One of the most challenging times in my life occurred a year ago when my father became critically ill. He was diagnosed with septic pneumonia and spent five days in the ICU and two weeks in the hospital. It was a terrifying and overwhelming experience, but it also became a time when I leaned heavily on my faith in the Lord to carry me through.
Everything began when my mother and I realized how seriously ill my father was and rushed him to the emergency room at 3 a.m. From that moment on, my days revolved around taking care of him. I was at the hospital every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., doing everything I could to support him. Watching someone you love fight for their life is an indescribable feeling- filled with fear, helplessness, and uncertainty. There were moments when I felt completely exhausted, emotionally and physically, but my faith gave me the strength to keep going.
I prayed without ceasing during that time- asking God for strength, guidance, and healing for my father if it was the Lord's will. Though the tears were nonstop, in those moments of prayer, I found a sense of divine peace that allowed me to stay present and strong for my family. The Lord reminded me that I wasn’t carrying this burden alone, and that He was with us in every step forward and backward. My faith in God also gave me the courage to remain calm and supportive for my mom when we first took him to the emergency room, who was also struggling to process everything that was happening. Through God’s grace and love and the care of the medical team, my father recovered and came home.
This experience deepened my faith immensely. It taught me that the Lord is sovereign over every aspect of my life- even life and death. He was the only place I could find comfort. When I was sitting across from my dad who was on life support, I was only able to make it through that time because of Jesus. Looking back, I realize that my faith not only helped me navigate this challenge but also strengthened my relationship with the Lord. I learned new aspects about His character and faithfulness. It reminded me that even in the valley of the shadow of death the Lord is my Shepherd and that I lack nothing!
Now, as I step into another season of uncertainty in trying to figure out how to pay for my graduate school, I find myself returning to the lessons I learned during that trial with my father: to trust in God’s sovereignty and rely on His strength. Just as I leaned on the Lord during those long days in the hospital, I am reminded that He is faithful and provides in His perfect timing. While the challenges ahead feel daunting, I know that the same peace and strength that carried me through one of the darkest times in my life will sustain me now. This season, like the last, is an opportunity to grow deeper in my faith and to trust that God’s plans for me are good, even when the path feels uncertain.

I chose to pursue a career in mental health because of my personal experiences and my passion for helping others navigate life’s challenges. Growing up, I witnessed the profound impact that mental health struggles can have on individuals and families. My father’s battle with depression, shaped by his upbringing and experiences in the military, deeply influenced my understanding of the complexities of mental health. Additionally, my own diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder taught me the importance of support, resilience, and the transformative power of counseling. These experiences ignited a desire within me to help others find healing, resilience, and hope in their own journeys.
Becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) allows me to combine my empathy and passion for connecting with people into a meaningful career. I am particularly drawn to the relational aspect of this work, helping individuals and families strengthen their connections and overcome challenges together. I believe that mental health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, and I am committed to creating safe, supportive spaces for others to explore and address their struggles.
My long-term career goal is to become an LMFT and earn a doctorate in psychology. I aspire to contribute to the mental health field not only through counseling but also by conducting research, publishing papers, and writing books. I want to explore innovative therapies that integrate emotional, relational, and physical well-being, ultimately advancing holistic care approaches. My vision is to make mental health care more accessible and impactful for diverse populations, especially those who face systemic barriers to treatment. By combining clinical practice with research and advocacy, I hope to leave a lasting legacy that empowers individuals and families to thrive.
While I am in the early stages of my professional journey, I have gained valuable experience that has prepared me for this path. I have shadowed an emergency medicine PA-C, which provided me with insights into the intersection of physical and mental health. This experience reinforced the importance of addressing the whole person in care. Additionally, I have served as a mental health advocate in my personal life, organizing family discussions to address emotional well-being and encouraging loved ones to seek counseling when needed. Through my academic journey in Nutritional Sciences, I have developed a strong understanding of the connection between physical and mental health. My coursework has shaped my holistic perspective, which I plan to incorporate into my counseling practice. These experiences have given me a solid foundation to build upon as I pursue advanced education and training in the mental health field.
In choosing this career path, I am driven by a deep desire to help others, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a passion for making mental health care accessible and transformative. I am excited to continue growing and contributing to this field, both through direct counseling and through research and education that can reach and impact even more lives.

For me, building this career is not just about professional success- it’s about using my knowledge, skills, and experiences to uplift others and make a meaningful impact on my community.
At the core of what I want to build is connection. I want to bring that same energy into my professional life by helping clients navigate their challenges and find healing. Building a career in counseling allows me to transform my passion for helping others into a lifelong mission of service.
In addition to providing therapy, I hope to build an inclusive and welcoming practice that addresses the barriers many people face when seeking mental health care. My long-term goal is to pursue a doctorate in psychology so I can research innovative therapies and advocate for systemic changes to make mental health resources more accessible and culturally sensitive. By combining evidence-based practices with compassion and advocacy, I want to build a foundation for my clients and community to thrive.

Pushing Our Scholars Forward
I enrolled in the Master of Professional Counseling program because of my deep passion for mental health and my desire to help individuals and families navigate life’s challenges. Growing up in a family that faced significant emotional struggles, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact mental health has on relationships and overall well-being. My own journey with mental health, as well as my father’s battle with depression and other adversities, inspired me to pursue a career where I could help others find healing and hope. I chose this program specifically because it offers a comprehensive academic foundation and hands-on clinical training that will prepare me to make a meaningful impact as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). This program is the next step in my journey toward becoming not only a counselor but also a researcher, as I aim to pursue a doctorate in psychology to develop and refine innovative therapeutic practices.
The knowledge and skills I gain through this program will empower me to serve my community by addressing the increasing need for compassionate and effective mental health care. I plan to use my education to create safe, supportive spaces for individuals and families to explore their emotions, rebuild relationships, and find resilience through life’s challenges. My long-term vision includes making mental health care more accessible and inclusive, particularly for underserved and marginalized populations who face barriers to treatment.
As I work toward earning a doctorate in psychology, I aim to contribute to the field through research, focusing on developing evidence-based interventions that improve outcomes for individuals, couples, and families. By combining clinical practice with research, I hope to bridge gaps in mental health care and provide tools that not only heal but also equip people to thrive. Ultimately, my goal is to use my expertise to strengthen individuals, families, and communities.
Working while pursuing my undergraduate and graduate studies has been both challenging and transformative. Balancing work and academics has taught me valuable time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills. As a Venue Manager, I’ve honed my ability to handle high-pressure situations and lead teams, while my experience as a Medical Assistant deepened my empathy and understanding of patient care. My role as a nanny has shaped my interpersonal and caregiving skills, teaching me to create nurturing environments and respond to emotional needs. These experiences have complemented my studies, offering practical insights that will enhance my future work as a counselor.
