      Sandra West ALS Foundation Scholarship
At the age of 20, my life took an unexpected turn when my mother was diagnosed with ALS. What began as subtle symptoms quickly progressed into a life-changing reality for our entire family. While many my age were focused on college life and personal growth, I found myself stepping into the role of a caregiver, ensuring my mother stayed hydrated, keeping a constant watch over her, and assisting with whatever she needed. Though these responsibilities may seem small to some, they were a constant, daily necessity—one that required patience, attentiveness, and sacrifice. Balancing caregiving with school was not easy. There were times when I had to put aside studying, social plans, and personal time to prioritize her well-being. The emotional toll of watching my mother lose her independence was immense, yet through it all, she remained incredibly strong. Witnessing her resilience in the face of ALS changed my outlook on life and strengthened my sense of responsibility. It also fueled a passion within me to pursue a career in physical therapy—a field dedicated to helping people regain movement, independence, and a better quality of life. My firsthand experience with ALS gave me a deep appreciation for the role of physical therapists. I saw how crucial they were in improving mobility and easing discomfort for those battling degenerative conditions like my mother’s. I want to be that person for others, helping patients navigate their physical challenges with dignity and hope. My goal is not only to treat but also to empower individuals and their families, just as I wish I could have done more for my mother. Financially, my family has faced significant challenges due to the high costs of ALS care. The burden of medical expenses, assistive devices, and home accommodations made it difficult to focus on anything beyond immediate needs. While I have worked to support myself, my caregiving responsibilities and academic workload have made it difficult to take on additional jobs. I remain dedicated to my education, but financial constraints have made my journey more stressful. Receiving this scholarship would alleviate some of that burden and allow me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of tuition costs. It would give me the opportunity to dedicate myself fully to learning and gaining hands-on experience in the field of physical therapy. More importantly, it would bring me one step closer to my goal of making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Though my mother’s ALS diagnosis changed my life in ways I never anticipated, it also shaped me into a more resilient, compassionate, and determined individual. It taught me the value of patience, the strength of the human spirit, and the importance of being present for those who need you most. I am committed to turning this difficult experience into a purpose-driven career where I can use my knowledge and empathy to support patients and their families. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to continue my education and achieve my goal of becoming a physical therapist. This is more than just a career for me—it is a personal mission, one rooted in love, loss, and the desire to help others find strength in their own battles.
