Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
I didn’t grow up imagining a future in tech. My early dreams revolved around criminal justice—protecting people, making communities safer, and following a path shaped by my own experience as a Salvadoran immigrant with Temporary Protected Status. But when I learned that my status would prevent me from holding a federal job, I was forced to confront a painful reality: my dream had to change. It was one of the hardest moments of my life—but it also lit a fire within me to find another way to serve and protect. That path led me to cybersecurity. At first, I was just a curious observer—watching videos about scam call center stings and ethical hacking. But as I dove deeper, I realized that cybersecurity is a digital extension of justice. I could still protect people, not from physical threats, but from digital ones. That realization sparked a passion I didn’t know I had. Since then, I’ve thrown myself into the field. As President of my school’s Cybersecurity Club, I’ve helped students compete in Capture the Flag challenges, attended national conferences like BSIDES and HOPE, and even presented research on how AI can be used to protect home networks. I also joined NYC Mesh as a volunteer to help underserved communities gain access to reliable internet—a cause that hits home for me, because I know what it’s like to go without resources and still push forward. My goal is to work in a Security Operations Center (SOC) after I graduate, where I can analyze threats, protect systems, and eventually mentor others like me. I want to build something greater than just a career. I want to build bridges for those who come after me—especially young Latinos and TPS holders who might feel boxed out of their dreams. I believe I’m the best candidate for the Chris Jackson Scholarship not just because of what I’ve overcome, but because of what I plan to give. Like Chris, I know what it’s like to struggle financially to pursue something you love. And like him, I believe in giving your full attention to others and lifting people up wherever you can. This scholarship wouldn’t just support my education—it would support the communities I’ll reach through it.
Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Furthering Education Scholarship
Achieving a college degree is more than just an academic milestone for me; it is the key to unlocking a future where I can make a meaningful impact in the field of cybersecurity and contribute to my community. As a first-generation college student and a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holder from El Salvador, my journey has been shaped by resilience, ambition, and an unwavering commitment to growth. I plan to contribute to open-source security projects and collaborate with organizations focused on strengthening cybersecurity measures worldwide. Moreover, I want to bridge the gap between cybersecurity and social impact. Many marginalized communities remain vulnerable to cyber threats due to a lack of awareness and education. I plan to launch cybersecurity awareness workshops in schools and community centers, empowering individuals with the knowledge needed to protect themselves online. Through these efforts, I hope to create a ripple effect that fosters greater digital security and inclusivity. As someone who has faced financial constraints firsthand, I understand the challenges that come with balancing education and living expenses. This scholarship would provide me with the stability needed to dedicate myself fully to my studies and career preparation. It would also allow me to attend additional industry conferences, where I can expand my network and stay informed about the latest developments in cybersecurity. The opportunity to learn from experts and collaborate with like-minded professionals is invaluable for my growth. In addition to my technical goals, I have a strong desire to give back to my college and future students. I plan to return as an alumni mentor, sharing insights and experiences to guide others through their educational and professional journeys. I also hope to create a scholarship or grant in the future to support students facing financial difficulties, ensuring that aspiring cybersecurity professionals have the opportunities they need to succeed. Receiving this scholarship would be a transformative step toward realizing my aspirations. It would allow me to complete my degree without financial hardship, obtain necessary certifications, and position myself as a strong candidate in the cybersecurity field. More importantly, it would affirm my belief that hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to helping others can lead to meaningful success. With this support, I will continue to push boundaries, break barriers, and create opportunities for myself and others in the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity. I am excited about the future and determined to make a lasting impact in my field and community.
    WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
One of my proudest accomplishments is receiving the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence (CASE), the highest honor a student can receive within the SUNY system. This award recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership, research, community involvement, and service. Receiving this award is a testament to my journey—one filled with perseverance, self-discovery, and a deep commitment to uplifting others. My path to this achievement has been anything but conventional. I came to the U.S. from El Salvador when I was three years old, carrying the weight of my parents' sacrifices. Growing up, I believed hard work and good grades would open every door, and I initially pursued criminal justice to serve and protect others. However, due to my Temporary Protected Status (TPS), I was barred from federal jobs, crushing my dreams of working in law enforcement. Unsure of what to do next, I left my four-year university and worked full-time as a FedEx driver for nearly four years, using that time to reflect on my future. It was during those long hours alone that I discovered cybersecurity. Cybersecurity reignited my passion for protecting people. I immersed myself in learning, watching scam prevention videos and listening to cybersecurity podcasts. I am ready to take on each day with confidence, resilience, and the determination to turn challenges into opportunities.