At the same time, working while studying has not been without its challenges. Long hours and financial responsibilities have meant sacrificing personal time and sometimes limiting the energy I could devote to my studies. However, these challenges have strengthened my resilience and determination to achieve my goals. They’ve also reinforced my belief in the importance of pursuing opportunities, like scholarships, to alleviate financial stress so I can focus more fully on my education and training. Reducing my work hours would allow me to delve deeper into my coursework, engage more meaningfully in clinical training, and ultimately become the best counselor I can be.
Through these experiences, I have learned the value of hard work, perseverance, and empathy- all qualities I will carry into my future career. Working while studying has shaped me into a disciplined and compassionate individual, fully prepared to make a lasting impact in the mental health field. By helping individuals and families find healing and hope, I will not only achieve my own goals but also contribute to the betterment of society.
Jennifer and Rob Tower Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my life, a consistent pattern of kindness I have shown is being a listening ear and source of support for my friends and family. I believe that one of the most meaningful ways to show care is through presence- whether that means being there during a crisis or offering small, thoughtful gestures that brighten someone’s day. This pattern of kindness has allowed me to build deeper relationships and positively impact the lives of those around me.
One memorable example is when my roommate’s father had a stroke. She was overwhelmed and unsure how to cope with the sudden news, so I drove her two hours to her hometown to be with her family and stayed by her side through those difficult days. During that time, I tried to provide not just physical support by helping her get to her family but also emotional support by listening to her concerns and fears. Just knowing she didn’t have to face the situation alone brought her comfort and helped ease her emotional burden during a very uncertain and frightening time.
Similarly, I remember the night when a close friend was having a panic attack at 3 a.m. due to her father’s manic behavior. Her call for help was frantic, and without hesitation, I drove to her house to be there for her. I sat with her as she cried, helped her regulate her breathing, and reassured her that she was not alone. In that moment, it wasn’t about solving her problems but simply being present and steady for her. That night deepened our friendship and reminded me how meaningful it can be to offer a calm and compassionate presence during someone’s darkest hours.
While these bigger moments are important, I also believe kindness is equally impactful in everyday life. Small gestures, like bringing coffee to friends during stressful weeks or exams, show that I care about their well-being and want to ease their burdens, even in small ways. I know how much it means to receive a simple act of thoughtfulness during a tough day, and I strive to provide that for the people I care about. When my roommate has a bad day, I’ll cook her dinner, knowing that a warm meal and someone to talk to can make a world of difference in her mood and outlook.
My kindness also extends to always being available for calls and FaceTimes from friends and family. Whether they need advice, emotional support, or just someone to listen, I make it a priority to be present and attentive. These conversations often mean more than words- they’re moments of connection that remind my loved ones they’re not alone in their struggles. I’ve learned that being a good listener isn’t about fixing someone’s problems but about creating a space where they feel heard, validated, and supported.
This pattern of kindness has had a profound impact on the people in my life. For my friends and family, it’s built a foundation of trust and reliability, letting them know that I’m someone they can depend on. For me, these moments of being present and compassionate have been deeply fulfilling. They’ve taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and understanding in building stronger relationships. Through these experiences, I’ve come to realize that kindness is not only about the actions we take but also about the intentions and care we put behind them.
These moments of kindness have also reinforced my passion for mental health and my aspiration to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). As someone who has experienced and witnessed the power of listening and being there for others, I understand how transformative it can be to feel supported during challenging times. My experiences have shown me that even small acts of kindness can have a ripple effect, providing comfort, stability, and hope to those who may be struggling. I want to bring this same spirit of care into my future practice as a therapist, helping individuals and families navigate their challenges with empathy and evidence-based care.
In addition, these experiences have taught me valuable skills that I believe will serve me well in my career. I’ve learned how to actively listen without judgment, how to be emotionally available even during difficult conversations, and how to respond with empathy and understanding. These moments have also given me a greater appreciation for the importance of community and connection, which are integral to mental health and well-being. I love serving others. I am passionate about serving others. I want to dedicate my life to serving others.
Though I am far from perfect, kindness has been a guiding principle in my life, shaping who I am and how I approach relationships. Whether it’s through grand gestures like being there during crises or small acts like bringing coffee or cooking dinner, I strive to show care and support to those around me. Through this pattern of kindness, I’ve seen how powerful it can be to simply show up for others, and I’ve been inspired to make it a cornerstone of my personal and professional life. I look forward to continuing to make a positive impact, both in my relationships and in my future work as a therapist, by creating spaces of care, compassion, and understanding for those who need it most.
Redefining Victory Scholarship
Success, for me, is about making a meaningful impact on the lives of others while staying true to my values of empathy, compassion, and perseverance. It’s not measured solely by titles or personal achievements but by the difference I can make in helping others succeed and thrive. I love being a cheerleader and advocate for the people in my life, celebrating their victories and supporting them through their challenges. Seeing people grow, heal, and become whole brings me immense joy and fulfillment.
This passion for serving others is not just a part of my personal life- it’s the driving force behind my career aspirations. Whether it’s listening to friends when they’re struggling, showing up for family members during hard times, or celebrating milestones with those I love, I’ve always found purpose in being present for others. I want to bring this same spirit of care and support into my professional life as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Just as I’ve been a source of encouragement and guidance for those closest to me, I aim to extend that same compassion to my clients.
In my career, I envision creating safe and nurturing spaces where individuals and families feel seen, heard, and supported. I want to help clients navigate their challenges, rewrite their stories, and rediscover their inner strength. Much like the way I celebrate the small and big wins of my friends and family, I want to walk alongside my clients on their journeys toward healing and growth. Success, for me, will be seeing the people I serve thrive- whether it’s rebuilding relationships, overcoming trauma, or simply finding hope again.
Beyond direct client work, I hope to serve others on a larger scale. My ultimate goal is to earn a doctorate in psychology so I can research innovative therapeutic approaches that address emotional and relational challenges. I want to contribute to the advancement of mental health care, making it more accessible and effective for diverse populations. A dream of mine is to write books so mental health techniques can be easily accessible to all- especially those who cannot afford counseling. By combining my personal understanding of human connection with professional expertise, I hope to empower others to succeed in their journeys toward wholeness.
This opportunity is a critical step toward achieving my vision of success. Graduate school, which I am entirely funding myself, will last until to May 2027, and this support would alleviate the financial burden, allowing me to fully focus on my studies and clinical training. This program will provide the foundation for my journey to becoming an LMFT, equipping me with the skills and tools to support individuals, couples, and families effectively.
Furthermore, this opportunity will enable me to bring the care and encouragement I offer in my personal life into a professional context. In my friendships and family relationships, I’ve always strived to uplift those around me- whether it’s through being a listening ear, offering guidance, or simply showing up when I’m needed. I want to channel this same dedication into my career, building a practice centered on empathy, empowerment, and holistic healing.
