I came to the US when I was 14 years old without knowing any English. I still remember my first day of freshman year and how scared I was. I did not understand anything the teacher said during class. For the first 6 months, this was my everyday life. I went to class, sat in the last seat and try to catch any words I knew and make sense of the lecture. Every time we had a test I would memorize word by word without understanding them. Eventually, I was able to learn English and even though my accent was still bad and people would make fun of me when I made mistakes, I did not give up on my studies. I gave my best to keep my grades up and I was still able to graduate as class president with a 4.0 GPA. One of my biggest worries now is not being able to afford college. It has always been really hard for my parents to give me the financial support I need. Since we are not legal citizens of the US we are not allowed to work in jobs that provide us with the necessary resources. It has also been hard for me to attend school since I do not receive any help from the government. I believe that God has a plan and He will make a way for me to attend school and be able to graduate as a nurse. Every time I feel like giving up, I look back to my freshman year of high school and how much I have grown since then. I never gave up on my studies even when it seemed impossible for me. When I started college, I made the decision to stay in school no matter the circumstances, which is why I have worked the limit of hours I am allowed to in school while I also babysit and clean houses. I am currently in the nursing program which will be starting this fall. It has always been my dream to be a nurse and help those in need. I one day want to become a missionary nurse and travel to those places that need help. It is my wish to one day help students that struggle like I do. My name is Alejandra and I and currently a freshman in college. I grew up in a small town in Colombia, South America. Taylor Swift was not as popular and known as she is here in the US. The only songs that I had heard was “Shake it off” and “You Belong With Me”. At the moment I did not know English so I was not able to understand what the songs where talking about. It was all about the her rhythm, which I really liked in both songs. When I got to America, I was introduced to a whole new world of Taylor Swift. I met a girl in high school that was obsessed with Taylor Swift and she could listen to her songs all day long. One day, as we were driving home after a rough day in school. She played the same song I heard back in Colombia, “Shake it off”, and I was surprised of how I could understand every word she is saying. I started crying because it felt like a big accomplishment for me. I went from not understanding a word she was saying to being able to sing along with it. The song soon became my daily inspiration. Every time life hit me I would just sing “players gonna play play play and haters gonna hate hate hate but I’m just going to shake shake shake”. Taylor has amazing song with amazing meanings (she basically has a song for every relationship situation). But Shake it off will always be my favorite song, not only from her “1989” album, but from al the albums. I know most people find it stupid or too repetitive, but I will never get tired of it. I am happy to call myself a “swiftly”. I now know almost every single one of her songs. I was so happy to be able to go to her concert this past month. Even though it was probably one of the farthest spots in the whole concert, seeing her perform all of the most popular songs (including shake it off) was like a dream for me. I went with my friend from high school. And we sang out heart out. I was very surprised when I saw this scholarship online. Hello, my name is Alejandra Camacho. I am from Colombia but I came to the US 4 years ago as an international student. My plan is to continue my studies in the US next fall to become a nurse. However, the only way I can do that is with the help of scholarships and grants since it is impossible for my parents to afford having me here. Throughout my high school years I have worked very hard and currently have a 4.0 GPA. Every day when I wake up I tell myself, “today I’m going to be my best and give my best”. I started this a couple of years ago. It started mainly for school and grades, but later on I added 2 words at the end, “for others”. And ever since then it has become my quote of the day, what keeps me going every morning. I am very passionate about helping others with all their needs, and I could say my dad was the one who inspired me to do this. When I was little we never had much to share with others. But every chance my dad got, he gave his best to help those in need, even with something so small as a meal. He taught me that there is always someone who is going through something worse than you are, and that we should always be thankful for all the small things life has given us. He made me the person I am today. My dad also played a big part on my career choice. One day, as I was thinking about what I wanted to be in life, he asked me one question that I will never forget, “who do you want to help the most?” And I think this is a question everyone should ask themselves before choosing their career. This has helped me appreciate more the small things of life and specially all the work my parents have done so that I can be successful. I plan to start college next year to become a nurse. However, this was not always my plan. For a very long time I wanted to become a preschool teacher, so I decided to volunteer at a elementary school. The first day I did it I realized that it was not the job for me. The next day one of the little girls got sick, since this school was very small they didn’t have a nurse or someone to take care of her. With my little knowledge about kids sicknesses I stayed with her the rest of the day, doing my best to make her feel better. That was the day I realized that I had a passion not only for kids but also to help them feel better. And ever since then I’ve known that my call is to be a nurse. Many people tell me I’m doing it because of the money or because is what everyone else is doing, but for me helping others is what I enjoy, and having the knowledge to do it in a bigger way it’s just an amazing job to do. I want to become a nurse so I can help the tiny humans. My main goal is to go to Africa as a missionary to help those in need, specially the kids. For many of us is hard to look at our qualities. Instead we focus on our failures. For many years this is how I felt, like I had nothing good to give to this world. Later on I realized that maybe I didn’t have A LOT of qualities or things to offer but that should not stop me from doing and giving my best to help others— and that became what I think is my biggest quality. Every morning when I wake up I tell myself, “Today I’ll do my best and give my best”. I started doing this about 2 years ago when I got a Resident Assistant job, at first that’s all it was for, helping my residents. However the more I said it the more I applied it to other parts of my life. Giving my best for others became everything in my life. I am probably not the most selfless person there’s is on the world. But there’s one think I do know— when I help others I am happy. When I think about my future I see myself traveling to Africa on missionary trips as a nurse and helping those around me. However I always thought I would do it as a teacher but my plans have changed a little lately but my goal is still the same. I want to help those in need/pain. If I get this scholarship I will do my best and give my best to give back what has been given to me— a chance. A chance of a better life, and I would do that by helping those little ones that might not have a voice or someone to be there for them. Being a Nurse requieres a lot of patience, kindness and strength, but i could say that the most important one is passion. Nurses are always the first person a patients sees in the morning when they are in a lot of pain. They need someone to smile at them, care about them, ask them how they feel, etc. And only a passionate person can deal with the grumpiness, dislike, and bad attitudes of some patients. For many years I was certain that I was going to be a elementary school teacher. I loved kids and being around them brought me joy. My parents suggested that I tried it first to see if it was what I really wanted, so I decided to volunteer as an assistant teacher to see what the job was really about. After a couples of weeks I realized that it was not a match for me I still loved kids but being in a classroom and teaching them was not what I saw myself doing in the future. However, I also realized that whenever a kid got sick I always wanted to help them feel better. I had learned some tricks from my mom for some of the common sickness like stomach or head aches and always tried my best for them to get a little better while their parents came to pick them up from school. So I started doing some research and some personality test to decide if it was a good fit for me. Working with kids is my passion and I also have discovered that medicine is my passion as well. The fact that I can combine those 2 together and make something great out of it is just amazing. I want to work helping little kids and become a pediatric nurse. I also think that many other countries are in need for people to work with sick kids. My dream has always been to go to Africa as a missionary and I believe that being a pediatric nurse would be very helpful in a place like that. I understand that being a nurse is hard because you see people died everyday but I believe that the joy of saving a life is much greater and makes this job one of the most important ones. Coming from a low income household has taught me to appreciate small things more. Sure, it hard sometimes but it teaches you to have trust. It also brings you closer to your family in times of need and helps you be a better person after those hard times.
