Hello, I am Aniya Cunningham, born and raised in the Central Illinois area. I am so excited about this next journey of life of attending college. I am a successful early graduate of MacArthur High School, Decatur IL. I will officially walk the stage with Honors with my class of 2022 on May 21, 2022. I am ranked #9 in my Senior class of 264 students, as well as a GPA of 3.8!
My mother, JaDawn, has always instilled in me the value of education. That education would take me as far as I desired to go and beyond. I accredit my mother, who is a single parent, for her inspiration and model of academic excellence. My mother was a full time undergraduate student while also being employed full time when I was just a 3 year old toddler. She balanced life so effortlessly, and graduated with Honors with BA in Finance from Illinois State University, Normal, IL. (2008)
My goals are to become a Neurologist. I have been accepted and intend to enroll at Tennessee State University. I am excited about being the first of my immediate family to attend a HBCU. It is my desire to adjust the narrative that is unfairly concluded about inner city Black children. I want to be an example that no matter your circumstances, you are not a failure! I truly believe the representation of African American women is limited in the medical field as a whole, and I am excited to become Dr. Aniya Cunningham!
I am a true believer that God is the one who gives me the ability to succeed in all that I do. Philippians 4:13 states "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me"
Thank you

Life is forever presenting challenges that allows the world to adapt, adjust, and adhere. It is in those moments that we must find the importance and value of even some of the most challenging shifts in life. Social justice is and will forever be impactful to the world we live in. As a young adult, I have seen my community adapt to changes, adjust to more freedoms, and adhere to less biases during these most recent events in our country.
My community of Decatur, IL based on recent statistics, has a population approx. 70,000 people. When it comes to diversity, 69% of the population is White, while 20.9% of the population is Black, 6% Hispanic, and less than 1% are Asian, Native-American, and other ethnicity. I am of that 20.9% population as a Black youth. The concept of social justice is the notion that the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges are fair within a society. Unfortunately, this is not always evident in most places. We all see in our neighborhoods how there is a disparity in resources that are geared towards inner city efforts. Yet, I am grateful for inner city organizations such as The Boys and Girls Club. This is one organization that intentionally builds amid areas that some may call low-income neighborhoods. They cater to less fortunate and attempt to make the differences in children’s lives. The efforts made on their ability to give back makes major strides for youth to be successful. Their partnership with local school district, local politicians, and local churches makes them to be a social justice advocated in our community. As a product of the organization, I am now a high school early graduate, rank top of my class, with a 3.8 GPA, and accepted to over 60+ colleges. I am proud to know that regardless of the statistics, I beat the odd.
I also attribute my ongoing success also to my local church. They are needed for all things social justice. They are often not view as advocates, yet they are for and should be for all people. The Bible instructs us to clothe and feed the hungry. Those who are in need, to be conduit of blessing to them. Therefore, I am proud to have such a strong foundation of church and community to be able to fight and stand for all things equal.
