I believe education is one of the most powerful tools for change, not only for building careers, but for strengthening communities. I’m passionate about learning, and using what I’ve learned to help others. When challenges come my way, I don’t back down, I want to rise and meet them. My goal is to continue my education, create opportunities for myself, and build a stable future for my family. I can relate to this. I have faced moments of stress, self-doubt, and pressure while balancing school, work, and personal responsibilities. These experiences have taught me that mental health is just as important as physical health and deserves attention. Learning how to recognize when I am overwhelmed and when I need to reset has helped me grow into a more self-aware and balanced person. But the challenges are new everyday. One challenge I face daily is living with hyperhidrosis. While this condition is physical because it causes excessive sweating, it also affects mental and emotional well-being. Social interactions that may seem simple to others, such as shaking hands, meeting new people, speaking in front of others, or making a first impression, can create extra anxiety. There have been times when I worried more about how others would perceive me than focusing on the actual conversation or opportunity in front of me. This has shown me how closely physical conditions and mental health can be connected. Although hyperhidrosis has been difficult, it has also taught me resilience. Through conversations with my doctor, treatment options, and learning how to prepare for stressful situations, I have gained more confidence in handling challenges that once felt overwhelming. Instead of allowing fear or embarrassment to control my decisions, I have learned the importance of adapting, staying prepared, and continuing to put myself in situations that help me grow. These experiences have shown me that confidence is often built by facing discomfort rather than avoiding it. My experiences with mental health have also shaped my beliefs about other people. I have learned that many struggles are invisible, and someone may be carrying stress, anxiety, or personal battles that others cannot see. Because of this, I believe kindness, patience, and empathy are essential. A simple act of understanding can have a lasting impact on someone who may be struggling silently. This perspective has made me more thoughtful in the way I treat others and more willing to listen without judgment. In relationships, these lessons have helped me value honesty and trust. Strong relationships are built when people feel comfortable being themselves and supported during difficult times. Because I understand what it feels like to carry internal stress, I try to be someone others can rely on and talk to openly. Whether in friendships, family, or professional settings, I believe communication and compassion create stronger connections. These experiences have also influenced my career aspirations. I plan to pursue a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing at Indiana University Columbus because I enjoy creativity, communication, and connecting people with meaningful ideas. In my future career, I hope to work in environments that value people as individuals and recognize that everyone brings strengths beyond the challenges they face. I also hope to help create positive workplaces where employees feel respected, motivated, and supported. My experiences with mental health have given me a deeper understanding about empathy, and personal growth. They have shown me that challenges can shape character and build strength. As I continue my education and work toward my future goals, I am committed to carrying these lessons with me and trying my best to make a positive impact wherever I go.
    Dream BIG, Rise HIGHER Scholarship
Hello, my name is Alechi McClellan. Education has shaped my goals and given me a sense of direction that reaches far beyond classroom knowledge. It has given me discipline, confidence, and a clear vision for the future I want to build. A phrase I often hear at home is, “Continue your education past high school,” usually alongside the quote written on our kitchen chalkboard by my mom: “Chance favors the prepared.” Growing up in a home rooted in faith, perseverance, and hard work, I was taught that success is not measured only by income or titles, but by purpose, character, and service to others. Those values have deeply influenced the person I am today and the goals I now pursue. Throughout high school, education has extended beyond textbooks and assignments. It has taught me leadership, teamwork, and responsibility through my involvement in school, church, athletics, and community service. I serve as a lead guitarist in my church youth group, where I was selected during my sophomore year to help lead worship. Learning music, practicing consistently, and performing in front of others has strengthened my confidence and discipline. It has also shown me the importance of using my abilities to encourage and inspire others. Being trusted with that responsibility taught me how preparation and consistency can create opportunities. I have also served as a Youth Council Member with the City of Seymour since my freshman year. Through this experience, I have gained valuable insight into local government and how community leaders work to solve problems and improve daily life for residents. Being involved in meetings, volunteer events, and discussions about the future of my city has shown me that leadership is about service, not status. It has inspired me to become someone who contributes positively wherever I am planted. Seeing how decisions at the local level impact families and neighborhoods has helped me appreciate the importance of civic involvement. Community service has also shaped my sense of purpose. During United Way’s Day of Caring, I helped an elderly couple with yard work and cleanup. I also volunteered at a Thanksgiving outreach event serving families, veterans, and individuals in need. These experiences reminded me how meaningful simple acts of service can be. They