Outside of volunteering, I enjoy playing basketball and exploring video games, which inspire creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. Kenneth Hartzler Memorial Basketball Scholarship
Basketball has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing when I was five years old, and from that moment on, the court became like a second home to me. I played all the way through high school, spending countless hours practicing, competing, and growing as both an athlete and a person. What I love most about basketball is that it teaches you lessons that stay with you forever, discipline, teamwork, confidence, and the ability to push through challenges even when things feel tough. It showed me what it means to stay committed and keep going, no matter the obstacles. The sport also helped shape my character. Every time I stepped onto the court, I learned something new about myself. I learned how to work with different personalities, how to be patient, and how to support others. Basketball helped me deal with stress and gave me a positive outlet during difficult times. Some of my happiest memories come from playing with my teammates, celebrating wins, learning from losses, and challenging myself to improve every day. One of the experiences I am most proud of is teaching kids how to play basketball. For me, coaching wasn’t just about helping them shoot or dribble, it was about showing them the same encouragement and support that I received when I was young. Many of the children I worked with came from low-income communities, and it meant a lot to me to give them a safe space to have fun, learn teamwork, and build confidence. Seeing their faces light up when they learned a new skill or made their first basket reminded me why I love the game so much. Even though I can’t play anymore because I need to work to pay for college, basketball continues to guide my life. The values I learned through the sport, hard work, dedication, leadership, and resilience, are the same values I carry with me as I continue my education. I work long hours to afford school, and sometimes balancing everything is challenging, but I don’t give up. Basketball taught me not to. If I receive this scholarship, I will use the money to help pay for my college tuition and school expenses. This support would reduce the financial stress I face and allow me to focus more on my studies. It would also help me continue moving toward my goals and create a better future for myself and my community.
      Dylan's Journey Memorial Scholarship
I am a person with a learning disability, and throughout my whole school experience, I had an IEP. My disability has affected me in many ways, including learning difficulties, a poor attention span, and challenges with memory and retention. Because of this, school has never been easy for me. I have always had to work harder than many of the students around me. But instead of giving up, I learned to be strong, patient, and resilient. I learned that my disability is a part of who I am, but it does not control my future. It has shaped me, challenged me, and pushed me to become a person who keeps going even when things feel impossible. Even though my disability has made school harder, I have been able to get this far because I have had many people by my side. That helped me stay motivated. I am very grateful for the people who never gave up on me and who always believed I could succeed. Their support, along with my own hard work, has helped me continue moving forward. Every accomplishment I have made, no matter how small it might seem to someone else, has felt big and meaningful to me. One of the hardest parts of my journey has been trying to qualify for scholarships. Many scholarships require very high grades or outstanding academic achievements. Because of my disability, my grades have not always been perfect, and I do not fit the image of a “top student.” But for me, earning average grades has been an excellent achievement, because I know how hard I worked to get them. Every assignment, every test, and every school year has taken huge effort and dedication from me. Being an average student on paper does not show the whole story of how strong, determined, and hardworking I am. This is why it has been difficult to find scholarships that understand my situation and see the value in students like me. My motivation to pursue higher education comes from my desire to build a better future for myself. Even with the challenges I have faced, I believe in my potential. I know I can succeed because I have already proven to myself that I can overcome obstacles. I want to continue studying and eventually complete a master’s program. Education is very important to me, not only because it will open doors for my future, but also because it shows that I can rise above the difficulties that come with my disability. I also want to be a role model for others who have learning disabilities. When I was younger, I often felt different, slow, or not good enough, even though I was trying my best. I want other students with disabilities to know that they are not alone, and that they can also achieve their dreams at their own pace. Higher education will give me the knowledge and confidence to help others in the future, especially students who struggle like I did. I believe I am a strong candidate for this scholarship because I represent many students who are not seen as “outstanding” in the traditional way but who work incredibly hard every day. My disability has made my academic journey more difficult, but it has also made me determined, responsible, and resilient. I am motivated to keep learning and to prove that success comes in many different forms. This scholarship would help make my dream of continuing my education possible, and it would also show that students like me, average on paper, but exceptional in effort, deserve the chance to succeed.

