Bio

As I got closer to the adult world, my dreams of being creative seemed to be slipping away more than ever. I had always been hesitant to declare myself creative due to being a first-generation Asian-American. I was worried that my parents would continue to shut down all my dreams, and I learned how to keep this part of myself hidden away. However, the pandemic-time uncertainty that might have made some people more cautious made me realize just how short and uncertain life can be for all of us on earth. I started rethinking what it meant to live a good life and it all became clear. For me, that would be a life of beauty, health, and integrity. I wanted to inspire myself and others through my passion for storytelling/written media, and the intersection of forensics with psychology. However, because of financial limitations due to my status in this country as an immigrant and my worry about time, I realized that I had to plan incredibly carefully.

In my daily life, I strive to embody five essential traits: strong leadership and communication skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus and determination, and a strong work ethic. These qualities are not just abstract ideals but are woven into the fabric of my routine, guiding my actions and decisions as I navigate both the challenges of the present and the aspirations for my future. Leadership, to me, is more than just guiding others; it’s about inspiring and empowering those around me to reach their fullest potential. In my academic life, I take on leadership roles, such as organizing study groups or leading team projects. I believe that a good leader listens more than they speak. By actively listening to others' ideas and concerns, I create an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute. I also ensure that I am approachable and that my peers feel comfortable coming to me. This allowed me to build strong, collaborative relationships and to lead with empathy and understanding. Resilience is a trait I have developed through years of facing adversity, particularly with the financial hardships my family has endured. Each day, I remind myself that setbacks are not the end but opportunities to learn and grow. When faced with obstacles—whether it’s academic stress, financial difficulties, or personal struggles—I approach them with a problem-solving mindset. Unselfishness is another principle that I hold dear, influenced by my mother’s example of self-sacrifice and her unwavering support for our family. I try to practice unselfishness in my daily interactions, whether it’s by helping a classmate or volunteering to assist others. I believe that true fulfillment comes from serving others. This attitude not only strengthens my relationships but also fuels my desire to pursue a career in medicine, where the primary goal is to help and heal others. Focus and determination are qualities that have been essential in my academic journey, especially as I work toward my goal of becoming a physician. The rigorous demands of studying biology require a high level of concentration and a strong commitment to my studies. I have developed a disciplined routine that allows me to stay focused on my goals, despite the many distractions and challenges that life presents. Whether I’m studying for exams, conducting research, or balancing multiple responsibilities, I approach each task with a clear sense of purpose and determination to succeed. Finally, a strong work ethic is the foundation of everything I do. I have always believed that success is the result of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. This belief has been reinforced by watching my mother work tirelessly to provide for our family, often at great personal sacrifice. Inspired by her example, I have developed a work ethic that drives me to put in the necessary effort. I take pride in doing things to the best of my ability, whether it’s in my academic work, my job, or my personal responsibilities. My future goals are deeply connected to these five traits. I am pursuing a degree in biology because I am passionate about understanding the complexities of life and using that knowledge to help others. My goal is to become a physician, where I can apply my leadership skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus, and work ethic to make a meaningful impact on the lives of my patients. Leadership, to me, means using one’s abilities and influence to uplift others, to guide them toward success, and to make a positive difference in the world. Through my studies and future career, I hope to embody these values and contribute to the well-being of others, just as others have done for me.

Coming from a background where education is highly valued, I have always been driven by a deep desire to learn and grow. As an international student, my journey has been filled with unique challenges that have shaped my perspective on life and the importance of education. Leaving my home country to pursue a college degree was a difficult decision, but it was motivated by a strong belief in the power of knowledge to open doors that might otherwise be out of reach. Adapting to a new culture, navigating language barriers, and dealing with the challenges that come with just being different in this country have all been part of my experience as an international student. These challenges have taught me resilience and adaptability, skills that are invaluable in both academic and personal pursuits. This decision was not just about gaining a degree; it was about stepping out of my comfort zone, embracing new experiences, and growing as an individual. In today's world, there are indeed multiple ways to earn a living, however, for me, pursuing a degree is about more than just financial gain. It is about acquiring a deep and comprehensive understanding of biology, which in turn allows me to make meaningful contributions to society. It represents a commitment to intellectual growth, critical thinking, and the pursuit of excellence. It provides a solid foundation of knowledge. It allows me to connect with like-minded individuals, mentors, and professionals. Pursuing a degree represents a commitment to growth. It is a way to honor the sacrifices made by my family. Despite the challenges I have faced as an international student, I am confident that the knowledge and experiences gained through my education will serve as a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling future for me and my family.
    Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
Persevering through my anxiety while majoring in biology has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but it has also been profoundly transformative. Biology is a demanding field that requires a deep understanding of complex concepts, intense lab work, and rigorous exams. Dealing with anxiety, these demands often feel overwhelming, making the journey through college seem daunting. There have been times when the pressure to excel academically has amplified my anxiety, leading to moments of self-doubt and fear of failure. The constant cycle of lectures, assignments, and exams can sometimes create a sense of being trapped in an unending loop of stress. Being an international student as well, and not having enough funds to pay for tuition at times has been the height of stress and anxiety. However, it is precisely in these moments of difficulty that I have learned the true meaning of perseverance. Each challenge I encounter is an opportunity to push beyond my limits, to confront my fears, and to grow stronger. The pursuit of a college degree in biology is not just about acquiring knowledge or earning a diploma; it is about proving to myself that I can overcome the mental hurdles that anxiety places in my path. Every time I manage to complete a tough assignment or perform well on an exam, despite the anxiety that threatens to hold me back, I gain a little more confidence in my ability to succeed. The decision to major in biology stems from my fascination with the natural world and a desire to understand the intricacies of life. This passion is what drives me to continue pushing forward, even when anxiety makes the road seem uncertain. I am motivated by the potential to contribute to scientific knowledge and to make a difference in the world through research and discovery. I want to be a physician and help others. This long-term goal serves as a beacon, guiding me through the challenging times and reminding me of why I started this journey in the first place. Pursuing a college degree is important to me because it represents more than just academic achievement; it symbolizes my resilience and determination. It is a testament to my ability to face challenges head-on and to keep moving forward, even when the going gets tough. In the end, the struggle with anxiety has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, self-compassion, and the strength that comes from confronting and overcoming adversity. I am confident that these lessons will continue to serve me well, both in my academic journey and in life beyond college.
