Brandon Repola Memorial Scholarship
My academic focus is on visual arts, with a particular passion for animation and film. I am really interested in visual storytelling, using moving images to communicate emotion, atmosphere, and meaning in ways that words often cannot. In today’s digital world, where content and technology shape how we connect and learn, videography and digital communication are essential tools that influence how we perceive the world. I am a focused and committed student, constantly working to sharpen both my creative and technical abilities as I pursue a career in this field.
To actively pursue my goals, I am currently enrolled in a Digital Communication program at Houston Community College, where I am specializing in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. Through this program, I am gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard tools like Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, and Premiere Pro. These tools have allowed me to experiment with animation and visual effects in a structured environment. We are also learning key areas such as motion design, animation techniques, and visual storytelling strategies, all of which are helping me build a strong and relevant foundation for my career.
As part of my coursework, I will be participating in internships to gain real-world experience and learn directly from professionals in the industry. I believe that exposure to actual production environments will not only enhance my skills but also allow me to apply what I have learned in a practical and meaningful way. These experiences will be crucial as I move toward my goal of working in a creative industry where I can produce impactful, visually engaging, and purpose-driven content.
Alongside my creative training, I have also taken courses in computers and digital technology, which support my career goals in animation and visual arts. Whether I am learning basic coding, working with computer hardware, or exploring graphic design software, I enjoy understanding the technology that powers the creative tools I use. I believe that a strong technical foundation is vital for success in modern digital fields, and I am committed to staying up to date with both artistic trends and technological advancements.
My long-term goal is to work in a creative industry where I can develop content that informs, inspires, and connects. I want to create work that is not only visually appealing, but also meaningful videos and animations that tell stories, promote ideas, and support causes I believe in. I am also passionate about helping small businesses, nonprofits, and local organizations grow through effective digital media. In the future, I hope to mentor young creatives, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, and help make the media industry more inclusive and diverse.
Receiving this scholarship would be a critical step in helping me achieve these goals. It would provide access to essential resources, tools, and training that will strengthen my creative and technical skills. It would also relieve financial pressure, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my education and portfolio development. More importantly, this scholarship would support my transformation from an enthusiastic student into a confident and capable professional in the digital media industry.
I am committed to using my talents to make a positive impact through media and storytelling. I appreciate your consideration of my application and the opportunity to share my goals, my passion, and my vision for the future.

From Sketches to Screens: My Journey in Visual and Digital Art
Art has always been more than a creative outlet. It has been my language, my safe space, and my anchor. My journey began with something as simple as a pencil and paper. As a child, I would spend hours sketching characters from storybooks, creating scenes, and pouring emotions onto the page. In those moments, I felt seen and understood, even when I could not find the words to express myself.
With limited access to formal training or art supplies, I sought alternative ways to grow. I discovered the world of digital art and instantly felt the same sense of possibility I had as a child with a pencil. Using borrowed devices, free design software, and public library computers, I taught myself how to translate my traditional sketches into digital creations. YouTube tutorials, open-source platforms, and online communities of artists became my classrooms. Transitioning into digital art was like learning a new language. One that fused creativity with technology, and one I was determined to master.
One of my greatest inspirations was my mother. While she did not fully understand the software I used, she deeply understood my passion. Her encouragement and sacrifices reminded me that my dreams mattered. She showed me that dedication and belief in oneself could overcome even the most daunting barriers. Her faith in me became the foundation of my artistic journey.
When my family immigrated to the United States (U.S.), the world I knew shifted dramatically. We faced language barriers, financial challenges, and cultural transitions that made everything feel unfamiliar. Amid that uncertainty, my sketchbook remained my refuge. It helped me hold onto my identity while adapting to an unfamiliar environment. Unlike back home, where careers in art were often dismissed in favor of more traditional paths like medicine, law, or engineering, I discovered that in the U.S., art was not only accepted but also celebrated. That realization gave me the courage to pursue it more seriously and consider it as a career.
As I continue building my skills, I am now pursuing formal education in visual arts with a 4.0 GPA. An achievement I am proud of and determined to maintain. Balancing academic excellence with creative growth requires discipline and sacrifice, but every project and class brings me closer to my goal: to use visual communication as a tool for impact. I want to tell stories that matter, amplify underrepresented voices, and build platforms that connect and inspire.
Being awarded the Diane Amendt Memorial Scholarship for the Arts would be a tremendous honor. It represents more than financial support, but it symbolizes recognition of the power of art to transform lives. With this support, I will not only continue pursuing my own artistic development but also invest in others. My dream is to one day create a mentorship program or scholarship fund to support young, emerging artists who like me have passion but not always the resources.
From humble pencil sketches to layered digital illustrations, my journey has taught me the value of resilience, creativity, and self-belief. I see myself not just as an artist, but as a visual storyteller who is a bridge-builder by using color, shape, and design to connect people, cultures, and ideas.
Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students who are determined to make a difference through the arts.

Overcoming the Challenge of Starting Over
When my family immigrated to the United States, the greatest challenge we faced was starting over from nothing. We left behind our belongings, careers, community, and sense of identity. Back home, my husband and I were respected professionals. He was an Event Coordinating Manager managing major brand activations in Nigeria, and I was a certified Accountant. But in the United States, our qualifications felt invisible. We soon realized that rebuilding our lives would require sacrifice, humility, and starting from nothing.
We agreed I would return to school first to gain U.S. credentials, while my husband took on any work, he could find which was often inconsistent, physically demanding jobs to support our family. Despite the long hours and fatigue, he never complained. His quiet resilience gave me strength and reinforced our belief that education was the path to stability and opportunity.
Our children struggled in ways we had not expected. The new school system was drastically different, they felt isolated and confused by the unfamiliar curriculum and classroom dynamics. We wanted to provide tutoring support but could not afford the extra cost. So, we stepped in as their tutors, learning the material ourselves and using free online resources like Khan Academy, YouTube educational channels to help them succeed. This experience not only brought us closer as a family but also taught our children the value of persistence, resourcefulness, and teamwork.
They also could not attend summer camps, enjoy birthday parties, or wear new clothes like their classmates. They noticed our limited time together and the subtle differences in how they were treated at school. But through it all, we hoped our example would show them the power of perseverance, adaptability, and faith in a better future.
Initially, I planned to pursue a master’s degree. However, after discovering how expensive higher education is in the U.S., we made the practical decision to begin with community college. Adjusting to a new academic environment was not easy, but I embraced the challenge. Today, I proudly maintain a 4.0 GPA, and I am determined to uphold this academic excellence throughout my studies.
Balancing school, parenting, and daily responsibilities has not been easy. While I focused on my education, my husband worked tirelessly to keep our household running. Our sacrifices and the challenges we faced only strengthened our bond and deepened our resolve. Our children matured faster than expected, taking on responsibilities and showing a depth of understanding well beyond their years.
What once felt like a setback has become the foundation of my strength. These experiences have taught me empathy, shaped my determination, and deepened my gratitude for the opportunities we now have like public education, a safe place to live, and the ability to rebuild our lives through hard work.
Now, as I am applying for this scholarship, I carry with me the lessons born of resilience and sacrifice. I have become someone who does not give up easily, who values persistence, and who is committed to giving back especially to immigrant families navigating similar challenges. Through mentoring, community service, and advocacy, I hope to be a bridge for others starting over, just as we did.
In short, the challenge of starting over in the U.S. did not break us instead it built us. It taught me that true strength lies not in never falling, but in rising every time you do. That lesson continues to guide and define who I am today.