taught me gratitude and reinforced my desire to use my future career to help others, not just myself. Service has shown me that success becomes more meaningful when it benefits the people around you. One of the most influential experiences in shaping my goals was my summer internship with the City of Seymour. During that internship, I helped create marketing campaigns for city events, social media promotions, and public awareness videos. Through that hands-on opportunity, I discovered how much I enjoy combining creativity with strategy. It showed me the power of communication and branding to connect people with valuable resources and opportunities. Because of this experience, I plan to pursue a degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing and brand development. I want to learn how businesses grow, how audiences think, and how strong messaging can make a lasting impact. One challenge I have had to overcome is the financial barrier of higher education. My family has always worked hard and carefully budgeted to provide what we need, but the rising cost of college is more than we can manage alone. Rather than allowing that challenge to discourage me, it has motivated me to work harder, seek scholarships, and remain focused on my future. I understand that obstacles do not define a person—how they respond to them does. This challenge has made me more determined to value every educational opportunity I receive. My goal is to become a digital marketing manager who helps businesses grow while creating meaningful connections with their communities. I want to use my education to build a stable future for myself, support my family, and become the first person in my family to earn a college degree. Beyond that, I hope to mentor younger students and show them that their circumstances do not limit their potential. I want others to see that dedication, faith, and education can open doors that once seemed out of reach. Education has shaped my goals by turning preparation into purpose. It has shown me that knowledge creates opportunity, service creates impact, and perseverance creates results. With continued education, I know I can create a better future not only for myself, but for those around me. I am committed to making the most of every opportunity, continuing to grow as a leader, and using what I learn to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Thank you for considering my application. Alechi McClellan
    Valerie Rabb Academic Scholarship
Hello, my name is Alechi McClellan. I am 18 years old and a senior at Sandy Creek Christian Academy. I am an individual committed to personal growth, future leadership, and making a meaningful impact in my life and local community. My experiences, both personal and professional throughout high school, have shaped my goals, strengthened my character, and influenced the way I approach relationships and challenges. A challenge I continue to face is living with hyperhidrosis. It is a physical condition that can also create emotional stress in social and professional situations. Simple interactions such as meeting new people, giving presentations, or even shaking hands can carry added pressure. While this once discouraged me from fully engaging in social settings, I chose to maintain a positive outlook and continue pursuing opportunities to grow and learn. With guidance from my doctor, treatment, and learning how to plan ahead, I have regained confidence this year and know I can achieve what I set out to accomplish. Overcoming this challenge has strengthened my resilience and taught me how to adapt, persevere, and keep moving forward despite discomfort. These experiences have also shaped the way I view others. I have come to understand that many people face struggles that are not always visible, and that empathy can make a meaningful difference. Because of this, I strive to be understanding and supportive in my relationships. I believe strong connections are built on trust, compassion, and a willingness to truly listen. Growing up in a home centered on faith and dedication, I was taught that success is not defined by status, but by character, compassion, and the ability to uplift others. This foundation has led me to actively serve my community. As a member of the Seymour City Hall Youth Council, I contributed to initiatives that promoted community involvement. I also had the opportunity to intern with the City of Seymour during the summer of 2024, where I assisted with marketing campaigns and social media posts for local events. Additionally, through my church, I served as lead guitarist for the youth worship band, where I mentored younger students and encouraged them to grow in confidence. These experiences showed me the power of leadership through service and the impact of bringing people together. Professionally, I plan to pursue a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing at Indiana University Columbus. I enjoy being creative and using ideas to solve problems. Through marketing, I hope to help businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations grow, reach wider audiences, and better serve others. I want to work in environments that value both my skills and my character. The challenges I have faced do not define my limitations, but instead demonstrate my perseverance. Personally, my goal is to continue growing into someone who leads with heart and enjoys meaningful work. I am committed to learning, building strong relationships, and using my experiences to help others. I want to create environments where people feel valued, understood, and empowered. This scholarship will play a vital role in helping me achieve these goals by reducing the financial burden of my education. With this support, I will be able to focus more fully on my studies without the constant stress of financial limitations. It will allow me to invest in my future and continue developing the skills necessary to make a positive impact. Ultimately, my goal is to use my education to become a better leader and build a strong foundation for a successful career. Thank you for considering my application.

