As a first-generation college student raised by a single mother, I have learned the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and determination from an early age. My journey has not always been easy, but those challenges have motivated me to work harder, dream bigger, and never lose focus on my lifelong goals. When I was two years old, my father left my family. He was deployed to Iraq for the third time and had an affair. Since then, my mother has carried the responsibility of raising my two older brothers and me on her own. I have watched her work tirelessly to provide for us, always putting our needs before her own. At one point, she was working 3 jobs to ensure we had the basics. She has shown incredible strength through challenging times, teaching me the importance of resilience and hard work. Although we faced financial struggles and moments of uncertainty, my mother never allowed our problems to define our future. Instead, she encouraged us to focus on our education and believe in ourselves. Growing up being raised by just my mom has taught me independence and responsibility. I understood early that success would not simply be handed to me. I had to stay focused, work hard, be disciplined, and stay committed to my goals. Seeing my mother’s sacrifices inspired me to push myself academically and personally. I want my success to reflect on the dedication and love she has given me throughout my life. Being a first-generation college student carries a special meaning to me. No one in my immediate family has had the opportunity to attend college, so pursuing higher education is a way to break a curse. While the path to college can sometimes feel unfamiliar and intimidating, it also motivates me to succeed because I know how much this opportunity matters. I want to prove to myself, my family, and others that circumstances do not determine someone’s future. More importantly, it will help me grow as a person by exposing me to new experiences and opportunities. I want to challenge myself intellectually and become someone who can make a positive impact on my community. Education can change lives, and college is the first step toward achieving my goals. College is important to me because it represents hope, opportunity, and the chance to create a better future. It is not only a personal achievement but also a symbol of how far my family and I have come. I am determined to succeed, not only for myself but for the people who believed in me when life was difficult. I know my goal of becoming a veterinarian is not going to go to waste. I will be attending Iowa State University in the fall and majoring in Animal Science/PreVet. I am ready for this next chapter in my life. Thank You!

When I become a veterinarian, the first person I will be thanking will be my mother. College is important to me because it represents more than just earning a degree. I am currently committed to Iowa State University where I plan to major in Animal Science-Pre-Vet, and I want to Minor in Agricultural Business and Minor in Animal Nutrition. When I graduate in four years, I plan on applying to Iowa State University Veterinary Medicine College and obtaining my DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine). Scovill Zoo, in Decatur, Illinois, had free days certain days of the week during the summer, and she made sure we went on those days. It was there that I fell in love with animals. During High School I was a part of FFA and 4-H. I have grown a passion for large farm animals. I have many goals throughout my life, and I know by working hard in college I can achieve these goals. After I graduate and get my DVM, I plan on coming back to Illinois or staying in the Midwest anyway and finding a great job at a Vet clinic. I hope to not have a lot of debt when I graduate. My lifelong goal is to open a mobile vet clinic. After I am done paying off any college debt, I want to be able to save to buy an old horse trailer or an old food truck and convert it into a mobile vert clinic. There are a lot of vet clinics that are not able to accommodate large animals and there are a lot of farmers who are not able to get their animals to a vet. I want to be able to help all these animals and farmers or ranchers. I want to be able to make their lives easier and these animals healthier. I also want to be able to offer free vacancies to those farmers who can’t afford proper vaccinations for their animals. I have been on the end of the receiving side from my communities, and I want to be able to give back to those same communities that helped my family. I plan on attending Iowa State University and majoring in Animal Science/Pre-Vet. I have a lifelong goal of becoming a veterinarian. It has been a goal for such a very long time. I know a lot of people say they change their life paths along the way, but I have not. Growing up with a single mother my brothers and I know what it is like to coming from little to nothing and making it work. You strive yourself on dream and goals and ambitions in life. Though sometimes you don't think you will ever really see them. My mother never told us to face reality and never stop chasing what you want in life. She actually said the opposite. She pushed us and told us to pray about it, chase it, and just when you don't think it's going to happen, go after it even more. She wants to see us succeed in life no matter what. Attending Iowa State is just the start for me. I want to further my education onto Veterinary college and pursue my DVM. I do realize that will be an extensive amount of work but, my love for animals far exceeded work. I don't see it as a job I see it as a passion. Animals are just like humans and deserve just as much respect. I want to study more on the large animal side. There is such a shortage of large animal vets in this country that becoming one will help so many people. After college and vet school, I want to join a clinic and pay off all my debt and save to buy a horse trailer or a mobile food truck. I want to convert that into a mobile vet clinic. I have heard and seen far too many farmers that have struggle getting their animals to vets because of their size. Being able to accommodate to their needs would be so helpful to them. Along with being able to travel to the farmers or ranchers, I want to be able to afford to offer free vaccines to low-income families who have animals once a month. With my mobile vet clinic, I can set up in other towns or communities in my area and offer these types of things to local families or even the elderly. I volunteer my lunch hour 3 days week and deliver meals on wheels in our local community, and I have seen far to many stray and sick animals. I would hope to be able to help them as well.