Additionally, this support will help pave the way for my long-term goal of earning a doctorate in psychology. Advanced education will allow me to conduct meaningful research, develop new therapeutic techniques, and advocate for systemic improvements in mental health care. I want my work to not only help individuals but also contribute to the broader mission of making mental health care more accessible and impactful.
Finally, this scholarship opportunity would be a tremendous support in my journey to becoming a LMFT. Currently, I will have to work long hours to fund my graduate education, which can sometimes limit the time and energy I can dedicate to my studies and clinical training. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to reduce my work hours and fully focus on developing the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in my field. By alleviating some of the financial burden, this opportunity would enable me to prioritize my education and hands-on training, ensuring I can graduate fully prepared to serve individuals, couples, and families effectively. Ultimately, this support would help me become the best LMFT I can be, ready to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those I serve.
Success, for me, is about service- helping others find hope, healing, and fulfillment in their lives. This opportunity represents an essential step in making that vision a reality, allowing me to combine my personal passion for supporting others with professional expertise to create a meaningful and lasting impact.
Bookshelf to Big Screen Scholarship
My favorite book-to-film adaptation is Greta Gerwig’s 2019 version of Little Women. Louisa May Alcott’s timeless story of the March sisters has resonated with me since I first read the book in 4th grade, which I’ve now read nine times. Gerwig’s adaptation brought the characters and their world to life in a way that felt both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. The film didn’t just translate the book onto the screen- it reimagined it in a way that felt transformative.
What makes this adaptation so special to me is the way it captured the heart of the story while adding new layers of complexity to the characters, especially Amy March. Amy is often reduced to being vain or self-centered. However, Gerwig’s film gave her the character development she deserved, allowing her to shine as a multifaceted, ambitious, and deeply thoughtful person. Florence Pugh’s portrayal of Amy highlighted her vulnerabilities, dreams, and practicality, making her not only relatable but also admirable in her own right. The scene where Amy explains her reasoning for marrying well, not just for love but as a financial necessity in her time, provided a nuanced perspective on her decisions that had been misunderstood or oversimplified before. This insight into Amy’s character changed how I viewed her and made me appreciate the complexity of her choices.
One of the most powerful elements of the film was its portrayal of Jo March’s internal conflict. As a reader, I had always admired Jo’s independence and passion for writing, but seeing her journey on screen brought a new level of emotional resonance. Saoirse Ronan’s performance made Jo’s struggles with societal expectations, personal identity, and creative fulfillment feel more vivid and personal. The moment when Jo confesses her loneliness and longing for connection is especially poignant, as it added emotional depth to a character who had always been a symbol of resilience to me. It was a reminder that strength and vulnerability can coexist, a theme that resonates deeply in both the book and the film.
Another reason Little Women stands out as my favorite adaptation is how it visually captured the essence of the story. The film’s warm, golden tones and intricate period details brought the March family’s world to life in a way that felt immersive and comforting, almost like stepping into the pages of the book. At the same time, the use of subtle modern touches, like Gerwig’s dialogue and pacing, bridged the gap between the 19th-century setting and contemporary audiences. It made the story feel timeless and relevant.
For me, the film didn’t just adapt the book- it enriched it. Watching the movie after reading the book felt like revisiting an old friend with a new perspective. It allowed me to appreciate Alcott’s story in a different light, while also reinforcing the themes that had made the book so meaningful to me through nine readings. The connection between reading and viewing became a cycle of reflection and discovery, as the film deepened my understanding of the book and vice versa.
Ultimately, Greta Gerwig’s Little Women is special to me because it honors the spirit of the original story while breathing new life into it. It bridged the gap between reading and viewing by staying true to the book’s emotional core while inviting me to experience the March sisters’ journey in a new, powerful way. With its compelling character development, particularly for Amy, and its visually stunning and emotionally resonant storytelling, this adaptation remains a favorite and a reminder of how timeless stories can evolve and continue to inspire new generations.
Team USA Fan Scholarship
My favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA is Ilona Maher. As a standout in the world of rugby, Ilona has captured the hearts of fans with her incredible athleticism, determination, and vibrant personality. Watching her play is electrifying- her strength, speed, and skill on the field embody the spirit of excellence and teamwork that Team USA represents. Ilona has been instrumental in elevating women’s rugby, helping the sport gain visibility and inspiring countless young athletes to pursue their dreams.
What makes Ilona even more admirable is her authenticity and humor off the field. Through her social media presence, she connects with fans in a genuine way, sharing the highs and lows of being an elite athlete. Her recent appearance on Dancing with the Stars showcased another side of her talent and determination, proving that athletes can excel across different platforms while bringing their unique charisma to new audiences. Watching her embrace dance with the same confidence and energy she brings to rugby is inspiring and reflects her willingness to step out of her comfort zone.
Ilona is also a powerful advocate for body positivity, promoting the message that women can come in strong, diverse shapes and sizes. She uses her platform to challenge stereotypes and inspire confidence in others, showing that strength, beauty, and athleticism can take many forms. This message resonates deeply in a world that often holds women to unrealistic standards, and it’s part of what makes Ilona such a compelling role model.
Her ability to balance competitiveness with relatability is a testament to her character. Ilona Maher isn’t just a phenomenal athlete; she’s a force of inspiration, proving that hard work, authenticity, and self-love can lead to extraordinary success. Cheering for Ilona is cheering for the best of what Team USA represents: grit, grace, and empowerment.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
A lyric from Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS that resonates deeply with my own teenage experience is from the song “Teenage Dream”: "They all say that it gets better, it gets better the more you grow. Yeah, they all say that it gets better, it gets better, but what if I don’t?" This lyric captures the raw uncertainty and fear that often defines adolescence, a time when the pressure to "have it all figured out" feels overwhelming and self-doubt looms large.
For me, this lyric perfectly encapsulates the emotional turbulence of my teenage years. I struggled with balancing academic expectations, managing complicated family dynamics, and navigating my own mental health. Like many teens, I often felt a quiet pressure to meet societal and personal milestones, to grow into a version of myself that others expected. Yet, there were moments when I wondered if I would ever truly feel "better" or if I was destined to be stuck in those feelings of self-doubt and insecurity.
What makes this lyric so powerful is its honesty- it gives voice to the fears we hesitate to express out loud. Adolescence is a time of constant transition, where every success feels fleeting, and every failure feels monumental. For me, hearing this lyric brought comfort in knowing that these fears are universal, even if they feel isolating at the time.
