Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up, my experiences with finances and financial education were shaped largely by observing my family and the challenges we faced when moving to the United States from Nigeria in 2013. When I first arrived, my family had to adjust to a new environment, learn how to manage expenses in a different system, and find ways to provide for everyone. From a young age, I watched how my parents carefully planned and budgeted to make ends meet, and how every dollar was earned through hard work and sacrifice. These experiences taught me that financial responsibility is not just about money, but about planning, patience, and understanding the consequences of decisions.
Initially, I had little formal education about finances, so much of what I learned was practical. I learned how to budget my own money from allowances, save for things I wanted, and make choices that prioritized necessity over convenience. I also observed how financial challenges can affect opportunities, whether it was deciding on school programs, extracurricular activities, or resources like tutoring and summer programs. This awareness made me more determined to seek scholarships, manage my resources wisely, and understand financial concepts that could help me build stability in the future.
As I prepare to attend college, finances have become even more real to me. I am learning about tuition, budgeting for living expenses, and how scholarships, grants, and careful planning can make a significant difference. I have realized that financial literacy is an essential skill that goes beyond school. It affects independence, career choices, and the ability to support others in your community. I have also begun to understand the importance of saving, investing, and avoiding unnecessary debt so I can create a strong foundation for my future.
I plan to use what I learn about finances to better my life and the lives of those around me. As a student pursuing mechanical engineering, I know that my education is an investment in my future. I intend to manage my money responsibly, make informed decisions about loans or savings, and take advantage of opportunities that will help me grow financially and
professionally. Beyond my personal goals, I want to give back by mentoring younger students, teaching them the importance of financial literacy, and showing them how planning and discipline can open doors to opportunities they might not have thought possible.
By combining my education with sound financial habits, I hope to achieve independence, create stability for my family, and contribute positively to my community.

1. When did you learn English?
I learned English after moving from Nigeria to the United States in 2013. When I first arrived, I was not as comfortable speaking English, but being surrounded by my cousins helped me a lot. They spoke English every day and would correct me, practice with me, and help me understand how to communicate better. Over time, I became more confident through conversations at home and in school. That experience taught me how to adapt quickly and not be afraid to learn from others, which still helps me today in my academics and communication.
2 (a). Describe an obstacle you encountered in your educational journey?
One major obstacle I faced was balancing school while playing an entire football season with a torn meniscus. It was physically painful and mentally draining, especially while taking AP classes and maintaining a 3.7 GPA. There were times I felt overwhelmed trying to keep up with both football and schoolwork.
2 (b). How did you overcome this obstacle?
I overcame this by staying disciplined and focused on my goals. Even when I was tired or in pain, I made sure to complete my assignments and stay on track. I reminded myself why I started and what I wanted for my future. That experience taught me resilience and showed me I can push through difficult situations.
3. Who is your educational role model and why?
My educational role model is my older brother. I have watched him stay focused on his education and work hard even when things were not easy. He set an example for me by staying disciplined and always pushing himself to do better. Seeing his journey motivated me to take school seriously and aim higher.
4 (a). How do you plan to continue your education?
I plan to attend college and pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. I want to continue challenging myself academically and build the skills needed to succeed in my career.
4 (b). What do you hope to do after you complete your formal educational journey?
After completing my education, I hope to become a mechanical engineer and create solutions that can help improve everyday life. I also want to give back by mentoring younger students.
5. Outside of the traditional school environment, how do you give back to others in your community?
Outside of school, I give back through my mosque by helping with community service and supporting younger students. I try to be someone they can look up to and learn from, just like others did for me.
Gregory Flowers Memorial Scholarship
One of the personal achievements I am most proud of was playing through an entire football season with a torn meniscus. It was not something anyone could see just by watching me play, but every step, cut, and sprint came with pain. There were moments where I questioned whether I should continue, but I made the decision to push through and finish what I started with my team.
Football has always been more than just a sport to me. It is a commitment, a brotherhood, and a responsibility. When I got injured, I knew stepping away would have been the easier choice. However, I also knew that my team was depending on me, and I did not want to let them down. Showing up every day to practice, even when my knee was hurting, required mental strength more than anything else. It forced me to dig deeper than I ever had before and find a level of discipline and resilience that I did not know I had.
Balancing this injury while maintaining my academics made the experience even more challenging. As a student taking AP courses and maintaining a 3.7 GPA, I could not afford to fall behind. There were long days where I would go from intense practices straight into hours of schoolwork, all while dealing with discomfort. That experience taught me how to manage my time effectively, stay focused under pressure, and continue working toward my goals even when circumstances were not ideal.
More importantly, this experience changed my mindset. It taught me that adversity is not something to avoid, but something that builds character. Playing through that season showed me that I am capable of pushing past limits, staying committed, and finishing what I start, even when it is difficult. It also taught me the importance of mental toughness, understanding that your mindset can carry you further than your physical condition at times.
This achievement continues to impact my life today. It has shaped the way I approach challenges, both in school and in my future goals. As I plan to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering, I know that the path ahead will not always be easy. However, the resilience and discipline I developed during that season have prepared me to face those challenges head on. I now approach obstacles with confidence, knowing that I have already overcome something that tested me physically and mentally.
In the end, playing through a torn meniscus was not just about football. It was about proving to myself that I have the strength to persevere. That lesson is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
