtains, I feel the morning sun of my face and am excited for another day ahead. Checking my busy schedule, I smile when thinking about how I ended up here--working my dream job, passionately helping other through the lens of an art therapist. Well...that's the plan. My name is Alejandra Sierazy, a first-year student at Butler University, majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. My goal is to become an Art Therapist combining two of my passions--psychology and art. As the oldest of four children, I love to create art, read, travel, hike, RUN, foster kittens, drink matcha, and spend time with family and friends. Having a Hispanic background, I am excited to be part of multiple DEI programs on campus. I hold executive board positions with both the Latino Student Union and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. I am also a member of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars. Throughout these organizations, I have been active in volunteer work on and off campus, engaging in my community. These experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need. Social-emotional well being has been a constant factor in my life well before college. My father, my hero, has been a firefighter for 25 years. Often, I’d brag about the lives he saved, the trucks he drove, and his never-ending bravery. What I did not comprehend was the other side of his work--how these tasks affected him. As I aged, though I could clearly see his struggles, he continued to teach me valuable lessons helping to shape me into who I am. After rehabilitation, my father came back stronger than ever. I channeled his resilience to create my own success story. Undergoing bilateral hip repair surgeries and nine months of intense physical therapy in 2022, I made it to the state cross country championships. Using this as motivation, I contacted the coach of my dream college. Without response, I became relentless in getting faster. One day, I received an email. My hard work and perseverance paid off and culminated with D1 walk on roster spots for both the cross country and track teams. My upbringing has instilled values such as the importance of family, empathy, hard-work and perseverance, which have guided me throughout my journey. Working in a setting where I can make an impact, guiding people through difficult times and growing from them through art is my dream. In my community, I am a volunteer at ArtMix. This is an organization with a mission "to transform the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art." Engaging in art relieves stress and anxiety, as I found out myself in my formative years. Growing up I had always used creating art as a place of solace and escape. I became so invested in creating that I developed a small business, SierazyArt, that I still operate to this day. I am eager to achieve my goals and guide patients in improving their mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and social-emotional behaviors through art in a safe and supportive space. The Sloane Stephens Doc & Glo Scholarship would help alleviate my financial burden allowing more time to focus on my studies and extracurriculars. I am motivated to participate in research projects, and internships that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to pursue these opportunities.

I still have the picture of myself at the ripe age of 7 holding the Alejandra doll in Target. She was a beautiful tan color, with dark brown eyes and long brown hair. Not only did we look the same, we shared the exact same name. You know how you can never find that keychain with your name on it...well. Needless to say, that doll came home with me. Representation matters. My name is Alejandra Sierazy, and I'm a first-year student at Butler University, majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. My goal is to become an Art Therapist combining two of my passions--psychology and art. Having a Hispanic background, I am excited to be part of multiple DEI programs on campus. I hold an executive board position with the Latino Student Union and am also a member of the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars and the Students of Color Allied in Healthcare. Within these organizations are the central themes of inclusivity and service work. Through volunteer work, we engage in our community to aid hands-on and also plan events to spread awareness about social-emotional well being on campus and on a larger scale. All of these experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need. Hispanic Art Therapists account for a little over 10% of professionals in field. This clearly shows a growing need for mental health advocates who understand hispanic culture. Social-emotional well being has been a constant factor in my life well before college. My father, my hero, has been a firefighter for 25 years. I was enamored with the psychological aspect of addiction--as well as the mental illnesses and childhood experiences that led to it. Over time, I realized how vital mental health is to overall well-being, and I became passionate about helping others. As an art therapist I will be able to create an inclusive environment where all my patients can feel empowered and seen. Through art therapy, I aim to provide a safe space for individuals to explore their emotions and experiences, helping them to find restoration and empowerment. I want to develop programs that provide accessible art therapy and mental health care, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to express themselves and heal. I look forward to not only being an advocate, but also a mentor to underprivileged members in my community. I am eager to continue to be active within non profit organizations to inspire and guide future generations. I am motivated to participate in research projects and internships that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to pursue these opportunities.

My small feet getting lost in the leather, I trudged around in his large boots. Swimming in fire-resistant fabrics I laughed at the excessive size difference between the clothes and my little hands. Growing up, I would frequent my father's fire stations with excitement. It was exhilarating to slide down the firefighter pole, play with the Dalmatian, and eat snacks the workers shared. I would sit in the firetruck and try on my dad's monstrous helmet. Often I’d brag at school about the lives he saved, the ambulance he drove, and the splendor of securing the community. But, as I got older, I began to see the other side of his career, and its toll on his mental health. I started my own business, Sierazy Art, years ago and find that creating art helps me find peace. I am excited to show others how to utilize art as a path to recovery. Working to normalize mental health as an every day social issue in my community, I want to change the narrative of its negative connotations. My father’s influence also motivated me to engage in my community. I wanted to make a tangible difference in the lives of others, as he did. I was nominated to participate in the program "Natural Helpers," a retreat that taught us how to help students going through difficult times effectively. The training provided me with tools required to listen and aid others. I realized that I could make an authentic impact, not solely through formal therapy but also with everyday interactions. As a freshman, I hold an executive position in the Latino Student Union and participate in Students of Color Allied in Healthcare to plan events to spread mental health awareness on a larger scale. Also a part of collegiate athletics, I see mental health challenges that come with being an athlete. Helping my teammates through their struggles is extremely rewarding. I began volunteering at ArtMix, an organization that works to transform the lives of people with disabilities through the creation of art. Being able to take advantage of all these invaluable experiences over the next several years makes me confident I will make a difference in my community. My father played a vital role in shaping me today. I look forward to making an impact, with him as an example, embodying his values. My goal is to foster an environment where mental health is treated with the same recognition as other, more socially acknowledged aspects of wellness. By continuing to learn, raise awareness, and create supportive spaces for those in my community, I strive to contribute to a tomorrow where people don’t have to be alone in their challenges. Now happily sober for three years, he continues to inspire me. My father may have struggled, but through our shared experiences, I found my purpose and calling.

