How Mental Health Has Shaped My Goals and Understanding of the World Growing up with a mother who was battling cancer during my adolescent years taught me a lot about what mental health can do to a person. During those years, I struggled with depression while also seeing people around me battle their own struggles in different ways. I would get up and go to school every day, but I did not always understand what was happening with me or how to explain how I was feeling. As I got older, I began to understand that you never really know what someone is going through. A person can be smiling, going to school, going to work, and talking to others while still dealing with things on the inside. That changed the way I look at people because I learned that what we see on the outside does not always show what a person is experiencing. Now, at 23, I believe that no matter a person’s age, nobody should have to go through mental health struggles alone. People should have a safe place where they can talk about what they are feeling without feeling judged or ashamed. My experiences have also shaped the relationships I have with others because I try to be more understanding and not assume that I know what someone is going through. My experiences are also a big part of why I chose to become a social worker. I am currently an MSW student, and my goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I do not want to become an LCSW simply to “help” people. I want to give people a place where they feel heard, understood, and comfortable being honest about what they are going through. I am especially interested in working with school-age children because I know how difficult it can be to experience emotions and situations that you do not fully understand while still having to get up and go to school every day. I want children to have someone who can recognize when something may be wrong and give them a safe space to talk about it. As part of my graduate school work, I am currently working on a project focused on recognizing and supporting school-age children who may be experiencing depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts. This is important to me because I believe recognizing the signs early and giving children the support they need can make a difference. My journey has taught me that mental health should not be something people feel like they have to hide. It has shaped the person I am, the way I see others, and the career I want to build. I hope that through my work as an LCSW, I can help make it easier for people, especially children, to speak about their mental health and know that they do not have to go through it alone.

Being raised by a single parent has been one of the most defining aspects of my life. My mother has always been my biggest supporter and my greatest inspiration. She worked tirelessly to provide for me, often juggling multiple responsibilities to ensure I had everything I needed to succeed. Her dedication and resilience showed me the value of hard work and the importance of perseverance, even when life throws challenges your way. Growing up in a single-parent household wasn’t always easy. There were times when finances were tight, and my mother had to make sacrifices to ensure I had opportunities to grow and learn. Whether it was staying up late to help me with school projects after a long workday or finding creative ways to stretch our budget, her selflessness was a constant reminder of the power of love and determination. These experiences shaped me into a person who values resilience, independence, and empathy. I learned how to face challenges head-on and remain optimistic in difficult circumstances. My mother’s example inspired me to work hard in school and in life, knowing that education would be the key to building a better future for myself and giving back to my community. Growing up in this environment also taught me the importance of compassion. Watching my mother’s kindness and willingness to help others, even when we had little, showed me the impact one person can have on someone’s life. This inspired my desire to dedicate my talents to helping others in need. As a Human Services major, I plan to use my education to make a positive impact on the lives of others. I want to work with individuals and families who are facing challenges, much like my mother and I did, and help them navigate their obstacles with hope and confidence. Whether it’s through social work, counseling, or advocacy, I aim to be a source of support and encouragement for those who need it most. In the future, I envision myself working with underserved communities, creating programs that address issues like housing instability, mental health, and access to education. I want to use my talents to break down barriers and ensure that everyone, no matter their circumstances, has a chance to succeed. My mother’s unwavering strength and love have been the foundation of my ambitions and drive. Her sacrifices and perseverance have inspired me to pursue a future where I can give back to others, just as she has given so much to me. I hope to honor her efforts by becoming someone who makes a difference in the world, creating a legacy of resilience, compassion, and hope.