Now, looking back on those years, I realize that the struggles captured by this lyric shaped me into a more empathetic and resilient person. They taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of extending grace to myself during challenging times. Olivia Rodrigo’s words remind me how important it is to honor those emotions and validate the experiences of others who might be going through similar struggles. Adolescence is messy and uncertain, but it’s also full of growth and self-discovery, a truth beautifully encapsulated in this lyric.
This understanding is the foundation of my passion for helping teenage girls as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I want to provide the kind of support and guidance I once needed- to be a safe space where teenage girls can express their fears, insecurities, and dreams without judgment. Adolescence is a pivotal time, and I aim to help them navigate its challenges while empowering them to develop resilience, confidence, and self-compassion.
Teenage girls face unique pressures, from societal expectations and academic demands to the often overwhelming influence of social media. Many struggle with self-esteem, identity, and the weight of “figuring it all out” before they’re ready. My goal as an LMFT is to help these young women recognize their worth beyond external validation and build a strong foundation of emotional intelligence. I want to be the person who reassures them that it’s okay to feel uncertain, to not have all the answers. By addressing issues like anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and identity confusion, I hope to guide teenage girls toward understanding and embracing their unique strengths. I want to equip them with tools to navigate their emotions, communicate effectively, and build healthy relationships with themselves and others.
Helping teenage girls thrive is not just a career goal for me- it’s a mission rooted in my own journey much like Olivia's lyrics. I know firsthand how impactful it can be to have someone who believes in you and sees your potential, even when you can’t see it yourself. Through my work as an LMFT, I want to be that source of support and encouragement, helping young women turn their doubts into strengths and their fears into growth.
Future Leaders Scholarship
One of the most significant times I demonstrated leadership was during my tenure as President of OSU Worthy, a student organization at Oklahoma State University. Leading this organization was both a challenging and rewarding experience, particularly when planning and executing a large-scale conference for 300 attendees. The success of this event required not only logistical precision but also the ability to inspire and coordinate a team of six members while navigating challenges, managing a $20,000 budget, and staying aligned with our mission.
One of the greatest challenges I faced was addressing team conflict. With so many responsibilities and deadlines, tensions occasionally rose among team members regarding task delegation and priorities. As President, I knew that much of the responsibility for resolving these conflicts fell on me. I focused on creating an environment of trust and open communication, ensuring every team member felt heard and valued. I held one-on-one meetings to understand individual concerns and mediated group discussions to foster collaboration and find solutions. By practicing empathy and encouraging constructive dialogue, I was able to redirect the team’s energy toward our shared goals, strengthening our dynamic and improving productivity.
The financial responsibility of managing a $20,000 budget added another layer of pressure. Every decision had to be carefully considered to ensure we were maximizing resources while staying within budget constraints. I worked closely with the treasurer to allocate funds efficiently, negotiate with vendors, and track expenses. Balancing these financial obligations alongside the logistical and interpersonal challenges was no small feat, but it taught me the importance of organization, attention to detail, and accountability.
Another challenge was securing partnerships with sponsors, speakers, and community members to elevate the conference’s profile and provide attendees with an enriching experience. This required adaptability, strategic thinking, and effective networking. By cultivating strong relationships and clearly communicating the value of our event, I was able to secure sponsorships and resources that enhanced the conference and helped us exceed attendance and satisfaction goals.
Ultimately, the experience taught me the value of resilience and leadership under pressure. As President, I often felt the weight of the organization’s success resting on my shoulders. Every decision, from conflict resolution to financial oversight, impacted the event’s outcome. While it was a tremendous responsibility, it also reinforced my passion for leadership and service. Seeing the conference come together and receiving positive feedback from attendees was incredibly fulfilling, affirming my belief in the importance of teamwork, empathy, and clear communication.
As I move forward in my career, I plan to apply these leadership skills to my goal of becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Just as I supported and guided my team during challenging times, I hope to empower individuals and families in my practice by fostering trust, providing clear guidance, and helping them navigate their struggles. Leadership in therapy involves not only guiding others but also creating safe, supportive spaces for growth and healing. My experience as President of OSU Worthy has equipped me with the skills, resilience, and perspective to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others and my community.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
My top three Billie Eilish songs are "when the party’s over", "No Time to Die", and "What Was I Made For?". Billie’s artistry lies in her ability to express complex feelings with raw honesty, making her music both deeply personal and universally relatable. These three songs hold a special place in my heart because they mirror my own experiences and provide comfort and understanding.
"when the party’s over" stands out to me as a hauntingly beautiful expression of emotional vulnerability. The song’s minimalist production and Billie’s ethereal vocals create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and devastating. The lyrics explore the pain of letting go, whether it’s of a relationship, a dream, or even a version of yourself. For me, this song resonates with moments in my life when I’ve had to confront loss or endings. There’s a line between wanting to hold on and knowing you need to let go, and Billie captures that tension perfectly. Listening to this song reminds me of the strength it takes to make those difficult decisions, even when they feel heartbreaking. It’s a testament to the courage needed to walk away for your own well-being, and it inspires me to face those moments with honesty and grace.
"No Time to Die" is another song that speaks to me deeply. Its cinematic quality, with sweeping orchestration and Billie’s signature understated delivery, creates a mood that is both somber and powerful. The song explores themes of betrayal, disillusionment, and resilience- feelings that are all too familiar. There are times in life when you trust someone or invest in something, only to find that it wasn’t what you thought it was. This song captures the heartbreak of those moments but also the strength to rise above them. The lyrics, “Fool me once, fool me twice, are you death or paradise?” reflect the internal conflict of trusting again after being let down. For me, no time to die is not just about heartbreak- it’s about reclaiming your power and moving forward with dignity. It’s a reminder that even in moments of betrayal, you can find strength and refuse to be defined by what hurt you.
"What Was I Made For?" is perhaps the song that resonates with me most on a philosophical level. The song explores themes of identity, purpose, and existential questioning, feelings I’ve grappled with throughout different phases of my life. The lyrics, “I don’t know how to feel, but I wanna try,” perfectly capture the uncertainty and yearning that come with searching for meaning. In a world that often demands answers and direction, this song reminds me that it’s okay to not have everything figured out. Billie’s gentle, reflective delivery makes the song feel like a quiet conversation with yourself, a space to confront doubts and fears without judgment. For me, this song is a source of comfort when I feel lost or uncertain. It reminds that it’s okay to embrace the questions instead of rushing to find the answers.
What ties these songs together is Billie Eilish’s ability to communicate universal emotions with raw authenticity. Her lyrics feel deeply personal, yet they speak to experiences we all share- loss, betrayal, and the search for meaning. Each of these songs captures a different aspect of human emotion, creating a connection between the listener and the artist. For me, these songs are more than just music- they’re a reflection of life’s complexities and a reminder that it’s okay to feel deeply. Billie’s artistry is a gift to her listeners, offering not just entertainment but a profound emotional connection that resonates long after the music ends.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
Love Island’s “Flaming Hearts Obstacle Race” is a dynamic and action-packed challenge designed to test couples’ communication, trust, and teamwork while igniting a sense of fun and camaraderie. Set in the iconic villa, this challenge combines physical obstacles, fiery trivia, and a touch of romantic drama to reveal which couples truly have what it takes to work together and overcome challenges as a team.
