Deciding to work in K–12 education, my journey began much earlier. It was very much driven by experience, as well as background and dedication to continue serving and mentoring special needs children. Ever since I was a little boy, I have been attracted to supporting and inspiring others, especially children who need extra guidance, patience, and advocacy. And the interest grew into a purpose when I got my hands dirty with special needs students between 4 & 18 years old. The incident happened at work and in a joint project, and it made me learn a lot about professionalism, self-advocacy, and perseverance. Although discouraging and frustrating at first, the experience had taught me valuable skills and ways of thinking that I still use today. We were required by the nature of the project to conduct a research-based assessment; it was a research project, which I realized to be a highly rigorous project that demanded careful analysis and organization to be followed by analysis, organization, and making preparations. I had actually been gathering data, synthesizing data for several weeks, gathering it together, and drafting the key information, creating key sections of a report written up that was then presented to our management team. I also suggested major ideas and methods that would ground our recommendations. During the whole project, I was as diligent as I could be in ensuring that I was contributing correctly on an accurate basis and at the right scale to the team’s project goals. I was sure that I would be acknowledged, especially because of my extensive labour behind the scenes for project success. On the day of the presentation, my teammate had to make the report for the management. The teammate during the presentation spoke confidently and highlighted the sections they had “developed,” thus taking credit for the sections I wrote and the ideas I put down. Initially, my feelings were shock, disappointment, and frustration. It felt unfair that I hadn’t had my work credited to me, as my hard work was not recognized by the people I came alongside. I could not stand directly after the talk, because I wasn't ready! At this time, I was also immediately at a loss for words. There was work as it were, and I couldn't interrupt without generating tension or shame in a business setting. For the time being, I chose to stay within myself. I also knew that trying to act quickly in front of management would reflect badly on me, as well as my career reputation. I provided documents of my work drafts, notes, and records of my contributions to help clarify my role in the project. Second, the experience highlighted the importance of patience and professionalism in challenging circumstances. It made me wish to scream emotionally or stand up for my teammate, but being calm helped me deal with the situation with integrity. By handling this matter privately and respectfully, I was able to maintain relationships with both my boss and one of my colleagues, proving to myself that one can advocate for oneself without generating unnecessary friction. Third, the new knowledge gained led to a different view of personal development and persistence. It was disappointing to know somebody else was getting credit, but that was because, you know, setbacks are normal in professional life and personal life too. This instilled my appreciation for my own contributions and taught me that no matter the situation, I know I can handle the challenge with confidence and maturity. Even when I received some recognition and recognition, I also learned that the skills I acquired in the process and the experience of bouncing back through failures were equally valuable. It also helped me to assert myself more powerfully, the importance of being patient and professional, and the importance of being proactive with one’s dialogue during collaborative projects and communication. It also inspired my confidence and resilience, teaching me lessons that are not limited to one event. In the next situation, if it had to happen again, I would certainly do it the same way with force, presence, professionalism, and calm, learning from each new experience so that I would be articulate and fair from day 1. Alzheimer’s does and other related dementias hit not only affect the people diagnosed with these conditions, but also the families and communities that stand by them. That was my story with dementia; of course, it started when my grandmother began exhibiting signs of dementia. Her condition was not as marked at that time, but the slow deterioration of her memory and behavior had a profound emotional impact on me, as well as teaching me the virtues of patience, compassion, and awareness of cognitive health. At first, the signs were very subtle, and she would occasionally forget where she placed familiar items or repeat some of her questions within a limited time. Though the evidence had been hard to remember, she sometimes found it hard to remember what she had just said, or how things seemed to go. These episodes were dismissed as normal, as many families do, as part of aging. But as these occurrences unfolded more and more often, something darker was happening. Seeing an organization-oriented, sharp, dependable person start to be challenged just by their memory was deeply disorienting and sad. When I went back to school, the only place in my life I knew anything about was the language of the adults I used to hang out with. This was an emotionally difficult time to wrap my head around. My grandmother had always been a pillar of support in our family, someone we turned to for guidance, counsel, and wisdom. It hurt to see her get frustrated and humiliated with forgetfulness, and it made me question my notions of independence and getting older. At times, she was conscious of her forgetfulness, which was obviously distressing to her, others when she did not recognize the condition, and in those moments her surroundings were bewildered. Those reversals underscored for me the point that dementia is not simply a matter of memory but also affects emotional states, identity, and self-perception in many areas. As a family, we had to adapt the way we communicated and took care of her. This made us appreciate how important it is for families to know what their children are up to. And so we went on to try to help her at this point by calling out her mistakes or correcting her, or asking her not to repeat the things that were wrong in her head, which just made it harder. We didn't tell her we tried reassurance, patience, and trying to keep the atmosphere relaxed. We modified how we communicated by making our words clearer, summarizing instructions when relevant, and utilizing cues such as notes and predictable rhythms as reminders. Sneaking in and out of her life for a few minutes - like labeling what she would do by name, turning conversations around, and getting a lot more attention started helping bring her dignity and control back into our home in small ways, too. These changes took time and emotional energy, but also