I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty or chase sparks — literally. My passion lies in welding and metal fabrication, where precision meets creativity and every project tells a story of hard work and craftsmanship. From the first time I struck an arc, I knew this was more than a skill — it was my calling.
I’m driven by the challenge of turning raw materials into something strong, functional, and lasting. Welding gives me the freedom to create with purpose, the confidence to build my own future, and the discipline to push through challenges with focus and determination. Whether I’m learning new techniques, tackling a tricky project, or setting a perfect bead, I’m always chasing improvement and pride in my craft.
I believe the trades are the backbone of our world — the hidden strength behind every bridge, building, and machine we depend on. I want to be part of that foundation. My goal is to become a certified welder, master advanced fabrication, and eventually run my own shop where I can inspire others to take pride in skilled work.
Outside of welding, I’m a hands-on learner, a problem solver, and someone who doesn’t back down from tough challenges. I bring the same energy to everything I do — whether it’s in class, the workshop, or out in the community.
To me, success isn’t about sitting behind a desk — it’s about building something real. And that’s exactly what I plan to do.

The first time I picked up a welding torch, I felt both nervous and excited. The bright flash of light and the smell of hot metal filled the air as I carefully joined two pieces of steel together. When I lifted my helmet and saw the clean bead I had created, I felt a rush of pride I had never experienced before. That moment changed the way I saw my future. I realized welding wasn’t just about melting metal—it was about building, fixing, and creating things that last. From that day on, I knew I wanted to pursue welding as my career.
Welding fascinates me because it combines strength, precision, and creativity. It’s a field that demands patience and practice, but it also gives you the freedom to express your skill through your work. Every weld tells a story of focus and effort. I love that it’s hands-on and practical, yet still an art form. Whether it’s constructing buildings, restoring old cars, or creating metal art, welding plays an important role in shaping the world around us. I’m passionate about this field because it gives me the chance to create something meaningful and useful every single day.
What makes welding even more special to me is the sense of independence it provides. I’ve always been the type of person who enjoys working with my hands and seeing the direct results of my effort. In welding, you can literally see progress happen before your eyes—a few sparks later, two separate pieces become one solid structure. I also admire that welders are problem-solvers. Every project requires attention to detail, safety, and skill, which makes it both challenging and rewarding.
To me, beginning a career in welding means taking control of my future and building a stable, respected trade. It represents hard work, dedication, and pride in craftsmanship. It also means joining a community of skilled workers who keep our country running—people who build bridges, repair pipelines, and create the infrastructure we depend on. I know the road won’t always be easy, but I’m ready to keep learning, improving, and mastering my craft.
My dream is to become a certified welder and eventually open my own shop, where I can take on custom fabrication projects and maybe even teach others. Welding has taught me that with focus, patience, and passion, you can create something strong enough to stand the test of time—and that’s exactly the kind of future I want to build.
Track to the Trades
In a world powered by technology and convenience, it’s easy to forget the people who literally hold everything together. From the bridges we cross to the cars we drive and the buildings we live in, trades play a vital role in shaping, maintaining, and strengthening the foundation of modern life. While many focus on college degrees and office jobs, the truth is that the trades are what keep our society running safely, efficiently, and beautifully.
In today’s society, the trades are more important than ever because skilled workers are becoming harder to find. For years, young people have been told that a four-year college degree is the only path to success. As a result, fewer students have explored hands-on careers. But the truth is, trades aren't just a backup plan, they are a respected, high-demand profession that requires intelligence, skill, and creativity. The shortage of trades men across the country proves just how valuable this trade has become. Without new trades men entering the field, industries like construction, energy, and manufacturing would face serious challenges.
Welding is also about more than just metal and machines it’s about problem-solving and pride. Every weld tells a story of precision and responsibility. When you’re welding, there’s no room for carelessness. A single mistake can affect the strength and safety of an entire structure. That’s why welders take pride in their craft. It takes steady hands, sharp focus, and a commitment to doing things right. Welding has taught me patience, discipline, and confidence. It’s taught me to trust my instincts, to keep learning, and to never settle for “good enough.”