Wind blowing through the curtains, I feel the morning sun on my face as I blink sleep from my eyes. I stand up and make myself tea, excited for another day ahead. Checking my busy schedule, I review notes from the day before and smile when thinking about how I ended up here — working my dream job, passionately helping others through the lens of an art therapist. Well…that’s the plan anyway. Currently at Butler University, I am studying psychology and sociology along with minoring in art and political science. After earning my bachelor's degree I plan to get my master's in Art Therapy. I have always found art as a place of solace and am excited to enable others to utilize it as a path to recovery. One day I hope to own my own practice where I can create a supportive space for others in my community. Art has always been an outlet for me, an escape from everything I was experiencing at home. I was constantly doodling on anything and everything I could. In eighth grade, my doodles caught the eye of one of my friends, and she asked me to decorate a pair of shoes. From there it snowballed. First it was shoes for friends and then shoes for my family. My mother posted a pair of shoes on her social media, and it became shoes for people I didn't know. I started my own instagram page @sierazyshoes. Over the course of several years, I grew a small hobby business that I renamed @sierazyart. My familiarity on how to grow a business and experience networking will lend itself to helping me establish a successful practice. Not only do I already have business experience, I am an extremely hard worker with fortitude second to none. In 2020, I underwent double hip surgery to repair torn labrum from over training for cross country. I had been running in agony for over 3 years. My junior year, I opted to forgo my track season to repair my hips. After nine months of intense physical training, I made it to the cross country state championship as an individual. Afterwards, I contacted my dream school, determined to earn a roster spot. My race times were not D1 material, but I knew I could get there. I was dedicated to my training and strived to be the best. During my final track season, I got my times where they needed to be and solidified a walk on spot at Butler University. In all my endeavors, I aim to be successful. I continually follow my dreams while working hard to meet my goals. I will have accomplished my ambitions by making a difference in my community while living a happy and healthy life.

While I admired his courage, I couldn’t ignore how his work had led to struggles with alcoholism and depression. Currently at Butler University, I’m pursuing a degree in psychology and sociology, minoring in political science and art–and plan to use my knowledge to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and create safe spaces for those struggling. Coupled with my passion for art, my ultimate goal is to become an art therapist. I started my own business, Sierazy Art, years ago and find that creating art helps me find peace and calm. I am excited to show others how to utilize art as a path to recovery. Working to normalize mental health as an every day social issue in my community, I want to change the narrative of its negative connotations. My father’s influence also motivated me to engage in my community actively. I wanted to make a tangible difference in the lives of others, as he did. In high school, I was nominated to participate in the program "Natural Helpers," a retreat that taught us how to help students going through difficult times effectively. The training provided me with tools required to listen and aid others. I realized that I could make an authentic impact, not solely through formal therapy but also with everyday interactions rooted in kindness. As a freshman, I hold an executive position in the Latino Student Union where we partner with Students of Color Allied in Healthcare to plan events to spread mental health awareness on a larger scale. Also a part of collegiate athletics, I see mental health challenges that come with being an athlete. Helping my teammates through their struggles is extremely rewarding. Being able to take advantage of all these invaluable experiences over the next several years makes me confident I will be able to make a difference in my community. Alcoholism played a vital role in shaping me today. I look forward to making an impact in my community, with my father as an example, embodying his values in my future career. I am a first-year student at Butler University, majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. I am excited to be a part of the Latino Student Union, the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars and operate my small business, Sierazy Art. My upbringing has instilled values such as the importance of family, hard work, travel and perseverance, which have guided me throughout my academic journey. Growing up, my family faced challenges due to my father's struggle with alcoholism. As a young girl, analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism profoundly influenced my way of thinking. I was enamored with the psychological aspect of addiction--as well as all the mental illnesses and childhood experiences that led to it. Helping take care of my siblings during these difficult times influenced my decision to pursue a career in the mental health field. Working in a setting where I can positively impact other people, assisting them through the difficult times in their lives and growing through art is my dream. My father may have struggled, but through our shared journey, I found my purpose and calling. Two years sober and counting, my father continues to be an inspiration on my path to benefiting others from our experiences. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am actively involved in extracurricular activities that enrich my college experience and personal growth. As a member of the cross-country and track teams, I have learned the value of perseverance, teamwork, and discipline. Running has taught me to push through challenges and stay committed to my goals, qualities that I apply to my academic and personal life. In 2022, I had double hip surgery to repair my labrums. Following nine months of intensive physical therapy, I emerged as my team’s top runner and qualified for state. Due to my drive and persistence, I was awarded a walk-on spot at Butler University. Unfortunately, this honor did not come with athletic aide. I am also a participant in the Morton Finney Diversity Scholarship Program, which has provided me with invaluable resources and support. Through service work, we engage in our community to aid hands-on. Moreover, I am honored to serve as the freshman chair of the Latino Student Union, where we foster a sense of community and support among Latino students. I have continued my small business, @SierazyArt, selling my creations to help offset my accumulating college debt. In the summers I am a lifeguard at the local YMCA and foster kittens through the Humane Society. This scholarship would alleviate the financial burden I currently face as the oldest of four children. Not only would this scholarship reduce the financial strain on my family, but also enable me to concentrate more on creating art, my academics and extracurricular activities. I am certain I could explore opportunities that enhance my college experience. I am eager to participate in research projects, internships, and volunteer work that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to reach my goals.

Jeune-Mondestin Scholarship
Ever since childhood, I've been fascinated by how the mind works. This curiosity, combined with my passion for art, has driven me to pursue a degree in healthcare to become an art therapist. Art therapy is a powerful tool for healing and self-expression, and I am eager to contribute to this field as a woman in healthcare. Because of my past, I'm particularly passionate about advocating for the mental health of children and those with substance abuse disorders. I aim to provide a safe and creative space for them to explore their emotions and experiences, helping them find healing and empowerment. In addition to my academic pursuits, I'm committed to gaining practical experience in the field. At university, I'm in Morton Finney and hold an executive position on the Latino Student Union. Within Morton Finney, a DEI program, we heavily focus on mental health helping others who are struggling. Through service, we engage in our community hands-on. At LSU we collaborate with other organizations, such as SOCAH (students-of-color-allied-in-healthcare), to orchestrate events that spread awareness about mental health on a larger scale. These experiences have solidified my belief in the significance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need–reducing negative notions of seeking help. I also believe that representation matters, and as a Hispanic woman, I want to inspire others from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in healthcare. Long term, I aspire to work as an art therapist, focusing on underserved individuals. I want to develop programs that provide accessible art therapy and care, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to express themselves and heal. My goal is to create a more inclusive healthcare system where mental health is prioritized.

