FinalistBio
My name is Addison, and I am a student from Southwest Virginia with a 3.6 GPA and a strong determination to build a future in Interior Design. I believe thoughtfully designed spaces have the power to influence how people feel, work, and connect. I am passionate about creating environments that are both functional and inspiring.
Throughout high school, I have balanced my academic responsibilities with working at a coffee shop. I use my earnings to help relieve my parents of the financial burden of providing extras and everyday expenses. Coming from a hardworking family, I understand the value of responsibility and contribution. However, the rising cost of college is adding a significant financial strain on my family, making scholarships essential to achieving my goals.
Balancing school and work has strengthened my time management skills, discipline, and perseverance. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus fully on developing my creative and technical abilities. My long-term goal is to eventually own my own design firm, where I can create meaningful spaces while building a business rooted in creativity, integrity, and service to my community.

Art has always been a way for me to express myself, tell stories, and connect with my community. From a young age, I was drawn to creative projects because they allowed me to see possibilities beyond what was directly in front of me. While many people view art simply as something beautiful, I have always seen it as a way to inspire others and create meaningful experiences. This passion eventually led me to pursue a degree in Interior Design at Virginia Tech, where I hope to combine creativity with purpose to improve the spaces where people live, work, and learn.
My involvement with art began in elementary school and grew stronger through the years. One of my earliest and most memorable experiences was participating in a community mural project as a fifth grader. Having my artwork selected and displayed on Main Street in my hometown of Tazewell, VA showed me that art could bring people together and leave a lasting impact. Seeing something I created become part of my community gave me confidence and helped me realize that creativity has the power to make a difference.
As I continued to grow, I found opportunities to use my artistic abilities in ways that benefited others. I designed the theme for the local sheriff's office D.A.R.E program, allowing me to contribute to an initiative that positively influences young people. Experiences like these taught me that art is not just about personal expression, it can also serve as a tool for communication, education, and community engagement. Through each project, I learned the importance of collaboration, attention to detail, and perseverance.
My passion for art ultimately influenced my decision to pursue interior design. I am fascinated by the way thoughtful design can affect emotions, productivity, and overall well-being. Interior design combines creativity and with problem-solving, allowing me to create spaces that are both functional and inspiring. I hope to one day establish my own design business and use my talents to give back to my community. I would also love to encourage artistic opportunities for young people in rural areas, helping them discover the same confidence and joy that art has given me.
The impact that art has had on my life extends far beyond the projects I have completed. It has taught me patience, discipline, and the value of hard work. More importantly it has shown me that creativity has the power to strengthen communities and enrich lives. Choosing this artistic path has shaped who I am today and has given me a clear vision for the future. I am excited to continue developing my talents and using them to make a positive and lasting difference in the lives of others.

"Be the change you want to see in the world" - reminds us that change does not begin with governments, large organizations, or famous leaders - it begins with the actions of individuals. One way I have worked to change the world around me is by creating a more inclusive and supportive environment at school. I make conscious efforts to treat everyone with respect and kindness, especially those that may feel overlooked. Whether it's inviting someone to sit with me at lunch or encouraging a quieter classmate to share their ideas during group work, I believe these actions help encourage a sense of belonging. I have learned that simple gestures and acts of kindness can make a significant difference in someone's confidence and sense of connection. I try to model the kind of community that I want to be a part of.
I have also contributed through service and volunteering. Participating in community events, helping with donation drives, and offering assistance to younger students have taught me to step outside my own routine and focus on the need of others. These experiences have taught me that service is not about recognition, but about responsibility. Through volunteering, I have gained a deeper appreciation for teamwork and collective effort. Even if my role is small, I know that combined actions create meaningful change.
Beyond organized service, I try to lead by example in everyday situations. I value honesty, accountability, and perseverance. When people see reliability and integrity, it builds trust and sets a standard. I want my actions to reflect the values I hope to see more widely practiced-fairness, responsibility, and respect.
Looking ahead, I want to further impact those around me by becoming more involved in leadership roles. I hope to organize initiatives that address issues such as environmental responsibility and educational support. By raising awareness and encouraging collaboration, I want to help create opportunities for others to succeed. I also plan to continue developing my communication and problem-solving skills so I can advocate for positive change.
Being the change is not about achieving perfection or solving every world issue. It is about making intentional choices each day that align with one's values. I understand that my influence may be small, but small actions can inspire others. By continuing to act with compassion, responsibility, and determination, I plan to contribute a ripple effect. An effect that improves not only my immediate surroundings, but also my community over time.
