As the daughter of a veteran, I have experienced firsthand what it means to dedicate yourself to serving and advocating for others. My fathers service in the United States Air Force did not just change and shape his life and career, but it also shaped mine. My biggest and most life changing experience as a child of a veteran was when my family was living on Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Living on an Air Force base in another country taught me a sense of community that you cannot experience anywhere else. When you live thousands of miles from home, your neighbors and community become your family. Living in Okinawa from 2019-2022, military personnel and their families were not able to visit the United States due to COVID-19. During a very isolating time, I was able to experience service and community that you cannot experience any other way. Living in Okinawa also taught me that community is built through everyday acts of service. Whether it was families checking on one another during typhoons or tsunamis, neighbors helping each other while loved ones were deployed or working long hours, or friends celebrating holidays together when traveling home was not possible, I saw firsthand how military families supported one another. Witnessing that kind of compassion reinforced my belief that the strongest communities are built by people who are willing to put others before themselves. Military culture is not just living in houses that all look the same. It is going to eat Christmas tacos at your neighbors house because you can't fly home for the holidays. My father's military career and many others just like him showed me what quiet, dedicated, and selfless service looked like. This experience helped inspire me to pursue a nursing career. As I continue my education, I hope to reflect the service that my father gave by serving others selflessly. I want to provide the same sense of compassion and community that the military gave my family during a time of fear and uncertainty. My experience living overseas and being immersed in another culture taught me to appreciate different perspectives and to treat people from all walks of life with dignity and respect. As a nurse, I hope every patient who enters my care feels valued, heard, and supported. Carrying forward a life of service is the greatest way I know to honor my father's example, and I hope to make my community stronger one patient and one act of compassion at a time.