The woman walked past me, and I tried my best to not stare. My eyes followed her, however, as I marveled at her leg, for I'd never seen anything like it. Gray in color, designs seemed to be carved into it, creating an intricately unique look under her knee. Proudly showing off, she wore a skirt that complimented the color of her embellishment. Once I had mustered the courage to say something about how beautiful I found her to be, the woman was already gone. The image of her 3D-printed leg lives rent-free in my brain, a wondrous testament to the limitless possibilities of technology in making the world a better place. 3D printing inspires me in the way that it combines the creativity of art with the practicality of modern science and innovative technology. As one of the most transformative devices in the modern world, I'm beyond optimistic about the many ways that it can be implemented. 3D printing revolutionizes industries from healthcare to construction to manufacturing, the benefits only increasing as technology improves and matures over time. In terms of healthcare, 3D printing is particularly impressive and impactful. The medical field utilizes this new technology in several ways, ranging from personalized prosthetics to potential solutions for organ transplants, as well as mock parts for educational models. General prosthetics can be very expensive or even uncomfortable for those in need; 3D printing offers a solution--allowing for more affordable, custom-made products available. Catering specifically to the user's unique body type, 3D printing technology gives an incredible solution to a large problem in healthcare. 3D printing can also be used to create customized implants, such as dental implants or joint replacements tailored to the patient’s body. This reduces complications and possible need for adjustments post-surgery. Another compelling reason 3D printing is especially inspiring to me is its effect on the planet in terms of sustainability. Unlike traditional manufacturing, where things are made using one large piece, 3D printing builds by layer--in this way, waste is minimized. 3D printers also can print using recycled materials, including plastics, metal, and organic waste. This helps reduce the demand for new materials and minimize plastic waste. Some companies are using recycled ocean plastic to create 3D-printed products also. For these reasons and more, 3D printing is paving the way for a brighter, greener future with the possibility to alter nearly every aspect of human life.

My passion for mental health advocacy began early and has continued to evolve through my academic and extracurricular involvement. In high school, I participated in various organizations dedicated to mental health. My involvement in the Natural Helpers program was a transformative experience. Nominated by my peers for my ability to connect and support others, I attended a retreat that provided me with the tools to become a better listener, helper, and leader in my community. I realized that I could make a real impact, not only through formal therapy but also with everyday interactions rooted in kindness. This program, alongside my involvement in the Self-Care club, where we actively promoted mental health awareness, fueled my passion for mental health support and advocacy. I took the skills learned through these endeavors with me to university, where I'm majoring in psychology and sociology. I’m also a part of collegiate athletics, a DEI engagement program, and hold an executive position on the Latino Student Union–all of which nod to various aspects of mental health on a college campus. As an athlete pursuing a career in the mental health field, I see firsthand the mental challenges that come with being an athlete. Many girls on my team struggle with anxiety and other mental health conditions, and with the knowledge I have accumulated over time, I can help them the best I can. I have learned that even small gestures like lending a hand, listening, or directing someone to counseling services can make a difference. Within Morton Finney, the DEI program, we heavily focus on mental health and how we can help struggling others. Through service, we engage in our community, aiding hands-on. As part of LSU, we collaborate with other organizations, such as SOCAH (students of color allied in healthcare), planning events to spread awareness about mental health on a larger scale. These experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare, and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need–reducing negative notions of seeking help. By continuing to learn, raise awareness, and create supportive spaces for those struggling with mental health matters in my community, I strive to contribute to a tomorrow where individuals don’t have to be alone in their challenges. I look forward to assisting people from all walks of life and paving the way for future generations to be more open in the discussion of mental health.

The glass breaking came before the yelling, and I jolted awake. Wiping the sleep from my eyes, I wearily got out of bed. Sitting outside my door was my little sister, eyes round and luminous as the moon. It was apparent she had been crying, and together we went to see if my brothers were awake. My small feet getting lost in the leather, I trudged around in his large boots. Swimming in fire-resistant fabrics, I laughed at the excessive size difference between the clothes and my little hands. Growing up, I would frequent my father's fire stations with excitement and wonder. It was exhilarating to slide down the firefighter pole, play with the Dalmatian, and eat snacks the workers shared. I would get to sit in the firetruck and try on my dad's monstrous helmet. Often, I’d brag at school about the lives he saved, the ambulance he drove, and the splendor of securing the community that his job entailed. But, as I got older, I began to see the other side of his career and its toll on his mental health. While I admired his courage, I couldn’t ignore how his work had led to struggles with alcoholism and depression. It was during these formative years that I realized how deeply mental health affects a person’s well-being, and this understanding would shape my future. I avidly practice diversity, equity, and inclusion work in my life in several ways, many of which point back to the influence of my father. As a firefighter, he has instilled in me a strong desire to help others in need and to stand up for those who are unable to help themselves. Following his example, I make an effort every day to spread positivity and kindness to my peers. Being a public safety worker, it is in his nature and inherently mine to be the most welcoming and considerate person possible. I realized that I could make an authentic impact, not solely through formal therapy but also with everyday interactions rooted in kindness. My father’s compassion for others, despite his toils, signified its importance. Inspired by my experiences with my father, I decided to pursue a career in the mental health field. His struggles sparked a passion in me to understand its complexities and the copious ways it impacts those affected. I wanted to help people who were experiencing similar difficulties, offering them the empathy and support that I wish my father had during his rougher patches. These backgrounds led me to pursue a degree in psychology and sociology to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and create safe spaces for individuals facing mental health challenges; especially for those who may have a harder time accessing them due to marginalization, socioeconomic status, or health concerns. At university, I am now a part of athletics, a DEI engagement program, and hold an executive position on the Latino Student Union. As time went on, the excitement of visiting the fire station faded into the background, overshadowed by the complexities of my father's battle with alcoholism. The man who once seemed invincible was consumed with addiction, and our relationship grew strained. His struggles with alcohol were more than physical, straining his mental health. His depression worsened, causing moments of emotional distance that left me disjointed and resentful. Online ADHD Diagnosis Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Waking up most mornings, I take a minute to check in with myself. The chimes of my peaceful alarm ringing in my ear are a small comfort amid the chaos that often comes with balancing academics, athletics, and a personal commitment to mental health. Amidst the clutter of textbooks, running shoes, and other reminders of my busy schedule, I take a deep breath and remember why maintaining my well-being is a priority, despite the demands thrown at me from other obligations. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, often feeling isolated in his battle against PTSD. Over time, I realized how vital mental health is to well-being, and I became passionate about helping others with similar problems. This sparked my desire to pursue a career in psychology and sociology to advocate for mental health awareness. Now, as a college student, I am committed to not only understanding mental health on a deeper level but also taking implementable steps to create an environment of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity for others who may be facing similar difficulties. Understanding and speaking up about these topics will inform others, increase personal connection, and reduce stigmas surrounding the mental health community. It has been hard not to internalize my father’s mental health issues, carrying the emotional weight of his addiction with me throughout high school and into college. A student-athlete and active member of multiple campus organizations, I face unwavering pressure to perform academically, maintain my physical health, and engage socially. The weight of these responsibilities, in addition to the trauma I faced growing up, can affect my mental health from time to time. Due to these difficulties, there are times when anxiety or mental fog makes it hard to concentrate in class or be fully present during practice and other moments during my day. In the classroom, I’ve learned to manage my time and energy in more effective ways to me. On days when I struggle, it becomes harder to engage in class discussions or start assignments on time. Becoming more persistent about self-care practices, such as mindfulness exercises and regular study breaks, has helped me avoid burnout and stay dialed in on my coursework. I’ve also learned to reach out for support when needed, whether talking to a loved one or asking professors for further clarification on assignments. To further prioritize my mental health, I’ve developed routines that help me maintain balance. As an athlete, I aim to get enough sleep each night and eat nourishing foods, both of which directly correlate to my mood and energy levels. I also practice mindfulness exercises, such as breathing techniques to calm my nerves before stressful exams or races. However, the most significant step I’ve learned is asking for help. This can be through the support of my friends, resources offered here at university, or through the aid of my understanding coaches and professors. I’ve found that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but a crucial piece to maintaining one’s well-being. By implementing these strategies, I’ve found that I can better balance the demands of college both in and out of the classroom, athletics, and personal life much better. My concentration has improved as I’ve learned to manage my stress more effectively and feel closer to my team and peers. I’ve also become a more empathetic listener and support system for others, helping create a positive environment for those around me. These experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare, and ensuring that resources are accessible to people in need–reducing negative notions of seeking outside help.