Beyond personal growth, welding also connects deeply to the future. As our society moves toward renewable energy and sustainable construction, welders are leading the way. We’re the ones building wind turbines, repairing pipelines, and helping create cleaner, more efficient infrastructure. Welding is part of nearly every innovation in modern engineering. Whether it’s in aerospace, automotive design, or energy production, welders make progress possible. Our trade quite literally shapes the future.
Another reason welding is so important today is that it offers real, lasting opportunity. Unlike many jobs that can be replaced by machines or outsourced overseas, welding will always need skilled human hands. You can’t automate the experience, precision, or instincts of a good welder. It’s a career that provides stability, good pay, and room to grow whether working in fabrication, construction, or even running your own business. For many, welding offers not just a job but a lifelong career filled with purpose and pride.
But welding is more than just a career path it’s a symbol of what makes the trades so powerful. Trades like welding represent hard work, craftsmanship, and community. They remind us that intelligence doesn’t always come from textbooks, and that success isn’t measured only by a diploma. It comes from dedication, skill, and the satisfaction of seeing your work come to life. Welders don’t just build structures they build confidence, careers, and the future of this country.
The trades also give people a chance to find their place in the world through hands-on creativity. Not everyone learns best sitting in a classroom. For many of us, understanding comes through doing through creating something tangible and real. Welding lets me see the results of my effort right in front of me: a clean bead, a strong joint, a finished project that stands on its own. That feeling of accomplishment is something I’ll never trade for anything else.
In a society that runs on progress, welding is what makes that progress possible. From the infrastructure that supports our cities to the innovations driving our future, welders are the quiet force behind it all. The world needs more people willing to work hard, think critically, and take pride in building something that lasts. The trades and welding in particular remind us that no matter how advanced technology becomes, there will always be a need for skilled hands, sharp minds, and people who can turn raw material into something extraordinary.
Welders don’t just join metal they join the past, present, and future together. That’s why the trades matter, and that’s why I’m proud to be part of this industry.
Bick Vocational/Trade School Scholarship
From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with my hands. While some people dream of office jobs or long hours behind a screen, I’ve always been drawn to creating, fixing, and seeing the results of hard work come to life. That’s what inspired me to pursue a trade career. The satisfaction of turning raw material into something useful or beautiful reminds me that real skill, patience, and pride still matter in this world.
For me, this path hasn’t always been easy. I didn’t grow up with all the tools or resources I needed to learn my trade. I also did not know where to start. I’ve always believed that building, welding, fixing, or crafting is a form of art—and that trades keep our communities running every single day.
One of my biggest obstacles was a lack of confidence. Starting out, I worried I wasn’t good enough or strong enough to make it in a tough, skill-based field. I made mistakes, burned a few pieces of metal, and questioned myself more than once. But I kept going. I asked questions, stayed late in the shop, and practiced until things finally started to click. Every project taught me something about patience and problem-solving. Now, instead of being afraid to fail, I see every setback as a lesson that makes me better.
My goals are simple but meaningful: to become a certified tradesperson, build a successful career, and eventually mentor others—especially young people who might not see college as their only option. I want to show them that working in the trades takes just as much intelligence, creativity, and pride as any other career. Skilled work builds our homes, repairs our roads, and keeps our country moving. It’s honest work, and I’m proud to be part of it.
This scholarship would mean so much because it would help me continue my education and focus more on developing my craft. Paying for tools, certifications, and materials can be expensive, and this support would ease that burden while allowing me to grow faster in my field. More importantly, it would remind me that people believe in the future of trades and the value of hard work.
I’m proud of the path I’ve chosen. It’s not the easiest route, but it’s one filled with purpose, community, and pride. Every spark, every challenge, and every long day in the workshop is another step toward the career I’ve dreamed of—and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
