From a young age, I have been drawn to caring for others. Even as early as third grade, I knew that my future would involve giving back to my community and making a meaningful difference in people's lives. My passion for helping others has only grown stronger over the years, shaped by both personal experiences and the inspiring example set by my mother. My mother has been my greatest role model and the primary influence behind my decision to pursue nursing. As a single mother of three, she balanced working full-time as an EMT, managing a fast-food restaurant part-time, and attending nursing school-all at once. Her perseverance and dedication were nothing short of remarkable. Today, she is a successful registered nurse in the emergency department, and her journey taught me the value of hard work, resilience, and following one's dreams despite obstacles. Watching her care for patients with compassion and skill inspired me to seek a career where I could do the same. Initially, I considered a path in law enforcement as a way to serve my community. At eighteen, I became a 911 operator at my local police department, hoping to explore this field further. While I found fulfillment in supporting people during emergencies, I realized that my true calling lay elsewhere. This realization led me to enroll in medical assistant school, where I discovered my passion for healthcare-especially in women's and children's services. The hands-on experience and the opportunity to provide comfort and support to patients solidified my desire to become a nurse. Currently, I work as a unit secretary/ nursing assistant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This role has given me invaluable insight into the impact nurses have on patients and their families. Every day, I witness the strength and vulnerability of parents whose newborns require specialized care. Many families have waited years for their miracle baby, only to face the uncertainty and fear that comes with a NICU stay. I strive to be a source of comfort and reassurance, greeting families with kindness and ensuring they feel welcome and supported during each visit. Being able to offer a listening ear or a word of encouragement during such a challenging time is incredibly rewarding. One of the most profound moments in my job is seeing a family finally take their baby home after a long NICU stay. The joy and relief on their faces remind me why I chose this profession. Knowing that I played a small part in their journey-helping them through difficult days and celebrating their triumphs-gives me a deep sense of purpose. These experiences reaffirm my commitment to becoming a nurse and continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