Running has taught me to push through challenges and stay committed to my goals, qualities that I apply to my academic and personal life. In 2022, I had bi-lateral hip surgery to repair my torn labrums. Following nine months of intensive physical therapy, I emerged as my high school team’s top runner and qualified for the state meet. Due to my dedication and never ending persistence, I was awarded a D1 walk-on spot at Butler University. Unfortunately, this prestigious honor did not come with any athletic aide. I am also a participant in the Morton Finney Diversity Scholarship Program, which has provided me with invaluable resources and support. Moreover, I am honored to serve as the freshman chair of the Latino Student Union, where we foster a sense of community and support among Latino students. However, the financial aspect of attending a private university remains a significant challenge. This scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burden I currently face as the oldest of four children. The Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship would not only reduce the financial strain on my family, but also enable me to concentrate more on my academics and extracurricular activities. I am certain I would explore opportunities to further enhance my college experience. I am eager to participate in research projects, internships, and volunteer work that align with my aspirations to become an art therapist, and this scholarship would provide the much-needed support to pursue these opportunities.
Bright Lights Scholarship
Wind blowing through the curtains, I feel the morning sun on my face as I blink sleep from my eyes. I stand up and make myself tea, excited for another day ahead. Checking my busy schedule, I review notes from the day before and smile when thinking about how I ended up here — working my dream job, passionately helping others through the lens of an art therapist. Well… that’s the plan anyway. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, often feeling isolated in his battles. As a young girl, analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism profoundly influenced my way of thinking. Grasping for any kind of label I could put him under led me to explore psychology. Over time, I realized how vital mental health is to overall well-being, and I became passionate about helping others with similar problems. This sparked my desire to pursue a career in psychology and sociology. Now a college student, I am passionate and committed to understanding mental health on a deeper level and taking implementable steps to create an environment of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity for others who may be facing difficulties like my father. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am committed to gaining practical experience in the field. Currently a freshman at Butler University, I am a part of collegiate athletics, a DEI engagement program, and hold an executive position in the Latino Student Union. As a non-scholarship athlete pursuing a career in the mental health field, I see firsthand the struggles that come with being an athlete. Within Morton Finney, the DEI program, we heavily focus on mental health and how we can help others. Through community service work, we engage in our community to aid hands-on. As part of LSU, we collaborate with other organizations, such as SOCAH ( Students of Color Allied in Healthcare ), to plan events to spread awareness about mental health on a larger scale. All of these experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need — reducing negative notions of seeking outside help. Being able to fully immerse myself in and take advantage of all these invaluable experiences over the next several years makes me confident I will be able to make a difference in my community. It's my goal to attend graduate school to become an art therapist, combining two of my passions: art and psychology. I have always found peace and calm through art and am excited to show others how to utilize it as a path to healing. My father's condition and my love of art will prove to be beneficial in helping others through my unique lens. My father may have struggled, but through our shared journey, I found my purpose and calling. Two years sober and counting, my father continues to be an inspiration on my path to benefiting others from my experiences. This award would reduce my financial stress and allow me to focus on my studies, explore leadership roles within campus groups, continue to remain on the cross country and track teams, and experience internships and research opportunities in the mental health field. The Bright Lights Scholarship will be a key part of helping me reach my vision, follow my dreams, deepen my college education, and make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others around me.
Women in Healthcare Scholarship
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by how the mind works and how it affects our behavior and well-being. This curiosity, combined with my passion for art, has driven me to pursue a degree in healthcare with the goal of becoming an art therapist. I believe that art therapy is a powerful tool for healing and self-expression, and I am eager to contribute to this field as a woman in healthcare. Choosing to study psychology and art therapy was not just an academic decision for me; it was a personal one. Growing up, I watched my father struggle with alcoholism and depression, often feeling isolated in his battles. Over time, I realized how vital mental health is to overall well-being, and I became passionate about helping others with similar problems. This sparked my desire to pursue a career in psychology and sociology to advocate for mental health awareness in my community. I want to change that narrative by becoming an art therapist who is not only knowledgeable but also culturally sensitive. By doing so, I hope to bridge the gap between mental health services and the communities that need them the most. As a woman in healthcare, I am particularly passionate about advocating for women's and children’s mental health. Women often face unique challenges, such as balancing family responsibilities with career aspirations, which can impact their mental well-being. Through art therapy, I aim to provide a safe and creative space for women and children to explore their emotions and experiences, helping them to find healing and empowerment. In addition to my academic pursuits, I am committed to gaining practical experience in the field. At university I am a part of collegiate athletics, a DEI engagement program, and hold an executive position on the Latino Student Union. As an athlete pursuing a career in the mental health field, I see firsthand the mental challenges that come with being an athlete. Within Morton Finney, the DEI program, we heavily focus on mental health and how we can help others who are struggling. Through community service work, we engage in our community to aid hands-on. As part of LSU, we collaborate with other organizations, such as SOCAH (students of color allied in healthcare), to plan events to spread awareness about mental health on a larger scale. All of these experiences have solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare and ensuring that resources are accessible to those in need–reducing negative notions of seeking outside help. I also believe that representation matters, and as a Hispanic woman, I want to inspire others from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in healthcare. By sharing my journey and experiences, I hope to encourage young women to overcome barriers and follow their passion for helping others. In the long term, I aspire to work as an art therapist, focusing on underserved communities. I want to develop programs that provide accessible art therapy and mental health care, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to express themselves and heal. My goal is to create a more inclusive healthcare system where mental health is prioritized and treated with the same importance as physical health. The Women in Healthcare scholarship will help me to continue pursing Art Therapy at Butler University focusing on my academics and athletics without worry.
So You Want to Be a Mental Health Professional Scholarship
Wind blowing through the curtains, I feel the morning sun on my face as I blink sleep from my eyes. Towers of house plants adorn the apartment, with books littering any spare shelf. My cat walks across the room, pausing to stretch on a particularly sunny spot. I stand up and make myself tea, excited for another day ahead. Checking my busy schedule, I review notes from the day before and smile when thinking about how I ended up here–working my dream job, passionately helping others through the lens of an art therapist. Well…that’s the plan anyway. Now, as a college student, I am committed to understanding mental health on a deeper level and taking implementable steps to create an environment of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity for others. Understanding and speaking up about these topics will inform others, increase personal connection, and reduce stigmas surrounding the mental health community. At my high school, I actively participated in various organizations dedicated to mental health, such as Self Care Club and Natural Helpers. At Self Care Club, I aided in teaching and guiding other students on how they can practice care, prioritizing their mental health. I was also nominated to be in the Natural Helpers, an organization dedicated to being the best helper in a community one can be. Through this, I was trained to offer emotional support to my fellow students, being a person who could guide them on the path to healing. I took the skills learned through these endeavors to university, where I am now a part of collegiate athletics, a DEI engagement program, and hold an executive position on the Latino Student Union. As an athlete pursuing a career in the mental health field, I see firsthand the mental challenges that come with being an athlete. Many girls on my team struggle with anxiety and other mental health conditions, and with the knowledge I have accumulated over time, I can help them the best I can, according to training. I have learned that even small gestures like lending a hand and listening or directing someone to counseling services can make a difference. Ultimately, my goal is to foster an environment where mental health is treated with the same importance and recognition as other health concerns. By continuing to learn, raise awareness, and create supportive spaces for those struggling in my community, I strive to contribute to a future where people don’t have to be alone in their challenges. This scholarship will be a key part of helping me reach that vision, follow my dreams, deepen my college education, and make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others.