Something I really want to build in my life is a strong and successful future through education and my own business. For me, building my future starts with finishing my Business degree at the University of Maryland. Education is very important to me because it opens doors and gives me the skills I need to reach my goals. After completing my degree, my next step is to earn a master’s degree. I want to build more knowledge, become a stronger leader, and be fully prepared to follow my dreams. One of my biggest goals is to build my own business. I want to create something that I am proud of something that helps people, brings new opportunities, and gives back to the community. I know that building a business takes time, hard work, and patience, but I am ready for that challenge. I want to use everything I learn in school to make smart decisions, manage money well, and create a business that is honest, responsible, and sustainable. I imagine a business that not only focuses on profit, but also on helping others grow and succeed. Building a business will also give me the chance to support my community, especially young people and Latinos who may not always feel represented in professional spaces. As someone from Puerto Rico, I understand the challenges that underrepresented minorities face. That is why I want my business to create jobs, teach skills, and provide support for people who need it. I want to build a place where diversity is welcomed, where people feel seen, and where they have the chance to move forward in life. Another important part of building my future is staying connected to the work I already enjoy, like mentoring children in low-income schools. Helping kids learn and feel confident has shown me how even small actions can make a big difference. When I build my business in the future, I want to continue uplifting young people through internships, mentorship programs, or community projects. I want to help others believe in themselves the way I have learned to believe in myself. In the end, I want to build a life where I am educated, successful, and able to help my community in real and meaningful ways. By finishing my studies, earning my master’s degree, and starting my own business, I know I can create a future that makes a positive impact not only on me, but also on the people around me.
Kim Moon Bae Underrepresented Students Scholarship
Being a Latino from Puerto Rico has profoundly shaped my identity, my values, and the path I am forging for my future. Growing up in a community that is rich in culture, history, and resilience, but often overlooked in national conversations, has taught me the importance of perseverance, representation, and using my voice to uplift others. As a member of an underrepresented minority population, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges that limited resources, educational gaps, and systemic barriers can create. These experiences have motivated me to work harder, stay focused, and create opportunities not only for myself but also for others who share a similar background. My identity has also inspired my commitment to service. Volunteering in low-income schools and teaching Spanish has allowed me to connect with students who may feel underrepresented or unsupported in their educational journeys. Being able to mentor children and provide guidance in their language and culture has shown me the power of representation. It has reinforced my belief that seeing someone who shares your background succeed can inspire confidence and open doors for others. These experiences have strengthened my desire to continue making a meaningful difference in communities like mine. As I pursue my Business degree at the University of Maryland, with the goal of continuing to a master’s program, I see my identity as both a source of strength and a guide for the work I hope to accomplish. I want to bring cultural awareness, empathy, and a commitment to diversity into every professional setting I enter. Whether through advocating for inclusive leadership practices, creating opportunities for minority representation, or designing community-focused business initiatives, I plan to use my experiences as a Latino from Puerto Rico to contribute meaningfully to the organizations I join and the people I serve. Ultimately, my identity drives me to challenge assumptions, break barriers, and demonstrate that background does not define potential, it shapes purpose. I am committed to leveraging my education, experiences, and perspective to build a career that uplifts communities, promotes equity, and inspires future generations of Latino leaders. By embracing who I am, I hope to leave a legacy that shows other students from underrepresented populations that they too can succeed, lead, and make a lasting impact. I aim to actively mentor, support, and advocate for young Latinos, ensuring that more students have access to the guidance, resources, and opportunities necessary to realize their dreams and contribute meaningfully to society.
      Future Green Leaders Scholarship
I think sustainability should be a top priority in the field of business because the decisions companies make today will shape the planet, the economy, and the lives of future generations. Businesses control supply chains, manufacturing processes, resource consumption, and large scale investments, meaning they have both the responsibility and the power to reduce environmental harm. In today’s world, sustainability is no longer optional or simply a marketing trend; it is a strategic necessity. Consumers, investors, and communities increasingly expect companies to operate ethically, minimize waste, and protect natural resources. When businesses prioritize sustainability, they not only help safeguard the environment but also improve efficiency, reduce costs, and create long-term competitive advantages. Sustainable business practices, such as renewable energy adoption, responsible sourcing, and waste reduction, lead to resilient organizations that can adapt to changing regulations and shifting consumer expectations. Companies that integrate sustainability into their mission tend to build stronger trust with their customers and attract employees who want to work for socially responsible employers. As a future business professional, I believe that the most successful companies will be those that balance profit with purpose, and I want to be part of that movement. As I complete my Business degree at the University of Maryland and later pursue my master’s degree, my goal is to specialize in areas such as management, marketing, or supply chain operations with a strong sustainability focus. I want to help organizations identify where waste occurs and how resources can be used more efficiently. Whether I work in a large corporation or a small business, I hope to advocate for greener operations, like reducing packaging, choosing environmentally friendly vendors, and implementing digital solutions to cut down on paper and energy use. I also plan to use my business education to support sustainability through leadership and decision-making. For example, I want to work on projects that help companies evaluate the environmental cost of their actions and redesign processes to lower their carbon footprint. In addition, I see myself promoting transparency, encouraging companies to measure and report their environmental impact honestly, and inspiring others to adopt responsible business practices. Ultimately, I believe that business can be a powerful force for positive change. By combining my passion for service with strong business skills, I hope to contribute to a future where companies grow responsibly, communities benefit, and the planet is protected for generations to come. I am committed to being part of the new generation of business leaders who view sustainability not as a challenge, but as an essential opportunity to build a better world.