helped to bind us closer as a family, and the idea of empathy, to the way caregiving goes. My grandmother’s experience also led me to realize the difficulties that caregivers have during such periods. Dementia can impact whole families and often is a burden that takes a toll on loved ones, taking up caregiving roles from top to bottom in terms of emotion and money. I observed how worry, lack of clarity, and fear of advancement weigh heavily on families. That helped me have a bigger respect for caregivers, the things they sacrificed, often on less than proper support. It emphasized community-based services, caregiver education, and accessible healthcare. Outside of my family, that experience also shaped the way I see dementia around the community. This has led to the realization that more vulnerable families are not getting the early screening, education, or specialized care they may need, especially in underserved communities. Cultural stigma and misinformation can put stigma on seeking help, which creates further symptoms that worsen before intervention. My grandmother’s early dementia signs helped teach me how vital awareness and early detection are in helping to restore quality of life and slow progression. It stressed the importance of providing public education, forming support groups, and enacting health care policies that put cognitive health and the elderly at the forefront. My grandmother taught me that dementia does not only mean “learning to forget” something; it also means not to lose a little bit of humanity, connection, and dignity, to preserve their dignity. It taught me that meeting people where they are, not what they can no longer do. Even as memory evaporates, emotions remain quite preserved. A kind tone, music you know, or just being there can be a balm and a source of joy when words are lost. And I took that knowledge and reframed the way I understood communication – the belief that it is important for us to open our ears to hearing and our hearts, and not just words. In the end, my grandmother’s early dementia helped change my outlook on health, family, and empathy. It taught me patience in times of irritation, empathy for misunderstandings, and thankfulness for the time that we have with loved ones. It also sparked an impulse to seek greater awareness, better resources, and more humane assistance to the persons and families touched by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related diseases. Dementia is a dark and painful road, but it also offers endless teachings about love, courage, and the resilience of common humanity, a profound reminder of the profound power of people.

The legacy of service, sacrifice, and courage left by Sgt. Albert Dono Ware is right up my alley because of how he lived his life, and as a result, I can define by what I see now my goals for the future. Those principles are not just abstract ideals to me; they are lived commitments that impact how I do education, community, and advocacy. Service helps me remember that progress is not achieved individually, but as part of a team. Sacrifice illustrates the truth that real change may often mean struggling and doing things at great personal cost. Bravery means being assertive, fighting against injustice, and having the courage to act even when its outcomes are questionable. Collectively, these principles shaped my stance on my job responsibilities and solutions to challenges the African diaspora was experiencing in the United States. I can personally say that for me, service has meant learning to balance my work, school, and time with family while working towards long-term goals that go beyond the short-term. And in many of the same places in my race: I am not alone, as I’ve seen countless people from the African diaspora suffer systemic barriers — like unequal access to a quality education, healthcare disparities, and economic inequality. On a personal level, sacrifice has been evidenced by delayed gratification and persistent effort: the struggle to maintain my education and pursue a career of service for other people. Bravery began to arise when I had to use my voice for myself and other people, even when doing so was hard or dangerous. At all times, I have made it my conviction that change depends jointly upon personal responsibility and collective action for this. My vision for addressing current challenges experienced by the African diaspora is inspired by the legacy of Sgt. Ware embodies dignity, equity, and empowerment. One key area of reform is education policy. Equitable funding for public schools, culturally responsive curricula, and expanded access to higher education can help reduce generational gaps. Education also gives economic upward mobility, as well as civic and leadership roles among the underprivileged. Moreover, reforming health care — especially policies targeting racial disparities in access, maternal health, and mental health — is key to quality of life and longer-term outcomes. Community-based reforms are just as important. Investing in programs on a local level that uplift young people through mentorship, youth development, and prepare them for the workforce can be a means of breaking cycles of poverty and disenfranchisement. Programs that connect mental health services with communication skills, as well as family resources, are particularly important for addressing immediate needs while ensuring the long-term stability of families’ health. Allowing people to feel safe, safe spaces for them to rise and speak in safety reflects not only the values of service and bravery embodied by Sgt. Ware, but also courage. The creation of safe spaces in which one can be heard and inspired, and support, that develop confidence and support others, is a good indication of our values of service, such as that which Sgt. Ware embodies. The only way to bring about genuine change is together; key players should be working collaboratively. The prioritization of equity-driven legislation and accountability must be a priority for policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels. It is educational institutions that centralize efforts for expanding access to, supporting such first-generation students, and establishing an inclusive environment. Healthcare providers and public health agencies should partner with local organizations to provide culturally competent care. Most crucially, grassroots groups, families, members of grassroots communities, and community leaders need to be involved, as the only sustainable solutions work best when they are guided by those people most affected. As Sgt. Albert Dono Ware reminds me in the end, a legacy of service, sacrifice, and bravery never dies in moments of crisis; it has been a daily commitment to justice. These values help me as I engage in the journey of advocacy, education, and reform. By enacting that legacy through purposeful engagement along with unified leadership, I hope to be a part of a way forward for the African diaspora to have equal chances to succeed and flourish in the U.S.

