Sherman S. Howard Legacy Foundation Scholarship
Faith has always been the center of my life. I was raised in a Baptist church, and some of my earliest memories are of sitting in the pews next to my grandmother, listening to the choir sing. Over the years, church became more than just a place I went on Sundays; it became part of who I am. It’s where I learned what it truly means to serve, to love others, and to walk in faith even when life feels uncertain. Being involved in my church taught me that faith isn’t just about words, it’s about action. I’ve helped with food drives, set up for community events, and volunteered with youth programs. One of my favorite memories was when our church held a Back-to-School Blessing for local families. I helped pack backpacks and hand out school supplies, and seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces made me realize how powerful small acts of kindness can be. That day reminded me that service doesn’t have to be big to make a difference; sometimes, showing up with a willing heart is enough. My church community has also played a significant role in my personal growth. It’s where I’ve learned leadership, patience, and how to step outside my comfort zone. I’ve always loved technology, so when the church needed help setting up their livestream for services, I volunteered. Teaching some of our older members how to use their phones and watch sermons online ended up being one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. It showed me how faith and technology can come together to connect people in ways that really matter. Right now, I’m a student at Western Governors University, studying Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. I have five classes left before I graduate, and my goal is to become an ethical hacker or work as a DoD contractor at one of the nearby military bases. I see this as another way to serve, protecting people and organizations from digital threats is, in a sense, a form of ministry. It’s about keeping others safe, using the gifts God gave me for a purpose bigger than myself. Receiving the Sherman S. Howard Legacy Foundation Scholarship would be an incredible blessing. It would help relieve some of the financial pressure of finishing my degree and allow me to keep focusing on my studies and community service. Most of all, it would remind me that faith, perseverance, and a giving heart still open doors. My involvement in my local church has shaped every part of who I am, my values, my goals, and the way I see the world. It’s where I learned that real success isn’t just about what you achieve but about how you lift others along the way. With God’s guidance, I hope to keep serving, learning, and making a difference wherever I’m called to go.
I Can and I Will Scholarship
I grew up watching my mother work two and sometimes three jobs just to keep a roof over our heads and food on our table. She left my father when his abuse made our home unsafe, choosing the uncertainty of single parenthood over the certainty of danger. Although life was often unpredictable, her courage gave me an early lesson in what real strength looks like. That lesson continues to shape my beliefs, my relationships, and my career aspirations today. Living with chronic PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), major depression, and anxiety has never been simple. Each day has been an exercise in resilience and self-discipline. Yet these conditions have taught me empathy, patience, and the ability to truly listen, qualities that shape how I build friendships, study, and volunteer. I know how isolating it can feel to struggle quietly. That’s why I make it a point to connect with classmates who seem withdrawn and to volunteer at campus events that foster mental-health awareness. My mother’s sacrifices and my own mental-health journey have profoundly influenced my beliefs. I believe that safety, physical, emotional, and digital, is a basic human right. I also believe in self-advocacy: seeking help, using resources, and creating supportive networks. These beliefs guide not only how I live but what I’m working toward. I am currently pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance at WGU (Western Governors University). Cybersecurity excites me because it’s about protecting people’s privacy and security, especially vulnerable populations who may already face discrimination or hardship. In the same way my mother shielded me from harm, I want to shield others from digital threats. Mental health has also shaped my relationships. I value honesty and boundaries. I’ve built friendships with people who understand struggle and perseverance. These relationships are mutual support systems, not one-way streets. They remind me that asking for help is not a weakness but courage. Ultimately, my career goal is to work in a security operations center or as a threat analyst focusing on data protection for nonprofits or healthcare organizations. Protecting sensitive information for those who may not have robust defenses is deeply meaningful to me. This scholarship represents more than financial support; it represents recognition that the hardships I’ve endured can fuel positive change. I intend to keep turning my pain into purpose, just as my mother turned her fear into action by becoming a cybersecurity professional who safeguards others.
    Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
Throughout my life, books have been one of my main sources of inspiration, shaping my understanding of resilience, hope, and perseverance, qualities I need in order to achieve my educational and career goals. My favorite books, such as The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, and River of Doubt by Candice Millard, each story teaches unique lessons that influence my mindset and aspirations. The Fault in Our Stars reveals the intense depths of love, hope, and the human spirit. Despite facing a terminal illness, Hazel and Augustus both demonstrate strength and a refusal to allow circumstances to define their lives. This story reminds me that even in the face of adversity, hope can sustain us. It encourages me to remain optimistic about my future, even when my current financial situation threatens to halt my progress. I’ve learned that passion and perseverance can overcome barriers, motivating me to continue my education despite current financial aid hardships. Pillars of the Earth immerses readers in a story of perseverance, craftsmanship, and the importance of community. Follett’s illustration of characters who dedicate their lives to building something lasting inspires me to think about my own ambitions. It educates how dedication, patience, and resilience are crucial to construct a meaningful future, whether it be a cathedral or, in my case, a career in cybersecurity. This book encourages me to be steadfast in my pursuit of knowledge and to see setbacks as part of a larger process of growth. River of Doubt details Theodore Roosevelt’s adventurous voyage into uncharted territory, emphasizing courage in the face of uncertainty. Candice Millard’s vivid storytelling reminds me that venturing into the unknown requires strength, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from failures. For me, this means embracing challenges in my educational journey, knowing they are growth opportunities. It fortifies my goal of becoming a cybersecurity professional, a field that is constantly evolving and demands continuous learning and resilience. These books have reinforced my belief that perseverance, hope, and resilience are essential to achieving my dreams. They have motivated me to maintain my passion for reading, which fuels my desire to continue learning and growing. As I pursue my degree, I carry with me the lessons from these stories, that challenges are opportunities, and hope can carry us through even the darkest moments. My goal is to become a role model for my daughters, showing them that perseverance and education can break barriers and lead to a meaningful, impactful life.
    Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation student is about breaking barriers and building a legacy of resilience. Neither of my parents attended college, and I want to earn my college degree, not just for myself but to pave the way for my children. My journey has been marked by hardship, but also by an unwavering commitment to a better life. I am determined to prove that perseverance can turn dreams into reality despite the obstacles. Growing up, I suffered from many years of physical and sexual abuse that resulted in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite these encounters, I have used my pain as a source of inspiration to push through adversity. My motivation to provide a stable and secure life for my three daughters fuels my determination to succeed academically. Currently, I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance at WGU, where I have excelled in English, math, and science courses. I am also passionate about technology and creative problem-solving. Sadly, I recently exhausted my financial aid, and this scholarship is crucial for me to continue my education. This opportunity would bring me closer to my dream of working in cybersecurity, helping to protect others from online threats. It would also serve as a testimony to my commitment, resilience, and dedication. I am committed to graduating from college and to inspiring my children to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. Not only is this degree an important milestone for me, but for my family as well. I will be the first person in my family to ever graduate from college. Upon completing my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, I will have not only received my degree but also fifteen information technology industry certifications. These certifications will allow me to better market myself for high-level roles, stand out during networking opportunities, and showcase the practical skills that I have gained through my studies and projects. My ultimate goal is to become a professional hacker for a major company like Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, or Oracle. Eventually, I’d like to start my own business and work as an IT contractor on one of my local military bases here in Virginia. This scholarship represents hope and a chance to continue my journey toward a brighter future for my family and me. With it, I can keep pushing forward, transforming adversity into achievement, excellence, and creating a legacy of diligence for my family. This scholarship means so much more than just financial support; it represents validation of my efforts and the opportunity to complete my degree because someone else believed in me.