Living with Hyperhidrosis has affected many aspects of my daily life, from social situations to professional environments. Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating beyond what is necessary for normal body temperature regulation. While it may seem like a minor issue to some, it can create challenges in everyday interactions, confidence, and comfort in situations where first impressions and communication matter. Over time, however, facing this condition has helped me develop resilience, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of perseverance. One of the most difficult parts of living with hyperhidrosis is that it is often an invisible challenge that others may not fully understand. Simple tasks such as shaking hands, handling paper, or participating in presentations can require extra preparation and awareness. In school and professional settings, where confidence and presentation play an important role, managing this condition has required me to remain calm, organized, and focused despite moments of discomfort. Instead of allowing these situations to discourage me, I have learned to approach them with preparation and determination. These experiences have shaped my character in positive ways. Living with hyperhidrosis has taught me patience and problem-solving skills, as well as the importance of staying confident even when facing personal challenges. It has also strengthened my ability to adapt to different environments and remain focused on my goals. Balancing personal health challenges with academic responsibilities has pushed me to develop strong discipline and persistence, qualities that will continue to serve me throughout my education and career. Looking toward the future, my goal is to build a career that allows me to make a positive impact in my community while continuing to grow professionally. I am currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing at Indiana University Columbus. Marketing interests me because it combines creativity, strategy, and communication. I enjoy understanding how organizations connect with people and how effective communication can help businesses build trust and create meaningful experiences for their audiences. In the future, I hope to use my skills in marketing to help organizations communicate responsibly and build strong relationships with the communities they serve. My experiences with hyperhidrosis have taught me that challenges do not define a person’s potential. Instead, they can encourage growth, resilience, and empathy. Because of this perspective, I strive to approach both my education and future career with determination and a positive mindset. Ultimately, living with hyperhidrosis has strengthened my character and helped me develop perseverance in the face of obstacles. While the condition presents challenges, it has also motivated me to continue pushing forward toward my goals. Through my education, personal growth, and future career, I hope to demonstrate that determination and resilience can transform personal challenges into opportunities for growth and success.

The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson and based on the novels by J. R. R. Tolkien. While many people enjoy the film for its epic fantasy story and incredible world-building, the deeper themes of courage, perseverance, and friendship have influenced how I view challenges and opportunities in my own life. One of the most meaningful lessons from the film is that ordinary individuals are capable of making an extraordinary difference. The main character, Frodo Baggins, is not a powerful warrior or a famous leader. Instead, he is a humble hobbit who accepts the responsibility of carrying the One Ring because he knows it is the right thing to do. His willingness to take on such a heavy burden, even when he feels uncertain or afraid, reminds me that leadership often begins with simple courage and responsibility. Watching his journey taught me that you do not have to be the strongest or most experienced person to make a meaningful impact—you simply need the determination to keep going. Another powerful theme in the movie is the importance of friendship and support. Frodo’s journey would not have been possible without the loyalty and encouragement of Samwise Gamgee and the other members of the Fellowship. Their willingness to stand by one another during difficult moments highlights how important teamwork and trust are when facing challenges. This idea resonates with me because throughout my own life I have learned that success rarely happens alone. Whether in school, work, or community involvement, having supportive people around you can make even the most difficult goals achievable. The film also emphasizes perseverance. The road to destroy the Ring is long, dangerous, and filled with setbacks, yet the characters continue forward because they believe their mission is important. This message has encouraged me during my own educational journey. As someone currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing at Indiana University Columbus, I understand that achieving long-term goals requires patience, discipline, and the ability to keep pushing forward even when obstacles arise. Finally, The Lord of the Rings reminds viewers that individual actions can contribute to something much larger than themselves. The characters fight not for personal gain, but for the future of their world and the well-being of others. That message has influenced how I approach my own goals. I hope to use my education to help organizations communicate effectively, build stronger relationships with their communities, and create positive change. For me, The Lord of the Rings is more than just a movie. It is a story that continues to inspire me to approach life with courage, perseverance, and a commitment to making a difference, even when the journey ahead may seem challenging.