My mother’s battle with cancer was one of the most challenging and transformative experiences of my life. When she was diagnosed, I was just a teenager, still navigating school and trying to figure out my place in the world. Her diagnosis changed everything. It forced me to grow up quickly, take on responsibilities I wasn’t prepared for, and view life through a lens of both fragility and resilience. Her journey was one of immense strength, love, and perseverance, and it left an indelible mark on who I am today. Seeing my mother face her illness with such resilience taught me how important it is to never give up, even in the face of adversity. She handled every step of her journey with grace, focusing on staying strong not only for herself but also for our family. Her ability to push through the hardest days inspired me to develop my own perseverance. I’ve learned to take on challenges head-on and remain optimistic even when life feels overwhelming. Being by her side during her treatments and recovery also gave me a new perspective on compassion and service. I often helped around the house, making her life a little easier when she was feeling unwell. These moments of caregiving taught me how meaningful even the smallest acts of kindness can be. They also sparked a deep desire within me to dedicate my career to helping others, especially those going through tough circumstances. This experience is one of the main reasons I chose to pursue a degree in Human Services. Watching how the support of healthcare professionals and social workers made a difference in my mother’s journey has inspired me to be a source of hope and support for others. I want to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and help people navigate their challenges, just as others helped us. My mother’s journey has also given me a greater appreciation for the strength of family and community. Her diagnosis brought us closer together, and I learned the importance of leaning on loved ones during difficult times. It also showed me how precious life is, reminding me to cherish every moment and prioritize what truly matters. While this journey has had its challenges, it has also shaped my ambition, determination, and sense of purpose. My mother’s strength has inspired me to follow my dreams, work hard, and give back to others. She continues to be a source of encouragement in my life, and I hope to honor her journey by helping others find strength and hope in their own struggles.

My name is Aja Herndon, and I am a 21-year-old undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Human Services at Gordon State College. As a first-generation college student, the path to higher education has been one of perseverance, resilience, and determination. After earning my associate’s degree in Human Services, I knew my journey wasn’t complete. I aspire to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and dedicate my life to empowering individuals and communities in need. I chose social work because I believe in the power of compassion and advocacy. Growing up in a small, underserved town, I saw firsthand how social and economic challenges can impact families. These experiences fueled my passion for giving back to my community and supporting those who may feel voiceless or overlooked. I want to be a beacon of hope for individuals facing mental health challenges, poverty, and other barriers to success. In my career, I plan to make a positive impact by addressing mental health disparities and providing accessible resources to underserved communities. As an LCSW, I will specialize in mental health counseling, helping individuals and families navigate difficult circumstances. I aim to create safe spaces where people feel supported and empowered to overcome their struggles. Additionally, I want to advocate for systemic changes that promote equity, ensuring that resources and opportunities are available to everyone, regardless of their background. My academic journey has been fueled by ambition and grit, but it hasn’t been without challenges. Coming from a low-income family, I’ve had to make financial sacrifices to stay on this path. Each semester, I’ve worked diligently to maintain a 3.7 GPA, earning a spot on the Dean’s List while managing the responsibilities of college life. These challenges have taught me the value of hard work and the importance of staying focused on my goals. Receiving this scholarship would be a transformative step in my journey. It would ease the financial burden of tuition, allowing me to focus fully on my education and professional development. More importantly, it would affirm my commitment to making a difference in the world. This support would enable me to continue pursuing my master’s degree in Social Work and eventually obtain my clinical license, bringing me closer to achieving my dream of helping others live healthier, more fulfilling lives. Through my career in social work, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the world by creating pathways to hope, healing, and opportunity. I want to inspire others to overcome challenges and believe in their ability to achieve greatness, no matter their circumstances. I am committed to this mission, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my story.