The most impactful moment in my life involving my voice was not a time when speaking came easily, but a time when I struggled to be heard. During a period when I was juggling work, school, and family responsibilities, I often remained silent even when I was really struggling. Keeping quiet or expressing my thoughts was the best strategy for avoiding conflict and the burden of others’ views. Slowly, that silence started to chip away at my self-esteem and emotional stability, causing my sense of invisibility and voicelessness. The real turning point occurred on a working day at work, during an office meeting where something was happening that I could not control and had immediate consequences for my work week and hours. If I stood by and didn’t say anything, the expectations would grow large and unbearably unmanageable. I paused at last and was very timid and nervous, and finally expressed my reservations. My voice quavered, and I worried about how I looked, and my body shook. But in the end, I found relief in merely speaking my truth. To my surprise, the fact that my fears were shared by many and I was recognized as respected and understood at once led to changes, and a realignment was made. In those seconds, I was struck by the force of what communication can be when it is sincere and deliberate. This is a case that showed me a loud voice has to be as much about you who fights for yourself and for others, as it has to be about shouting. I discovered that confidence increases as one speaks well, no matter how apprehensive they may be. Voicing it has taught me to draw lines and define who I am and my values, to create more connections. Going forward, I hope to give back by giving a voice to the voiceless, especially for those who cannot find the words or have not been heard. And in my professional journey towards the field of speech-language pathology, what I hope to do is help others to own their voices, giving them space to be heard and speak their full story. My struggle to not be able to speak out has led me to seek out my passion for advocacy, empathy, and communication, and will serve as fuel for me in my goal of using my voice to raise others up to be a voice that uplifts, enables, and motivates others.

Music has been a big part of my life, a source that has moved and influenced me. It speaks to our hearts in a way that words alone cannot. In particular, gospel, classical, and jazz music are my passions because each form represents different ways to think, work, grow, and connect with others. Hope is my theme in gospel music. Classical music represents discipline and structure and emotion, and has really inspired me to have patience and appreciation of mastery and dedication. Jazz values creativity and improvisation and fosters individuality, confidence, and freedom of expression. These genres have influenced the way I see music as a powerful medium of healing, learning, and inspiration. While I love listening to music, I understand in what way music can inspire or empower us to work through any of our emotions, communication, and develop from there. Music acts as a balm and something that can inspire a lot of people, especially youth, and gives them the confidence to speak or experience feelings. Music was always my comfort and expression when I was growing up; it’s what pulled me through life, enabled me to overcome and rejoice in what went well, and also to celebrate what went well. This personal relationship has sparked my wish to use music as a means to influence and serve teens in positive and meaningful ways. My future career will involve helping youth to give back through the inclusion of music in therapeutic, educational, and community-based settings. With a career in speech-language pathology, I aim to integrate elements of music with therapy to support the children in enhancing their skills in communication, language development, and confidence. Music is effective in activities to make learning more personal and fun, especially for children with speech & language issues. Rhythm, melody, and repetition can help preserve memory, articulation, and express emotions so children can learn how best they’d like to and from the song and music, for some, a good time too. Also, beyond my professional pursuits, I hope to be involved with mentoring programs and community outreach programs that utilize music as a positive means of expression for young people. I am dedicated to promoting those programs where the youth get exposed to gospel, classical music, and jazz, encouraging them to be creative, and to be disciplined, and appreciate their culture. By sharing my music, I also hope to establish those warm, nurturing places where young people can feel not just understood by me, but also accepted, and an encouraging place where they can express themselves as themselves, in a way that they do not feel afraid to. That, when you're really honest, is music for love. In the end, love and service go hand in hand, and I strive to live it out. Music can change lives, confidence creation and resilience. I will make a positive impact on the youth by equipping them with music tools, which will assist them in becoming articulate, communicative people who will better know what they want, as well as shaping their future through a career in speech-language pathology.

