The trajectory of my education has been profoundly shaped by the formidable challenges posed by homelessness and financial instability. When the Covid-19 Pandemic swept across the nation, I found myself abruptly displaced from Colorado to the bustling heart of New York City with nothing but a duffle bag in July 2020. This sudden upheaval plunged me into a state of uncertainty, scared of what the future held. Without a stable place to call home, pursuing education became an uphill battle, overshadowed by the pressing need for survival in an unforgiving urban landscape. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, the compassionate assistance of a lactation nurse emerged as a beacon of hope, offering not just shelter but also a sense of direction. It was through her unwavering support that I found solace and the determination to carve a path towards a brighter future. Having never truly known my biological mother, she became the adoptive mother I never had. In November 2020, I commenced a career at Metropolitan Hospital, marking the beginning of a journey characterized by resilience and tenacity. Over the ensuing four years, I navigated the corridors of three hospitals while concurrently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in International Criminal Justice. The tumultuous journey was riddled with challenges, exacerbated by the relentless cycle of financial instability. The lack of financial resources cast a shadow over my educational pursuits, restricting access to crucial resources and impeding academic progress. Under the weight of financial burdens, realizing my dreams often felt like an insurmountable hurdle. Within the dynamic hospital environment, I confronted the stark reality of profound disparities in healthcare access among New York City's most marginalized communities. The unwavering dedication of healthcare professionals delivering compassionate care ignited a deep-seated desire within me to make a direct impact on patient well-being. In the spring of 2024, I took the initial steps towards actualizing my aspirations, embarking on prerequisites for a night nursing program. Each milestone along the way served as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, illustrating the transformative power of perseverance in the face of adversity. Currently, as I steadily progress towards enrollment in BMCC’s esteemed nursing program, the prospect of realizing my dreams fills me with anticipation and determination. My goal is to become a RN, and perhaps one day, an MD. Reflecting on the trajectory of my life, I am deeply humbled by the pivotal role played by a nurse whose intervention provided not just sustenance but also opportunities for growth and self-discovery. The journey from homelessness to the pursuit of becoming a patient care provider exemplifies the transformative power of empathy and resilience. Motivated by a profound desire to bridge healthcare disparities and embody the compassion extended to me in my time of need, I am driven to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Gratitude and determination resonate deeply within me, each serving as a reminder of the interconnectedness of our human experiences and the boundless potential for positive change. As I stand on the precipice of a new chapter, I do so with humility, gratitude, and an unwavering resolve to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, just as nurses have done for me. The prospect of a scholarship serves as a beacon of hope, offering much-needed financial support to alleviate the burden of financial instability. This scholarship holds the potential to empower me to positively impact the lives of others, embodying the transformative essence of compassion and resilience within the healthcare sphere. Through the generosity of scholarships like these, dreams are nourished, futures are shaped, and lives are forever transformed.

Growing up in foster care immersed me in the traditions of Christian and Catholic households, yet the concept of a divine Creator who designed heaven and earth always eluded me. Despite the religious surroundings, my faith wavered in the face of adversity. The turbulence of my upbringing seemed to defy the notion of a benevolent deity, leaving me to question the fairness of a higher power. With a broken home, parents entangled in legal troubles, and the constant upheaval of foster care, I often found myself in tears, yearning for stability, love, and an escape from poverty. In the depths of my despair, the belief in a loving home and a supportive family felt like a distant dream. The crucible of doubt truly tested my faith during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time of unprecedented hardship. Fleeing from the clutches of an abusive relationship in Texas and facing job loss amidst lockdowns in Colorado, I arrived in New York City in July 2020 with nothing but a duffle bag to my name. Despite the grim reality of sleeping in shelters and relying on the kindness of strangers for sustenance, an inexplicable sense of hope buoyed my spirits. Amidst the darkness, a flicker of optimism ignited within me, whispering of impending miracles and a turning tide. True to the silent prophecy that stirred within, fate intervened within the first week of my arrival. A chance encounter with a compassionate lactation nurse became the harbinger of change, offering sanctuary within the walls of her home and a lifeline through employment at the hospital where she served. As the city hospital delved into the depths of my history through a comprehensive background check, the tapestry of coincidence began to unravel, revealing threads of connection that transcended mere chance. As part of the background check process, I had to provide a comprehensive list of every address I had lived at over the past 27 years. Given that I was only 24 years old at the time and had moved frequently across state lines during my upbringing, this task presented a significant challenge. With determination, I embarked on a painstaking journey, spending hours delving into my memories and scouring Google Maps to trace the locations of my past residences. Due to difficulty remembering addresses from my infancy, I turned to Ancestry.com in search of the final pieces of the puzzle. During my research, I discovered an incredible coincidence: my paternal family had lived on Seward Avenue, the exact same street in the Bronx where I now live, just a few blocks north, over 24 years ago. The revelation struck me as incredibly serendipitous, reminding me of life's intricate web of coincidences. When I shared this astonishing news with the family who had warmly welcomed me into their home, they were stunned, unable to grasp the significance of such an improbable occurrence. To me, it affirmed that I was finally in the right place, with the right family. It served as a poignant reminder that I was exactly where I needed to be at that time, reinforcing my faith in a higher power. In times of despair, I hold onto this remarkable coincidence as a beacon of hope—a subtle sign from God that miracles can happen, illuminating the path forward. Without the Velez family, I would not be where I am today, or where I hope to be in the future. These encounters, full of chance and wonders serve as a reminder to me of life's blessings and beauty.

My academic journey exemplifies perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering desire to learn. After growing up in foster care, full time custody was awarded to my biological father when I was 13. From that age, the threat of being kicked out once I turned 18 was loomed over my head. I earned my GED at the age of 17 after attending 6 different high schools, refusing to let obstacles stand in the way of my educational goals. At age of 18, I had moved out and began working full-time between two jobs to ensure financial stability. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, I remained steadfast in my commitment to pursue higher education. At 21, I made the decision to return to school, earning an associate's degree—an accomplishment that marked a significant milestone in my academic journey. However, the path to success was not without its obstacles. The onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic in July 2020 brought about an unexpected turn in my life. I found myself abruptly uprooted from Colorado and thrusted into the bustling streets of New York City with only a duffle bag to my name. Amidst the uncertainty and despair, the compassionate aid of a lactation nurse not only provided me with shelter but also paved the way for my career at NYC HHC Metropolitan Hospital by November 2020. In the ensuing four years, marked by my tenure across three hospitals and the attainment of a bachelor’s degree, I confronted the stark reality of healthcare disparities among the city’s most vulnerable communities. Witnessing the tireless dedication of healthcare professionals ignited within me a profound desire to make a direct impact on patient well-being. This led me to embark on a journey towards nursing. In the spring of 2024, I returned to school to complete the prerequisites for a night nursing program, paving the way for the next phase of my professional development. Currently, I am diligently working towards enrollment in BMCC’s esteemed nursing program, slated for the spring of 2025.