My career of choice is social work, a field rooted in service, compassion, and change. I am passionate about social work because it allows me to address systemic challenges and empower individuals and families to overcome life’s obstacles. From childhood, I witnessed the profound impact of community support, and I’ve always wanted to play a role in providing that for others. Social work gives me the opportunity to be a catalyst for positive change, whether through mental health services, advocacy, or connecting people to the resources they need. My passion stems from a deep desire to make a difference in underserved communities. As a Human Services major at Gordon State College, I’ve learned about the importance of equity and how social workers play a vital role in breaking cycles of poverty and despair. This mission resonates deeply with me. By pursuing this career, I aim to bridge gaps in access and opportunity, ensuring that everyone has a chance to thrive. The journey toward my goals has not been without sacrifices. As a first-generation college student, I’ve had to navigate higher education largely on my own. This meant learning to balance schoolwork, financial responsibilities, and personal growth without the guidance of family members who’ve been through this process. I’ve worked tirelessly to maintain a 3.7 GPA and make the Dean’s List each semester, often dedicating late nights and weekends to studying while juggling other responsibilities. Financial challenges have also required sacrifices. To make my education possible, I’ve had to forgo luxuries and focus solely on necessities. I’ve chosen to live modestly and spend my free time building a foundation for my future rather than indulging in typical college experiences. I am driven by the knowledge that these sacrifices are temporary, but the impact I can make as a social worker will last a lifetime. Earning this scholarship would alleviate some of the financial strain I face, allowing me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies and my mission. It would also serve as a reminder that my hard work and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated, further motivating me to pursue my master’s degree and eventually obtain my Clinical License in Social Work (LCSW). With this credential, I plan to focus on mental health services and support for underserved communities, fulfilling my goal of creating a lasting legacy of service and compassion. For me, social work is more than a career it’s a calling. It’s about showing up for those who feel unseen and unheard, advocating for justice, and ensuring that everyone has the support they need to live a fulfilling life. The sacrifices I’ve made are small compared to the impact I hope to achieve, and I am committed to seeing this journey through to the end.

Being the first in my family to pursue a college degree means breaking barriers that have stood for generations. After earning my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work and ultimately obtain my Clinical License in Social Work (LCSW). Additionally, I hope to mentor other first-generation students and young professionals, sharing my journey and encouraging them to chase their dreams. Beyond my professional aspirations, I look forward to building a family and surrounding myself with the love and support that have been so central to my own success. As a first-generation student, I’ve faced unique challenges such as navigating the complexities of college life without prior guidance and managing the financial pressures of higher education. This scholarship would help alleviate the financial burdens that come with pursuing a college education, allowing me to focus more on my studies and community involvement. It would also be a reminder that my efforts are recognized and valued, further motivating me to achieve my goals. For me, being a first-generation college student is about more than earning a degree it’s about creating a ripple effect. By pursuing higher education, I am showing my family and community that it’s possible to break cycles of educational disadvantage and open the door to a brighter future. With this opportunity, I am not only investing in my own success but also paving the way for others to follow.

I knew I wanted a different path, so after graduating high school in 2022, I immediately enrolled at Gordon State College, where I earned my associate’s degree in Human Services. I am now pursuing my bachelor’s degree in the same field and maintaining a 3.7 GPA while consistently making the Dean’s List. My ultimate goal is to earn a master’s degree in Social Work and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), helping underserved communities access critical mental health resources and support. Preparing for this journey as a first-generation student has not been easy, but it has taught me resilience and determination. Without a family blueprint for navigating college, I’ve relied on my own research, guidance from mentors, and support from college advisors to understand the application process, financial aid options, and academic expectations. Time management has been another essential skill I’ve developed, as I’ve balanced a full course load while striving to excel in all my classes. Additionally, I’ve sought to immerse myself in the college experience, participating in discussions and activities that align with my goals. These experiences have strengthened my sense of purpose and shown me the importance of networking and collaboration in achieving long-term success. Despite these efforts, financial challenges remain one of the most significant hurdles I’ve faced. Being from a low-income family, I’ve had to navigate how to fund my education carefully. This scholarship would help alleviate the financial strain of tuition and other costs, allowing me to focus fully on my studies and career preparation. It would also reinforce my belief that hard work and perseverance can open doors, even when resources are limited. Higher education has already transformed my outlook on life, helping me see the potential for positive change not only in my own future but in the lives of others. As I continue on this journey, I aim to be a role model for other first-generation students, proving that with ambition, drive, and support, it’s possible to overcome the barriers we face. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance; it’s an investment in a vision of change both for myself and the communities I hope to serve as a social worker. By helping me reach my goals, this opportunity would allow me to pay it forward, ensuring that others can benefit from the same encouragement and resources that have helped me along the way.