    Zedikiah Randolph Memorial Scholarship
I am an aspiring cybersecurity professional, a devoted learner, and a community-minded individual. Currently, I am approaching the completion of my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance at Western Governors University, with only ten courses remaining. My fascination with technology started early and has grown into a passion for protecting digital systems from malicious threats and hackers. This drive has led me to prepare for certifications like CompTIA Network+ and Security+, which will help me contribute meaningfully to the cybersecurity field. My motivation stems from a desire to make a difference, not only by safeguarding data but also by inspiring others to pursue STEM careers. As a husband and father to three beautiful young girls, I am committed to breaking the cycle of limited opportunities in my family. I hope my journey can serve as an inspiration of possibility for others facing similar obstacles. I am proud to represent a small percentage of cybersecurity professionals, yet I believe my presence can help expand diversity and encourage others to follow. In addition to my academic interests, I actively volunteer as a mentor, guiding youth in my community, and encourage them to pursue education and careers in technology. I also donate blood several times a year, symbolizing a spirit of service that I hope to instill in my children and community. These experiences fortify my belief that giving back is essential to creating positive change. I firmly believe that fostering a culture of support and service can empower others to reach their full potential and strengthen our community as a whole. Unfortunately, I recently exhausted my student aid, causing an interruption of my studies and the realization of my dream to be the first college graduate in my family. This scholarship would be a lifeline, enabling me to complete another semester toward my degree and continue my journey toward becoming a cybersecurity expert. I imagine using my skills to educate others about digital safety, advocate for improved diversity in tech, and mentor aspiring professionals. Without this support, I fear I may have to give up on a goal that could transform not only my life but also serve as an inspiration of hope for others in my community. I aim to inspire future generations by proving that perseverance, dedication, and community involvement can overcome barriers. I want young people from underrepresented backgrounds to see cybersecurity as a field where they belong and can succeed! My story is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of education, and I am committed to paying it forward through mentorship, advocacy, and leadership in my community. By sharing my journey, I hope to ignite a spark of confidence and ambition in others who may feel overlooked or discouraged.
    Taylor Swift Fan Scholarship
One of the most memorable and inspiring moments in Taylor Swift’s career was her surprise performance at the Grammys, where she sang “You Need to Calm Down”. Watching her step onto that stage, dressed in a vibrant rainbow outfit and surrounded by dancers, I felt like I was witnessing more than just a concert- I was seeing a showgirl using her skills and platform to advocate for kindness and worldwide acceptance. What struck me most about her performance was not only did it have a catchy melody or an energetic performance to match, but the message behind it. Taylor’s voice was full of conviction as she sang about love, tolerance, and standing against negativity. It was a bold statement that reminded everyone in the audience and the viewers at home, that the music was a powerful vehicle for social change. Her confidence and genuine passion made it clear that she wasn’t just performing for applause but for a cause she truly believed in. A cause she needed everyone to believe in and support as well. As a young man navigating a world often filled with division from hatred and judgment, I found her performance inspiring. It showed me that true strength comes from using your voice to promote positivity and inclusivity. Taylor’s ability to combine entertainment with purpose is what makes her not just a talented artist but a true role model. That moment at the Grammys is a testimony to how a showgirl’s spotlight can be a platform for meaningful change.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
Wicked isn’t just a musical; it’s a fantastic journey into a world where fairy tales are turned upside down and truths are revealed behind the curtain of what you think you know. I became a fan because of how this show masterfully combines mesmerizing storytelling, unforgettable music, and powerful themes that resonate with my soul. At its core, Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West, and her unlikely friendship with Glinda, the bubbly Good Witch. What makes it so fascinating is that it challenges the traditional perceptions of good and evil. It invites us to see beyond the surface of appearances and realize that everyone has their own struggles, dreams, and reasons for the choices they make. Watching Elphaba’s journey from being an outcast to a hero inspired me. She’s brave, resilient, and unapologetically true to herself, traits I aspire to embody each day. The music in Wicked is nothing short of breathtaking. Songs like “Defying Gravity” are not only epic anthems of empowerment but also serve as rallying cries for anyone daring to dream big and challenge the status quo. Every time I hear that soaring chorus, I feel an increase in confidence and motivation. “Popular” is a clever humor and has a catchy tune, reminding me that kindness and authenticity are far more valuable than superficial perfection. These songs aren’t just melodies; they’re lessons wrapped behind beautiful music that uplifts and inspires people of all ages and backgrounds. The stage design, choreography, and costumes further elevate the experience, transforming the story into a visual feast that keeps me mesmerized from beginning to end. Each element provides a sense of wonder, magic, and thrill, making me feel like I’m a part of the incredible world of Oz. The thing that truly cements my love for Wicked is its message: everyone has their own unique story, and sometimes the labels we assign do not tell the full truth. It encourages empathy, understanding, and the courage to be different. It’s a reminder to embrace my individuality and to stand up for what I believe in, no matter how terrifying the challenge or goal may be. Wicked has ignited my imagination, strengthened my character, and shown me the importance of kindness and acceptance. It’s more than just entertainment; it’s a call to see the world through compassionate eyes and to believe in the power of dreams. That’s why I am a passionate fan of Wicked, and I know I will carry its lessons with me forever.