The setting for this challenge is an obstacle course themed around the concept of “keeping the flame alive.” The course features larger-than-life flaming heart props, red and orange decor, and obstacles inspired by the ups and downs of relationships. Each couple must navigate the course while holding a giant inflatable flaming heart, symbolizing their relationship. The challenge is a race against time, with the fastest couple crowned as the winners.
The challenge begins with couples starting at the “Ignition Zone,” where they light their symbolic flame by answering a relationship trivia question correctly. These questions range from playful (e.g., “What’s your partner’s favorite dessert?”) to revealing (e.g., “What’s one thing your partner wants to improve in a relationship?”). Each correct answer earns the couple a 10-second head start on the course, while incorrect answers add a 5-second penalty.
From there, the couples must navigate through several themed sections of the obstacle course:
“The Honeymoon Phase” Slide:
A giant, slippery slope represents the thrilling but fast-moving nature of the honeymoon phase. Both partners must work together to climb the slippery incline without dropping their flaming heart.
“The Communication Cave”:
A dark, narrow tunnel where one partner must guide the other through using only verbal instructions. This section emphasizes trust and communication, as they must avoid obstacles while protecting their flaming heart from being punctured by spiky props.
“The Bumpy Road”:
A bouncy path of uneven inflatables simulates the unpredictable nature of relationship challenges. Couples must jump in sync to avoid falling and dropping their heart.
“The Passion Pit”:
The final stretch features a pool filled with red and orange balls where couples must find hidden “spark” tokens representing shared values like trust, honesty, and love. They must collect three tokens before racing to the finish line.
The challenge ends in the “Eternal Flame Arena,” where each couple plants their flaming heart on a pedestal to symbolize their commitment to teamwork. The couple with the fastest overall time wins the challenge.
The prize for the winning couple is a luxurious date night under the stars, complete with a private firepit, cozy blankets, and a customized Love Island cocktail menu. Beyond the tangible rewards, the “Flaming Hearts Obstacle Race” strengthens connections between couples, showcasing their ability to navigate challenges together while providing plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments for viewers.
This challenge serves as a perfect metaphor for the highs and lows of relationships, emphasizing that keeping the flame alive requires effort, communication, and a whole lot of fun. It’s a reminder to Islanders and viewers alike that the journey of love is an adventure worth taking.
Dr. Shuqiao Yao Memorial Scholarship
My background has been deeply intertwined with mental health challenges, both personally and within my family. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the complexities of mental health through my father’s struggle with depression, rooted in childhood abuse, his service in the Air Force, and the emotional toll of battling cancer, which left him unable to speak in a way others can understand. These experiences taught me how mental health issues can profoundly shape not just an individual’s life, but also the dynamics of their entire family.
My own journey with mental health began when I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder during a particularly challenging period in my life. The experience of managing depression, with its intense fatigue, emotional strain, and impact on my relationships, was isolating and overwhelming at first. However, it became a turning point that ignited my passion for understanding and addressing mental health issues. The support I received from therapy and the tools I learned to manage my condition inspired me to provide similar care to others who feel lost or misunderstood in their struggles.
In addition to these personal experiences, my upbringing has further influenced my desire to pursue psychology. Growing up in a family that faced challenges such as financial instability, cultural displacement, and strained relationships gave me a unique perspective on resilience and the need for compassion. I became a mental health advocate within my own family, encouraging open conversations about emotions and organizing “State of the Union” family meetings to strengthen our relationships. This experience showed me how addressing mental health can foster healing and connection, and it solidified my commitment to helping others navigate similar challenges.
Academically, I have found that psychology bridges my passion for understanding human behavior with my desire to make a meaningful impact. I am particularly drawn to the intricacies of interpersonal relationships and the ways early experiences shape mental health. I am pursuing this field because I want to empower individuals to rewrite their narratives, heal from trauma, and develop healthier relationships with themselves and others.
My ultimate goal is to earn a doctorate in psychology so I can conduct research and contribute to the advancement of mental health care. I am particularly interested in exploring innovative therapies and interventions that integrate emotional, relational, and physical well-being. By combining my personal experiences with professional expertise, I hope to create new tools and insights that make mental health care more effective and accessible for diverse populations.
My background has not only shaped my passion for psychology but also given me the resilience and empathy to connect with others in meaningful ways. It has taught me that mental health is not just about treating conditions- it’s about helping people find hope, build resilience, and create lives that reflect their true potential. I look forward to bringing this perspective into my future work, supporting others in their healing journeys while continuing to grow and contribute to the field of psychology through both practice and research.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
I’m a huge fan of Wicked- so much so that I’ve seen the broadway musical three times, and I was so excited for the movie adaptation. What I love most about Wicked is its powerful message: no one is entirely “good” or “wicked.” The musical challenges simplistic labels and highlights the complexity of human nature, which resonates deeply with me.
As someone who studies psychology, I find the psychological depth of the characters in Wicked particularly fascinating. Each character embodies the complexities and contradictions that make humans so uniquely interesting. Elphaba, often judged and misunderstood, longs for love and acceptance, revealing the universal need for connection and belonging. Despite being labeled as “wicked,” her actions are often driven by noble intentions and a strong moral compass, which forces the audience to reconsider their biases and assumptions about others- especially biased based on peoples skin color.
Glinda, on the other hand, is a shining example of how insecurities can shape behavior. She presents herself as bubbly and perfect, but beneath that facade lies a deep desire to be accepted and admired. Her psychological journey highlights the struggle many people face in balancing external appearances with internal struggles. Fiyero’s story is another compelling example of psychological complexity. He begins the story pretending to be shallow and carefree, likely as a defense mechanism to shield himself from past hurt. As he grows closer to Elphaba, he learns to embrace vulnerability and authenticity, illustrating the profound impact of love and self-discovery on personal growth.
What makes Wicked even more impactful is its music and songs, which are masterfully composed and designed to immerse the listener in the characters' emotional journeys. Stephen Schwartz’s score is a work of art, using melody, harmony, and lyrics to amplify the intensity of the story’s most pivotal moments. For instance, “Defying Gravity” is not just a soaring anthem; it’s a moment of liberation and self-empowerment for Elphaba, where the audience can feel her strength and resolve as she embraces her true self. The climactic build and triumphant orchestration make it impossible not to feel inspired alongside her.