I did not plan to become a teacher the day I stood alone in a classroom meant for someone else. I was a teaching assistant, filling in while the school searched for a permanent teacher, when a group of students many with special needs walked in looking unsure and overwhelmed. There were no lesson plans waiting for me, no familiar routines for them, just a room full of students who needed structure, reassurance, and someone willing to step up. In that moment, I realized teaching was not simply about instruction; it was about presence, responsibility, and belief. That was the moment I knew I wanted to pursue a career in teaching. My interest in teaching comes from working closely with students who struggle to be seen and understood. As a teaching assistant in special education settings, I have witnessed how easily students can internalize frustration when they feel overlooked or underestimated. I am drawn to teaching because it allows me to advocate for students who need patience, consistency, and encouragement to thrive. I want to be the teacher who creates a safe learning environment where students feel supported, valued, and capable of growth at their own pace. One teacher who changed my life was my elementary school teacher, who recognized my potential long before I recognized it myself. I was a quiet student who often doubted my abilities. Instead of labeling my silence as disengagement, she saw it as hesitation and took the time to build my confidence. She encouraged me to speak up, praised my efforts, and made learning feel safe rather than intimidating. Her belief in me planted a sense of self-worth that stayed with me long after I left her classroom. I am passionate about this profession because I believe special education is not about limitations; it is about unlocking potential. A student’s “sense of presence” means awareness of self knowing I exist, I matter, and my thoughts and feelings have value. For students with special needs, this sense of presence is often the first thing lost in environments that prioritize speed, standardization, and comparison. When students are constantly reminded of what they cannot do, they begin to disappear not physically, but internally. To guide students toward experiencing their own presence, I believe the first step is creating a classroom environment rooted in safety and trust. Students cannot recognize themselves if they feel anxious, rushed, or invisible. I aim to create a space where mistakes are not punished but explored, where communication is encouraged in all forms spoken words, gestures, visuals, or assistive technology and where progress is measured by growth, not comparison. When a student feels safe, they begin to show up. When they feel seen, they begin to engage. My mission as a special education teacher is to help students recognize their strengths before they internalize their struggles. I will guide students to their sense of presence by celebrating small victories raising a hand for the first time, making eye contact, completing a task independently, or expressing an emotion appropriately. These moments may seem small to others, but to a student learning to trust themselves, they are monumental. Each success reinforces the message: You are capable. You are here. I also believe presence is built through choice and agency. Many students with special needs have little control over their daily experiences. I plan to incorporate choices into lessons choosing activities, tools, seating, or even how they demonstrate understanding. When students are given choices, they are no longer passive recipients of instruction; they become active participants in their learning. This sense of ownership strengthens their identity and builds confidence. Communication plays a vital role in helping students experience their presence. My growing interest in speech-language pathology has deepened my understanding of how communication impacts self-worth. When students struggle to express themselves, frustration often replaces confidence. I aim to work collaboratively with speech therapists, families, and support staff to ensure students have the tools they need to communicate effectively. When a student realizes they can be understood, their sense of presence becomes undeniable. Optional Fairy Tale: Once upon a time, there was a heroine who entered a quiet kingdom filled with children who had learned to make themselves small. Some spoke in whispers, some spoke with their hands, and some did not speak at all. The world around them moved too fast, and many had begun to believe they did not belong in it. The heroine did not arrive with magic spells or swords. Instead, she carried patience, compassion, and an unwavering belief in each child’s worth. She sat with them, listened closely, and taught them that their voices however they emerged mattered. Slowly, the children began to stand taller. They learned their names were powerful, their thoughts were important, and their presence changed the room simply by existing in it. By the end of the tale, the kingdom was no longer quiet not because it was loud, but because it was alive. And the heroine knew she had accomplished her goal, not by changing the children, but by helping them discover who they already were. This fairy tale mirrors my real-life mission as a special education teacher. I do not want to change students to fit the world; I want to help them recognize their presence so they can confidently take their place in it. Teaching students with special needs is not just my career goal it is my calling. I am passionate about guiding students toward self-awareness, confidence, and belonging, because when students know they are present, learning becomes possible.