The glass breaking came before the yelling, and I jolted awake. Wiping the sleep from my eyes, I wearily got out of bed. Sitting outside my door was my little sister, eyes round and luminous as the moon. It was apparent she had been crying, and together we went to see if my brothers were awake. Huddled together, they looked up at me with trembling lips. “Want to have a sleepover?” I asked, a reassuring smile on my face. It is my goal to become an art therapist, combining two of my passions: art and psychology. My name is Alejandra Sierazy, and I am a first-year student at Butler University, majoring in psychology and sociology while minoring in art and political science. Having a Hispanic background, I am excited to be a part of the Latino Student Union and the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars program. My upbringing has instilled values such as the importance of family, hard work, and perseverance, which have guided me throughout my academic journey. Growing up, my family faced challenges due to my father's struggle with alcoholism. As a young girl, analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism profoundly influenced my way of thinking. Grasping for any kind of label I could put him under led me to psychology. After taking the AP class in high school, I was enamored with the psychological aspect of addiction--as well as all the mental illnesses and childhood experiences that led to it. I found that I have an affinity for the human mind and behavior, as I thoroughly enjoy picking apart why people do things. Seeing how to take care of my siblings during these difficult times influenced my decision to pursue a career in the mental health field. Working in a setting where I can assist other people, helping them get through the difficult times in their lives and growing from them through art is my dream. In 2022, I had double hip surgery to repair my torn labrums. It is my goal to become an art therapist, combining two of my passions: art and psychology. My future aspirations, though, are rooted in my past. As a young girl, analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism influenced my way of thinking about people, and I am very perceptive of others’ traits. I can effectively read one’s body language and offer aid to those I need. Constantly studying others in comparison to my father, I was eager to learn more. Grasping for any kind of label or explanation I could put him under led me to get into psychology. After taking the AP class in my junior year of high school, I was enamored with the psychological aspect of addiction--as well as all the mental illnesses and childhood experiences that led to it. Currently, attending Butler University, I am majoring in psychology and sociology, while also minoring in studio art and political science. In addition to my passion for mental health, I adore the arts. Ever since I could remember art was a huge part of my life. While in high school, I was part of a two year intensive IB art program where I created scores of art projects to be displayed at the end of the year. Being an artist and small business owner, I create meaningful pieces and enjoy seeing how others respond to certain works of art. While at Butler, I am able to take advantage of the multitude of opportunities offered. I am a varsity athlete running for both the cross country and track teams. Recently, I have been named first-year chair of the Latino Student Union where I help plan different events throughout the year. Participating in the Morton Finney Diversity Scholars program has also awarded me the ability to volunteer throughout campus and the surrounding neighborhood. After earning my undergraduate degree, I will attend graduate school to become a licensed art therapist. I look forward to having the knowledge to properly aid someone’s inner turmoil from both a psychological and artistic standpoint while helping them heal and cope with their life experiences and emotions. I believe that utilizing my past and what I have learned will make me effective in helping a wide variety of people. Two years sober and counting, my father continues to be an inspiration on my path to benefiting others from my experiences, acting upon kindness and aiding people from all walks of life.

Sprawled out and screaming on the ground, this was not how I had imagined the first time watching my little brother alone would go. He threw the knife he was holding against the wall, and promised he wouldn’t touch it again. After threatening to hurt me and then himself, he grabbed a kitchen knife and began to flail it around. Naturally, I responded calmly at first but soon charged at him. There was no way he was serious--he was nine! What would a nine-year-old have to worry about to that extent? My younger brother has a history of mental illness. Throughout our shared childhood, he struggled with how he saw himself and how he was supposed to behave. This combined with my father’s depression and alcoholism made for a family where mental illness was no taboo. I learned from a young age how to talk to my brother when he would have an episode, how to calm him down and get him to discuss his feelings. It was always something I was proud of--how well I could handle his breakdowns and encourage him to talk it out. As he has gotten older, he’s grown more distant and less reliant on my consolation when things go south. My experience of growing up alongside a sibling and parent who have mental illnesses has made me a more empathetic person, and I listen attentively to other people when they need help. As a young girl, analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism influenced my way of thinking about people, and I am very perceptive of others’ traits. Constantly studying my father, I was eager to learn more. Grasping for any kind of label I could put him under led me to get into psychology. Why was he like this? How could someone willingly destroy themselves and their family over and over again? Casting a wary eye on his behavior, I disdainfully would scour the internet for a plethora of articles, the library for books, and anything that could provide clarity on his condition. After taking AP Psychology in my junior year of high school, I was enamored with the psychological aspect of addiction--as well as all of the mental illnesses and childhood experiences that lead to it. I found that I have an affinity for the human mind and behavior, as I thoroughly enjoy picking apart why people do things. Accompanied by my love of art, I am pursuing becoming an Art Therapist, where I can assist other people, helping them get through the difficult times in their lives and growing from them. I want to help families like mine, children who don’t have older siblings to look out for them. Mental illness, whether it was in me, my siblings, or my parents, has affected my life drastically. I have learned the skills to be a great friend and greater sister. A forgiving daughter. My relationships are richer, and I hold a better understanding of what can be behind someone’s smile. Going through all that has fallen onto my family over the past 17 years drives me to help others with mental illnesses in the future. I believe that utilizing my past and what I have learned will make me effective in helping a wide variety of people. Two years sober and counting, my father continues to be an inspiration on my path to benefiting others from my experiences, acting upon kindness and aiding people from all walks of life.

Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My father is a first responder, working as both a firefighter and paramedic for twenty-four years. Growing up, I would frequent his stations filled with excitement and wonder. It was exhilarating to get to slide down the firefighter pole, play with the station’s Dalmatian Jake, and eat the snacks the workers shared. I’d get to sit in the firetruck and try on my dad’s monstrous boots, my small feet getting lost in the leather. In my eyes, my dad was a hero. I would brag at school about the lives he saved, the ambulance he drove, and the splendor of securing the community that his job entailed. What I did not comprehend yet at the time was the other side of his work--how seeing and doing all of these tasks affected him and many other service workers across the country. As I got older, it became clear to me that my father’s job had a negative impact on his life and mental health. Though I never noticed it when I was younger, it became impossible to ignore as time went on. His work at the station drastically changed him and caused my father to become an alcoholic. How he behaved and the instances that occurred as a result of this have greatly shaped me into who I am and what I want to be when I am older, helping my community. I took into my own hands the responsibility of shielding my siblings during this time. Over time, due to my father’s blunders, I became more compassionate and loving. I have grown in how I treat others, especially my family. Simple acts of planning my sister’s outfits and playing board games with my brother emphasized the importance of one’s relationship with their siblings. This is now applicable to all aspects of my life, as I am the friend that many people turn to when they need to talk to someone. My empathy and protective qualities make me more understanding of others, and create a comfortable environment for those around me. I pride myself in being a friend that anyone could lean on if they needed it, always ready to listen and offer help. My father, though our relationship strained at times, continued to teach me valuable lessons as a result of his work and deteriorating mental health. My father has instilled in me a strong desire to help others in need, and to stand up for those who are unable to help themselves. Following his example, I make an effort every day to spread positivity and kindness to my peers. He inspires me and reminds me frequently to lead by example and ensure everyone feels included. Being a public safety worker, it is in his nature and inherently mine to be the most welcoming and considerate person possible. This was evident to my school, and I was nominated to be a part of “Natural Helpers,” and go on a retreat in the fall. Nervous at first, this experience was unforgettable and a catalyst of change and personal growth. We were taught how to effectively help others. Through workshops, discussions, journaling, and more I was encouraged to become a better helper in my community, like my father. One integral part of Natural Helpers was the pillars--key points to being a better person. Utilizing these, I learned the essential skills to help not only those I knew but strangers as well. Coming back from the retreat I have a better sense of how to lead and assist others, which will be beneficial to my future in helping people in my community. It is praised for the kind of work many first responders deal with on a daily basis, yet it is hardly recognized and instead is marginalized by the effects that this work has on our public safety workers. The kinds of things they see and prevent, protect our communities from, and ensure, have driven me to go into the mental health field. It is my goal to help not only adults but children as well through the mental health industry. After earning my undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology I intend to go to graduate school and become a licensed art therapist. Assisting people from all walks of life, I will discern how to properly aid and help someone’s inner turmoils from both a psychological and artistic standpoint. By working collaboratively with people, I plan on helping others become their best, healthiest selves. My experiences with my father will aid in achieving my dream because of the knowledge I’ve acquired over a long period of time. His condition and my love of art will prove to be beneficial in becoming the best version of myself I can be, helping others through the lens of an art therapist. Working in art therapy with people in my community will foster self-esteem improvements, benefit mental health, and provide insight into personal issues. I look forward to working with all kinds of people, spreading kindness and understanding in the near future, with my father as an example. I hope to help people like him and embody his values in my future career through service and understanding. Now sober for almost two years after going to rehabilitation, his work as a community safety worker continues to influence my actions and behavior today. I am inspired by his compassion towards helping others and persistence in bettering himself and can only strive to be as impactful as him. This has influenced my future greatly and has caused me to pursue a future helping other people as my father does.

Assisting people from all walks of life, I will discern how to properly aid and help someone’s inner turmoils from both a psychological and artistic standpoint. In the next ten years, I see myself living in or near an urban area, and working as an art therapist for a reputable art museum or hospital. I will be in a gorgeous apartment filled with plants, helping people throughout the area heal and cope with their life experiences and emotions. I will continue to run my art business as a side hustle and spread diversity through iconography in my pieces. My experiences with my father will aid in achieving my dream because of the knowledge I’ve acquired over a long period of time. His condition and my love of art will prove to be beneficial in becoming the best version of myself I can be, helping others through the lens of an art therapist. I look forward to working with all kinds of people, spreading kindness and understanding in the near future.

A lot of things, it turned out. To this day, however, if he is distraught and being harmful to himself or others I’m always there to help him. My experience of growing up alongside siblings who have mental illnesses has made me a more empathetic person, and I listen attentively to other people when they need help. As a young girl, analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism influenced my way of thinking about people, and I am very perceptive of others’ traits. I can effectively read one’s body language and offer aid to those I need. Constantly studying others compared to my father, I was eager to learn more. Grasping for any kind of label or explanation I could put him under led me to get into psychology. Seeing how to take care of my siblings during these difficult times influenced my decision to pursue a career in the mental health field. I hope to go into a job where I can assist other people, helping them get through the difficult times in their lives and growing from them. I will benefit others from my experiences, acting upon kindness and aiding people from all walks of life.

