Bio

I'm a future college freshman with a passion for mental health advocacy. Having faced my own challenges, I know how isolating and overwhelming the struggle can be. That’s why I’m driven to make a real difference in the lives of others who are navigating similar battles. Through empathy, education, and action, I hope to create a space where people feel seen, supported, and never alone. My journey is just beginning, but my purpose is clear—to turn my pain into purpose and help others find hope.

Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It's about how you drive, not where you're going." This perspective, shared by Psychology Professor Noam Shpancer, PhD, resonates with the challenges I've faced over the past several years. My journey began in middle school when I first experienced anxiety and depression. These overwhelming feelings intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, with isolation and uncertainty taking a toll on my mental well-being. It amplified my social anxiety and deepened my self-doubt. I struggled to feel comfortable in my skin, making it difficult to focus on important aspects of life such as school and relationships. As I entered high school, I realized I needed to change. I gathered the courage to reach out to my mom and the school counselor for help. Admitting the need for support felt daunting initially, but taking that step was one of my most significant decisions. With guidance from my family and counselors, I attended counseling sessions, which became a safe space for me to express my feelings and learn how to navigate them. I discovered healthy coping strategies for anxiety and depression, and these tools have proven invaluable on difficult days. I now approach mental health with a greater understanding and compassion; this impactful experience has inspired me to advocate for mental health awareness and encourage others to seek support when needed. Despite my challenges, I remained resilient, maintaining a 3.96 GPA and ranking 57th out of 402 students in my class. My passion for the subject solidified after taking AP Psychology during my junior year. The class provided insights into the science behind human behavior, covering topics such as cognitive development, personality, and mental health. Motivated by what I learned, I joined the Students Against Destructive Behaviors organization, where I had the opportunity to engage in service and leadership by speaking to elementary students about making wise decisions. As a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, I participated in fundraisers to support vulnerable students nationwide. Supporting others through acts of service has been highly rewarding for me. In addition to these activities, I was involved in the Student Council and played on the JV Tennis team, which helped me develop crucial interpersonal skills that will be beneficial in college. This year, I stepped outside my comfort zone by joining the DECA club and participating in the district competition. DECA's emphasis on leadership development and entrepreneurial skills aligns with my goal of establishing a behavioral therapy practice focusing on clinical child psychology, particularly for underserved communities. I share my story as a testament to how mental health has influenced my life and my career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist. From this experience, I have gained growth and resilience, refusing to let my situation define me. Pursuing a college education will be challenging, but I am determined to face any challenge head-on by using self-awareness, reaching out for help, and employing coping strategies. Life is imperfect, and obstacles will be along the way, but the effort yields gratifying results. I look forward to the next chapter of my life in college and the possibility of becoming a psychologist. With your organization's help, I am one step closer to achieving my goals.

When I was younger, I wanted nothing more than to help those in need, whether that be through wanting to be a chef or baker as I make people feel better through food or being a nurse and helping people in a more literal sense. As I have grown up, my desire to help others is still strong and instilled in my current values. I have decided to become a psychologist because mental health is a cause of importance to me and very near and dear to my heart. I am interested in psychology because of my experiences and how it offers insights into people evaluating the behavior and minds of others and themselves. I have taken the steps and initiative to ensure that I will successfully achieve my degree, such as taking an AP Psychology course in school and scoring the highest grade offered, a five. I aspire to make a difference in people's lives who need accessible and affordable mental health services. This is one of my many passions because of my personal therapy experiences as well as my personals experiences helping those through their own personal problems. Through therapy, I have used what I have learned and the lesssons therapy has taught so I can help those who have similar struggles as me. Although the therapy I have received has been free and accessible, others are not as lucky as I am, which is unfortunate because I believe everyone should have access to reasonable and accessible mental health resources. I have maintained excellent grades throughout my post-secondary education and challenged myself by taking AP and honors classes. I was recently recognized by the Utica Board of Education as an academic scholar. I have participated in Thrive Scholars and Next Level Scholars programs, so I may be successful when I go to college and pursue my degree. My values of hard work and dedication have helped me continue to be successful and encouraged me to pursue things beyond what I thought I was capable of, such as a pharmacology degree and a doctoral degree. Although I am apprehensive about the adversity I will face along the way, I am not afraid to make mistakes because I know I am not perfect. But I will make sure that I try my best to give it my all so I can make my hopes and dreams a reality. I hope to achieve a rewarding yet fulfilling career where I can take pride in my work and tell others about it with great reverence.