    Kyle Lam Hacker Scholarship
Ever since I was young, I loved discovering how things work. I’d take apart gadgets, experiment with software, and seek creative ways to solve problems around the house. I'd often offer solutions to issues at school as well. My curiosity has always motivated me to understand security measures, and I’ve enjoyed using my tinkering skills to teach my family about the importance of strong cybersecurity practices. One of my most memorable experiences involved creating a simple, custom password cracker, an educational tool designed to demonstrate the importance of complex passwords and multi-layered security. My goal was to show my family and friends how vulnerable weak passwords can be, and to encourage good, strong password habits in a fun and engaging way. I started writing a basic program that attempted to crack weak passwords using common lists and simple brute-force techniques. I kept it intentionally straightforward to ensure it was manageable and safe, just a simple demonstration tool, not a malicious attack. I used my knowledge of scripting and coding to design a basic application that could run on my laptop. I organized a family dinner with my family one night. I explained how hackers often use tools like these to gain unauthorized access, emphasizing that strong, complex, and unique passwords are essential for online safety. I demonstrated how the cracker worked by inputting some simple passwords like “123456” or “password”, which are easily cracked within seconds. Next, I challenged my family and friends to create stronger passwords, using a combo of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. I tested against my password cracker. As they watched the cracker struggle with their complex passwords, their eyes enlarged with understanding. I explained that strong, complex passwords increase security, making it much harder for malicious hackers to break into their accounts and/or devices. I didn’t stop there; I went on to explain multi-factor authentication and showed them how it worked. I explained that even with secure complex passwords, multi-factor authentication is an additional layer of security. I also shared tips on creating memorable yet secure passwords, such as passphrases or password managers. The most memorable highlight of this experience was seeing how my family and friends realized how important it is to take cybersecurity seriously. That evening, we all learned something from one another. They were able to learn the importance of safeguarding their personal information online. I myself learned that I could use my passion for technology and cybersecurity to educate those around me and in my community. It was more than a demonstration; it was a means of empowering others, allowing them to take control of their digital security. This experience reinforced my belief that my tinkering skills can be used to educate those who are inexperienced. It also reinforced my love for hacking and tinkering, transforming ideas into accessible and engaging experiences that can inspire positive habits. As I pursue my degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, I look forward to creating more tools and educational opportunities that make cybersecurity approachable and impactful for everyone.
    Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
I’d describe myself as a dedicated tech-savvy learner, as I’ve always loved and valued learning and applying what I have learned to gain hands-on experience. I am a current student at Western Governors University pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, with just 40% remaining until I graduate. I am passionate about technology, and I am currently studying to sit for my CompTIA Network+ and Security+ certification exams with the dream of someday becoming a professional hacker for the government or a Fortune 500 company. By obtaining these two certifications, I will be apply to apply for jobs as a network administrator, security specialist, or a penetration tester. Some of my duties would range from maintaining computer systems, responding to network security threats, as well as testing the security of systems by simulating attacks. Aside from academics, I’m a husband and proud dad to three beautiful girls. I also enjoy traveling the world and creating memories with my wife and kids. In my spare time, I volunteer as a mentor to young men in the community. Mentoring has allowed me to uplift young men without father figures or those in need of guidance. Truthfully, my mentees have uplifted me as well. I enjoy meeting with them and hearing about their accomplishments. I also donate blood a few times a year, which allows me to give back to complete strangers in a life-changing way. My journey hasn’t been without challenges; I recently exhausted my student aid and won’t be able to continue my studies without this scholarship. This scholarship is important to me because I understand the importance of having a consistent commitment to education, my passion for technology, and my determination to overcome challenges to achieve my goals. I am nearing completion of my bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, with only ten courses remaining. Without any scholarship, I will need to drop out of school, giving up on my goal of being the first person in my family to ever graduate from college. Being granted this scholarship opportunity will help me continue next term and move one step closer to graduating with my degree and joining a field I am passionate about. Graduating from college will be a milestone not only for me but for my family as well. I want to show my daughters that knowledge is important, and it can take you anywhere you want to go. My mom always taught me that throughout life’s hardships, people can lose things or have things taken away, but no one can ever take something you have learned. The power of learning is truly underestimated!
