Growing up in the inner city of Houston, Texas, has shaped me in ways I never could have imagined. While my neighborhood was filled with hardworking families, strong community ties, and people who genuinely cared for one another, it also came with challenges that taught me responsibility at a young age. I learned early that success is not determined by where you come from but by the choices you make every day. Those lessons have become the foundation of my character and continue to motivate me to pursue a future greater than my circumstances. As the oldest of five children, with three younger brothers and one younger sister, I quickly realized that my actions mattered. My siblings were always watching me, and I understood that the example I set could influence the decisions they made as they grew older. That responsibility encouraged me to be more disciplined, mature, and intentional in everything I did. I wanted them to see that even when life is difficult, it is still possible to dream big, work hard, and achieve your goals. Growing up in the inner city also meant witnessing challenges that many young people face every day. Hello my name is Ashton Ray and growing up in my brown skin I learned that challenges are not always obstacles meant to hold us back; sometimes they are opportunities that push us to become stronger, more determined, and more prepared for the future. One of the biggest influences on who I am today has been my role as the oldest of five children. With three younger brothers and one younger sister looking up to me, I have always felt a responsibility to lead by example, make good decisions, and show them that success is possible regardless of where you come from. Being the oldest child has taught me patience, accountability, and perseverance. I have had to mature quickly and understand that my actions can impact those around me. Instead of viewing these responsibilities as a burden, I chose to see them as motivation. My siblings inspire me to work harder because I want to be someone they can look up to and someone who proves that dedication and determination can open doors. Another important part of my journey has been embracing my identity as someone who is both Mexican and Black. Growing up mixed has allowed me to appreciate the strength, culture, and history of both communities. It has also shown me the importance of representation and using my experiences to connect with and encourage others who may feel like they have to choose only one part of who they are. My background has shaped my perspective and given me a deeper appreciation for diversity, resilience, and the importance of creating opportunities for others. A challenge that could have become a setback was knowing that I would be the first person in my family to attend college. While being a first-generation college student is an incredible opportunity, it also comes with uncertainty because I do not have a direct family example to follow. Instead of allowing that uncertainty to discourage me, I decided to use it as motivation to take charge of my future.