Netflix and Scholarships!
While skimming through Netflix shows one may typically skip over the hidden gem Ugly Betty. Perusing the copious titles and flashy graphics, one could be inclined to stop upon seeing a wide, close-up view of her grin--shiny and toothy with braces. Her eyes squinting behind small, red glasses, it’s hard not to tilt your head and wonder if the woman on screen was purposefully dressed like a toddler who had gotten into their grandma’s closet. This toddler also had a mean pair of scissors, judging by the unkempt bangs that lay over Betty’s face. Her looks aside, Betty maintains her trademark smile, flashing the world with her confidence and determination. For many young Hispanic girls growing up in America, there wasn’t anyone in the media that they could look up to and see themselves in until recently. Besides Dora, Latina actresses/characters were uncommon in the mainstream. There weren’t Hispanic household names for people to recognize besides stereotypical side roles. Latina actresses found it very difficult to find work that wasn't essentially the same, static character. Watching Ugly Betty my mom and other women across America were able to see themselves represented on screen for the first time. Betty looked like us, dreamed like us, and had families like ours. Ugly Betty gives a face to the thousands of women of color in America chasing their dreams--and taking strides to achieve them. If the promise of inclusion and diversity isn’t enough to sway you, Ugly Betty is made up of the most loveable and endearing characters I have seen. From Betty’s loving family to her exuberant coworkers, Ugly Betty captivates audiences young and old with its characters and their relationships. Here we have a young Latina woman who chases her dreams working at a posh fashion magazine. Sticking out at times like a sore thumb, Betty allows her differences to shine. She emphasizes her unique qualities rather than hiding them, as she is proud of her heritage and who she is. Her coworkers Mark and Amanda, who may or may not be the original mean girl/gay best friend duo, are hilariously comedic. Never failing to make me laugh, we as viewers can see their respect for Betty increase as the show goes on--although they never really stop picking on her. Betty is the new assistant for Daniel Meade of Mode (think Vogue, very flashy). Mode is a high-end fashion magazine and Betty does not fit in. Nepo baby Daniel has a risque reputation, which is why Betty is brought in. Her distasteful appearance, Daniel’s father hoped, would kick his son in the arse and cause him to start taking his job seriously. Betty’s family brings warmth to the screen with her flamboyant nephew and bold sister. Betty continues to live with them and her father, who is an immigrant from Mexico. Viewers are given a flawed character, Betty Suarez. She is not remarkable in any way--as she is an average girl from Queens. What makes Ugly Betty so emotionally captivating is that although she is deemed “average” she is the main character. She is desired and has romances. Her Latina-ness isn’t exaggerated to fit a role, and she is content with herself. She leads the story, taking charge of her life and finding ways to make her dreams come true. There is much to learn from Betty, which is why I’ve found myself rewatching it for the fourth time. Oh--also there’s murder, novelas, mystery, glamour, and some of the most gut-wrenching plot twists in television history. Please give it a watch if you find yourself having time. Click on the braces.
McClendon Leadership Award
I am going to be amazing, I told myself. This is a good idea. Putting in the extra work will truly make me stand out. Being a freshman cross-country runner, I was accustomed to hard work and pain. However, the pain that I had been used to was nothing compared to what I was setting myself up to endure in the future. Constantly overtraining, I would go home and run an extra two miles after every day of practice. At first, this was new, exciting, and hard work. It wasn't before long that I began to feel the extra few miles a little more than I should. Ignoring the ache, I continued to train hard. With every wince of pain, I continued to assure myself that it was only making me stronger and the team would see me as such. It started to become hard to run, let alone walk. I began to have to miss meets on account of my hip pain, which resulted in my absence from the varsity post-season. In the spring of my freshman year, I was diagnosed with bilateral hip tears. Regardless, I was going to keep running. Surgery wasn’t always required for things like this. All of the extra training I pushed through did more harm than good. I was eventually shut down two years later, due to my hips, and would have to miss out on my junior year’s track season. This detrimental mistake, training incorrectly, has given me insight into how to change and grow my skill in many ways and lead others in preventing damaging injuries. After going through my second recovery, I know now more than ever the importance of taking care of myself and not overtraining. Now that I can run again, it is my top priority to maintain my health and help the team in any way that I can. A senior in cross country now, the underclassmen look up to me as an experienced team leader. My mistakes in the past influenced my actions in the future. If I had not made this mistake I would have just continued to run, without ever learning my lesson on the importance of self-care and consistency. Because of all that has happened, I take great care of my body. I am allowing myself to heal and look forward to change. Now that I am healed I have a newfound insight into running and taking care of oneself, which I impliment in leadership on my team. Leadership to me is leading by example and displaying qualities such as perseverance, determination, and kindness. Through my experience running on a severe injury for three years, I have clarity on what is right for an athlete's body and I use it now to lead the team. Aiding freshmen with their runs and injury prevention are two ways I help with leadership. I show them what is important to do in order to maintain a healthy body while in training. Underclassmen come to me with questions regarding their aches and pains, which my coach and I asses. Each day I strive to lead my team effectively, utilizing my knowledge of running and healing to help the other girls. Taking my time to stretch, foam roll, and do strengthening work--I lead by example and inspire others to take time and listen to their bodies. Earning the title of team captain this year, I work to be a role model for the girls on my cross-country team. Leadership is something I work towards both on and off-season, creating a relationship between my teammates and me.

Wiping the drowsiness from our eyes, we sipped virgin mojitos and continued to work late into the night. The taste of lime was sweet on my lips and I blinked the sleep away. My mother and I worked well into the evening on products for the market tomorrow, ensuring everything looked perfect. Thinking about how lucky I am to have her, we continued our assembly line of craft making. My mother is the most influential person in my life due to her work ethic, determination, and unconditional love. Continuously showering me with support, she has stood by my side and is always there for me to lean on. Though we do not always agree, she is now my closest friend as I have gotten older. A mother of four kids, my mom finds the time to teach and run her own business--which she has done for over eleven years. Pushing me to reach my fullest potential, I look up to her as a person and an entrepreneur. She has taught me so much about managing a business and embracing my creativity. Helping me find my footing, I would never have been able to start my shop without her. My mother ensured that my siblings and I would have a better life than she did growing up, adorning my childhood with experiences I’ll remember forever. I’d run to her car after class let out, giggling in anticipation of telling her about my day. Even today, whenever anything happens---good or bad--she is always the first one that I want to tell. Her eyes widening as I restate news, her smiles when I crack a joke; it is so reassuring looking in the mirror and seeing more of her in me as I grow. I can only hope that one day I become as successful and beautiful as she is. Her guiding hand continues to influence me each day. My mother taught me how to have resilience above everything. The copious amounts of things she has accomplished despite what was going on separately are astounding, and I have so much respect for her. What may have seemed insurmountable she proved wrong--taking care of her four kids and running a business amidst the other problems going on in her life. While my father was away in rehab to better himself for a month my mom didn't let it falter her efficiency and way of life. She continued to take my siblings and I to our activities, work on her business, and make our meals. It kept me steady and hopeful seeing her persevere despite my father's absence. Now that he has returned, she maintains her loving guidance and inspires me to remain positive during turmoil. I try to act in the ways she would in certain situations, responding with grace and awareness of others. I hope to become more like her as I age--both in resilience as well as kindness.

