Bio

Hello, My name is Airele Muscetta. I am a mom, wife and first generation college student. I got a late start in life due to some troubles growing up. My mom was an addict and my dad an alcoholic. They were never married but separated when I was very young. We moved a lot and I even lived with multiple family members when my mother went to prison. I dropped out of school by the eighth grade because we had become homeless and were living in a car at the park. Soon after that, I had started to abuse drugs and got in to some trouble. Today I am proud to say that I am an active member of a 12 step group and have many years clean! Part of the program is sponsorship, which also helps me stay sober. I also just received my first AST degree in nutrition and dietetics, my AS degree in Nutrition and Food Science and an AA degree in Social and Behavioral Science, at Butte College. transferred to California State University, Chico in the fall of 2021. Here I hope to get my bachelors degree and move forward in becoming a licensed Dietician. I hope this career path will allow me to provide for my family and become financially stable. I have two handsome sons that I am hoping to also provide a different start in life then I received. I hope to help people get healthy so they can have a better quality of life. Also, one thing that is very common for addicts and alcoholics is to gain weight when they get sober. This can affect the way they feel about themselves and I hope to take the knowledge I gain and guide others to a healthier life.

As a nutrition professional with a deep understanding of the intricate relationship between dietary choices and health outcomes, I am committed to empowering patients and their families to make informed decisions that can significantly enhance their quality of life. The evidence linking nutrition to the prevention and management of chronic diseases is compelling, and I believe that education, support, and a compassionate approach are essential in guiding individuals toward healthier lifestyles. First and foremost, my strategy would focus on education. Helping develop informative workshops and resources tailored to the specific needs of different communities would be vital. These would cover the basics of nutrition, including understanding macronutrients and micronutrients, the importance of whole foods, and the benefits of a balanced diets, emphasizing how specific dietary choices can affect conditions like heart disease and diabetes. This would include using relatable examples and success stories to illustrate potential outcomes. For instance, discussing how a plant-based diet can reduce inflammation and improve heart health can inspire patients to consider dietary adjustments. In parallel with education, I would implement a motivational interviewing approach to foster a supportive environment. This technique fosters empathy and active listening, allowing patients to express their concerns and goals openly. By creating a safe space for dialogue, I can help individuals identify their personal motivations for change, whether it be to improve energy levels, manage a chronic condition, or simply feel better in their daily lives. Understanding their unique challenges and aspirations is crucial for tailoring interventions that resonate on a personal level. Moreover, I would work collaboratively with patients and their families to develop realistic and attainable goals. Rather than overwhelming them with drastic lifestyle changes, I would encourage small, incremental adjustments that can lead to lasting habits. For example, suggesting they incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their meals, choose whole grains over refined options, or experiment with cooking methods that preserve nutrients can be more manageable and sustainable. Celebrating these small victories would reinforce their progress and motivate them to continue on their path to better health setting them up for success. Community support is another vital component of my approach. I would strive to create support groups where individuals can share their experiences, challenges, and successes. This sense of community can be incredibly powerful, as it fosters accountability, encouragement, and inspiration. Engaging families in this process is equally important. Providing resources and strategies for families to cook and eat together can strengthen familial bonds while promoting healthier eating habits. Cooking classes and meal planning workshops could serve as practical tools to involve the entire family in the journey toward better nutrition. I know this first hand with my own experience and struggles. Additionally, I would advocate for the integration of nutrition education within healthcare settings. Collaborating with healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, and social workers which can enhance the multidisciplinary approach to patient care. By sharing knowledge about the impact of nutrition on health outcomes, we can collectively encourage patients to prioritize dietary changes as part of their treatment plans. In conclusion, if awarded this scholarship, I would leverage my expertise in nutrition, motivational interviewing, and community engagement to educate and support patients and their families in making meaningful dietary changes. By fostering an empathetic environment, setting achievable goals, and promoting community involvement, I believe we can empower individuals to take charge of their health, ultimately improving their quantity and quality of life. Together, we can cultivate a culture of wellness that transcends individual challenges and promotes holistic health for all. Lastly, this scholarship would help pay for my dietetic internship helping achieve these goals.

Recovering from drug addiction is a daily task. It often feels like I don’t fit in to the professional world and am not worth pursuing my career. However, I have learned that we can grow and change and hope to become a beacon of inspiration to all who may have felt they ruined their lives. We are resilient and offer a unique look at the world at which we have experienced. We have shown adversity and grit to keep going, even when all seemed lost. We do recover and our worth is not wrapped up in our past but what we can offer now.

Excess is killing us. The food we eat amd feed to our children is killing us. The fast ways of life now a days makes it extremely easy and a lot of times necessary to grab a quick processed snack or meal. This way of life is causing damage and I am hoping that with the knowledge of diet and nutrition I can help families live a longer better quality of life. This could stem in to lowing health care costs and radiating disease in the body.
