Bio

I want to pursue a career in Marine and Coastal Environmental Science, so I can focus on the chemicals and policies that affect our wildlife as well as our drinking water and agriculture. Growing up in West Virginia, I was subjected to the 2014 water crisis firsthand and witnessed the panic and pain that spread across my community. They were anxious, knowing that they would have to find other means of obtaining drinking water. I want to be the change that studies these crises and helps implement the necessary regulations to help prevent these, as well as any other corporate-related accidents. I am putting myself through school to achieve this. I am currently working 3 jobs and am a resident advisor to make this dream come true, but I would greatly benefit from this award, so I don't have to force my grades to take a back seat.

My dual-enrollment classes taught me to act early while maintaining humility. Whenever someone struggled during dual enrollment, I would help them study and understand the material, whether it was criminal justice, sociology, psychology, etc. I also took AP 2D, where I took time to admire everyone's artistic ability and hear their why behind their piece. I achieved a 4 on that test and had a 3.8 GPA from my 18 credits that I took during high school. I took time after school to help tutor my peers as well as to volunteer in as many events as I could. I was a member of Beta Club, Biology Club, and participated in the track and field team as a thrower. I was the 4th best thrower in the region and almost qualified for the 2025 WVSSAC State Tournament. Whenever there was someone in their head or worried they were not hitting the mark, I would step in and be their cheerleader and pick them up. Beta Club only required us to volunteer for one event; however, I would go above and beyond to volunteer and help my community as much as I can. I volunteered to help coach my middle school's girls' basketball team as a way to help connect with the girls as well as serve as someone a little closer in age that they could come to. Since then, I have made the Dean's List every semester as well as maintained a 3.772. I recently had to leave my abusive household, which has put me in the position of having to pay for school and all of my expenses myself. I am majoring in Marine and Coastal Environmental Science and plan to pick a minor in Coastal Resilience to focus on how environmental policy impacts our community and wildlife. I am currently working three jobs as well as serving as a resident advisor for university housing. Between my four jobs, I continue to work in my community through volunteer programs like LoveBlue, Kiwanis, and Sea Turtle Club. LoveBlue is our beach cleaning club where we clean up our beaches to give back to the community as well as our environment. We spend 2 hours walking the beach picking up plastic, cigarette butts, cans, and any trash we find. The trash is then seperated between recycycle and trash. Kiwanis is a club that is through the YMCA, but our chapter at CCU was started by my friends and me. We plan to hold events such as planting native plants with elementary schoolers, cleaning up the beaches, and educating on sea turtle safety, as well as some other events to connect with our community. Sea Turtle Club focuses on our loggerhead and leatherback sea turtle populations and works directly with the SCDNR to track sea turtle populations and how many sea turtles nest on our beaches here in South Carolina. We are currently participating in a study through the University of Georgia to track the population of male sea turtles relative to climate change and collect data for every inventory that we do. I had to step back from these clubs and pay less attention to my classes this past semester to focus on my financial hardship, especially given that I am homeless and CCU is my home. If I can no longer RA or stay afloat without loans, I will not finish my degree, and I will be forced to drop out.
