      Elizabeth D. Stark Art Scholarship
Art has been more than just a hobby or a pastime for me; it has been a lifeline, a way to connect with the world when words have failed me. Growing up, I faced a significant challenge in the form of social anxiety, a burden that became particularly heavy when I moved to the United States in the 5th grade. Navigating a new culture, a new language, and new social dynamics was overwhelming, and I often found myself struggling to communicate and make connections with others. It was during this challenging period that I discovered the power of art. My ability to draw and create became a way to bridge the gap between myself and those around me. I vividly remember the first time my artwork was recognized by my peers—it was a simple drawing, yet it sparked conversations and, more importantly, friendships. For the first time, I felt that I had something valuable to offer, something that could speak for me when my voice felt too small or too uncertain. Since then, art has become my second voice and a core part of my identity. Through each stroke of a pencil or brush, I am able to express thoughts and emotions that I cannot easily articulate. My creations are not just images on a page; they are a reflection of my inner world, a way to communicate my feelings, ideas, and experiences in a way that feels authentic and true to who I am. As I’ve grown older, my passion for art has only deepened. What began as a personal coping mechanism has evolved into a lifelong pursuit. I am drawn to the endless possibilities that art offers—the ability to experiment, to explore, and to convey complex emotions and concepts without the constraints of language. Art allows me to connect with others on a deeper level, to share my perspective, and to contribute to a broader conversation about the human experience. This is why I am committed to pursuing art through education. I want to hone my skills, expand my knowledge, and explore new mediums and techniques. More importantly, I want to continue using art as my primary means of communication with the world. Through further education, I hope to refine my ability to express those suppressed ideas and feelings that are often difficult to put into words. Art is not just a passion for me; it is my voice, my identity, and my way of making sense of the world around me. By pursuing art academically, I aim to grow not only as an artist but as a communicator, using my creativity to connect with others in meaningful ways. I am deeply passionate about this journey, and I am eager to continue developing my voice through the limitless possibilities that art education offers.
      Filipino-American Scholarship
My "why" is rooted in my desire to share my culture and experiences through art. As a Filipino-American, I have the unique experience of being part of two cultures, each with its own values, traditions, and stories. This dual cultural background has shaped my purpose: to create art that reflects my heritage while also connecting with a broader audience. Growing up, I was surrounded by the warmth and resilience that are central to Filipino culture. The importance of family, community, and perseverance were values I absorbed from a young age. These values have not only influenced my personal life but have also become a guiding force in my art. They remind me to stay grounded, to prioritize what truly matters, and to create with intention. My Filipino identity encourages me to incorporate cultural elements, such as folklore and everyday experiences, into my work. Through my art, I aim to honor these traditions while sharing something meaningful with others. At the same time, being Filipino-American has taught me the importance of balance and adaptability. Navigating between two cultures has required me to be flexible and open-minded, skills that have proven invaluable not just in art but in all areas of life. This ability to adapt has allowed me to blend the best aspects of both worlds, creating something that is uniquely my own. It’s this fusion of cultures that drives me to pursue my passion with purpose, ensuring that my work is both authentic and impactful. Art has become my way of exploring and expressing my identity. It allows me to connect with my heritage on a deeper level while also inviting others to see and appreciate the richness of Filipino culture. My Filipino identity plays a key role in shaping this purpose, constantly inspiring and refining my creative journey. In essence, my "why" is to use my art as a bridge between cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation through creative expression. My Filipino identity is central to this mission, guiding me as I navigate my path as an artist and as an individual.