Similarly, “I’m Not That Girl” conveys Elphaba’s vulnerability and longing with heartbreaking simplicity. The delicate melody and touching lyrics pull listeners into her unspoken emotions, making us empathize with her unfulfilled desires and insecurities. On the other hand, “Popular” is bubbly and comedic, reflecting Glinda’s outer persona while also hinting at her inner need to be liked and accepted. These musical moments go beyond storytelling- they invite the audience to experience the emotions of the characters on a visceral level.
As someone passionate about psychology, I find that Wicked offers profound insights into human behavior and motivation. It shows how past experiences, relationships, and societal expectations shape each character’s actions and decisions. It’s a reminder that humans are beautifully complicated, and understanding one another requires empathy and a willingness to see beyond the surface. The musical’s exploration of identity, self-perception, and personal growth mirrors many of the themes I study, making it all the more meaningful to me.
For me, Wicked isn’t just an entertaining musical; it’s a meaningful story about empathy, perspective, and the shared humanity that connects us all. Its message, paired with its stunning music and profound character psychology, makes it a timeless masterpiece. The way it balances humor, drama, and heart is unparalleled, and it’s why I’ll always be a devoted fan.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My experience with mental health has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world, giving me a unique perspective on resilience, empathy, and the power of support. Both my father and I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and navigating these challenges has deeply influenced who I am and the path I aspire to take.
My father’s mental health struggles stem from his experiences as an immigrant from Vietnam, including living in an immigration camp as a child, enduring cultural displacement, and facing significant life adversities. Additionally, his depression is rooted in the physical and emotional abuse he endured from his own father. Furthermore, his service in the Air Force brought its own set of emotional and psychological challenges. These difficulties were compounded by his battle with cancer, which left him unable to speak in a way others can understand. Witnessing his journey has been a cornerstone of my understanding of mental health, particularly in how cultural, environmental, and physical factors intertwine. These experiences taught me the importance of compassion and highlighted the barriers many individuals face when addressing their mental health, especially within immigrant families where stigma often prevails.
Growing up in this environment, I became a mental health advocate within my family, organizing “State of the Union” meetings to discuss our emotions and family dynamics openly. I encouraged counseling for my family members, helping to break the stigma and create a culture of emotional support. These efforts taught me the value of communication and the role of vulnerability in building healthier relationships. I saw firsthand how understanding and acknowledging emotions could transform strained family dynamics, creating space for healing and growth.
On a personal level, managing my own depression has instilled a sense of resilience and self-awareness that drives my goals. My diagnosis was initially isolating and terrifying, as it forced me to confront feelings and struggles that I had long tried to suppress or manage on my own. It felt overwhelming to put a name to the emotions that had weighed so heavily on me, and I feared how others might perceive me if they knew about my condition. The stigma surrounding mental health made it difficult to open up, leaving me feeling alone and unsure of how to move forward. It was as though the diagnosis placed a spotlight on my vulnerability, exposing a part of me that I wasn’t ready to fully understand or share. The uncertainty about whether I could regain a sense of normalcy or control over my life was daunting, and I wrestled with feelings of shame and inadequacy during those early stages. However, it became a catalyst for growth as I sought to better understand my needs and how to care for my mental health. This journey has inspired my career goal of becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). I aim to support individuals and families in navigating their own struggles, helping them find hope and build resilience through empathetic and evidence-based care.
My academic background in Nutritional Sciences has further shaped my understanding of the mind-body connection. Learning how nutrition and lifestyle can impact mental health reinforced my belief in a holistic approach to well-being. I plan to incorporate this perspective into my future counseling practice, addressing not only emotional challenges but also physical and environmental factors that influence mental health. This integrative approach aligns with my belief that sustainable healing requires treating the whole person.
My experiences have also deepened my understanding of the world, particularly the challenges faced by underserved and marginalized communities. I have seen how cultural stigmas, financial barriers, and a lack of resources can prevent individuals from seeking help, and I am committed to making mental health care accessible and culturally sensitive. I believe that fostering inclusivity and understanding in mental health services is vital to ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to heal and thrive.
My relationships have also been transformed by my experiences with mental health. I have learned to approach others with empathy, patience, and an openness to understanding their unique struggles. These qualities have allowed me to form deeper and more meaningful connections, both personally and professionally. I strive to be a source of support for others, offering encouragement and understanding even in the most difficult times.
In conclusion, my journey with mental health has shaped me into a person who values empathy, resilience, and holistic well-being. It has inspired my career goals, strengthened my relationships, and given me a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the human experience. Through my future work as an LMFT, I hope to create a positive impact by empowering others to overcome their challenges and build fulfilling lives, just as I have sought to do for myself and my family.
Ella's Gift
For the past 7 years, my experiences with mental health have shaped me in profound ways, deepening my understanding of resilience, growth, and the importance of support systems. When I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, I faced overwhelming challenges: persistent fatigue, emotional strain, loss of interest in daily activities, relational challenges, and sleepless nights. This period has been one of the most difficult in my life, yet it has become a driver for personal growth and a driving force behind my passion for mental health advocacy and education.
Navigating depression has been a multifaceted challenge. Daily activities like cooking, cleaning, or even getting ready for the day have often felt insurmountable during my darkest moments. Depression has also impacted my relationships, creating misunderstandings and emotional distance at times, and has caused me to miss out on valuable moments with friends. These missed opportunities have been a painful reminder of how isolating mental health struggles can be. In high school, I experienced suicidal ideations, a terrifying and lonely reality that emphasized the critical need for mental health support. While these experiences were incredibly difficult, they have also fueled my determination to provide a safe and understanding space for others who feel as though they are struggling alone.
Through this journey, I have grown in ways I never thought possible. My experiences with depression have taught me the value of persistence and the power of seeking help. By reaching out to a therapist, working closely with a psychiatrist, and confiding in close friends and family, I’ve learned that recovery is not linear but is always worth pursuing. Though my healing journey has often been challenging, T\these steps have illuminated the importance of accessible, compassionate mental health care for all and inspired me to pursue a career in counseling where I can make a meaningful impact.
Academically, my struggles have reinforced my commitment to learning and my passion for growth. My educational goals are deeply intertwined with my personal experiences. I am currently pursuing a Master of Professional Counseling degree, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Long-term, I aspire to earn a doctorate in counseling or psychology, enabling me to conduct research on innovative therapies and techniques that address mental health challenges, particularly in family and relational dynamics.
A critical part of my recovery plan involves continuing to prioritize my mental health while balancing my personal, academic, and professional goals. This plan includes regular monitoring of my medications with my psychiatrist to ensure my treatment remains effective and adjusted to my needs. I will also continue my therapy sessions, which provide a safe space for reflection, growth, and problem-solving.
