I am passionate about the special education teaching profession because, growing up, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. After coming home from school, I would often play “school” with my siblings, using my own completed homework as a resource to create assignments for my brothers and sisters. When my siblings did not want to play school, we would play church, and immediately afterward, we would transition into Sunday school. These early experiences enabled me to transition into a teaching role naturally and sparked my desire to work with others in a meaningful and supportive manner. As I grew older, my interest in special education deepened when my mother began working at a group home for four adults with disabilities. The individuals participated in various activities, such as going to the movies and bowling. When the group went bowling, my mother would have my dad bring my siblings and me along as well. Simply witnessing the joy that our presence brought to them broadened my perspective and inspired me to pursue a major in Special Education. Through these experiences, I learned the importance of empathy, patience, and genuine human connection when working with individuals with disabilities. I aspire to be a teacher for students who are often overlooked, helping them reach their full potential. All students learn differently, and it is essential to meet them where they are by providing individualized support tailored to their unique needs. Through patience, adaptability, and intentional instruction, I aim to foster a learning environment where students feel secure enough to take academic and personal risks. When instruction is differentiated to meet each student’s strengths and challenges, learning becomes more accessible, meaningful, and empowering. The quote, “I have learned that the purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” by Professor Harold Bloom, is especially meaningful in the field of special education. Many students require one-on-one, individualized classroom support, as they often struggle to feel valued in a general education setting. Serving in the critical role of a special education teacher allows educators to help students feel recognized, supported, and valued in the classroom. By fostering strong relationships and providing consistent encouragement, special education teachers help students build confidence and develop a sense of belonging. Teaching in both special education and general education is not only about academic growth, but also about social and personal development. In my future classroom, I hope to foster an inclusive and supportive environment where students feel respected and empowered. Helping students recognize their own progress, grow academically, and build confidence is the primary motivation for me to pursue a career as an educator. Ultimately, I am committed to advocating for students who require additional support and ensuring they have the opportunity to succeed both in and outside the classroom.
