My mother loves to tell the story of how, even as a babbling toddler, I dreamed of becoming a teacher. My earliest memories are filled with afternoons spent eagerly rushing home after pre-K, arranging my stuffed animals into neat little rows, and recreating the school day with me as the teacher. As I grew older, my focus shifted towards special education, sparked by a profound personal experience. When my brother was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, I was a pre-teen. Every day after school, I would sit in the passenger seat as we picked him up from therapy, listening intently as his therapists generously stayed an extra 15 minutes just to discuss his progress. Through these moments, I began to understand the unique challenges my brother faced—challenges I had never had to consider before. Witnessing my mother’s unwavering dedication to creating opportunities for him and the therapists' genuine investment in his well-being ignited a passion within me. I became determined to make a positive impact on others in a similar way. I believe Professor Harold Bloom’s quote underscores the importance of education beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge and skills. It emphasizes the need to inspire students to develop their own understanding of the world and their place within it. By fostering this journey of self-discovery, we help students learn about themselves and others, ultimately guiding them toward a richer and more meaningful experience. A great educator transcends teaching the curriculum by assisting students in finding their passion and purpose. This, in turn, enables them to reflect on how they can use their passions to make the world a better place. As a future teacher, I aspire to create opportunities for students to engage with and contribute to their communities. I draw inspiration from a program at my local high school, developed by a special education teacher I deeply admire. In this program, students run their own business, delivering personalized goods. They handle everything: creating advertisements, taking orders, gathering materials, crafting and delivering products, and managing funds. Popular items include door hangers, pet treats, and personalized shirts and cups. Each student works on projects that align with their interests and talents. The highlight of the week was always Friday mornings when students would visit each class with a rolling cart full of their products and snacks. We eagerly awaited their arrival, cash in hand, ready to support their efforts and preview their offerings. From a young age, I have been driven by a passion for teaching, inspired by my personal experiences and my brother's journey with autism. These experiences have shaped my commitment to special education and my desire to make a positive impact on students' lives. Drawing inspiration from a high school program where students run their own businesses, I aspire to create similar opportunities for my future students. My goal is to help students engage with their communities, discover their passions, and realize their potential. By fostering a sense of self-awareness and community involvement, I aim to guide my students towards fulfillment and happiness!