As a child, I dreamed of becoming a teacher. I admired how teachers inspired their students and created an environment where learning and growth thrived. I would often play school at home, pretending to guide and teach my “classroom” of stuffed animals. However, as I grew older and experienced more of the world, I realized my passion wasn’t just about teaching, it was about helping others in a broader and more personal way. While my dream of teaching has evolved, the underlying desire to make a difference in people's lives remains the same. Today, I am pursuing a degree in Human Services at Gordon State College, and my goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). In this role, I hope to work with individuals and families, helping them overcome challenges, navigate mental health struggles, and access resources that can improve their quality of life. This shift in my career path was influenced by both personal experiences and my growing understanding of the importance of mental health and social support. I’ve seen how access to the right resources and support systems can change lives, and I feel a deep sense of responsibility to be a part of that process. Social work combines my childhood love of guidance with my passion for creating lasting, positive change in people’s lives. Currently, I am making steady progress toward this career. I have earned my associate degree in Human Services and am working toward my bachelor’s degree. Each semester, I have made the Dean’s List, maintaining a 3.7 GPA and consistently passing my classes with high grades. My academic journey has reinforced my belief that I am on the right path. My long-term plan is to pursue a master’s degree in Social Work and ultimately become a clinical social worker specializing in mental health. Although my childhood dream of teaching has transformed, its core essence helping others grow, guiding them through challenges, and making a difference remains intact. I now understand that success isn’t always about following a specific job title but about staying true to your passions and finding ways to make an impact. This career path excites me because it combines my empathy, dedication, and determination to help others with my academic interests and goals. While I may no longer dream of standing in front of a classroom, I know that my role in Human Services will still allow me to teach, inspire, and support people in ways that truly matter.

My journey so far has taught me the value of resilience, hard work, and a clear sense of purpose. Each challenge I’ve faced has strengthened my resolve to succeed. I am proud of how far I’ve come and am eager to continue growing academically and personally as I work toward achieving my dreams.

Life often throws challenges at us when we least expect them, and how we respond can define who we are. For me, this moment came in the form of my mother’s cancer diagnosis during my ninth-grade year. At just 15 years old, I was unprepared for the news that my mother, the strong and loving anchor of our family, had cervical cancer. Our lives changed overnight. While I had always been resilient, this particular challenge forced me to lean on something greater than myself: my faith. Growing up, I wasn’t raised in a deeply religious household. We attended church on special occasions, but it wasn’t a regular part of our routine. Yet, when my mother was diagnosed, I found myself searching for answers and comfort in ways I hadn’t before. I turned to prayer. I prayed for her health, for her strength, and for my family to stay united. I wasn’t sure if I was doing it "correctly" or if it would work, but each prayer brought me a sense of calm in the chaos. It was as if, through prayer, I could share the burden I was carrying with someone who understood it better than I did. My mother’s journey was grueling. Between the doctor visits, chemotherapy sessions, and watching her physically weaken, I often felt helpless. Yet, faith gave me the courage to show up for her, even when I was afraid. One particular moment stands out. It was Christmas Eve, and my mother had just returned from a hospital stay. She was too weak to celebrate as we usually did, but I remember sitting by her bed, holding her hand, and silently praying. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace, a reminder that no matter how hard things got, we weren’t alone. As the months passed, I saw my prayers answered in ways I hadn’t expected. My mother’s health gradually improved, and the family bond that had always been strong became unshakable. We began celebrating small victories, like her being able to join us for dinner or laugh at a joke. These moments felt like miracles, and they reinforced my belief that faith, whether in God, the power of love, or the strength within ourselves, can carry us through the darkest times. Looking back, I realize that relying on faith didn’t mean expecting everything to be easy. Instead, it meant finding strength when the outcome was uncertain. It meant believing in hope even when the odds felt insurmountable. My mother’s diagnosis taught me that faith isn’t just about religion, it’s about trusting that challenges, no matter how painful, can lead to growth. Today, my mother is cancer free, and our family is closer than ever. The experience left me with a profound appreciation for life and a deep understanding of how faith can sustain us in our hardest moments. I know that life will bring more challenges, but I am confident in my ability to face them with the same faith that carried me through this one. In sharing this story, I hope to inspire others to lean into their own faith, whatever form it may take. Sometimes, the biggest obstacles are the ones that teach us the most about strength, love, and resilience. Faith didn’t just help me overcome this challenge, it shaped who I am today.