    American Dream Scholarship
For many, the American Dream is the idea that anyone, regardless of background, can achieve success through hard work and perseverance. But for undocumented students like myself, this dream is far more complicated. It is not just about success; it is about resilience, opportunity, and breaking barriers that were never meant to accommodate us. I came to the United States from El Salvador when I was three years old. My family, like many immigrants, sought a better future, one where hard work could lead to stability and prosperity. But as I grew up, I realized that the American Dream is not equally accessible to everyone. Undocumented students face legal restrictions, financial hardships, and limited career opportunities. The traditional pathways to success like federal aid, job opportunities, and even a sense of belonging are often blocked for us. Yet, despite these barriers, I have redefined the American Dream for myself. To me, it is not about following a predetermined path to success but about creating my own. It means fighting for education, seeking knowledge in places where doors are closed, and proving that my worth is not defined by a piece of paper but by my skills, dedication, and contributions to society. One of the biggest challenges I faced was realizing that my immigration status would prevent me from pursuing a federal career in criminal justice, a field I was passionate about. Instead of giving up, I pivoted to cybersecurity, where I found a new purpose, protecting people and communities in a digital world. I immersed myself in research, competitions, and community work, becoming the President of my college’s Cybersecurity Club and volunteering with NYC Mesh to help provide internet access to underserved communities. To me, the American Dream is not just about personal success, it is about lifting others up along the way. It is about proving that immigrants, despite the obstacles, contribute immensely to this country. It is about showing that we are not just here to survive, but to thrive, innovate, and lead. Winning this scholarship would not just ease my financial burden, it would be a testament to the fact that undocumented students deserve a chance. It would help me transition from my community college to a four-year university, continue my education in cybersecurity, and pave the way for others like me who are chasing their own version of the American Dream. The true American Dream is not a promise,it is a challenge. And I am ready to keep fighting for mine.
    New Beginnings Immigrant Scholarship
I was born in El Salvador and came to the United States when I was just three years old. As a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holder, my journey has been shaped by the challenges and limitations that come with my immigration status. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my family made to provide me with opportunities they never had. Their hard work and resilience inspired me to pursue education as my path to success. At first, I wanted to work in criminal justice, believing that I could make a difference by helping others. However, I later realized that due to my immigration status, I wouldn’t be able to secure a federal job, which was a major setback in my career aspirations. Instead of letting this obstacle stop me, I pivoted toward cybersecurity, a field that still allows me to protect people but in a different way. I found passion in ethical hacking, digital forensics, and network security, and I’ve since dedicated myself to growing in this field. As President of my school's Cybersecurity Club, I have taken the initiative to mentor students, organize workshops, and connect with professionals to create opportunities for others. I also volunteer with NYC Mesh, helping bring free and secure internet access to underserved communities, which aligns with my goal of bridging the digital divide. Additionally, I have engaged in research on AI in cybersecurity and attended conferences like HOPE and BSides, where I continue to learn and network. My long-term career goal is to become a cybersecurity professional specializing in threat analysis and penetration testing. I aim to work in a Security Operations Center (SOC) as a Level 1 analyst and eventually advance into leadership roles where I can mentor the next generation of cybersecurity professionals, especially from underrepresented backgrounds. As a Latino in tech, I understand the importance of representation. There are very few Hispanic professionals in cybersecurity, and I want to be an example for others who may feel like this field is out of reach. My presence in this industry is not just about personal success, it’s about paving the way for others and creating opportunities for those who, like me, come from immigrant families and face systemic barriers. This journey is personal. My immigrant background has instilled resilience, adaptability, and a strong work ethic in me, essential qualities in cybersecurity. Every obstacle I’ve faced has only strengthened my determination to succeed, give back, and uplift others in my community. With a degree in cybersecurity, I will secure my future and create a ripple effect of opportunity for others like me.