Community also remains a cornerstone of my recovery. I am committed to maintaining close relationships with friends and family, who offer invaluable support and encouragement. Additionally, I plan to stay engaged in hobbies and passions that bring me joy, such as cooking, reading, and exploring nutrition’s impact on mental health. These activities help me cultivate a sense of purpose and balance in my life.
Continuing my education in mental health is another integral part of my journey. I am dedicated to learning more about how nutrition affects depression and how lifestyle interventions can complement traditional therapeutic methods. By staying informed about advancements in the mental health field, I aim to become a more effective counselor and advocate for holistic approaches to care.
My experiences with mental health have not only shaped my aspirations but also reinforced my belief in the importance of hope and perseverance. Recovery is an ongoing journey, one that requires active participation, resilience, and a commitment to growth. Through this process, I have come to see my challenges as an opportunity to better understand myself and to prepare to help others navigate their own paths toward healing.
By pursuing advanced education and integrating my personal experiences with professional knowledge, I am committed to becoming a compassionate and effective mental health professional. My plan for recovery is not just about managing my own well-being; it’s also about equipping myself to inspire and empower others. I look forward to contributing to the mental health field and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those I serve.

From a young age, I have been deeply aware of the complexities and challenges of family dynamics. My parents’ marital difficulties, marked by emotional strain and significant disruptions, profoundly affected our family. These challenges revealed to me the fragility of relationships and the profound impact unresolved issues can have on mental health and overall well-being. It was through witnessing these struggles that I developed a passion for marriage and family therapy. I firmly believe that healthy relationships are the foundation of thriving individuals and communities, and I am committed to helping others strengthen these bonds.
The need for skilled mental health counselors, especially in marriage and family therapy, has never been greater. Today’s fast-paced and often isolating world presents unique challenges to couples and families, leading to rising rates of divorce, mental health issues, and relational breakdowns. I aim to be part of the solution by providing compassionate, evidence-based counseling to individuals and families navigating life’s challenges. My belief in the transformative power of therapy is grounded in both personal experience and a desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
My own experience with major depressive disorder, has further fueled my passion for this field. Managing the symptoms of depression has given me a deeper understanding of the importance of accessible mental health care and the impact it can have on an individual’s ability to thrive. This personal journey has strengthened my empathy for others and my determination to contribute meaningfully to the field of mental health. I am particularly passionate about working with teenage girls who are struggling with self-esteem, identity, and mental health challenges. I come from a family that has faced significant challenges with mental health. Both my father and I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and navigating this reality has deeply impacted my personal growth and shaped my perspective on life. My father’s struggles with depression stem from a combination of traumatic experiences, including his time in an immigration camp after fleeing Vietnam as a young boy and the challenges of building a new life in the United States. Later in life, his battle with cancer, which left him unable to speak in a way other can understand, further compounded his mental health struggles. Witnessing his journey and experiencing my own challenges with depression has given me a profound understanding of the complexities of mental illness.
My own battle with mental health began in high school, long before I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder. I struggled silently, feeling overwhelmed by a persistent sadness and a sense of hopelessness that I didn’t fully understand. Balancing school, social expectations, and personal insecurities felt impossible, and the weight of it all pushed me to a dark place where I even considered taking my own life. These were some of the hardest moments of my life, and at the time, I felt isolated and unsure of where to turn for help.
Everything began to change when I was finally diagnosed and started counseling and medication. Seeking professional help was a turning point that gave me the tools and support I needed to begin healing. Counseling provided me with a safe space to process my feelings, while medication helped to stabilize the overwhelming emotions I had been carrying for so long. Slowly, I began to rebuild my confidence and discover healthier ways to cope with life’s challenges. This experience not only saved my life but also inspired my passion for mental health advocacy and my desire to help others who may feel as lost as I once did.
In addition to depression, I also manage the physical and emotional impacts of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects my hormonal balance and often exacerbates my depression. Living with PCOS adds layers of fatigue and physical discomfort, making everyday tasks feel overwhelming at times. These experiences have taught me resilience and the importance of prioritizing mental health in all aspects of life.
Mental illness has also influenced the dynamics within my family. My father’s depression, coupled with the financial instability we faced, created significant emotional challenges for all of us. However, rather than allowing these difficulties to divide us, I took the initiative to foster open communication by organizing family meetings and encouraging counseling. These efforts helped us develop healthier relationships and taught me the value of addressing mental health within the family unit.
Today, I am proud of the progress I have made and the strength I have developed through these experiences. They have shaped my empathy and deepened my commitment to supporting others in their mental health journeys. Through my story, I hope to inspire others to seek help, hold onto hope, and find the courage to overcome their challenges.

My personal experience with mental health has profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Both my father and I have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and our journeys have given me a deep understanding of the complexities of mental health and the transformative power of compassionate care. My father’s struggles began long before I was born, rooted in the profound challenges he faced immigrating to the United States from Vietnam. As a young boy, he endured the hardships of living in an immigration camp, a time marked by uncertainty, trauma, and the loss of familiar cultural ties. These experiences left lasting emotional scars that later contributed to his depression. Despite these adversities, he worked tirelessly to build a life for our family, but his struggles resurfaced when he faced significant challenges in adulthood, including a battle with cancer that left him unable to speak in a way that others can understand.
Growing up in this environment, I witnessed firsthand how untreated mental health issues can affect individuals and families. My father’s depression, compounded by financial instability and other stressors, deeply impacted our family dynamic. These experiences, coupled with my own diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder, have shaped my understanding of the importance of emotional support, open communication, and seeking professional help. To address our family’s struggles, I became a mental health advocate within our home. I continually encourage my family members to attend counseling, which helped us rebuild healthier relationships despite the difficulties we faced.
My educational background in nutrition has also influenced my belief in holistic counseling. Studying Nutritional Sciences at Oklahoma State University has given me a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of physical and mental health. I have learned how factors like diet and lifestyle can significantly affect mental well-being. This knowledge has inspired my approach to therapy, emphasizing a holistic perspective that integrates physical and emotional aspects of health. I believe that by addressing the whole person, counselors can help clients achieve more sustainable and meaningful healing.
These experiences have not only shaped my beliefs but have also influenced my relationships and career aspirations. Advocating for mental health within my family has taught me to approach others with empathy, patience, and understanding. I have come to value the importance of building trust and creating safe spaces where individuals feel comfortable sharing their struggles. This passion for connection and support has inspired me to pursue a career as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). My goal is to help individuals and families navigate their challenges and build stronger, healthier relationships.
Through my mental health career, I aim to make a positive impact by offering a safe space for others to heal and grow, particularly for those from diverse or underserved communities. As someone who has seen the cultural stigma surrounding mental health in immigrant families, I am passionate about providing culturally sensitive care that respects and incorporates clients’ backgrounds and values. I want to empower clients to embrace hope and build resilience while addressing their mental health in ways that align with their unique needs.