The glass breaking came before the yelling, and I jolted awake. Wiping the sleep from my eyes, I wearily got out of bed. Sitting outside my door was my little sister, eyes round and luminous as the moon. It was apparent she had been crying, and together we went to see if my brothers were awake. Huddled together under old sheets, they looked up at me with trembling lips. “Want to have a sleepover?” I asked, a reassuring smile on my face. My father is an alcoholic. This has been the greatest driving force in my life, as it has influenced the way I live my life. The sporadic damaging instances of substance abuse in my family scattered across my childhood have shaped me into who I am, but they do not define me. Not being able to control my father--how he treated others, and himself–drove me to have an affinity for things I could manage such as my grades, extracurriculars, schedule, diet, and relationships. I could control how hard I trained in track and cross-country, earning varsity positions for both. I could keep myself busy with the National Honors Society and IB Art. I could control my success, creating a business for myself that would highlight to everyone how creative and entrepreneurial I was. Most importantly, I could control how my siblings perceived my father and how they grew up. I didn't want them to have the view that I did on him, to write the things I wrote in my journals, or to find the bottles I found haphazardly. A box under my desk held plastic containers of that poison I had found strewn about the house, kept hidden so my siblings wouldn’t stumble upon one. I’d have “sleepovers” with them whenever we could hear yelling from downstairs, distracting them from the glass shattering and door slamming. Reading stories to my siblings and playing games during times of turmoil, I desperately shaped the childhood I would have wanted for myself. The oldest of four, I always felt it my responsibility to be the “parent” when things went south. Having to grow up quickly, it was always me who found the light in an otherwise bleak situation. Watching my siblings’ expressions change from fear to joy reassured me that I was doing a good job and that they would have more positive memories of times that I now recall with my jaw clenched. Growing up analyzing my father’s tendencies and alcoholism influenced my way of thinking about people, and I am very perceptive of others’ traits. Now sixteen months sober, I could not be more proud of my father. Although he is a new man, the scars still run deep. I will continue to apply what I have learned about people and love in all aspects of my life, paving a new road of forgiveness for my siblings and me.
Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
Small hands poking at my legs, I heard an eruption of laughter before I went to chase them around. An army of six-year-olds bolted in the opposite direction, their giggles chiming in my ears. Running through the woods, I pretended I was too slow to catch them and fell to my knees, smiling along with the preschoolers. The eldest of four, I have always found it my responsibility to be the third "parent" of the house. Influencing my thoughts, actions, and life, children have persistently been at the epicenter of my time. Whether it was working at a children's summer camp, babysitting, or teaching swim lessons--I love working with kids. Striving to be the best older sister I can be, I work every day to spend time with my siblings and make them feel special. As someone without an elder sibling, I understand how hard it can be at times when one doesn't have an adolescent role model to look up to. Through my volunteering work with kids, I try to emulate the feeling of having an older sister to confide in. Befriending the children at my work, I laugh along and talk to them while they play. Holding their hands on hikes and painting their faces at events brings me so much joy to get one to crack a smile. The importance of having a positive role model one can confide in is very important, as many children grow up lacking someone like this. Role models provide children with guidance, inspiration, and comfort--encouraging them to strive to be the best versions of themselves. Comfort is a very integral factor of development in my opinion, and I carry with me the intent to be someone who people can feel comfortable around. Through my volunteer work at a local preschool, I am able to build meaningful relationships with children who may not have already had someone to confide in. Utilizing both what I have learned from being an older sister and working with children in the past, I lead by example and create a comfortable environment for younger kids to express their emotions effectively. This has provided me with copious amounts of practice speaking with children and helping them handle how they are feeling while interacting with others and their environment. I apply what I have learned from all of my endeavors to other pursuits, all of which are intertwined. Volunteering at a preschool helps me understand children's mood swings when I'm babysitting. Doing a run club with my younger cousin influences how I talk to kids while I teach swim lessons. Playing games with my siblings gives me an idea of how different age demographics of kids will react to activities at the summer camp where I work. All of my related activities regarding children entwine together to aid in my knowledge of working with kids. In the future I plan to major in psychology and use my degree to help children of all ages better handle their emotions in a more positive manner. My experiences from volunteering at a local preschool impacted my life goals, as I found how much I enjoy helping kids learn and feel comfortable talking about difficult things. Making use of my background in working with adolescents, I hope to one day be able to apply my knowledge in a professional setting--doing what I love and creating a safe space for all children.
Barbie Dream House Scholarship
The aroma of fresh crepes woke me up, and I rolled out of bed in an instant frenzy. Made fresh every morning, this was just one of the many perks of my perfect Barbie dream house. Adorned in whipped cream and strawberries, I would stuff my face each morning with whatever food I desired. The pantry would be a room rather than a closet, and would contain all the ingredients from my favorite cuisines. The table would stretch long and have many chairs for all of my family to sit around. Each day we’d prepare luxurious meals and gaze out of the veranda. Overlooking a vast countryside, the large french windows would be open every morning to let the light in. Long, white curtains blow in the wind. This perfect house would have a plethora of different plant species living within of its walls. Pothos would creep down railings, with spider plants dropping from the ceiling. I’d have a massive library with every book I’ve ever read or had the intention of reading. The bookcases would reach the ceiling and have a ladder that swings around. In my Barbie dream house I’d lounge on my plush emerald green chairs. Gold embellishments would furnish small spaces around the home. Doorknobs, archways, and handles would have small intricate designs on them—done by me. I’d have an art studio where I’d have room to actually hang all my work. There would be music playing, with a grand piano by the main entrance. Within the dream house I’d have a few cats prowling around, who would stare longingly at the fish in my aquatic tank. Species of all kinds would swim around, and I would be able to go inside too. Floating alongside my favorite sea turtles, I’d be able to take a dip whenever I like. Outside of the Barbie dream house would be a garden lush with wildflowers and plants to attract pollinators. Each day I’d be greeted with wildlife flying around the yard. Gorgeous butterflies would lay eggs on the milkweed for my mom to find. There would be a large greenhouse, in which all of my vegetables would be kept. Fruit trees would grow tall, so tall that I would be able to pick fresh peaches and plums from my balcony upstairs. A old spiral staircase leads to the roof, as I would go up here to gaze at the stars. Up there scattered to the side are solar panels, which generate energy for the whole house. On the other side of the roof would be a gigantic telescope. When the sky is clear and my favorite celestial bodies are visible I would invite my friends and family to come view the night sky with me. Looking into the telescope I’d map out my favorite constellations and sketch them the next day in my studio. Taped drawings and paintings of my work would clutter the walls and make it feel more homey. When I need to wind down I’d find myself back in the kitchen. This barbie dream house contains a separate cabinet dedicated to tea. The finest earl greys from Europe and green teas from Japan would always be in stock within my own home. I’d stroke my kitten named Beans as I sip tea and grow sleepy under the glow of all my candles. Blowing them each out I would head to my queen sized bed and snuggle up among my pile of stuffed animals. The Barbie dream house would go silent, but the sound of crickets and trees blowing in the wind would lull me to sleep.