Despite my achievements, my path has not been without challenges. As a first-generation college student and a TPS holder, I have faced uncertainties about my future and access to opportunities. However, I have refused to let these challenges define me. Instead, they have fueled my drive to succeed and to uplift others who may feel limited by their circumstances. Winning this scholarship would not only support my educational journey but also reinforce my mission to give back. My goal is to continue my education at a four-year institution and eventually contribute to the cybersecurity workforce, ensuring that digital spaces remain safe for everyone. I also aspire to establish initiatives that increase cybersecurity awareness among underrepresented communities, bridging the knowledge gap and fostering diversity in the field. STEM is the foundation of innovation, and I want to be part of the next generation that drives change. Through perseverance, ambition, and a commitment to making a difference, I am determined to leave a lasting impact in cybersecurity and beyond.
    Eleven Scholarship
Success is not about where you start but how far you are willing to go. My journey began when my family immigrated to the United States from El Salvador when I was just three years old. My parents sought a better future, but as a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holder, I’ve had to navigate unique challenges that shaped my resilience and drive. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was realizing that my dreams of pursuing a career in criminal justice were not possible due to my immigration status. I had spent years envisioning myself working in federal law enforcement, only to discover that my status would prevent me from obtaining such a position. It felt like my aspirations had been ripped away, and I questioned my place in the world. However, I refused to let this setback define me. Instead, I adapted. I found cybersecurity a field that still allowed me to protect others and contribute to society. This pivot required me to start from scratch, learning technical skills and immersing myself in a completely different industry. Special Delivery of Dreams Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have faced various challenges, but one of the most significant was navigating the limitations of my Temporary Protected Status (TPS). I came to the United States from El Salvador when I was three years old, and as I grew older, I dreamed of serving my community through a career in criminal justice. However, I soon learned that my status would prevent me from obtaining a federal job, which was a major goal in my initial career path. This realization was disheartening, and for a while, I struggled with uncertainty about my future. Rather than allowing this setback to define me, I took it as an opportunity to pivot and find another way to contribute to society. I discovered cybersecurity, a field that allows me to protect individuals and organizations from digital threats. I immersed myself in the subject, becoming the President of my college's Cyber Security Club and attending conferences to expand my knowledge. Now, I am determined to use my skills to make a difference in the cybersecurity industry, ensuring people have safer online experiences. Overcoming this challenge taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding new paths to achieve my goals. Receiving this scholarship would greatly support my journey to give back to the community. As a student leader and a cybersecurity enthusiast, I am passionate about mentoring others and creating opportunities for those who, like me, may face barriers in their pursuit of higher education or career advancement. This financial support would allow me to focus more on my studies and leadership roles rather than worrying about tuition costs. I plan to use my education and experiences to inspire and assist other students, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to enter the field of cybersecurity. Additionally, I aspire to establish a scholarship in the future to support students facing financial hardships, just as I have been fortunate to receive assistance myself. If I were to promote philately as a hobby, I would connect it to modern interests and technologies to make it more appealing to younger generations. For instance, integrating stamp collecting with historical education can make learning more interactive. Schools and libraries can host workshops where students explore different stamps and the stories behind them, fostering curiosity about world history and culture. Furthermore, using social media and digital platforms to showcase unique stamps and their significance can engage a younger audience. Creating online communities where collectors can share their finds, discuss historical contexts, and even trade stamps can help bridge the gap between traditional and modern interests. Additionally, gamifying the experience such as organizing stamp scavenger hunts or competitions can make philately more appealing. As someone who enjoys solving puzzles and competing in Capture The Flag (CTF) cybersecurity challenges, I see parallels between the thrill of uncovering hidden CTF flags and the excitement of finding rare or significant stamps. The same problem-solving mindset and analytical skills that drive me in cybersecurity can also make philately an engaging and rewarding pursuit for others who enjoy challenges. Incorporating elements of mystery and competition, stamp collecting can become an adventure rather than just a hobby. Overall, overcoming personal challenges has shaped me into a resilient and determined individual, eager to give back to my community. This scholarship would not only support my educational journey but also enable me to uplift others facing similar struggles. Likewise, promoting philately among people offers a way to engage with history and culture while fostering a sense of curiosity and discovery. By supporting both personal and collective growth, we can create a future where knowledge and passion drive positive change.
