In kindergarten, is when I realized I love meeting people and sharing common interests with them. Learning about anything, whether it was a person or what photosynthesis is sparked my brain, and unleashed my personality. No matter what the situation was; for instance if I was struggling at home, the school was my safety net. Growing up in a low-income house, we did not have much, but we were thankful for what we did have. My weakness in that was the fact I had a million blankets but no bed. When I was younger, my grandmother could not afford a bed for me, and I never paid attention to it--but it was affecting me. In kindergarten, I had an issue with constantly falling asleep in class, I would be so full of energy until I crashed. My teacher, Mrs. Kelly is one of those special teachers I will never forget. Mrs. Kelly bought me a full-size bed so I could genuinely get rest at home. Now I had that mattress for as long as I could remember, but it was not just a mattress. That mattress stood for something deeper in my eyes, someone who was younger bought me a gift that improved my health, just because she wanted to. Even in high school, I carry that with me. As a student who makes sure I am prepared, I always leave extra supplies on me just in case. before My Advance Placement Composition exam, my friend Lauren lost all of her pens, so I gave her one. I know what it is like to panic about forgetting or even losing something. There are even times in classes like organic chemistry, theres a lot going on and a lot that is needed to see. For myself, I learn and understand best in color. My teacher Mrs. Howell allows me to use erasable colorful pens on all my quizzes and test. Some may not like that, but she understands that that is how I learn best. Other peers realize this, they do the same because they learned from me, and it makes learning more fun, and easier. Helping others and yourself is the main concern, but what is the point if it's not enjoyable? Younger kids especially, need to be surrounded my a loving environment, that allows them to have fun while learning. Otherwise, most kids are never going to continue wanting to learn.
Dr. William and Jo Sherwood Family Scholarship
While coming into high school, I knew that the life I lived was not the same as other kids my age. Being a Foster Kid and growing up in a low-income home, I watched several of my role models struggle financially. Sacrificing certain things to be able to get through one less meal was and sometimes still is my perspective. Even though unfortunate as that is to see, it formed my ability to be thankful for everything I have, and everything that I get. As thankful as I am to have that as an aspect of my character, I want to build a stable career for myself, to not have to worry about where my next meal is coming from, or if it ever will. This scholarship will give me the support I need, to attend Michigan State University to study Biochemistry to find the career I will Love for the rest of my life. This opportunity would help build the foundation of my prospering, and being motivated to get through school, instead of worrying about not being able to go, because of the lack of financial expenses. Not only will this Scholarship be a source of financial strength, but it is also giving me an opportunity to escape. For my whole life, I yearned for going to college to leave the traumatizing foster system, and persevere in the life I desire. Going to college is not me studying in the hopes of a degree, it is my savior. Being away gives me independence gives me the responsibility to take care of myself which I am capable of doing. The obstacle in my way is the semantics of being a foster kid. When I go to college, I am responsible for myself as an individual, and I have yearned for that for years. Looking at a glance at life after college, I would like to start my own family. Growing up in the system, I never had the same opportunities or resources that my peers in school had. Although I am grateful; considering It did indeed form who I am, No child deserves to not have clothes that fit them. No child deserves to have to go to bed hungry. Children deserve to enjoy a childhood that is eventful in the way of learning how to adapt to this hectic world. They deserve to be able to laugh and play on playgrounds carefree. They should not be concerned If they will have basic utilities.
      Ken Burnett Scholarship
      Future Is Female Inc. Scholarship
As a girl growing up, adults always told me that if a boy is mean to me then they like me, and to accept any behavior I received from them. Even while participating in science events, if they were disrespectful, I must turn the other cheek. In my school girls were expected to be interested in music, not science--Girls were considered too dumb to understand anything that was not a beauty concept. Feminism is the ability for women to be given the same opportunities as every gender they want to obtain. Feminism contributes to the first amendment right that every citizen is entitled to. My grandmother raised me and my sister alone and persevered through poverty for me and my sister to have the resources for a better future. Coming from a time when it was not seen as acceptable for women to be involved in science, my grandmother always encouraged me to follow my interest and do what made me happy. Whenever an opportunity occurs in my life that can help me gain something, whether it's knowledge about myself or other things I go after it. My grandmother gave me the confidence to not let the conflicts or opinions of others affect me and my experiences. In my community, I am always encouraging women to conquer their passions no matter what field it is in through social media and group projects. As I believe, that we have one life and using it to improve the world for the better should not be dictated by one's sexual organs. In high school, the HOSA program allows students to see what medical field careers are like daily. While interested in STEM, I chose Forensic Science or science applied to the social justice system. I learned and debated on a case, and other teams made comments about my ability to do so, and I solved the case study correctly. The phrase "if there's a will there's a way" provides the implication that if anyone has a dream that they wish to turn into their reality, they will find every step to do so without letting anything get in their way. That phrase does not state that only men are capable of that. Different perspectives provide the window to another world-breaking discovery, and letting that chance be taken to by anyone gives more chances for success which is a win for everyone. Feminism is the piece of the puizzle that makes the foundation of life stable for everyone.
