Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Uncertainty has been a prevalent theme in my life as of recently. I experienced a lack of stability and continued to live in a tense and unsafe environment while finishing my senior year. Despite this, I continued to do my schoolwork and graduate on time with my class. This experience forced me to grow and adapt quickly, ultimately leading to unexpectedly moving in with my grandparents. Living in these conditions I became determined to continue my studies because I know that in the future they will set the foundation for establishing my stability.
After graduation, I decided to take a gap year because I wasn’t ready for college yet. I had to take time for myself to process what I went through emotionally and regain stability. I took this time to get a part-time job and learn about managing my finances. This allowed me to gain independence and grow as both a person and a student. Time away from my studies helped me realize what I want to do and why.
This upcoming year, I plan to major in Global Studies. While I have always been very interested in travel, countries, and languages, my experience made me think deeper. I realized that with my major, I'd be able to study and one day contribute positively to economic inequality, international conflicts, human rights, and many other crises across the world. Also, I am considering further challenging my education with either accelerated graduation or multiple degrees. I am completely confident in my abilities but currently lack the financial resources to pursue these goals.
This scholarship would allow me the stability to focus on my studies without financial worry, increasing my odds of success. I want to be able to take my experiences and use them to help other people by contributing to economic, political, cultural, and environmental ideas internationally; this scholarship could allow me to reach for this goal.

Uncertainty has been a prevalent theme in my life as of recently. I experienced a lack of stability and continued to live in a tense and unsafe environment while finishing my senior year. During this time I was already navigating through mental health challenges. I struggle with major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, and bulimia which affect me every day. Traversing these challenges while living in an unstable living environment often made senior year feel impossible and never-ending. Despite this, I continued to do my schoolwork and graduate on time with my class. This experience forced me to grow and adapt quickly, ultimately leading to unexpectedly moving in with my grandparents. Living with these conditions I became determined to continue my studies because I know that in the future they will set the foundation for establishing my stability.
After graduation, I decided to take a gap year because I wasn’t ready for college yet. I had to take time for myself to process what I went through emotionally and regain stability. I took this time to get a part-time job, learn about managing my finances, and to heal. To start my path to recovery I recently got a therapist who I talk to every week as we work through my trauma and mental illness. I have also started to enhance my lifestyle by exercising, improving my sleep schedule, and taking medication. I’m still working on some aspects of recovery as it is a long and hard road but I hope to grow my support system and learn more coping mechanisms to guide me. This period of time allowed me to gain independence and grow as both a person and a student. Time away from my studies helped me realize what I want to do and why.
This upcoming year, I plan to major in Global Studies. While I have always been very interested in travel, countries, and languages, my personal challenges impelled me to think about the struggles people face internationally more deeply. Experiencing my own mental health challenges allowed my empathy towards others to grow and now I want to help people experiencing similar things. I realized that with my major, I'd be able to study and one day contribute positively to economic inequality, international conflicts, human rights, and many other crises across the world. I’m currently uncertain of my future career but translator, journalism, and human rights activists stick out to me. Also, I am considering further challenging my education with either accelerated graduation or multiple degrees. I am completely confident in my abilities but currently lack the financial resources to pursue these goals.