By combining my personal experiences with professional expertise, I hope to create a meaningful and lasting impact. I want to integrate my knowledge of nutrition and mental health into my counseling practice to offer a holistic approach that promotes healing on all levels. My journey has taught me that with the right support, individuals can overcome even the most daunting challenges, and I am committed to being a source of that support for others as they navigate their own paths toward wellness and fulfillment.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Being diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) has profoundly impacted my academic performance, extracurricular activities, and personal life, presenting challenges that have tested my resilience and required intentional strategies to overcome. PCOS has introduced chronic fatigue, hormonal imbalances, and physical difficulties that exacerbate my depression, making it harder to maintain the energy and focus required to excel. Despite these obstacles, I have persevered, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while taking rigorous courses in Nutritional Sciences and actively contributing to my campus community.
I prioritize my mental health through intentional practices that help me manage stress, improve my emotional well-being, and maintain balance. Weekly counseling provides a safe space to process emotions, unpack challenges, and develop strategies to navigate life’s complexities. Through professional guidance, I’ve learned to identify triggers, reframe negative thought patterns, and cultivate self-compassion during difficult times.
Physical activity is another cornerstone of my mental health routine. Regular exercise helps me manage PCOS-related fatigue and hormonal imbalances while boosting my mood and reducing symptoms of depression. Yoga, in particular, has been transformative by combining movement, mindfulness, and intentional breathing to help me manage anxiety, reduce tension, and stay present. These practices not only enhance my mental health but also give me a sense of accomplishment that carries over into other areas of my life. Journaling also plays a significant role in my mental health journey, allowing me to reflect on thoughts, track patterns, and process challenges constructively.
To maintain balance, I structure my daily life to prioritize self-care alongside my responsibilities. I dedicate time each day to activities that bring me joy, such as reading, cooking, or studying the Bible. These moments of intentional rest recharge me and help me maintain a positive outlook. Seeking support from friends, family, and mentors has also been critical, reminding me that I don’t have to navigate challenges alone and that seeking help is a sign of strength.
Despite these efforts, balancing mental health with academic and extracurricular commitments has been difficult. Depression often drains my motivation, leaving me overwhelmed and questioning my ability to manage it all. As the president of OSU Worthy, a campus organization dedicated to empowering women, I’ve taken on the responsibility of leading initiatives that uplift others while facing my own struggles. There were moments when I struggled to sustain the energy required for leadership or to maintain meaningful friendships, but I remained committed to fostering a supportive environment for others. This role has deepened my appreciation for mental health advocacy and strengthened my belief in addressing mental well-being proactively.
On top of academic and leadership commitments, I’ve worked part-time jobs to support myself financially. Managing my workload while maintaining academic excellence and meeting financial obligations has been stressful, and the thought of financing graduate school independently adds to the pressure. However, I remain motivated by my long-term goal of becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). The sacrifices I make now are an investment in a fulfilling and impactful career where I can empower others to overcome their challenges and thrive.
By combining counseling, exercise, yoga, journaling, and support from my community, I have built resilience and prioritized my mental health despite the challenges I face. These practices have enabled me to persevere, achieve academic success, lead effectively, and remain committed to my goals. My journey has shaped me into someone who values perseverance, empathy, and holistic well-being- qualities I will carry forward into graduate school and my future career as a mental health advocate and professional.

I have been helping others with their mental health by advocating for open communication, emotional support, and professional counseling within my family and community. Growing up in a family deeply affected by mental health challenges, including my father and I both being diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, I became a mental health advocate in our home. My father, an immigrant from Vietnam, developed depression due to the trauma of living in an immigration camp and later faced additional struggles, including a battle with cancer that left him unable to speak. These experiences taught me the importance of addressing mental health proactively.
To support my family, I organized “State of the Union” meetings, where we openly discussed our emotions, challenges, and family dynamics. These meetings fostered a sense of understanding and encouraged my family to seek counseling, helping us strengthen our relationships and build resilience. I also encourage friends and peers to prioritize their mental health, whether by offering a listening ear, sharing resources, or normalizing conversations about emotional well-being.
My educational background in Nutritional Sciences has reinforced my belief in the connection between physical and mental health, inspiring my approach to holistic care. This perspective motivates me to consider all aspects of a person’s well-being when offering support.
As I pursue my Master’s in Professional Counseling and my goal of becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), I plan to use my education and experiences to emotionally support others. Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is deeply important to me as a student because it serves as the cornerstone for academic success, personal relationships, and overall well-being. My journey with mental health has been shaped by both personal struggles and my family’s challenges, which have highlighted the critical need for emotional resilience and support. Being diagnosed with major depressive disorder has been a defining experience for me. It has required me to seek help, build coping strategies, and learn the value of fostering healthy mental health practices. These lessons have also inspired me to become a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) so I can help others navigate their own emotional challenges.
My family’s experiences have profoundly influenced my perspective on mental health. We have faced difficult trials, including my father’s affair, which caused a rift in our relationships, and financial instability that added stress and uncertainty to our lives. Compounding these difficulties, my father lost his speech as a result of radiation treatment for cancer, a struggle that has deeply affected our family dynamic. These challenges have made it evident that our family, as a whole, struggles emotionally. However, they have also motivated me to become an advocate for mental health within my home.
To address these struggles, I have worked to foster open communication and prioritize emotional well-being in our family. One way I do this is by encouraging my family members to attend counseling, where they can receive professional support and learn tools to manage their emotions. Additionally, I organize regular family meetings, which I call "State of the Union addresses." During these gatherings, we discuss our mental health, share our feelings about the family dynamic, and work toward understanding and healing. These meetings have become a safe space for us to connect and support one another in a meaningful way.
In my broader community, I advocate for mental health by pursuing my education to become an LMFT. I see this career path as an opportunity to address the emotional challenges faced by individuals and families, helping them find hope and strength in difficult times. My personal experiences have given me insight into the complexities of family dynamics, and I hope to use this understanding to guide others through their own struggles. By dedicating my life to this field, I aim to contribute to a society where mental health is prioritized, resources are accessible, and emotional well-being is no longer stigmatized.
As a student, I recognize how important it is to balance academic demands with mental health. Managing my studies while navigating personal and family challenges has taught me the value of resilience, self-care, and asking for help when needed. These practices not only allow me to thrive as a student but also prepare me for my future role as a counselor.
Mental health is not just a personal priority for me- it is a passion and a calling. Whether through encouraging my family to seek counseling, organizing family meetings, or pursuing a career as an LMFT, I am committed to advocating for mental health at home and in my community. My hope is that by sharing my story and helping others, I can inspire a culture of openness and support that leads to healing and growth for all.
