Kirk I. Woods Memorial Scholarship
"Imagine leaving the country with so much snot in your face," my brother said jokingly. I immediately gave him a serious look. With red swollen eyes, a runny nose, and disheveled hair, I bade my family goodbye with no idea whatsoever of when I would see them again; I would be thousands of miles away. My father was quiet. I guess he realized that this was reality; the bittersweet transition that would be the genesis of my aspirations was here. An experience I had that deeply inspired me occurred a few years ago when an economic recession set in. The prices of goods in the country became inarguably expensive. Families were struggling to get by with the little food and basic things they could afford, which were even of reduced quality. Parents had to take their kids out of school and companies had to let go of most of their employees because they couldn’t cope with the present financial crisis. Times were hard on my family, and we were all affected on the inside but tried to remain strong for the ones we loved. I had to learn a trade at the young age of twelve years to get some money to support my home as much as I could. My father had barely started his new business and was having massive losses. He worked so hard so his family could be comfortable. He inspired me and taught me the importance of perseverance and a positive mindset. The situation of things changed, and life became a dream again. I remember leaving my country with a heart full of hope, as it was the beginning of a profound journey towards fulfilling my passion for nursing. At nineteen, standing at the crossroads of youth and adulthood, I am driven by a deep desire to lead a meaningful life that extends beyond personal achievements to impact others positively. The words, "Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you," resonate deeply within me, fueling my commitment to pursue a career in nursing. This path promises personal fulfillment and the opportunity to make a significant difference in the lives of others.
Growing up in an underdeveloped area with limited access to healthcare, I understand the critical need for quality medical care in such communities. I am particularly interested in how community health initiatives and outreach programs can be enhanced through the active involvement of nurses. By working in these environments, I aim to improve access to healthcare and educate and empower communities to take charge of their health. My family background, characterized by modest educational achievements, further motivates me to advance my studies and break new ground as a potential first-ever nurse from my community. Through nursing, I envision myself not just as a caregiver but as a beacon of encouragement and support, alleviating pain and instilling resilience among my patients. The stark reality of witnessing preventable deaths within my community due to poor or nonexistent medical services has been a critical driving force in my career choice. In the long term, I aspire to initiate and lead projects that raise funds and create opportunities for young individuals passionate about improving healthcare in our communities. I am determined to use my education and future position to advocate for comprehensive healthcare rights for women, including access to maternal, reproductive, and general medical services. My academic and career goals are not only about personal achievement but are deeply intertwined with my commitment to contribute to a stronger, healthier community.

I am a twenty-year-old who like any other youth, dreams of studying her dream course and having a fulfilled life. Growing up, I wanted to make an impact not just in my life but the lives of others around me. Fortunately, that hasn’t changed in the last few years. Studying in college is just one of the many steps I have decided to take. I come from a place where the educational system is sadly underdeveloped and overlooked by the rest of the world. Obtaining a college degree abroad gives me a better chance at life. In my family, there are not many who have taken their education to the next level. I want my background to be something I look back at and smile at. I plan to study nursing. The chance to be able to ease people’s pains, support, and encourage them gives me such a feeling and desire I can’t explain. It honestly feels nice when I envision myself working with colleagues just to make someone smile or provide a little comfort. Through my career, I can be able to raise funding and give opportunities to youths who also have the passion to make the world better starting with their immediate society and the people around them. I am driven by a deep desire to lead a meaningful life that extends beyond personal achievements to impact others positively. An experience I had to go through to become who I am today occurred a few years ago. Some months into the new year, an economic recession set in. The prices of goods in the country became inarguably expensive. Families were struggling to get by with the little food and basic things they could afford, which were even of reduced quality. Parents had to take their kids out of school and companies had to let go of most of their employees because they couldn’t cope with the present financial crisis. Moreover, the rate of unemployment came to a sharp rise. My father had barely started his new business and was having massive losses. He could barely even pay his workers, thankfully they were considerate and hoped things would turn out for the better.
