I am a student attending the University of California. College is an experience I am excited to partake in. I like learning and challenging myself. I am most excited to learn how the electronics we use in our everyday life works, which is why my goal is to become a software engineer and help further the technology field.

John F Kennedy once said, "Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength of the nation." I believe the best way to convince someone that does not want to go to college is to listen to their reasons and be understanding and supportive. College is a frightening concept to many students in high school, me included. This stems from the feeling of a new experience as well as the financial aspects. The process of getting into college, choosing classes, while maintaining a social life is what scares people away. However, having a conversation can easily relieve one of these fears.
One reason people avoid college would be the financial side. College is associated with debt and money loss and people are already wary of spending too much money. Despite this, I would recommend speaking to a college advisor or even the financial department of the school you are interested in. I would describe the different payment methods college has, scholarships they divulge, fafsa, or even loans. Entering college I was paying around $40,000 a year. After finding out how much I was going to have to pay, I was thinking of going somewhere else, but I talked to the College Advisor and they talked about aid to undergraduate students. After discussing with the advisor, I became more aware of the resources that helped me with my financial endeavor.
I would also convince someone by giving them my personal experience. Going into college first semester, I had the same mindset as high school, procrastination is best. Although I quickly learned that this isn’t the best approach to college. Doing a bit of work each day can help with the workload. Despite my best effort I became overwhelmed and fell into a bad mindset. Being away from home left me with no motivation for school so I gradually started failing my classes. By the end of the semester, I had started to reach out to my family and friends, and I slowly started to gain motivation for school. Despite my best efforts I received 2 F’s, 1 C, and 1 B. I was emotionally, mentally and physically, but I knew that wasn’t the way I wanted to represent myself so my next semester (current semester) I got my academic life on track. I organized myself and set schedules and consistently talked with family. All this led to having all A’s and high B’s in some of the most difficult classes I have taken. Informing to the peer, from this experience I grew as a person and was able to challenge myself and ask for help when needed. These lessons are what help people grow and I believe are essential in life. Going to college is an experience that educates and challenges you, you should not be scared to try it for yourself.