My name is Alechi McClellan, and I am a graduating senior pursuing a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. I have always been guided by faith, perseverance, and a desire to serve others. These values have shaped my approach to leadership and service, inspiring me to seek opportunities that allow me to make a meaningful impact in my community. Since my freshman year, I have served on the Seymour City Hall Youth Council, where I have worked alongside city leaders to contribute ideas and initiatives that promote youth involvement in local government. Initially, attending meetings and sharing my thoughts with city officials felt intimidating, but over time I gained confidence and learned how meaningful it is for young people to have a voice in shaping their community. This experience strengthened my leadership and communication skills while allowing me to help create opportunities for other students to engage in civic life. I have also been deeply involved in my church community. During my sophomore year, I was selected to rotate as lead guitarist for the youth worship band. In this role, I not only helped lead worship but also mentored younger students, encouraging them to share their talents and grow in confidence. Volunteering for church outreach programs and participating in initiatives such as United Way’s Day of Caring have further reinforced my belief that service is about strengthening others and fostering unity. In 2024, I completed an internship with the City of Seymour, where I assisted in creating marketing campaigns for community events. Through this work, I saw how strategic communication can increase participation, connect residents, and bring people together. These experiences confirmed my ambition to pursue a career in strategic marketing, using creativity and leadership to help organizations grow while positively impacting the communities they serve. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of pursuing higher education, allowing me to focus fully on developing the skills and experience necessary to turn preparation into purpose. It would enable me to continue pursuing leadership, volunteerism, and professional opportunities that strengthen my ability to serve others effectively. As a first-generation college student, I view this scholarship not only as support for my education but as an investment in the ways I can give back. I plan to use my knowledge and skills in marketing to support organizations, businesses, and initiatives that create opportunity, foster community engagement, and empower others. By providing me the resources to continue my education, this scholarship will allow me to transform my preparation into meaningful action, helping me make a lasting positive impact in the world.

One issue I have observed in my community is that many young people feel disconnected from local civic activities and decision-making. Opportunities exist for youth involvement, but awareness and engagement are often limited. As a result, many students do not realize that their voices can influence the future of the community they live in. I was motivated to address this issue when I joined the Seymour City Hall Youth Council during my freshman year. Initially, attending meetings with city leaders felt intimidating, but I quickly realized how important it was for young people to be present in those conversations. I began to see that youth participation could bring fresh perspectives and ideas that might otherwise be overlooked. Through the Youth Council, I worked alongside other students and city leaders to help promote opportunities for youth involvement in community initiatives. One of my goals was to help encourage students to see themselves as active contributors rather than passive observers. By participating in discussions, sharing ideas, and collaborating with local leaders, I helped support efforts that strengthened the connection between young people and our local government. In addition to my role on the Youth Council, my 2024 internship with the City of Seymour allowed me to contribute in another meaningful way. I assisted with marketing campaigns that promoted community events and initiatives designed to increase participation among residents. Through strategic communication and outreach, I saw how effective messaging could bring more people together and increase awareness of opportunities to get involved. These experiences helped me accomplish something important: helping amplify youth voices and encouraging greater participation in community activities. While the impact may seem small at first, every conversation, event, and initiative that encourages involvement helps strengthen the foundation of a more engaged community. Moving forward, I hope to expand these efforts by continuing to use marketing and communication skills to connect people with opportunities to serve and participate in their communities. As I pursue my degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing, I plan to support organizations, local governments, and community initiatives that seek to engage young people and inspire civic involvement. By helping people see that their voice matters and their involvement can make a difference, I hope to contribute to building stronger, more connected communities where everyone feels empowered to participate and lead.
    Spark the Change Scholarship
My commitment to giving back to my community has been shaped by faith, service, and the belief that preparation allows us to help others when opportunities arise. Proverbs 3:27 says, “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to act.” That principle has guided how I approach leadership and service in my community. Since my freshman year, I have served on the Seymour City Hall Youth Council where I have worked alongside city leaders to represent the voice of local youth. At first, speaking in meetings with city officials felt intimidating, but over time I gained confidence and contributed ideas that encouraged greater youth involvement in our community. This experience allowed me to participate in projects that connected students with local initiatives and strengthened my sense of civic responsibility. I have also served actively within my church community. During my sophomore year, I was selected to rotate as lead guitarist for the youth worship band. In that role I not only helped lead worship but also encouraged younger students to step forward and share their musical talents. By mentoring younger members and helping build unity within the group, I learned that service often means helping others grow in confidence and purpose. Beyond these roles, I have volunteered with community initiatives such as United Way’s Day of Caring and church outreach programs that serve local families. These experiences allowed me to contribute time and energy toward projects that directly support the needs of people in our community. In 2024, I also completed an internship with the City of Seymour where I helped develop marketing campaigns for community events. Through this work I saw how effective communication and outreach can bring people together and increase participation in programs that benefit the community. It showed me that even behind-the-scenes work can play an important role in strengthening a community. Through these opportunities I learned that giving back is not defined by recognition but by consistent effort, preparation, and a willingness to serve wherever help is needed. As a first-generation college student, I view education as a tool that will allow me to expand the ways I can contribute to the community that has invested in me. My goal is to continue using leadership, communication, and marketing skills to support local organizations, small businesses, and community initiatives that bring people together and create opportunity for others. I am committed to serving with integrity, humility, and purpose while helping my community continue to grow and thrive.