Times were hard on my family, and we were all affected on the inside but tried to remain strong for the ones we loved. I had to learn a trade at the young age of twelve years to get some money to support my home as much as I could. My grandmother lived with us then and she was barely recovering after an accident that caused her a spinal cord injury and wiped off her memory. My lovely grandmother who used to call me her “darling” would avoid me when I tried to touch her because she didn’t recognize me anymore. Looking back I now realize that my pain was nothing compared to my father’s pain. During that time, I realized the importance of perseverance with a positive mindset and embraced hard work. The situation of things changed, and life became a dream again.
Fast forward to about six years later, I left my country with tears streaming down my face and a heart full of hope that marked the beginning of a profound journey toward fulfilling my passion for medicine. At nineteen, standing at the crossroads of youth and adulthood, I am driven by a deep desire to lead a meaningful life that extends beyond personal achievements to impact others positively. The words, "Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you," resonate deeply within me, fueling my commitment to pursue a career in the healthcare sector. Growing up in a region where the educational system is underdeveloped, I have always been acutely aware of the disparities in healthcare access and quality. This awareness has shaped my ambition to become a person who provides a platform to offer essential medical care and hope to those suffering from inadequate health services.
My goal is to work in underserved communities where healthcare disparities are most pronounced. Growing up in an area with limited access to healthcare, I understand the critical need for quality medical care in such communities. In the long term, I aspire to initiate and lead projects that raise funds and create opportunities for young individuals passionate about improving healthcare in our communities. I aim to embody the role of a community leader and a role model, inspiring curiosity and ambition in the youth around me. I am determined to use my education and future position to advocate for comprehensive healthcare rights for women, including access to maternal, reproductive, and general medical services. My academic and career goals are not only about personal achievement but are deeply intertwined with my commitment to contribute to a stronger, healthier community. I want my background to be something I look back at and smile. Through my dream field of interest, I will be given the chance to be able to ease people’s pains, support, and encourage them. There is a great need for healthcare workers in every single place in the world. I have witnessed people in my society die; due to poor medical care or even no medical care at all. In the long term, I aspire to initiate and lead projects that raise funds and create opportunities for young individuals passionate about improving healthcare starting with their immediate society. Every day, I am motivated to advance my studies and break new ground as a potential first-ever nurse from my community. I hope to be a role model who inspires curiosity and ambition in the eyes of youths. Accomplishing my educational goal will help me take part in advocating the rights of women to access comprehensive healthcare services, including maternal healthcare, reproductive healthcare, and treatment for illnesses and diseases. I know that my success will contribute to a stronger community where people are valued, protected, and respected for who they are. In addition, I want to be a source of comfort and assurance for those going through difficult times because I have experienced what it means to let poverty and your background limit your life aspirations. I remember leaving my country with a heart full of hope, as it was the beginning of a profound journey towards fulfilling my passion for nursing. "Imagine leaving the country with so much snot in your face" my brother said jokingly. I gave him a serious look that wiped the smirk of his face.
I am a nineteen-year-old who like any other teenager, dreams of having a fulfilled life. The words, "Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you," resonate deeply within me, fueling my commitment to pursue a woman nurse practitioner career in nursing. Growing up, I understood the critical need for quality medical care in such communities wanted to make an impact by providing hope to those suffering from inadequate health services. I come from a place where the educational system is sadly underdeveloped and overlooked by the rest of the world. In my family there are not many who have taken their education to the next level.
I don’t expect these lives to have an instant transformation overnight, but a fresh start is intriguing.

Growing up in a region where the educational system is underdeveloped, I have always been acutely aware of the disparities in healthcare access and quality. This awareness has shaped my ambition to become a nurse, providing a platform to offer essential medical care and hope to those suffering from inadequate health services. My goal is to work in underserved communities where healthcare disparities are most pronounced. Growing up in an underdeveloped area with limited access to healthcare, I understand the critical need for quality medical care in such communities.
